Welcome to the December issue of the
Branton & AuckLey Arrow I am sure you will agree, our villages have looked beautiful over the last month with all of the incredible remembrance displays. The effort made by so many people is testament to the thriving and caring community we live in and demonstrates our respect and love for the memory of those who have fallen in conflict whilst serving their country. Thank you to everyone involved. This months Arrow is bursting at the seams with news of local Christmas activities from fayres, markets and carol singing to Christmas shopping ideas and days out to entertain the family. We are so lucky to have all of these events, many of which are organised by volunteers, so please give your support if you can and watch out for those mince pies (I started the end of October). I would like to thank all of the advertisers who continue to contribute to the Arrow, local residents, groups, organisations and schools who provide information each month for me to share with you all and the fantastic delivery team who deliver your magazine every month whatever the weather. The Arrow has just celebrated its 18th year in October and I am forever grateful for your support.
The January issue deadline for adverts and content is Friday 8th December. The Arrow will be delivered by 1st January 2024.
Merry Christmas Michelle Sidebottom

Remembrance pillar box topper stolen Local Branton resident Louise Taylor spent many hours creating this beautiful pillar box topper in memory of those that have fallen in conflict. Louise kindly donated it to the parish of Cantley with Branton, to compliment the stunning poppy remembrance displays. Unfortunately the topper was stolen on the weekend of the 11th/12th November. If anyone has any information as to the whereabouts of this topper, can you please contact The Arrow. Thank you.

NEWS FROM BRANTON ST WILFRID’S C OF E PRIMARY SCHOOL
Year 6 led a beautiful and poignant assembly for Remembrance Day. In preparation, children studied WW1 poetry and produced stunning watercolour poppy artwork which they presented alongside a reading of 'In Flanders Fields' by John Mccrae. The assembly taught our school community about the meaning of Remembrance Day, plus the reasons we remember the soldiers who have died during wars. We explained why we wear a poppy and where the money we raise from poppy sales goes. The pupils then sang 'Light a Candle for Peace' and 'I Wish for Peace'. We observed a minute's silence as a school and then representatives from our school Pupil Parliament laid their class wreath by the cross. We prayed for people around the world who are affected by war, both past and present, and ended with the message that as future citizens of the world, we hold peace in our hands and in our hearts

Huge congratulations to every person who has been involved in the beautiful Remembrance Day displays around our villages. The WI, Parish Councils, local residents, coffee clubs and schools have all lent a hand in producing heart warming tributes to our service men, women and animals lost in past and present conflicts. Here are just a few photos that have been sent to me by local photographer, Malcolm Johnston, local residents and the WI. I hope you enjoy them all.

Remembrance Service
Blaxton War Memorial, 12 November 2023 A service of remembrance took place at Blaxton War Memorial officiated by associate minister, Carol Lee, and lay minister, Margaret Liddle, on Sunday, 12 November to honour those, who during World War One and Two as well as those in subsequent conflicts, lost their lives fighting for freedom. The service was attended by villagers, parish councillors, community groups, local residents, girl guides, brownies and rainbows as well as members of 558 squadron. At 11.00 am two minutes silence was observed during which the Last Post was sounded followed by Reveille. The bugle was played by Lewis Adams. The first names of the fallen during World War I were known only by their initial and surname but thanks to a local resident keenly interested in the history of Blaxton and who has researched military records, the first names will be called out at future remembrance services. Of particular note is the name of Leonard Brown, who died in action on 30 December 1917. Sadly, like so many in this conflict, he has no known grave but his name is listed on the Thiepval Memorial commemorating the servicemen who died in the battles for the Somme. His name can also be found on the headstone of his parent’s grave, William and Sarah, in Finningley churchyard, and who were residents of Blaxton, The Finningley WI and the Blaxton Village Hall Knit and Natter Group knitted and crotched lots of poppies to include on wreaths, adorning lamp posts and seats, and a poster with the words “lest we forget”, which were all placed around the area of the Bluebell roundabout in Blaxton. Many thanks to all who crafted the poppies and made up the wreaths without whose help this would not have been possible. Jane Raybould Vice-President, Finningley WI

Thorne Rural Lions
2023 Christmas Activities Thorne Lions have ha d a busy fruitful year taking part, and organising various activities. The Summer Walk took place again starting on Town Moor on May 14th. All proceeds were for “Parkinson’s Doncaster Support Group. A cheque for £3,387.98 was presented to them. A Lion’s Fun and Sports Day was organised with other Lions groups on Saturday 12th August. This is for all people with a disability and is extremely popular. The participants are so enthusiastic and take part in all the activities. They were so pleased when it was resurrected after Covid. The venue was changed and this year Parkland Sports and Social Club on Wheatley Hall Road was used. One of our staple fundraisers has been coffee mornings. These take place either in Hatfield Library or in The Barn, behind the Bay Horse, every few months. Now it is one of the busiest parts of the year for us. The sleigh has to be checked over to make sure it is road worthy, as it will be used most days in the month of December. The areas and dates of the visits are listed below. We were certainly very popular when the sleigh was back on the road. It will be manned by Lions members giving their support to Father Christmas. We will be carrying a card reader for your convenience, you just have to ask. Further details of timings can be found on the Thorne Rural Lions face book page.
