Wow where did January go! I hope 2023 has started well for you and you are still clinging to those new year resolutions.
s nice to have something to look forward to whether it s a holiday or special celebration, I have just booked tickets to see Olly Murs at YWP this summer, they also have a Whitney tribute, I have a feeling these events will sell out quickly.
You will also find the Auckley Show 2023 schedule of events in this month s Arrow so take a look, get involved and start planning your show piece for the best show around.
Love is in the air this month so you best get your tables booked for that romantic Valentines evening. Wilds Café Bistro at the HIVE have a special Valentine menu, so no excuse, its also over a few days so plenty of options if 14th is not convenient.
The Local in Branton has started to offer Brunch on a Sunday morning from 10am until sold out. All locally sourced food and the most amazing Armstrong Butchers Ltd Sausages and bread from the Welbeck bakehouse, no better way to start your Sunday.
Branton litter pick has been booked for Saturday 25th February, this event is normally really well attended and the litter pick is finished before 12, if you have some time to spare, it would be great to see you. Meet at Kilham Hall at 9,30am.
The March issue deadline is Wednesday 15th February The Arrow will be delivered before 1st March.

Branton coffee club Christmas lunch was a huge success and enjoyed by all. The pie, peas and gravy followed with plum loaf and cheese was lovely and we were entertained by a singer.
We have had a good year and enjoyed 2 traips as well as a successful Macmillan coffee morning and we donate d £260 to the charity and £100 to feed the homeless. Thanks to our wonderful members for your friendship and support.
If you would like to join us, we meet at Kilham Hall, Branton on Tuesdays at 10am to 11.30.
(next door to the chip shop) a Warm Welcome in a Warm Space tea / coffee
Tuesdays 10am & 12pm Doncaster Warm Community Spaces
Our monthly meetings take place on the second Thursday of the month, with the next one on Thursday 9th February 2023 at 7 pm in Kilham Hall, Branton, DN3 3PF. Why not come along and meet everyone? You will be made very welcome. Light refreshments are served during the evening and, of course, there is a raffle.
If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact the Secretary, Susan Webster susanjwebster@sky.com Tel: 01302 772853 or 07910746925.
We wish you all a belated Happy and Healthy New Year and hope that we all have a much more normal year than we have had over the last few years.
At our January Meeting, The Council agreed that we needed to spend £30519 in the 2023-24 Financial year. This is an increase in what we have been spending in recent years and reflects rising costs of services and salaries and the Council is also doing more than in previous years. This means that a Band D household will be paying £41.47 a year, a rise of about £5 compared to this year. This is the first rise in our precept for several years.
You will know that an additional Bank Holiday has been announced for 8th May to celebrate the Coronation of the King. The Council has agreed that we should hold an event similar to the one held last year to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee of the late Queen Elizabeth. We have established a small working group of Councillors to prepare for this and would welcome any ideas or support from other residents or groups to make this event a memorable one, hopefully this time in warm Spring sunshine. If you are able to offer help, please contact the Clerk to the Council at clerk@finningley-pc.gov.uk, who will put you on touch with the working group.
Yet again we have been thwarted in our attempts to get the necessary remedial works done to the pond. DMBC have requested that we re-tender the work necessary, in an alternative manner. They have offered to help us redraw the specification and, with the assistance of our Ward Councillors, we will work with them to achieve a successful outcome - eventually.

On Friday 24th February, we are hosting our inaugural Quiz Night at Parklands Sport and Social Club in Wheatley. There’s plenty of free parking at the venue. Doors will be open from 7pm, giving you plenty of time to grab a drink from the bar and purchase a strip of raffle tickets to be in with a chance of winning some amazing prizes. The quiz will then commence at 7:30pm. Entry is just £5 and tickets are available on our website: https:// www.rspcadoncasterrotherham.org.uk/Event/quiz. All money raised will go towards directly supporting RSPCA Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch; an autonomous and self-funded animal centre.
Another vital method of raising funds is through our charity shops. More information on these can be found here: https://www.rspcadoncasterrotherham.org.uk/Pages/Category/high-street. However, maintaining this success relies on receiving a continual cycle of good quality donations. As well as having our animal centre and the charity shops as drop-off points during opening hours, we also have a monthly drop-off point at Lakeside Outlet. Between 10am and 2pm on the last Saturday of every month, our collection van will be parked outside M&S accepting donations. We’ll also have a mini stall set up so you can pick up some of our RSPCA merchandise while you’re there! Exact dates of the Lakeside Collection can be seen here: https://www.rspcadoncasterrotherham.org.uk/news/monthlycollections
A reassuring thing to know is that every donation we receive is sorted sustainably and raises funds for us in one way or another. As an autonomous branch, we are responsible for raising all the funds we need in order to fulfil our mission of rehabilitating and caring for animals until they are rehomed. All of the animals currently waiting for their forever homes can be found here: https://www.rspcadoncasterrotherham.org.uk/animals-for-adoption.
Our current longest stay resident still awaiting his forever home is Brendon. Brendon is a Lurcher just under 5 years old. When he first came into our care over 7 months ago, he was extremely emaciated and lacked energy. However, after lots of love and nutrition from us, he is now happy and full of life again. Due to his energetic nature and his extensive love of zoomies, he is looking for a home with a large garden and an active family to take him on plenty of adventures. To register your interest in adopting this beautiful boy, visit his adoption page: https://www.rspcadoncasterrotherham.org.uk/c2022058.
To keep up to date with the latest news from our animal centre, keep an eye on our website: https://www.rspcadoncasterrotherham.org.uk/.
Our dedicated choir made up of children from Year 3 -6 headed off to the arena in Sheffield on the opening night of the 2022/23 Young Voices tour. We sang our hearts out and joined Heather Small in recording a charity single version of ‘Proud’. This was very apt as it described how we felt about our children. If you’ve ever wondered what the view is like across the arena when you are part of a 5,000-person choir, then the photo should satisfy your curiosity!

And…Relax! Our Nursery class loved their Relax Kids session. Hollie taught them the 7 steps, showing them how to use their whole body, mind, and all of their senses to relax in different ways. Everyone took home a feather and a starbreathing card to practise their relaxing at home too.
Our school is proud to have submitted successful applications for various components needed for this award, which shows our commitment to providing equal opportunities for all members of our school community providing support for each child to be who they are without fear of prejudice. Our upcoming Friendship Disco will reflect inclusion for all and we are working towards our first Pride event in the summer. Year 6 produced some fabulous work on the importance of celebrating diversity. Watch this space!
Y6 had a great time at Thackeray Museum, and experienced day in the life for a child in the Leeds workhouse in 1881. They also discovered how awful some of the living conditions were during the 1800s and have decided we are very pleased we are fortunate to be living now! If you feel inspired to contact us about anything in the update, please drop us a line at admin@soa.dsat.education and we will get back to you.
The Auckley Neighbourhood Plan examina on is now concluding with an examiner’s report likely in the next couple of weeks. Once the Parish Council receive the report, then it will iden fy what changes are necessary to enable the plan to progress to a referendum. The Council will make those changes and re‐publish the final version of the neighbourhood plan.
A referendum will then be organised by the local authority which will enable all eligible electorates within the parish to vote on whether they think the neighbourhood plan should be made and used to help determine future planning applica ons within the area.
Thank you to all those residents who helped us produce the neighbourhood plan or provided comments during the consulta ons. Your contribu ons have been appreciated. Further informa on about the referendum will be provided in due course.
The Parish Precept is the money collected by DMBC on behalf of the Council and used for the benefit of the residents of Auckley. Due to the increased costs associated with maintaining and caring for the Parish’s parks which are being passed on to the Council, 2023/24 will see a 7.75% increase in the Precept, equa ng to £29.05 for a Band D property. The Precept for 2023/24 is £49,000.
The Council would like to receive interest from residents in the organisa on of a ‘Picnic in the Park’ type event to celebrate the King’s Corona on on Saturday 6th of May. The idea would be to organise a ‘Bring your Own’ type of event where residents join together on Riverside Park, bringing their own food. Please let us know your thoughts via the Clerk.
The Council have received complaints from local residents about the parking around the school. Drivers a ending at pick up and drop off are asked to act considerately by not blocking driveways and access to roads, hindering access along the pavement etc. A le er has been sent to the school to remind parents/ carers to be considerate, as well as contact made with the police and DMBC.
The next village PCSO drop‐in will take place on Wednesday 22nd of February between 5 and 6pm in the small room of the Parish Centre. Call in to discuss issues, concerns and problems with our local PCSO.
To contact the Clerk to Auckley Parish Council (Emma Lear), please email clerk@auckleyparishcouncil.gov.uk or call 07857 568268.

On a very wet morning seven Ramblers plus the leader arrived at Sandall Beat Wood Nature Reserve car park. A er leaving we took a good track leading towards the children’s playground where some offices are located. A bridge over a railway line was nego ated next. Here par cular care was required as wet leaves on wet wooden steps cause a slippage hazard. Wet leaves and sizeable puddles were everywhere but did not cause any problems.
Next came a long broad tree lined track looking very autumnal. This narrowed a er a while and in due course we arrived at Cantley. We took a break by the shops under a long canopy which at last gave some respite from the rain. A er a short break we set off again along residen al roads, before emerging on Cantley Lane. Turning le here and le at the next roundabout allowed us to proceed to Old Cantley. By now thankfully it had stopped raining.
Another footpath took us away from Old Cantley back into Sandall Beat Wood. A steady walk through the woods brought us to the loca on where we were earlier in the walk. Rather than going back by the same route, we took a path on the right to reach the landscaped area where Markham Main Colliery used to be. A er a short distance
we made a descent to where the footbridge was earlier in the walk and made our way back to the car, although the heavy rain returned for the final stretch. David Horne
