The Charity Christmas Concert organised by the Doncaster Wheatsheaf Singers and supported by The Co-op was fortunately able to go ahead on Saturday 18th December 2021 at Doncaster Minster. The concert once again featured performances by The Doncaster Wheatsheaf Singers and Hatfield & Askern Colliery Band. The performers, The Minster staff, Co-op Food, Funeralcare and our local Co-op Member Pioneers all worked together both before the event and on the night to provide a wonderful evening's entertainment and individually wrapped festive refreshments and raffle prizes were once again provided by our local Coop stores. This was yet again a fantastic turnout by the people of Doncaster to support a great cause, Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust as they celebrate their 50th Anniversary year. Proceeds from the concert raised £1500 and a cheque was presented to members of the charity in Doncaster Minster on Monday 17th January 2022. The money will be put toward a new Skin Cancer Detection machine. Dorothy Miller, Chairman of the Doncaster Wheatsheaf Singers who organised the concert wished to extend her thanks to all involved in making this event such a highlight of the Christmas celebrations in Doncaster. From left to right - Dorothy Miller (Chair DWS + Coop Member Pioneer), Jenny Liddle (DCDT), Clive Howarth (Doncaster Minster) Yvonne Woodcock (DCDT), Tracy Clark (Coop Food), Elizabeth Taylor (DCDT) and Lyn Hunter Coop National Members Councillor.

Can't praise Matt's work enough. He fitted a kitchen for us about 12 months ago and we were so impressed we invited him back to panel our staircase and landing. We were not disappointed. His attention to detail is second to none. Matt is a true perfectionist and we would highly recommend his excellent skills to anyone.

As we start a new year, Misson Primary School has so many things to look forward to, none more so than the National Lottery Community Grant project that we will be embarking on very soon. After months and months of meetings, planning and more meetings, by an amazing, committed group of people we were able to announce our exciting news to the school and local communities. The front of our school is about to undergo an unbelievable change, something bigger than we have ever seen here at Misson Primary School. It is going to be transformed into a community and school combined all weather play area, where specialist sports coaching will take place for all ages and abilities. We are not only doubling the size of our tarmacked area, but also creating a garden with relaxation mindfulness areas for all ages, where people can relax and watch their children play and maybe even have a picnic (in the warmer months). The community will be involved in designing benches, a garden arch and planters for this lovely garden We will also in the early stages of developing a small ‘forest school / outdoor classroom area to enhance our children’s outside learning. There are also plans to run community activities, including bird box building and summer holiday activities for children and family learning activities. Over the coming months, the residents of Misson, and the children of our school will gain a beautiful new outdoor area that will enable them to learn, have fun and chill out in the warm summer months to come.

Welcome to our first news of 2022. We are very happy to report that our Memory Tree during December made £3,943. It is testament to our wonderful supporters who every year visit us to make a donation in memory of loved ones and also those new to us. Hundreds also wrote messages to put on the Tree in the Centre which created a lot of interest. Our very grateful thanks to everyone who donated, whether it was pence or pounds. We would also like to sincerely thank all the management and staff at Frenchgate Shopping Centre, especially Karen and Abby, who have continued to support our charity over the years. Also our wonderful volunteers who willingly “manned” the stand on the run-up to Christmas. Amongst them was Thorne Rural Lions Group who help every year. Without all these volunteers the Memory Tree would not be possible. 2022 is a special year for our charity as we are celebrating our 50th anniversary. Since 1972 we have raised millions of pounds to buy various pieces of equipment for Doncaster Royal Infirmary and we also built and equipped St John’s Hospice in 1992. (The Hospice is now independent of DCDT and they have their own fundraising team.) All this would not have been possible without the generous help and donations from Doncaster and district residents, organisations, various groups and individuals. You are magnificent and we salute you all. If you have any fundraising ideas, especially in our 50th year, please do get in touch with us. Our contact details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), second floor (lift available), Room 209. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. Since our inception in 1972 our charity remains completely run by volunteers. All our staff, whether Trustees, administrators or secretaries, are not paid. Also, your donations are spent locally which means you can see where your money goes. These are traditions we are proud of and ones we will continue to deliver.

Over 1,000 local animals helped by RSPCA Doncaster and Rotherham A very happy and healthy new year for 2022. At the RSPCA Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch, our animal care team have worked tirelessly for over 22,000 hours spread across 365 days in 2021. This is backed up by our income generation team who work tirelessly to run events, work with our supporters and do amazingly well in our retail shops and online sales. Whether it be a bank holiday, Easter or Christmas, animal care continues every day of the year and we are so grateful to have such amazing supporters who enable us to continue our work rehabilitating and rehoming animals. In 2021, we cared for over 1,000 animals from dogs, cats and rabbits to degus, canaries and racing pigeons. We are looking forward to 2022 – another year of caring for the hundreds of animals that will enter our care through various circumstances – and we hope that you can continue to support the work we do, whether it be through social media interactions, donations, or attending our events. Unsurprisingly, it’s never long before kittens and puppies get adopted. However, some of our older residents continue to be overlooked despite having just as much love to give. Take Angel & Roxy and Lola for example. These dogs have all spent over 3 months in our care with no luck yet of finding their forever homes. After not having the best start in life, they don’t deserve to spend the rest of their lives in a kennel. They want to go out exploring before cuddling up on the sofa beside their favourite humans.

Angel and Roxy have always had one another so ideally we would like them to be rehomed together, but we would consider rehoming them separately or with another dog pending a successful introduction. Despite being older dogs, they still love their walks but would like to find a sofa that they can relax on afterwards. They are such sweethearts and are guaranteed to repay you with lots of love if you were to give them the forever home that they deserve. Lola is a lurcher who too loves going on walks and exploring new things. Although she likes to run around our centre paddock and compound, she would prefer to find a forever home of her own with a secure garden, and a family who can give her the attention she deserves. In return, she has such a loving nature which she is sure to share with you. When one of our animals become available for adoption, they are posted on our website (https:// www.rspcadoncasterrotherham.org.uk/ animals-for-adoption) and Facebook page. If you are interested in adopting an animal, please follow the process that is explained on our website. There are many ways to help RSPCA Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch with their mission to rehome and rehabilitate animals including volunteering, donating cash or goods, leaving a legacy sponsoring them through their Safe Haven programme and attending events. They have charity shops at Bawtry, Maltby, Rossington and Thorne as well as an eBay and Depop. At the Animal Centre, they rehome the animals in their care and have a pet supplies store on site and online for all your requirements. They also provide a pet cremation service and a memorial garden for your beloved pets. To donate £5, text ‘RSPCADRB’ to 70085.

Doncaster Ramblers
Cannon Hall and Silkstone Circular Our first walk of the new year was from Cannon Hall, near Barnsley. Nineteen of us gathered in bright sunshine and with a scattering of snow on the ground. Leader Norman briefed us and we set off along a lane for a short distance before walking on the more pleasurable grass. The grass was very wet, with melting snow; when there was no grass there was much mud. But, with heads up, there were undulating hills and a brilliant blue sky all around us. Across fields and along ancient footpaths we walked until reaching a delightful spot for elevenses. This was a special elevenses for it marked Norman's imminent birthday, for which he had baked a delicious fruit cake, accompanied by cheese for those who desired it. We continued our walk until we reached Silkstone, where lunch was enjoyed in the churchyard under the watchful eye of some spectacular gargoyles. After lunch we continued to the village of Cawthorne and then back past the cascades in the Cannon Hall Country Park to the car park. Thanks to Norman for planning and leading an excellent walk, and to Phil for his efficient back-marking. Every time we walk in this area we comment on its soft beauty and that we really should come here more often, especially on such beautiful days as today. DG P.O.I Cannon Hall - Although there was a house on the site when the Domesday Survey of 1086 was conducted, Cannon Hall picked up its current name from the 13th-century inhabitant Gilbert Canun. By the late 14th century Cannon Hall was in the ownership of the Bosville family of Ardsley, now a suburb in southeast of Barnsley. It was during this period that the most violent event in Cannon Hall's history took place. The Bosvilles had let the Hall out to a family (whose name has been lost), the daughter of whom was romantically involved with a man named Lockwood. Lockwood had been involved in the murder of Sir John Elland, the High Sheriff of Yorkshire. The tenant, afraid of the position in which he could find himself accommodating a fugitive, sent word to Bosville. Bosville's men arrived at Cannon Hall, where the fugitive was slain in a cruel and violent manner. Silkstone - The name Silkstone is Old English in origin and is thought to derive from the Anglo-Saxon man's name Sylc and the suffix tūn meaning a farmstead, giving "Sylc's farmstead". The Silkstone coal seam is at its shallowest in the Silkstone area, and mining was an important local industry. In 1809 the Silkstone Waggonway was built through the village by the Barnsley Canal Navigation Company. The waggonway was used to transport coal from collieries in the Silkstone valley to Cawthorne. A memorial commemorating the waggonway stands in the village. (Courtesy Wikipedia) Please visit our website https://www.doncasterramblers.org.uk/ for latest information, including future activity. Also follow us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/doncasterramblers/ for details of past Rambler outings. Remember while out observe the Countryside Code and give way to other walkers.
