Many locals turned up for ‘Carols around the tree’ in Branton to kick start the Christmas festive season. The event was organised for the second year running by Cantley with Branton Parish Council and supported by Armthorpe Elmfield Brass Band who were great.
Warm mince pies, donated by Cantley with Branton WI were distributed along with sweets for the children. Everyone had a lovely time and commented on the great community atmosphere with many finishing off in the 3 Horse Shoes Pub for a catch up with neighbours.
Thanks to 3 Horse Shoes pub for the use of their car park for the band and everyone who contributed to the event.
Kilham Hall Management Committee are looking for someone who is able to clean the hall every other week on a Sunday and Monday.
If you are interested in finding out more information, please contact Michelle Sidebottom 07795 387937 michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk

Tickhill Music Society has been presenting top quality concerts in the town for 45 years. The concerts have ranged from classical to folk to jazz, and have been available to all members of the public as well as members of the Society. However, a combination of Covid and old age has reduced the size of the audiences to the point where the Society will be forced to close if fresh support cannot be found. If this were to happen it would impoverish the quality of life in Tickhill.
The Society is therefore appealing to local people to come forward and to give their support in whatever way they can. This could range from music lovers becoming members of the Society or donations from local businesses or from patrons.

Kilham Hall in Branton was host to the Talegate Theatre Company who performed Dick Whittington on Friday 2nd and Saturday 3rd December. Kilham Hall Management Committee organised the event to thank the local community for using and supporting the hall. Cantley with Branton Parish council made a contribution towards the cost of the performances which was greatly appreciated.
The events were sold out and many children, parents, carers and grandparents enjoyed the weekend of fun and the children were each given a selection box.
The Management committee would like to thank everyone who helped out at the events and the Premier Store in Branton who managed ticket sales. Last but not least, thanks to the wonderful Talegate Theatre company who thrilled the children and created many opportunities to laugh and have fun.

The idea a year ago became a reality thanks to Mrs Stubbs (and James)!! We are so grateful for the work put it in to make our first Christmas Market happen: fair ground rides; the children's enterprise goods; local businesses; yummy food and drink and the amazing band!! The atmosphere was brilliant and I am sure everyone will agree what a great success it was. We do have a few tweaks to make it even better next year... watch this space!!! Thank you to everyone who supported us and helped to make it happen! Branton St Wilfrid’s Primary School.
Merry Christmas from us all at St Oswald’s. We are gearing up for the festive season with a diary of wonderful events including Nativities, Follow the Star (you may have seen us out and about finding parts of the Christmas story in the village!), a visit from Grandpa Stick (our favourite storyteller), our Christingle service at church and a whole school trip to see Sleeping Beauty at CAST (or a visiting pantomime in school for EYFS) - paid for by the fabulous PTA!
We were very excited to hold our ‘Flavour of Christmas’ event at the village hall on 2nd December, where dedicated members of our staff and the PTA created a ‘vintage tea room’ for the day, visited by members of our fabulous community in Finningley, and school. We would like to thank the generous local people and businesses who kindly donated prizes for our raffle and to our customers who helped to make the event magical. Here are a selection of photos from the day – we hope that this is the beginning of many more community events after what feels like the eternity that was the pandemic!
Well it’s a wrap for yet another year What a wonderful day was had by all our special seniors of the village We started with a free raffle to which there were 4 beautiful prizes then the fun began.
Cracker pulling tea and coffee running like a river Sandwich rolls quiche, sausage rolls, salad, Apple pie and cream followed by as many cakes as you could eat ,Mince pies and Christmas cake, Fruit for their 5 a day lots of chocolates and some very happy people. Everyone had doggy bags and went home happy What else can you ask of a party.
May I now mention the great people making this happen Our sponsor Nisa and then the generous donations from ladies winning the bonus ball and giving it back for the party Phil the parish Council Jason Edna Jan Vin and Ash Kev the fishman all the people of the village that donated to the Santa sack all made this afternoon such a success Now my helpers Margaret, David, Janice, Irene, Susan, Jenny who also made the delicious apple pies and of course Santa THANKYOU from the bottom of my heart for this big hit of a day. Bridget Clark.
Year R ‐ In Class R, we have made salt dough decora ons. We measured our ingredients out carefully and mixed them together. We then rolled the dough into a ball using our fine motor skills! We then chose our Christmas shape, pressed it into the dough and once they were cooked, we had great fun decora ng them with lots of gli er and brightly coloured paint. We have really enjoyed making the decora ons and we are very excit‐ed for our adults to purchase our products.
Year 1 – The Year 1 children have been crea ve and have loved making their Enterprise products; Lollipop Christmas Decora ons, using lollipop s cks, paint, pop poms and googgley eyes!
Year 2 – Year 2 have designed and made a selec on of Salt Dough Christmas tree decora ons. They sent a ques onnaire to other KS1 classes to ask for favourite shapes and designs, and then cre‐ated a won‐derful selec‐on to sell at the Christ‐mas Market.
Year 3 – In Year 3, the children have been busy designing, making and finishing their Enterprise products. We began by inves ga ng which glue product was the strongest and then used our findings to glue decora ons to our wooden tree decora ons.
Year 4 ‐ Year 4 have made a selec on of delicious Christmas chocolates, packaged in beau ful handmade boxes for their Enter‐prise project. The children have worked really hard de‐signing, drawing the nets, and making their boxes. They used a range of materials to hand decorate them to meet a design criterion that they created. The children are very proud of what they have achieved. They really do look wonderful and will be a fabulous, tasty treat for over the Christmas period!
Year 5 – The children in Year 5 have been working incredibly hard to create some intricate felt Christmas tree decora ons. We have prac sed two different s tch types across a few a ernoons to make the best product we possibly could.
Year 6 ‐ Year 6 have created tea light holder Christmas decora‐ons for our Enterprise project. We used a range of joining techniques and materials to decorate our jars with ribbon, cinnamon, and berries to give them a fes ve feel. The children surveyed their families and planned their decora ons to meet the needs of their target market. They also built prototypes before making their final crea ons.
On a very wet morning seven Ramblers plus the leader arrived at Sandall Beat Wood Nature Reserve car park. After leaving we took a good track leading towards the children’s playground where some offices are located. A bridge over a railway line was negotiated next. Here particular care was required as wet leaves on wet wooden steps cause a slippage hazard. Wet leaves and sizeable puddles were everywhere but did not cause any problems. Next came a long broad tree lined track looking very autumnal. This narrowed after a while and in due course we arrived at Cantley. We took a break by the shops under a long canopy which at last gave some respite from the rain. After a short break we set off again along residential roads, before emerging on Cantley Lane. Turning left here and left at the next roundabout allowed us to proceed to Old Cantley. By now thankfully it had stopped raining. Another footpath took us away from Old Cantley back into Sandall Beat Wood. A steady walk through the woods brought us to the location where we were earlier in the walk. Rather than going back by the same route, we took a path on the right to reach the landscaped area where Markham Main Colliery used to be. After a short distance we made a descent to where the footbridge was earlier in the walk and made our way back to the car, although the heavy rain returned for the final stretch. David Horne

As you’re reading this I am sure your festive season is well and truly in full swing! At the time our article went to print we were just starting to feel like Christmas at Misson Primary School, with the school being transformed with decorations everywhere we looked. The naughty elves are once again causing chaos this year. So far they have been swinging on our new playground, eating food from our food bank donations and reading books in our Foundation classroom ……..and it’s only the first week. I wonder what else they will be getting up to before we finish for Christmas! Have a look on our Facebook and Instagram pages to see! Final rehearsals are under way as we continue to perfect our carols for our open-air concert. Covid-19 meant we had to adapt our celebrations last year by taking the singing outside, however, it was so magical we have decided to do the same again this Christmas. We are adding to our outside lights collection to make the school look even more amazing on the 20th December!
The children have loved going to our secret Christmas shop again, buying gifts for their loved ones. It is so lovely to see the looks on their faces as they chose gifts and write their own personal labels before we wrap the gifts to take home. Christmas at Misson would not be the same without our annual, whole school trip to the Cast Theatre in Doncaster. What better way to kick start the festive period than closing the school for the afternoon and going to enjoy the panto. As I write this the children are boarding the Kettlewell’s coaches to go watch Sleeping Beauty.
Christmas at Misson Primary School certainly is electric.
