Welcome
to the July issue of
Branton & Auckley Arrow Hey, summer’s here! Hands up who is looking forward to summer? The weather in June was lovely and the light nights are such a treat. As many of us remain in this country for our summer break, I hope the sun continues to shine. Final preparations are in place for the Auckley show and we have details of the ‘Torne Trample’ a 4 mile fun run organised by Danum Harriers on p13. The evening event has already sold out and locals will soon be taking part in the much awaited scarecrow festival. We will all have an incentive to get out and walk on lovely summer evenings taking in the amazing scarecrows and wonderful ideas out there. The new date of 19th July for the lifting of restrictions may have delayed some community groups from getting back to normal, hopefully, we should be in a position to meet again safely by September. If you want to share your groups information in the August issue, please let me know. The deadline for the August issue is Wednesday 14th July. The August issue will be distributed the last full weekend in July.

200 plus club update. S.O.S. Support Our Show We are continuing with our monthly draw, a way in which everyone has an opportunity to support the show. The current situation restricts the way in which we can call and collect payments that are due for renewal. During the last year we have been sending our supporters a letter with suggestions on how best to renew. We thank you for your continued support. Any new members can apply on line through our website. www.auckley.show.co.uk or give me a call to arrange 01302 770818. Scarecrow Festival Once again we will have our annual Scarecrow Festival, when, leading up to Show Day, the village is populated by numerous homemade scarecrows. All you have to do is create your own amusing, amazing or simply unique scarecrow and display him, her or them in front of your home for us all to see. No theme or competition this year, we’ve decided to do it just for fun and to create a community atmosphere on the run up to show day. Or how about decorating with “Yarn Bombing” items alongside (or instead of) your scarecrow? Display yours anytime from 1st August. All scarecrows are invited to the Show, bring them along to decorate the showground.

We at Danum Harriers running club are very proud and happy to be a part of the annual Auckley show once more, especially after the turmoil of the last 12 months that we've all had to contend with - so it'll be great for us as a club to be able to participate in this fantastic local show and give the attendees of the show a taster of what we do and answer a few questions to boot. We intend to put on a small running event again called The Torne Trample. This is a 4 mile riverbank fun run starting and finishing in the show itself, and taking in the picturesque River Torne on both banks. The run will be timed and results posted to our website asap. The club will be bringing a very enthusiastic contingent of Danum Harriers members who will both be running and marshalling the event but also we will also be opening up 20 free places for any participants who fancy joining us on the day as guests of the club. On top of this every finisher will receive a free momento medal and goody bag, and will be more than welcome to come and see us on a Tuesday or Thursday night of their choice at The Doncaster Dome to take part in a free trial session if they like what they see - and we do hope you do take us up on this. All we ask is that each participant fills in a membership form before running, purely for safety reasons and to ensure that we count everybody back in again - with absolutely no obligation to join. All data is kept confidential and will be returned or destroyed as required.
It is 14 months since we have been in touch with you and we sincerely hope you have all managed to stay safe and well. We have continued to work behind the scenes on your behalf, albeit on a reduced basis. Your donations still kept rolling in thankfully and some organisations have also been fundraising on our behalf for which we are extremely grateful. As a result we are thrilled to report that we have been able to purchase the biopsy machine for the Urology Department at Doncaster Royal Infirmary! It has taken quite a lot of organising during the pandemic which is why we have not been able to let you know before now. The official handover and photoshoot will be on 22nd June, after which we will put all the information on our website. We must say a very special thank you to one of our volunteers, Jenny Liddle, who has been our main contact with DRI regarding the biopsy machine. She has put in a tremendous amount of time and effort, all while dealing with a very serious family illness. We would also like to thank each and every one of you who has contributed in any way towards our prostate cancer appeal. It has been such a strange time and has been difficult at times for everyone, but we are so very grateful for your support. If you would like to get in touch with us our contact details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), second floor (lift available), Room 209. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. In next month’s issue we hope to launch our new appeal, so please look out for our news then. It is so good to be back again in print!
Cheers Adi. DHRC Chairman

Selfless, community role model leaves Cantley with Branton Parish Council after 30+ years of service. The parish of Cantley with Branton wishes to extend it’s thanks and appreciation to Councillor Jennifer Worthington, who has just served her last term as a parish councillor within our parish. Jennifer has volunteered her time, effort and Jennifer with her late husband Ralph. commitment for over 30 years to this role, serving (photograph provided by David, Jennifer's Son.) as both Chairman and Vice Chairman on a number of separate terms in office. Our parish has undergone many improvements over this period including the build of Kilham Hall Community Centre, refurbishment of the meeting rooms, installation of a Zebra crossing on Doncaster Road, the creation of the rose garden and development of Kilham Park as well as the ongoing project for a multi use games area and storage extension to the hall. Jennifer has been instrumental in them all. A keen advocate for road safety, having helped secure mobile speed cameras with other parishes and represented our parish at countless committees and meetings outside of normal parish council meetings. In addition to her parish council work, Jennifer has supported many parish councillors who were new to the role. Having a wealth of knowledge, being a qualified Clerk, Jennifer has offered her support to me as Chair of the Parish Council throughout my first term and I will miss her and her fiery spirit at our monthly meetings. Jennifer has always had a keen interest in community life and also served as a Ward Councillor in 1995, the first Labour candidate to win for years, which was down to her hard work and the respect she had gained over her years working within the community as opposed to party politics. Jennifer has strived to make our villages safe, welcoming and a nice place to live. Jennifer joined Auckley Parish Council in the 1980’s where she is still an active member, currently in the role of Chairman. Born in Shirebrook, Mansfield, Jennifer Married her husband Ralph in 1962. They moved to Auckley in 1974, discovering it after visiting Bawtry Caravans (apparently they both hated Caravans!!) They bought a bungalow in Auckley village (a new build at the time) and lived there ever since. Jennifer sadly lost Ralph in December 2020 and continues to live in their beloved bungalow. Jennifer has a son David, daughter in law Nicola and two grandchildren, Evie and Fred, who she adores. David says ‘I know she wanted to become a Parish Councillor to help the local community as she loved and still loves the area. At heart she’s a socialist still and would do anything to help people in need’. A parish councillor full of conviction who stands up for those who need it and never afraid to speak her mind. Jennifer, you are a strong, intelligent, selfless and kind lady, thank you for your service. Michelle Sidebottom on behalf of the Cantley with Branton Parish.

Doncaster Rambler’s Conisbrough Sprotbrough River View
Well it was in February when I received this walk, a River View, today much of the Don was obscured by foliage, not that we minded a bit of shade, as the sun blazed down on us from time to time during the day. The route although relatively simple did require a couple of nifty about turns to stay on the PRoW. Adds to the excitement and mystery of a Ramblers tour. Anyway ten of us set off from Dale Road heading north east up Windgate Hill hugging the tree line on a wide path to pass first under Conisbrough Viaduct then the railway line to reach Sprotbrough Bridge about two and quarter miles later, but not before negotiating two iron “kissing gates” and a heavily rutted tracks. After luncheon on the banks of the Don the return route took us not on the familiar Trans Pennine Trail, but the elevated footpath through Sprotborough Flash where we got the occasional flash of sunlight off the mighty Don. Descending onto the TPT the tarmacked surface providing the ideal substrate for cyclists, who we managed to dodge right and left as we shared the trail. The climb by the side of the viaduct left everyone a little breathless and not just because of the view. We crossed the Don by the Earth Centre and exited via the railway station before a final dramatic view of Conisbrough Castle guided us back to the start. It’s a privilege to lead these Doncaster Ramblers walks and not more so than when a new comer remarks “That was great, loved the walk, loved the company, book me on the next two”! Six and half miles in total PR Doncaster Ramblers The River Don The River Don is a river in South Yorkshire and the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It rises in the Pennines, west of Dunford Bridge, and flows for 70 miles (110 km) eastwards, through the Don Valley, via Penistone, Sheffield, Rotherham, Mexborough, Conisbrough, Doncaster and Stainforth. It originally joined the Trent but was re-engineered by Cornelius Vermuyden as the Dutch River in the 1620s, and now joins the River Ouse at Goole.
