Welcome

to the July issue of the

Branton & AuckLey Arrow What an amazing June we had, so many lovely events held all over the country to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. It was great to see all the bunting decorating our streets, homes and shops,. We have lots of photographs you have shared from some of the events which took part over the weekend. I hope you enjoy them. As we prepare for the holiday season, the Auckley Show preparations are in full flow. This year, you will notice Fairies popping up around the village as everyone prepares for the annual Scarecrow Festival—which has a ‘fairy theme’ So if you are taking part, judging will commence after 1st August. There are still some tickets for the Evening entertainment on Saturday 20th August, details in this month’s Arrow. Congratulations to all students who have now finished their Sats, GCSE’s, A’ Levels and BTEC qualifications, I wish you all the best of luck with your results and a relaxing summer. The August issue deadline is earlier than usual this month due to the holiday period, please send your adverts and articles no later than Wednesday 13th July. The arrow will be delivered before 1st August. Best wishes Michelle Sidebottom Tel: 07795 387937 michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk arrowpublications.co.uk

Community News

Cantley with Branton Parish Council litter pick took place on Saturday 28th May and we were delighted to welcome some new volunteers. The team collected over 25 bags of rubbish and identified a fly tipping site which has since been sorted. Thanks to the Premier in Branton for offering the litter pickers drinks as they were on the job and to Laura and Paul Local from the Local in Branton for offering a round of drinks to all the volunteers. Huge thanks goes to our amazing team of volunteers who make this possible. We are so lucky to live in such a beautiful village with such a wonderful sense of community spirit. The next Litter pick is to be confirmed at the next Parish Council meeting but we have pencilled in Saturday 3rd September. The Parish Council Clerk will confirm the date after the meeting in July. Please come along and join in if you can. Any help you can offer is appreciated, All equipment and instructions are provided. The regular volunteers are good fun and very welcoming. Can't praise Matt's work enough. He fitted a kitchen for us about 12 months ago and we were so impressed we invited him back to panel our staircase and landing. We were not disappointed. His attention to detail is second to none. Matt is a true perfectionist and we would highly recommend his excellent skills to anyone.

Here at the RSPCA Doncaster and Rotherham Branch, we care for over 1000 animals per year ranging from dogs, cats, puppies and kittens to birds, wildlife and rabbits. We aim to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome every animal that we care for. That being said, some animals are in our care longer than others. Below you will find our current long stays residents, all of whom are ready and waiting for their forever families. Mable and Maple are our current longest stay residents. They are a pair of young sister rabbits who have been in our care for over 7 months, after being found stray at a young age. They have spent the vast majority of their life with us and sadly have never experienced a loving family home. Like most other rabbits, they love their fresh vegetables and will make a great addition to any home. As they are bonded to one another they will need to find a home that is happy to accept both of them. Our longest stay feline residents are Elijah and Erica, this bonded pair started their cattery journey being quite timid, but since settling in and making friends with staff, they are now a super affectionate pair and love having fusses. Since they have been in our care, they are starting to show more of their true selves.

10

They are looking for the perfect home where they can grow their personalities even more. Elijah and Erica would be best suited to a family with no other pets and children over the age of 12. Stella is our longest stay canine. She's only 11 months old and has been with us for almost 4 months now. Stella's a sweet girl and could live with children over 12 years old. She would need to be the only dog in the household for now. Due to a leg injury early on in life, Stella requires physiotherapy treatment and would need a family who understands she may need additional care in the future. Whether you are on the lookout for a dynamic duo or a sole companion, we have a wide variety of animals currently available for adoption – from dogs and cats to rabbits and guinea pigs. When one of our animals becomes available for adoption, they are posted on our website (https:// www.rspcadoncasterrotherham.org.uk/animals-foradoption) and Facebook page. If you are interested in adopting an animal, please follow the process that is explained on our website. There are many ways to help RSPCA Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch with our mission to rehome and rehabilitate animals including volunteering, donating cash or goods, leaving a legacy, and sponsoring through our Safe Haven programme and attending events. We have charity shops at Bawtry, Rossington and Thorne, as well as eBay and Depop. At the Animal Centre, we rehabilitate and rehome the animals in our care and have a pet supplies store on site for all your requirements.

Finningley Parish Council JUNE/JULY Newsletter

Platinum Jubilee Celebration The Parish Council were delighted to support this unique event by organising the party on the Joint Finningley and Blaxton Playing Field. The weather could have been kinder to us but that did not stop the large number of residents from getting their coats on and taking their picnics down on to the playing field and having a great time. Many thanks are also due to those who responded to our late call for extra gazebos to help shield from the weather and those who came early to help put out the flags and bunting and other necessary safety measures. We must also thank the various stall holders and catering outlets that provided the much welcomed warm food. Particular thanks must be given to Councillors Kong and Tuff who organised the whole event and survived the stress that is always present when such events are planned. The greatest thanks however, are due to those of you who turned up and clearly enjoyed the afternoon. It was a pleasure to see so many smiling faces and read the many positive comments posted on Social Media. We also want to thank you for respecting the playing fields, taking your litter away with you and leaving it in such a pristine condition.

The Village Pond In our last newsletter we noted that we were having difficulties in obtaining quotes for the proposed work to the village pond. Sadly we have to report that we have only received one quote and it is significantly above the resource we have available. We are looking at how we can resolve this issue.

Council Vacancies Regrettably Councillor Creighton has found it necessary to resign from the council. Doncaster Council have been informed and they have started the process for filling the vacancy. Please look out for the notices and if you are interested in joining the Council please do make contact, details will be on the notices issued by Doncaster Council. We are also seeking a new Clerk and Responsible Financial Officer for the Council. The post is part time (Between 9 and 12 hours per week) and paid in accordance with National guidelines. More information is available from the Chair of the Parish Council, Robert Castle.

Doncaster Rambler’s Misson Circular For being such a relatively small village, Misson has a surprisingly long entry in Wikipedia, mentioned in the Doomsday Book in 1086, visited by Archbishop of York, Thomas Wolsey, in 1530, and in 1693 became one of the first in Nottinghamshire to open a school. Today a group of ten Doncaster Ramblers chose Misson as their set off for a five and half mile circular walk. Starting at St John the Baptist Church, David Horne our walk leader today, took us out through the winding streets of Misson out onto Slaynes Lane which at over a mile straight gave us ample opportunity to bask in the morning sun while enjoying the aquatic landscape all around. Exposed as we were David encouraged frequent refreshment stops to prevent dehydration. Eventually reaching the tiny hamlet of Newington, (also with a long entry in Wiki) and the Ship Inn The name may reflect the fact that the adjacent River Idle was navigable to Bawtry in the middle ages. Continuing passed the pub, then at a T-Junction we turned right along High Street to Austerfield. Famed for being the birth place of William Bradford Pilgrim Father and Governor of Plymouth Colony, we stopping briefly at St Helena’s Church, where William was christened. Further along High Street at a finger post we turned right down Low Common Lane to reach “The Common” an area of green which brough back childhood memories for at least one of our group. Today it provided the idea spot for a lay down. Eventually it was time to move on and after a bit of effort standing up, the footpath went through a short stretch of shade, before opening out onto farmland. At a waymarker we turned right again to follow a narrow footpath with agricultural land on both sides, grazing to the left, and corn on the cob right. There followed a one and half mile trek back to Misson, including two wooden foot bridges. Arriving safely back at the start we thanked David for a great walk and hoped to see each other again next week on the Roche Abbey Round Peter Rowsell.
