Welcome

to the June issue of the

Branton & AuckLey Arrow What an amazing gift to be granted as we start the celebrations of Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The Arrow is so proud to be part of Doncaster City and very excited for the future. Jubilee plans are well under way throughout the villages with something planned for everyone. Check with your Parish Council for details, the latest information up to 22nd May is included in this issue. Many residents are organising their own street parties for Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th June so check for any road closures. Branton have their next litter pick on Saturday 28th May. Everyone is welcome to help out, we are hoping to have the village looking its best for the Jubilee bank holiday weekend, The July issue deadline is Wednesday 15th June. The magazines will be delivered the last full weekend in June. I hope everyone has a wonderful Jubilee weekend making special memories with friends and family. Best wishes Michelle Sidebottom Tel: 07795 387937 michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk arrowpublications.co.uk

Community News

Doncaster is a City!

Many of us woke up to the news on Friday 20th May that Her Majesty the Queen has given Doncaster town, City status along with a number of other UK towns. This is amazing news and I am so excited to see what we can achieve in the coming years. Doncaster has so much already going for it with Doncaster Sheffield Airport, Yorkshire Wildlife Park, IPORT, Great Yorkshire Way, Danum Gallery, Library and Museum, Cast and of course, the famous Doncaster Racecourse, not to mention the fantastic people and businesses. There are of course, areas that are in great need of improvement and this new City status takes us one step closer to achieving a better place to live and work for us all. Nick Fletcher MP for Don Valley said ‘I am delighted that after such a long campaign against many worthy other towns the bid put in by Doncaster Council has been recognised and Doncaster has finally been granted City status. I have worked hard for this moment as have others. This will help us build a strong local economy in Doncaster. New businesses. New jobs. New money. City status will really stimulate this. This is what I was elected to do. Bring change that is positive in every respect. Fantastic news!’ Doncaster MBC put out a statement on facebook to say ‘We are VERY pleased to confirm that Doncaster has won City Status as part of Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Celebrations! Doncaster is one of 8 new cities to have won the honour. Thank you to everyone who gave us such amazing support to make our bid a winning one!’ There will no doubt be many more questions raised as to what next, but this is a fabulous start to the new future of Doncaster City.

Can't praise Matt's work enough. He fitted a kitchen for us about 12 months ago and we were so impressed we invited him back to panel our staircase and landing. We were not disappointed. His attention to detail is second to none. Matt is a true perfectionist and we would highly recommend his excellent skills to anyone.

Thank You to the Auckley JFC Under 11s

A massive thank you to the Auckley Junior Football Club Under 11s who as the Under 10s in 2021, donated £438.45 towards the purchase of the defibrillator that is available to the community at the side of the Pavilion on Riverside Park. Local man who shares the same birth year as Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 11 celebrates 72 years of marriage. In March 2022, I had the absolute pleasure to meet Eric and Joan Allsopp at their home in Blaxton. On 11th March, Eric and Joan celebrated their 72nd Wedding Anniversary and were sent a Royal card from Her Majesty the Queen, congratulating them. Eric and Joan, who got married in March 1950, met on a blind date and eric said ‘It was love at first sight’. Eric and Joan have 2 Sons and 6 grandchildren. I asked what their secret was for a long successful marriage, they both agreed that making time for each other no matter how busy, they would nip to the pub for lunch once a week! Eric also added that it helped by choosing the right person in the first place! Eric was also born the same year as Queen Elizabeth in 1926 so celebrates his 96th birthday this month. Eric joined the Army Glider Pilot Regiment in his younger days and both Eric and Joan still support The Not Forgotten charity which the Princess Royal is Patron. The charity, founded in 1920 provides events for wounded serving personnel and disabled veterans, which improve physical and mental health, address isolation and loneliness, and promote a sense of community and balance. www.thenotforgotten.org I know you will join me in wishing Eric a very Happy Birthday. Newsletter New Chairman After 7 years as Chairman, Councillor Michelle Sidebottom made the difficult decision to step down due to increased work commitments. Councillor Stephen Ward has taken on this role and we are sure he will receive the same level of support from residents and Councillors alike that Councillor Sidebottom did. Councillor Sidebottom will remain on the Parish council and all members continue to do the best they can to continue to improve our Parish for the benefit of residents. Welcome to Steve Maskill We are pleased to announce Steve Maskill started in the role of Handyman/Gardener on 11/04/22. Steve has a hard act to follow after Martin left us in December 2021 after 20+ years in post. We're hoping Steve will bring the Parish back to its former glory and beyond. If you see Steve around Kilham Hall or around the Parish please be sure to say hi to him and make him feel welcome in his new role in our wonderful Parish. Parish Council Meetings Parish Council meetings are being held in Kilham Hall Meeting Rooms on the 1st Wednesday of each month at 6pm except August (no meeting is held due to holidays). The Agenda and Draft Minutes are posted on the website/notice boards/Facebook page along with a schedule of future meeting dates. Acquisition of a Storage Extension for Kilham Hall and Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) Work is due to start on the new brick built storage extension on Kilham Hall towards the end of August 2022. The MUGA specification has been agreed and the Parish Council’s Architects are hoping to submit a planning application very shortly. In the meantime the Parish Council are applying for additional funding by way of a grant application to bridge the gap in funding due to increases costs due to COVID. Acquisition of a New Defibrillator The Parish Council applied for a grant via Doncaster Sheffield Airport Community Investment fund to be able to purchase a 2nd defibrillator for the parish. The Parish Council were informed that they were successful in their application and the funds would be released some time in the near future. Keep an eye on the Parish Council Facebook page for where the new defibrillator will be sited. Litter Pick Thanks are again expressed to those giving up their time to take part in the 28th May 2022 litter pick. Volunteers keep the areas free from litter and hazards. Litter pickers were able to use the new equipment and safety wear provided by the Parish Council through their successful grant application. Parish Council Facebook Page Please like the Parish Council’s Facebook page where it continues to share useful information. The Parish Council have had numerous comments from residents to say they find the new page very useful and informative. Please search Cantley with Branton Parish Council on Facebook. our school always comes alive at this time of year. With the fields and countryside on our doorstep we always try and make the most of our local environment by planning our lessons and activities around our beautiful village. Our EYFS and KS1 children enjoyed going on an animal hunt recently, whilst going for a walk in the country. The excitement on their faces was priceless as they discovered a field full of new born lambs. One very kind grandparent brought in some new born chicks this week to surprise our EYFS children. The students in our Foundation class were mesmerised by the tiny little animals, even though they made such a noise! Not only did they hold and pet them, they also had the chance to feed them and learn all about what makes them grow and how they produce eggs. These two activities really helped the children understand the different life cycles, whilst being out in the fresh air and having fun. We planted sunflowers this year for Mother’s Day, which was particularly poignant with it being the national flower of the Ukraine.
