Spring 2022 Newsletter The boundaries for the Parish Council are Branton, Old Cantley, and a small area of South Bessacarr (parts of Warning Tongue Lane, Bawtry Road and the Manor Farm Development). The Council overlooks bins, benches, communal gardens at Whiphill Top Lane and Doncaster Road, Kilham Hall Grounds and Car Park, the Play and Gym Equipment, floral planters, the defibrillator, newsletters and many other areas. Parish Precept 2022/23 The precept is a levy raised from Central Government and forms part of your annual Council Tax bill. Cantley with Branton Parish Council have tried not to raise its precept in recent years. This year the Council has resolved to raise the precept with an increase of 2.98% for a Band D equivalent property which is equivalent to £0.84 per annum. This is due to an increase in general costs from suppliers and contractors, the supply of Christmas Illuminations around the Parish in 2022 and contributing to events held at Kilham Hall such as Jubilee Celebrations and Pantomimes. Use of Kilham Hall Car Park From the 1st March 2022 the car park will open from 9am until 6pm, 7 days per week until the 31st October 2022. It will close when the Hall is hired out, please take note of the signage when visiting. Keeping the Parish of Cantley with Branton Tidy The Parish Council were successful with their grant application to enable it to purchase its own litter picking equipment for future picks and this has now been delivered. The litter pick took place on Saturday 19th February 2022. Another date will be set in due course – please keep an eye on the facebook page and website. The Parish Council would like to express their gratitude and thanks to the volunteers who take part in the litter picks. Police ‘Drop In’ Session on 19th January 2022 at 1.30pm The Police Drop In for January was cancelled due to SYP guidance relating to attending face to face meetings and COVID guidance. A recurring issue at previous drop in’s has been speeding traffic on Whiphill Top Lane. The Clerk has made contact with the Safety Cameras and Ticket Processing department of South Yorkshire Police to determine if strips can be placed across the road to record speeding traffic. It has been confirmed to determine the extent of the problem, they will arrange for a speed survey to be conducted and once they have the results from the survey they will conduct a review of the location and decide if intervention is required. They will then contact the Clerk with their findings. Speeding issues on Warning Tongue Lane have also been reported to the PCSO’s for targeting with speed guns. The dates for the next police ‘Drop In’ session are 30th March at 6.30pm and 25th May 2022 at 1.30pm at Kilham Hall Meeting Room. All dates will be published on the website and facebook page. Storage Extension at Kilham Hall and MUGA on Kilham Hall Field A site visit took place on 13th January 2022 with DMBC, the Architects and members of the Parish Council. We hope to have a date for commencement of work in the very near future. Keep an eye on the website and facebook page for more details. The Queen’s Jubilee 2022 The Queen’s Jubilee 2022 is from Thursday 2nd June 2022 to Sunday 5th June 2022. The Parish Council are opening Kilham Hall on Thursday 2nd June 11am to 4pm for teas/coffees/cakes. All are welcome. We’d love to hear your ideas on events that could take place within the Parish. On Sunday 5th June 2022 people are encouraged to share friendship, food and fun with neighbours as part of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations. A Big Jubilee Lunch can be big or small - street party or picnic, tea and cake or a garden barbeque. The Big Lunch provides tips and ideas for hosting an event. www.edenprojectcommunities.com/the-big-jubilee-lunch. Do we have any residents that are the same age as the Queen who could celebrate with us? Do you have any photographs and music from the era?

Can't praise Matt's work enough. He fitted a kitchen for us about 12 months ago and we were so impressed we invited him back to panel our staircase and landing. We were not disappointed. His attention to detail is second to none. Matt is a true perfectionist and we would highly recommend his excellent skills to anyone.

The last day of our half term saw our students take part in numerous activities to celebrate the Chinese New Year. All the children came together in mixed age teams, led by our amazing year 6. They made paper lanterns, which when finished displayed different inspirational words, such as hope, love and happiness. Everyone contributed to painting part of a 32 piece tiger artwork with acrylic paint and pastels, which when put together will be displaying on our Proud Wall in the school hall. Every student made a red envelope, this colour symbolising ‘Good Luck’. These were to keep their own affirmation quote safe about themselves, along with a lucky coin to take home to their families. Mr Birch, our head teacher supported every child in enthusiastically sampling Chinese pancakes, with cucumber, spring onion and hoisin sauce, while trying to negotiate chop sticks. Like all schools, this has been an extremely challenging half term for everyone at Misson Primary School, with all but two staff being off at some point across the 6 weeks. Our Chinese celebrations has been a perfect end weeks of adapting, change and thinking on our feet, but the children, as always have been a credit to themselves and their families.

BRANTON ST WILFRID’S PRIMARY SCHOOL This half term Year R have been focusing our learning through 'Bringing Books to Life'. Our main focus book has been 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears'. We have done lots of fabulous writing based around the story and we have even changed the story to create our own versions. Our Understanding the World focus has been looking at maps and thinking about the history of our school. We received a letter from Goldilocks with a map to lead us to the secret, magic cottage and we had to follow the map around our school to find it. This was so much fun and we found out how to use a map. We also had a look at some photographs of our school from many years ago. We really enjoyed looking at similarities and differences from the years gone by. We even managed to find some familiar faces! In Maths we are becoming amazing at subitising. We can recognise groups of pictures or objects up to 5 without even needing to count them, and we are able to explain our ideas using fantastic mathematical vocabulary.

Year 4 have been loving their new topic ‘Road Trip USA,’ and their American adventure is proving to be lots of fun! At their Engage Event, they had their passports checked before jetting off across the Atlantic Ocean to explore USA’s most popular states including New York, California and Nevada. The children created a USA fact file, got to eat some American food, learnt lots of new knowledge about North America including about its landscapes, and discovered how New York has changed through time, comparing it to London. As part of our topic, Year 4 have gained lots of new geographical skills such as the eight points of a compass, how to read a map using 4 –figure grid reference's, and how to draw sketch maps. Next, they are looking forward to learning about the Native Americans, including how they lived and also create their own travel brochure for the USA.

DANUM PROBUS CLUB Since the last note about Danum Probus, which was published in Autumn last year, the Club has undergone some changes. The membership has now been extended so that not just men are eligible for membership, anybody who qualifies is. The other big change is that we are now meeting in a “new to us” venue, which is the Doncaster Sports Club in Bennethorpe, half a mile or so away form our old meeting place at the Golf Club. Danum Probus Club is a group of people who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Doncaster Sports Club, Bennethorpe, Doncaster starting at 10 am. The first meeting at the new venue was held on Monday 7 February. After everybody got settled in to their unfamiliar surroundings, and the formal business was completed, we enjoyed an informative presentation from Abigail Reid about domestic waste and re-cycling. Abi took us through the collection process, which featured the colours of the collecting containers, and how the various collections were sent on for re-use. The most difficult procedure appears to be the sorting of general waste from the black bins. Much of this finishes up at the joint recycling facility that Doncaster Barnsley and Rotherham Councils run at the old Manvers site. It was a really informative lecture and judging by the number of questions asked, well appreciated by Club members. In March the two Monday meetings will on the 7th and 21st of the month. Paul Adey will speak about the “British Motor Industry” on the 7th and Keith Lumley will be “Avoiding Disaster” on the 21st”. Between these two events at the Sports Club, we will meet at “Ye Olde Bell” at Barmby Moor on Thursday 17 March for our Spring Members and Guests Lunch at 12 noon for 12-30pm. Anyone who would like to come the meetings as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please contact David Allen (07395 128759) for more information or e-mail enquiries@danumprobus.co.uk
