Interested in Woodturning? Would you like to meet up with people with a similar interest? How about coming along to Doncaster Woodturning Club? We are a small, growing band of people, just like you, who have found enjoyment and the occasional small profit from shaping wood on a lathe. Projects range from boxes, bowls and platters, candle holders of all sorts of shapes and sizes, model steam engines and artistic pieces which include wood inlays, piercing and colour. Pieces both useful and purely decorative. Members come from a wide range of backgrounds, though most have a practical nature and, inevitably, many are retired. We meet at Finningley Village Hall twice a month. Like to know more? Phone Geoff on 01977 646902, Tony on 07903 325949 or Chris on 01226 725647 for a chat and more details. Community News

We have been in talks with consultants at Doncaster Royal Infirmary regarding our skin cancer appeal and we are thrilled to report that we have the funds to purchase a vital piece of equipment they need. It is a three-dimensional camera which will enable students in Doncaster (and potentially all over the world) to learn a new basal cell carcinoma technique via electronic communication. The technique involves excising the basal cell carcinoma and achieving a primary closure of the wound without the need for skin grafting. Doncaster is a centre of excellence for this procedure. In the whole country there are only three centres working at this level. We are excited to confirm that, as mentioned previously, we can hold our Memory Tree event in Frenchgate Centre on the run-up to Christmas. This is where you can purchase a Christmas tree ornament in memory of a loved one. It will start on Monday, 29th November and will finish on Saturday, 18th December. Provisional times will be from 10am to 3pm each day. In the meantime if you would like to get in touch with us our details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), second floor (lift available), Room 209. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. Please do keep supporting us. We strive to raise money to purchase cancer-related equipment for our local hospitals which in turn hopefully helps improve the lives of local people and beyond. Our very grateful thanks to you all.

NEWS FROM BRANTON ST WILFRID’S C OF E PRIMARY SCHOOL On Friday 17th September, Class R had some VERY special visitors! To support our learning of the 'Owl Babies' story, we welcomed three beau ful owls into our school for the morning, along with a few other interes ng creatures. The children had the opportunity to hold and stoke the owls and find out lots of informa on about them. What an amazing experience! Year 2 have been able to learn outside this half term in the new Forest School. The children used their problem solving and team work skills to build bridges and dens, were creative in the mud kitchen and designed eco-friendly woodland animals from pine cones, grass and leaves. They’ve had so much fun over the past few weeks!

18

Our Year 6 pupils had a fantastic day trip to Eden Camp to tie in with their first topic of the year ‘A Child’s War,’ which is a history and geography focus on the Second World War. The children were incredibly interested in the displays and learnt a great deal.

The start of October may have seen the temperature drop and the weather change, but that didn’t dampen the spirits of the 37 children in our year 3, 4 and 5 classes who enjoyed a fun, action packed two days / one night residential at Austerfield Study Centre. So many things were crammed into the two days, such as the studying of rocks on day one and pond dipping on day two. The making of dens and hammocks is always a favourite, and once again the activity provided so many giggles from all who took part. The children’s independence and resilience shone through as everyone took part in team building activities and tree climbing before tucking into a delicious meal provided locally by The Ship Inn at Newington. Staff at the centre commented on the size of the children’s appetites after such a crazy day, as well as their lovely manners. Before heading off to their bedrooms, everyone settled around the camp fire for toasted marshmallows and chocolate digestives.
