Welcome to the October issue of

Branton & Auckley Arrow They did it! Well done to Neil Woodward and the Auckley show committee who put on this years event after missing last year because of covid. The show was well attended and fun was had by all. Congratulations to everyone behind the scenes, I know how much work and effort goes into organising the event, but it is so worth it. September has probably been our most normal month so far since the first lockdown, I know many people are still very worried and covid has not left us yet, but it is so nice to have things open again and local businesses can get back to what they do best. This month we have a feature on the discovery of a ship named after the village of Blaxton! See p24. The deadline for the November issue is Wednesday 20th October. The November issue will be distributed the last full weekend in October. Happy Halloween everyone.

Community News Just Friends

A group of ‘like minded’ people who work together to support local charities and initiatives. A huge THANKYOU to the 43 people who contacted us after reading our article in your magazine, donations included 2 car loads of clean used towels for Water Aid and lots of really nice knitting wool. One car load of towels was delivered by our Rotary contact directly to Water Aids Head Office in Matlock, but you kept giving more so I delivered the next 12 bags! I hope you enjoyed tidying your cupboards out and that you found it satisfying, doing a job well and helping others.

Blaxton Village Hall Macmillan Coffee Morning

The knitting wool has been used by our members and friends to make garments and hats for children and blankets of varying sizes, they were planned for Water Aid but their needs have changed. They kindly provided another contact for their distribution which we are currently following up.

We raised £303.32 for Macmillan Cancer Support. Thanks to local business for their donation to the Tombola.

Thank you to the community for your support.

Autumn Newsletter Parish Council Meetings Parish Council meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month, except August where no meeting is held due to the holiday season. The next Parish Council meeting will be on Wednesday 6th October 2021 in the Kilham Hall meeting rooms. The Agenda will be posted on the parish council website, notice boards and facebook page along with a schedule of meeting dates. Police ‘Drop In’ Session Planned for 29th September 2021 The Police Drop In for July saw a few members of the public in attendance. Issues raised were regarding recent burglaries and speed awareness on Whiphill Top Lane. PCSO’s have been on Kilham Lane recently with speed guns. They mentioned a Scheme where local residents can receive training on the use of speed guns to enable more frequent speed checks to be carried out. If anyone is interested please email the Clerk to the Parish Council (cwbpc@outlook.com) with details so they can be forwarded. The date for the next police ‘Drop In’ session has been arranged for the above date at Kilham Hall Meeting Room starting at 1.30pm. Keeping the Parish of Cantley with Branton Tidy Thanks are again expressed to those giving up their time to take part in the July 2021 litter pick in Branton and Old Cantley keeping the area free from litter and hazards. A further litter pick will be arranged for October 2021. We are hoping to branch out into the Manor Farm area of the Parish. If any residents from Old Cantley or Manor Farm would like to join us please contact the Clerk. Use of Kilham Hall Car Park It has been agreed that the car park will remain open for park users, however as Kilham Hall is open again, when the hall is in use it will be for the hirers use (and their guests) only. The Parish Council are currently considering permanent signage for the car park to ensure it is clear when the car park can be used. The car park will open from 9am until 6pm each day, 7 days per week. Illuminated Trees and New Site for an Additional Christmas Tree Works have been approved for illuminating two existing trees at Old Cantley/McAuley roundabout and for a new Christmas tree to be purchased and situated at the top of Whiphill Top Lane/ Doncaster Road/Milton Road. DMBC will be carrying out the groundworks and installing the relevant electricity boxes prior to the festive period. The Parish Council hope to be able to add more trees around the Parish in the coming years. Storage Extension at Kilham Hall Legal work is progressing and we hope to have a date for commencement of work in the very near future. Keep an eye on the website and facebook page for more details. AUCKLEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2021 Auckley Show The Parish Council wishes to thank members of the Auckley Show Committee for presenting another successful Show on 21st August 2021. As usual there was a varied programme of events to interest every age group, followed by a superb evening of entertainment. Council recognises the tremendous amount of work that the Committee puts in throughout the year to make this an important and enjoyable event for Auckley and the local area. Auckley Parish Neighbourhood Plan Consultation A Public Consultation will be held at the Auckley Junior and Infants’ School on 20th October between 6 – 9 p.m. This is an opportunity for residents to see information about the Parish. Provision of CCTV Camera Council has placed an order for a CCTV Camera to be installed on a lamp post adjacent to the new recreation ground at Hayfield Lane, and this will monitor any incidents at the park and surrounding areas. Overhanging Hedges and Vegetation DMBC has been informed of a number of hedges in residential gardens which are overhanging footpaths and in need of trimming back. In addition, a request has been made for vegetation in the gutters to be sprayed. Motorists on Bell Butts Lane In spite of the new entrance from Hurst Lane to Yorkshire Wildlife Park’s car parking area, some motorists are driving along Bell Butts Lane in the hope that they can take a short cut to reach the parking ground. However, there is no access from the lane, and a sign has been requested to clarify the situation.

HMS Blaxton

It was by shear chance while looking at past ships I’d served on, that I saw HMS Blaxton amongst the Ton class minesweepers. Having lived in Blaxton for several years and now serve as a Parish Councillor for our village, I started to investigate what connection there was with this Royal Navy warship and our village. To my surprise, and with the help of the Ton Class Association, I discovered the ship was actually named after our village. The Parish Council unanimously voted and agreed to bring this part of history back to life and purchased the ships crest and picture that now hangs in it’s new home, Blaxton Village hall. I don’t know if anyone in the village is aware of the connection, but it has sparked ia lot of interest and residents are rightly proud of this discovery. Our neighbouring village Finningley have the honour of the RAF station named after them, and Blaxton had a warship by grace of the Admiralty! Here is the ships history which is situated beneath the framed photograph of HMS Blaxton at the hall. TON CLASS MINESWEEPERS At the end of the Second World War it was generally accepted that the emphasis on mining at sea had shifted from deeply laid moored mines to ground mines laid in the shallow approaches to ports and harbours. The large steel-built ocean minesweepers were, therefore, mostly unsuitable for sweeping sophisticated modern mines laid in coastal and inshore waters. As a result, a team was formed at Bath in the UK in 1947 to design the next generation of minesweepers. This team produced two sets of hull drawings in 1949 for the construction of future inshore and coastal mine countermeasures vessels, each hull design being further sub-categorized into two variants, namely a minesweeper and a minehunter. Although no orders were initially placed, mainly owing to a lack of funding, the impending offensive in Korean waters led to the acquisition programme being brought forward to September 1950. Although the original names allocated to the coastal minesweepers were those of insects, this was later changed to villages in the UK ending in ‘TON’. M1132, a minesweeper, was named HMS Blaxton after our village. The Ton Class proved to be a very successful design with over one hundred units built in the British yards between 1951 and 1960. Over thirty units were subsequently transferred to Commonwealth and foreign navies during the ensuing years, and the same basic design was also adopted by many Western navies for their own local construction programmes. John I. Thornycroft & Co Ltd, of Southampton, acted as parent firm to the group of fifteen smaller shipbuilders responsible for constructing these vessels, which were designed to sweep both moored and ground mines. With the exception of the double mahogany hull planking, almost the entire vessel was constructed from light aluminium alloy and other materials with the lowest possible magnetic field to achieve optimum safety when sweeping for magnetic mines. They were protected from pressure mines by their low displacement, and the threat of moored mines was greatly reduced by their shallow draught. To prevent potential damage caused by marine parasites, they were also fitted with a protective ‘Cascover’ nylon sheathing on the outer hull below the waterline."

The committee are delighted to declare another successful Show, made possible with the help of our volunteers, sponsors and supporters. I need to mention the tremendous effort of the committee, we all learned new skills and put it all together via ZOOM meetings. We were only able to have one face-to-face meeting in August three days before the show. The Committee’s satisfaction and pride in seeing everyone having a good time at the Show is a result of their hard work and enthusiasm throughout the year and especially on Show weekend. I think everyone was ready for a good old get together after such difficult times. We have had some amazing feedback about all aspects of the show, in particular re the new Children’s Entertainment Marquee. This was purposely designed

26

without sidewalls to create a well- ventilated area to sit undercover and enjoy refreshments. Thanks go to Yorkshire Wildlife Park who helped fund this. We think it proved so popular it’s got to be a regular feature of the show. We broke a few records this year, our fundraisers, the Raffle and Auction of unclaimed exhibits, did well. Apologies for no tombola this year, which was cancelled to create more social distancing, let’s all hope it will be back for 2022. Our aim was to make the show happen and at the same time make it as safe as possible for everyone. Thanks to DMBC for help funding the sanitising stations around the showground.

Cheryl took the ‘Fun Dog Show’ to another level and took over the main arena with support from ‘Agility Wagtails’ from Beverley. Cheryl arranged some drone footage of the show to be filmed. This can be viewed on our website together with the photos taken by Rod Gunn from Doncaster Camera Club, thanks Rod. We must thank the loyal contributors and new comers of all ages who entered their exhibits in the many classes in the Exhibits tent. They made a wonderful display and we hope you all enjoyed the fun of taking part. Thanks Amazone for once again sponsoring the rosettes. The stallholders in the Craft marquee were pleased with their day selling their many varied items. The Children’s disco and our Saturday evening event were well-attended and enjoyed by all. The Bierkeller Schunklers and Martin Kaye kept all ages entertained. The ‘Eagle and Child’ Outside stage was popular with Helen Evans and Freightdogs performing there and in the Main Marquee. Thanks for the support of our sponsors The Auckley Parish Council and our neighbours Branton Parish Council. Also Michelle at Arrow Publications for helping us during the past year. You can now follow us on Twitter, @auckleyshow, and why not become a friend on our Facebook page? If you follow us we can keep you up to date with plans for our community, please leave your photos, feedback and suggestions to make the show even better. The next Auckley Show date has been set for Saturday 20th August 2022. If you would like to contribute through sponsorship, help out on the day or become a committee member get in touch for further details. Our committee meetings are held once a month. We are always looking for new ideas to keep the Show the best and biggest free day out in the area. We also welcome your comments on how you feel we can improve, please send an email to chairman@auckleyshow.co.uk or just give me a call on 01302 770818. Our thanks to everyone for your continued support. Regards Neil Woodward Chairman, Auckley Show
