Welcome
to the September issue of
Branton & Auckley Arrow As Summer comes to an end, it has been so lovely to see some of our usual activities return with people being able to meet up and enjoy socialising once again. Poppyfields Estate in Branton held a summer party on the field which was attended by many residents. It felt wonderful to meet up with neighbours, old and new, and spend some quality time having fun and games together. The Auckley show is another example of how our community is bouncing back, but we know we need to continue to take steps to keep ourselves and those we love safe. Congratulations to all our local students who received their GCSE and A’ level results in August. It has been a record year and must come as a relief for many after the chaos of the last 18 months. Good luck to everyone starting new schools, colleges, 6th forms, universities or work. I hope you are given every opportunity to follow your dreams. The deadline for the October issue is Wednesday 18th September. The October issue will be distributed the last full weekend in September. Keep safe everyone.

New Barber Shop on our doorstep There is no longer the need to travel far to benefit from up to the minute men’s grooming… meet Jamie Rudduck, the owner of this new ‘cutting edge’ Barbers in Branton. Jamie has worked hard over the years perfecting the art of professional grooming for men. It has long been a dream for Jamie to open his own Barber Shop. Starting his training with Doncaster town centre Barber’, Spreadlove, Jamie moved on to the well known Mens room in Edenthorpe and worked there for over a year before lockdown. Having built up a large portfolio of loyal clients, Jamie has now been able to fulfil his ambition with the opening of Grade Zero, in Branton, replacing Flairs Hairstylists. ‘Being a barber for me is more than just cutting hair, it's being able to build friendships, get to know people, help them build trust in you so they come back time and time again.... As the owner of Grade Zero it's my goal to make every customer feel welcome and valued, with time taken on each and everyone of you to get to know you and send you out feeling good. I will only produce the best service and high quality cuts, anything less is not acceptable. I know coming to Grade Zero will be the best choice you can make and one you won't regret. See you in the chair, look forward to it.’ Jamie has also taken on Keaton O’shaughnessy to help grow Grade Zeros clientele... ‘Hi guys, so I’m Keatan, some call me Keats. I’ve been in the barbering industry for a little over 5 years now working under some great barbers and really perfecting my craft. I take great pride in what I do and I don’t let you out the chair until I’m completely happy with your cut. Anything from the skin fade to a graduation scissor cut I’m your man so don’t hesitate to book with me. Let’s have some perfect cuts and even better laughs while we are at it. See you soon.’ For more details, call 01302 535315 or follow Grade Zero on Instagram and facebook.

Beginners Bridge Club We are a small group of affable people who like to play friendly non-competitive Bridge from beginner level upwards. We would really like more members to bolster this new club, meeting on Thursday afternoons at the Thurlow Pavillion in Epworth. Each time we have a short teaching session, followed by quite a lot of not too serious playing. Bridge is a card game that can be as difficult (or as easy) as you want to make it, but it isn’t a black art ... it can be played as a casual card game or as an intellectual challenge, and sometimes psychic powers can be useful too! The game is all about partnership & needs some concentration, but you don’t need to be an expert to play. Even if you’ve never played before we can show you the basics & get you playing almost straight away. Although it helps if you have a regular partner you can come on your own & we will find you a partner. If you want to come, then you will need to join our club. Whatever your card playing abilities you will be made most welcome. e-mail: isleplaybridge@gmail.com for more details
Here we are into the last quarter of the year already….it hardly seems possible. We do hope you have managed to enjoy some change of scenery during the main holiday month or else have something exciting planned for next year. News of our new appeal ! We are going to focus on skin cancer. According to the NHS website it is one of the most common cancers in the world. As we look forward to our holidays abroad (as well as in this country) many of us plan to enjoy a week or two in the sun. It is only in the past few years that we have learnt the true cost of all those hours of sunbathing. Not that skin cancer is confined to sunworshippers, it can occur in people who work outdoors or maybe enjoy outdoor pursuits. At the time of writing we are in consultation with Doncaster Royal Infirmary as to the kind of equipment they need. We will bring you more news of this as soon as we have the information. Good news! We hope to bring you the Memory Tree appeal back in December. As most of you know this is held in the Frenchgate Centre where you can purchase a Christmas tree ornament in memory of a loved one. This is exciting news for us as it will be the first time we have held a public fundraising event for 18 months. If you would like to get in touch with us our details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), second floor (lift available), Room 209. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. At last we seem to be moving forward and we really look forward to seeing you, our faithful supporters, and also new ones, in the coming months.

You will go to the ball!
When Hayfield school’s y11’s Summer 2021 Prom was cancelled, a couple of Mums got together to do their very best to make sure this special event would still go ahead. Sally Sleightholme, Claire Allcock and Andrea Sutcliffe took hold of the reigns and arranged for the prom to take place at Rossington Hall. Sally said ‘The kids have had a rough time so we didn’t want their school years to end without some sort of celebration. So with the support of the parents we managed to sort this Prom at Rossington Hall. They all really enjoyed themselves and were so appreciative.’
Lovely to see everyone had such a wonderful time, what amazing parents! Hope you enjoy some of these beautiful photos provided by Sally.

Auckley is all aglow with the recent opening of it’s very own tanning salon. Situated off Hayfield Lane, Glow Auckley is easy to find, next door but one to the ever popular Hub café. Owned by local business woman Laura Green, Glow Auckley is the first dedicated tanning salon in the area and will be great news for locals who are used to travelling further afield to find their glow. I asked Laura about her journey. ‘I originally had the idea for Glow around 7 years ago but was too busy on other projects to give the idea the time it needed. At the beginning of this year, the opportunity to take on the premises presented itself; I was aware there were no other tanning facilities in the immediate or surrounding areas so decided Auckley was the perfect location to bring my vision to reality. I knew I wanted to create the ‘Ultimate Indoor Tanning Experience’ with both UV Tanning Beds & an automated Spray Tan Booth, and my priority was to provide a warm and friendly welcome to all clients in line with our Good Vibes Only philosophy.’ The salon is managed by Lisa Stares who has a wealth of experience in the tanning industry and a fully trained team of tanning experts on hand to guide you through the use of their state-of-theart facilities and provide recommendations on tanning time & products most suitable for your skin type. Glow Auckley is equipped with a range of the highest quality horizontal and vertical Ergoline tanning beds AND also offers a fully automated Mystic Kyss spray tan facility to cater for all tanning requirements. So what are you waiting for, contact Glow Auckley and get your glow on.

Cantley Community Library celebrates re-opening and appointment of a new Chairman Following a complete deep clean of the library and some training days to get the volunteers back into the swing of things, Cantley Community Library will open its doors again on Monday 16th August. Initially, due to the retirement of some of its longer serving volunteers, it will operate the hours below. It is also celebrating the appointment of a new Chairman (Richard Halstead – pictured below) who takes over from Barrie Colledge. Commenting on his appointment Richard said: “I am excited to work with a committed and experienced group of volunteers and would like to thank Barrie for all the work he has done to lead the library into one of the best performing community libraries across DMBC. As a committee we have exciting plans to continue this improvement and are already looking at initial changes with investments in new chairs and a new carpet” Richard also added that one of the other priorities is the recruitment of new volunteers, he said that “Being a volunteer is much more than just supporting your local community, you join an immediate circle of like-minded friends, learn new skills and become a key part of the work we do to help improve education and create social inclusion.” So if you would like to enquire about becoming a volunteer then contact the library on cantleycommunitylibrary@gmail.com.
With a background in business, Richard is also looking to create strong relationships with local businesses, he commented “As a key focal point for the communities of Cantley, Auckley and Branton, we want to work with local businesses to help them raise their profile and grow together.” So, if you are a business that wants to get more involved in the local community then do contact Richard on richard.halstead@egs.live NEW OPENING TIMES FOR LIBRARY

Cantley with Branton Parish Council Litter pick The latest parish council litter pick took place on Saturday 24th July. The litter pick was attended by 11 volunteers who covered Branton and Old Cantley. There were approximately 20 bags of litter collected along with some stolen badges, medals and items which we were able to return to the owner who lived in Armthorpe and a lost key returned to another grateful owner. Thank you again to everyone who took part, we missed our usual group photo, but took a few snaps on the job! Look out for the next litter pick dates in next months Arrow and on the parish councils face book page, which should be around October time. We hope to branch further up the parish and cover the Manor farm area, so if there are any willing volunteers from Old Cantley or Manor farm area, please get in touch with the clerk cwbpc@outlook.com

We hope everyone had an amazing time at the Auckley Show, unfortunately, the Arrow was at print before the event, so we will have an update in the October issue. It has been lovely to see the pom poms and scarecrows scattered throughout the village of Auckley. Branton Author, Melanie (Mel) Hewitt, has had her first ever novel published by HarperCollins and after receiving some wonderful reviews, is available to order online at Amazon or to purchase from Waterstones in Frenchgate and other reputable book stores.
If you have any photograph's from the show, please feel free to send them to me for the October issue. michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk

The book is beautifully written as you would expect from Mel, and a wonderful escape, especially for those of us who long for a holiday on the mesmeric Greek island of Corfu. Congratulations Mel, looking forward to your next book.

POPPYFIELD’S SUMMER PARTY Residents of Poppyfields estate and their families celebrated the first ever summer party on the Poppyfield’s field in Branton in July. All residents were invited to attend and there was a brilliant turn out from people of all ages. The fun started at 2pm with games, tournaments, bingo, quizzes, music from Steve Love and DJ Tim and lots of dancing. Resident, Clive Rusher aka Bruce Forsyth, kept us all entertained with his wit and enthusiasm and kept us on track throughout the day. Congratulations to Mark Turner for a brilliant idea, to all the organisers who helped make it happen and the residents who contributed to the fun. We covered the costs via dentations from local residents and raised an additional £400 which will be donated to St John’s Hospice in Balby. Hope you enjoy a few of the many photographs taken on the day by our resident professional photographer, Pete Bird at Pets and Portraits www.pets-and-portraits.com
