Editors Letter...
July was a busy month for the villages with many summer fayres and fun days raising lots of money for good causes. Finningley Fun Day was a triumph with lots of fun activities organised for the villagers young and old! Hayfield Lane Primary School enjoyed their summer Gala raising lots of money for their Home and School Association. Branton St Wilfrids School and Community Fayre was a huge success raising over £2000 towards PTA funds for sports equipment and computers in school as well as many other community groups raising money for their own causes. Luckily, the sun shone brightly for all of these events. As we all know, August means one thing around here—The Auckley Show, Saturday 14th August, which promises to be an even bigger and better event than last year. To see this year‘s schedule go to the centre page. Don‘t miss ‘The Auckley Show‘s Got Talent‘ show on Friday 13th, 6.30pm till 9pm. Best Wishes to all of the organisers of this Show, the time and effort that goes into a show of this size is tremendous, not to mention the stress of predicting the weather! Let‘s all hope the sun shines brightly for The 2010 Auckley Show! The deadline for the September issue is Friday 13th August 2010.

Prom Night At Hayfield
L to R: Emily Shephard, Rebecca Walters, Jenni Hanford, Jennifer Robson and Lucy Chadwick
Friday 25th June was Prom Night at The Hayfield School and what a fabulous night it was, the weather was great with not a rain cloud in sight! Dr Patel greeted everyone as they arrived with a handshake and a smile. Once again, everyone turned up looking amazing. Some of the beautiful ladies in the photograph above, Emily, Rebecca and Jennifer, were dressed by Local business woman, Carolyn Poole‘s Designer boutique ‘Chique‘. To the left is a photograph with Lucy Warnock who wrote Kids Corner and later Teen Page for the Arrow. Many turned up in true style, including the boys below who arrived in a boat! Everyone had a super time and danced the night away.

Auckley Junior & Infant school receive a ‘Groundforce’ style makeover!
If you go down in the woods today you are certainly in for a big surprise just without a teddy bear‘s picnic in sight! Auckley Junior and Infant School recently received a ground force style makeover of their woods and wildlife area by environmental charity BTCV via one of their Employee Action Days. This involved a dedicated team of volunteers from RBS being taught by BTCV leaders a number of conservation skills. In just one day in June the team repaired fences, built 65m of rustic footpath, installed three benches and cut back and cleared the existing wildlife area before seeding 35m2 of brand new wildflower meadow with a native seed mix. The team were also greatly assisted by volunteers from Hayfield Social Education Centre and around 60 of the schools pupils that got special permission to come out of lessons and look at what was going on!
John Thompson – Senior Field Project Officer for BTCV said ‗It‘s been a fantastic day! Everyone has worked so hard and a big thank you goes out to all the RBS, BTCV, Hayfield Social Education Centre and school pupils and staff that have made this happen. It is such a great feeling to receive all the great feedback from everyone and we were made to feel very welcome.‘ BTCV Employee Action Days allow corporate volunteers to bond as a team whilst carrying out positive environmental action for the benefit of local communities. BTCV also work in school grounds across South Yorkshire carrying out a range of environmental projects to benefit the sites. For more information on either of the above contact John Thompson, Senior Field Project Officer on 0114 290 1255 or email j.thompson@btcv.org.uk

Finningley Fun Day Well the day finally arrived for ―Finningley Fun Day‖ and we were blessed with a very beautiful day. We hope that everyone enjoyed it and feels that it should be the start of similar events for the future. The included photographs will illustrate better than words what a good day we had and what a good time was had by all. However we could not go to press without saying a VERY BIG THANK YOU. We'd like to thank all those who, provided prizes for the raffle or donations to the funding, Finningley Parish Council, Yorkshire Aggregates, The Ramada Hotel, Doncaster Rovers, Mrs Pam Robinson, Marks and Spencer, Walkers Nursery, The Body Shop, Lafarge Aggregates and Concrete U.K., Asda Super Store, Richard Johnson, Morrisons and Tesco's, not forgetting all those anonymous donors. Our thanks go out to the many groups that meet in the Village Hall, providing social and interest based activities for residents, who responded so wonderfully to the call to get involved,to Trevor James who kindly collected and returned the ―market stalls‖ and of course to all the visiting contributors. The community group received 10% of the monies that the participating groups raised to form the basis of next years event fund while the remaining 90% went to the groups for their funds. We want to recognise and thank all those individuals, too many to mention by name, who were prepared to ―Get stuck in‖ to produce something for the community. Finally we must thank all of you who came and helped to make the day a success. Mureen Marson and Cynthia Scully, Joint Chair. Finningley Village Community Group.
Winners!! Both our crafters were thoughtful in their choice and use of materials, and took great care to make their cards attractive and suitable for the occasion. Haleema made her card for her younger sister's first birthday and Mathew's card was for his grandparent‘s anniversary. The judges were impressed by both cards, the symmetry and precision of Haleema's and the elegance and effective simplicity of Mathew‘s despite a cornucopia of craft materials on the table. Well done to our winning crafters, who each received a prize, and thanks to all the young crafters who took part. Perhaps next time the adults will have a go! Raffle prize still to be collected raffle ticket No. 136—clarke

After many months of careful and dedicated planning by our wonderful Parent Teacher Association we were fortunate to have lovely weather for our Summer Fayre on Saturday 10th July. We had many exciting activities for children and families to take part in including archery, the BSM Driving School, instructors enabled children to drive cars on the school playground and Doncaster Play Rangers provided games and activities for younger children. Children enjoyed taking turns on the bouncy castle and slide and older brothers and sisters had fun in the blow up sumo suits –lots of wrestling, but no possibility of getting hurt!

After a loud count down we held our balloon launch. Each balloon purchased has a ticket attached, asking whoever finds a balloon to return the ticket to school. A prize will be given to the person whose balloon travels the furthest. Our balloons are biodegradable so we are not damaging the environment. We had a huge range of stalls including tombola, raffle, face painting, a very inviting cake stall, garden plants and the list goes on! Our barbecue saw very brisk business, as did our drink stalls and doughnut van. Our Summer Fayre was a real community event, with many local providers and services contributing to the occasion. Our local community police offers came to share with visitors what work they are undertaking in the local area and brought a police car for children to sit in. Children enjoyed climbing onto the fire engine and staff from South Yorkshire‟s Pet Ambulance came to raise awareness about their work. Members of our local St John‟s Ambulance group gave out first aid information and demonstrated some potential life saving skills. We had some wonderful performances in our arena from Dance Shack, a local dance group, Premier Martial Arts taekwondo group, lovely singing from our own Jubilate Club and a tent building competition led by Duke of Edinburgh Award volunteers. Hayfield Children‟s Centre came to share information about the many services they provide and Hall Cross Secondary School provided an exciting interactive Science workshop for children. Our local Parish Council, Kilham Hall management committee, Rural Lions and St Wilfrid‟s Church all supported our event. Thank you so much to our hardworking and enthusiastic PTA, and all children and families who supported our Summer Fayre. We raised just over £2,000 which is going towards new computers and gym equipment for the children. Best Wishes E A Crayton, Head teacher

If any resident feels strongly about a reduction in the speed limit and wishes to write to the Mayor or Member of Parliament, you may send your letter or e-mail to the Clerk who will forward it on. Auckley Show – The show will again be held at the Riverside Park on Saturday, 14 th August 2010. This is a very important event for the community, and hopefully everyone will give it their support. Flowers for Someone Special On behalf of all the children and staff at Branton St Wilfrid‟s C.E. Primary School we would like to nominate Mrs Helen Barlow, one of our valued midday supervisors, to receive a special bouquet of flowers from the „Arrow‟ magazine. After 19 years of dedicated service at our school, looking after children during their lunchtime meal and encouraging and supervising play at lunchtime, Mrs Barlow is retiring. I would say that Mrs Barlow will now be able to have a well deserved rest, but as she is a talented gardener and flower arranger and has a beautiful new granddaughter, she will probably be busier than ever! We would like to thank Mrs Barlow for all her work and care for our children over many years and hope she enjoys her special „Arrow‟ flowers.
The Arrow and Petalsflorist would love to send someone special a bouquet. Also, listen to Trax FM to hear ‗Someone Special‘ in the morning!

Branton Football Success Branton Juniors Under 11's put the icing on a fantastic season when they received the Peel Holdings Trophy, presented by the owners of Robin Hood Airport to Branton Juniors Football Club, for the best performance by an individual or team within the club. The massive trophy was the teams third major success of the 2009/10 season, adding to the Doncaster Junior Football League - Under 11's Division 2 trophy and the Babworth Tournament trophy, which they won for the second successive season. The team managed by Keith Watkin and Darren Sides is made up almost entirely of local boys and girls from the Branton, Auckley and Finningley area, and has been together since they were under 7's. Last season was their first season in 11-a-side football , and they adapted superbly to the move up from small sided football by becoming the only unbeaten team in the three Under 11 divisions in the Doncaster Junior League . The team won 12 and drew 4 of their 16 League games scoring 76 goals and only conceding 16, to win the league by six points. Despite the teams success, we are always on the lookout for new players, and we are especially in need of a new goalkeeper for the forthcoming season. So any budding keepers or talented footballers in school year 7 from September interested in joining the team, please contact Keith on 773158 for more details. The team is pictured above with their trophies at the recent Branton Juniors Presentation Day.

News from Branton St Wilfrid’s C.E. Primary School
It has been a very busy end to the Summer term. We seem to have been very lucky with the weather, as it has been sunny and warm for both our Sports Days and our Summer Fayre. Please find below some of the activities we have been involved in towards the end of the Summer term. Year 6 Team at the County Finals Our fantastic Year 6 Rounders team have been to Barnsley to represent our school, the pyramid and Doncaster in the South Yorkshire final after impressive performances in previous
competitions. The team played well, showed good sporting behaviour and represented our school brilliantly. Unfortunately we narrowly missed going through to the semi-finals of the competition. I am, however, incredibly proud of their achievement in reaching a County Final and we can say without doubt that we are one of the top eight schools in the county! Well done to Daniel, Joshua, Aimee, Libbie, Courtney, Emma, Ellie, Toni, Brandon, Calum M and Leah. Thanks again to parents who helped with transport and to Mrs Roberts and Mrs Reasbeck for coaching the team at Rounders Club. Mrs Neville, PE subject leader Technology Challenge Success On Tuesday 6th July, ten Year 6 children represented our school in the Technology Challenge Final at Hayfield Secondary School, where they competed against groups from other local schools. This competition allows the children to design and make a product with a “real” purpose as each year we are partnered with a different business/company. This year we were partnered with Northern Racing College, and we were set the challenge of designing and making a model horse lorry to carry six horses. The challenge posed us with many difficulties, but the children worked exceptionally hard in their groups and made some fantastic models! They also had to design a range of marketing materials to promote their product, and at the final they gave a wonderful presentation to the judges to encourage them to appreciate all the design features of their models. The children all thoroughly enjoyed the challenge, and at the final event represented our school with enthusiasm. Very well done to all the finalists!

Art Club visit to Burghley House
On Friday June 18th the Art Club ( a group of Year 3 and Year 4 children) set off to visit Burghley House. Not to visit the House as fantastic as it is but to visit the Sculpture Park. Not only to visit the Sculpture Park but to have the chance to do some sculpture ourselves as we were going to have a Sculpture Workshop. The aim being that art comes in all different forms.
We had a brilliant day. The children worked well in the Sculpture Workshop and were totally absorbed in the activity – paper sculpture to cover their own boxes. The tutor there was very impressed with their work and their ideas. After that we had lunch and then walked round the Sculpture Park – the children were fascinated with the different displays and they did their own sketching. On the way back one of the children asked “Can we go again?”

Doncaster DIAL Visit In July we had two visits from Doncaster‟s DIAL group (Disability Advisory Group). Mr Burke led a whole school assembly to help further children‟s understanding of a range of disabilities. After this Class 6 enjoyed different workshop sessions. As you can see from the photos these included trying to manoeuvre your way round the school in a wheelchair, blindfold games to help children consider the impact of having no sight, sessions using Braille and sign language and looking at a range of aids that help people with a disability manage different household tasks. Class 6 learned a lot from their workshop morning and would like to thank members of DIAL for their time. We hope you also enjoy reading our article about our Summer Fayre. Best Wishes E.A. News from Hayfield Lane Primary School Summer Gala The sun shone brightly over our Summer Gala on Saturday. Hundreds of people filled the school playground to enjoy the day. With help from the South Yorkshire fire Service, the children had great fun trying out the equipment. The police brought along their Squad car as well as the police dogs and handler.
People were entertained with martial arts displays from Lynx blackbelt leadership Acadamy, Reach for the Stars School of Dance and Chungma Taekwondo group. The Doncaster Rovers Community coaches took on some of the children in a penalty shoot out challenge and showed them some fantastic ball skills. Lots of people tried their luck at the coconut shy, bursting balloons to win a prize and our ever popular wine and water game as well as visiting the many stalls selling clothes, jewellery, books and our gardening club had a variety of plants for sale that they had grown themselves. All in all a great day with our Home and School Association raising a massive £800.00. A big thank you to all who supported this event and helped to make it a big success.

Year 4 visit to Keepmoat Stadium
Our year 4 children recently had the opportunity to visit the Keepmoat Stadium to take part in a mini Olympic games tournament. They were representing Italy and made tshirts, hats and had their faces painted with the Italian flag beforehand. They took part in a variety of activities including tag rugby, Frisbee, taekwondo and dance. At the end of the day, all the children were presented with a certificate of their achievement. End of Term As our year 6 children prepare to move on to their secondary schools they entertained parents, teacher and the rest of the school with their leavers concert. Their theme was a comical look at key moments throughout the year including the reality of school trips with the sick bucket and obsessive head counting. The audience found the year 6 take on the key stage 1 nativity particularly amusing if not cringe worthy. Our year 6 children have worked extremely hard this year and we are incredibly proud of them. We would like to wish them the best of luck as they embark on their exciting new journey. Our school has had an active and fulfilling year. We would like to wish everyone a happy summer holiday and we look forward to reporting on future successes in September. Contributed by Polly Atkinson - Parent Governor and Leanne Fox - Parent

News from Auckley School The summer term is speeding by and as usual it is a hive of activity at Auckley School. Year 6 pupils are of course looking forward to transition to ―big school‖ and preparing themselves for their departure. We of course will need plenty of tissues for the occasion. Home and Away. The children in year 6 have been involved in an amazing project with ―creative partnerships‖ where they have contrasted the community of Auckley with the culture of Senegal in Africa. Banners have been made which reflect Auckley community and a Senegalese community. Wider issues have been the focus of this study. The children have for example, looked at why fair trade is important for the global community and investigated the notion of human rights. The banners made are on display for all to see and reflect the ideas that were considered by the children. A celebration event took place where all members of the community were invited to try their hand at some of the textile techniques studied during the project. It was a huge success and the finished works are amazing. The Deep. There‘s something fishy at Auckley School Year 1 and 2 children recently enjoyed a trip to ― The Deep‖ Children looked at an underwater sea world, worked on computer soft ware and enjoyed the Amazing aquarium. They have since created some fabulous 3D fish in school – so watch out for the sharks if you visit. Harry Potter Book Launch. Auckley School creative writing group have been putting pen to paper to write their own amazing ―Harry Potter‖ style novel. My spies tell me that the book is about ready to launch and all are invited to come to the book signing. Copies of the book will be for sale at school during a ―Harry Potter‖ style evening- Visitors will be placed in an appropriate team by the ―sorting hat‖ and a ―Hogwarts style‖ buffet will be laid on especially for the event. Sports day. An amazing sports day was had by all at Auckley School. Children marched down to the field in a blaze of colour in their school teams accompanied by a celebratory drum beat. Doncaster Knights came along to encourage the children and entertain the crowds and hosts of people helped organise Olympic style activities for the children. My thanks to all who helped make it a very special event. Have a lovely Summer ! Maggie Evans , Head teacher.

Doncaster Advanced Motorists
Taking your Test Dear Readers continued, Mr Bean was the first person to pass the driving test in 1935… fact! But it‘s not that Mr Bean, it was Mr J Beene who paid a grand total of 37p (7d / 6p in old money) to take the test. there were no test centres in 1935 so you had to arrange to meet the examiner somewhere like a post office, train station or town hall. the test was suspended for the duration of World War Two and didn‘t resume until 1 November 1946. In 1975, candidates no longer had to demonstrate hand signals The theory test was introduced in 1996, replacing questions about the Highway Code, during the practical test candidates could book their theory test online for the first time in December 2001 the pass rate in 1935 was 63 per cent compared to 46 per cent in 2009. 1969 saw the first driving test set for an automatic vehicle since 1935 more than 46 million tests have been taken In 1935, when Leslie Hore-Belisha, became the new Transport Minister, he introduced the driving test – first in March as a voluntary test and then it became compulsory in June. During the 1930s safety glass was made compulsory for windscreens after terrible injuries had been caused by accidents in cars with ordinary glass. Seat belts did not appear until the 1950s but were not made compulsory in front seats until 1983. in September 2003. Arm signals out of the window were withdrawn from the test in 1975 and more modern additions to the test have included a theory test in 1996, the hazard perception section of the theory test in 2002 and questions about vehicle safety and maintenance Changes to the test and other safety initiatives, such as improvements to vehicles, have resulted in a reduction in road deaths in Great Britain, which now has some of the best road safety records in the world. In 2008 there were 34 million cars on the road and 2,538 people were killed in road accidents When announcing the introduction of the driving test, Leslie Hore-Belisha said, ―Driving is an art in which those who are engaged should, in the interest of their own and of the public‘s safety; take the greatest pains to make themselves proficient.‖ If you are interested in further information regarding the courses that we offer, you‘ll be able to find this information on the Institute of Advanced Motorists website at www.iam.org.uk or Tel: 020 8996 9600 Safe Driving. Saved Your Bacon The other week I told the following story in church… A traveller was driving through Yorkshire when he lost his way and got off the main road. As he drove by, he saw rows and rows of pigsties. There were pigs running in fields and others wallowing in the mud. Suddenly, his eye caught something really strange. He did a double take, muttered to himself, nearly crashed the car, and looked a third time. He wondered if he had seen correctly - it looked like a pig with a wooden leg! He found the lane to the farm and drove up into the farmyard, where he was met by the farmer. “Excuse me,” the traveller said. “I was just driving by and looking at all your pigs, and I noticed something that I just had to stop and ask about. Tell me, did I see right? Is there really a pig out there with a wooden leg?” The farmer smiled. “Oh, that would be old Caesar you saw. He's the finest pig a man could ever hope to have - and smart!” “Let me tell you a little about that pig. You see that boat down there on the river? That's a mining dredge, taking out gold ore. Old Caesar sniffed out the vein and showed us how to set it up. Now that dredge brings me in about £500,000 every year.” “There's another thing, too, a little more personal. One night, a couple of years ago, I was drinking and I perhaps had more than I should have. I passed out drunk, fell down and knocked over a lamp. That started a fire in the house and old Caesar smelled the smoke. He came in the back door, got my wife and kids out, then woke me up and got me out. There is no question about it - that night old Caesar saved all our lives and you know that is not the sort of thing a man is going to forget too easily.” “Wow,” the traveller said, “this is all amazing! I have never heard of a pig like this before! This is fantastic! But tell me, how did he get that wooden leg? Was he in an accident or something?” The farmer laughed and said, "Well, naturally, when you have a pig that smart, you don't want to eat him all at once!" Why tell that story in Church – seriously, come along and find out! Perhaps you thought being a Christian and church was dull, well God gave us laughter and encourages joy. Sarah said, "God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me." Genesis 21:6 Enjoy the summer, laugh and be joyful. Blessings Revd.
