HAPPY EASTER! I will never forget the Easter Sunday many years ago (not in the Isle) when a young person ate too much chocolate before our Church Service and was very sick just as the intercessions were starting! It was not pleasant. Easter is about much more than chocolate or eggs. For many people, Christmas is the most important Festival of the year. After all, we decorate our houses and buy presents fort our family and friends. However in the Christian Church, Easter is just as important as Christmas. Indeed, whenever we celebrate Holy Communion, we remember the death and resurrection of Jesus, not least on Christmas Day. Christmas without Easter is impossible! Easter is so important, we celebrate for the seven Sundays following until Pentecost. You will be very welcome at any Church or Chapel near you. Photography Competition Here is just a small selection of photographs for our annual Photography Competition which is now in its fourth year and once again we were not disappointed with the entries we received. We have four different categories each with a winner & runner-up prize. The categories are: Key Stage 3 students (Years 7, 8 & 9) Key Stage 4 students (Years 10 & 11) Staff Community For the second year running we were lucky enough to have some local photography companies supporting the competition. Tom Dennis Imaging, Laneham Street, Scunthorpe kindly donated 4 20"x30" canvas prints (worth £80 each) for the winners & 4 –20"x16" prints (worth £40 each) for the runners-up. Max Spielmann, High Street, Scunthorpe also supported us by donating 8 -10” x 8” canvasses. We have also been fortunate to have The Axholme Camera Club supporting the competition by providing two workshops after school. Simon Knight took the first workshop ‘Practical Photography’ – Understanding your camera and Allan Rowsell took the second workshop ‘Using photoshop to improve your images’. Judges: Mr Allan Rowsell (The Axholme Camera Club) Miss Hayley Drayton (Media Arts Technician) Mrs A Cox (Media Arts Project Co-ordinator) Visit our website to see all the entries www.theaxholmeacademy.com Mrs Cox (Media Arts Project Co-ordinator) would just like to thank everyone that took part, the standard was very high and the judging proved very difficult. I look forward to receiving even more entries next year.

On a cold unseasonal evening almost the whole membership of the Epworth and District Flower Club met in
the Stephen Jones Community Hall in Haxey to welcome Sarah Atwell, a local flower arranging demonstrator for a workshop session. The title of the arrangement was “Spring” and Sarah demonstrated how to carefully cover an Oasis ring with blocks of various foliage creating an interesting effect with different textures, colours and perfumes. Into the ring she added dainty silk daffodils, medolino sticks depicting bufferflies and flowers, tiny Easter bonnets, wire balls and Easter eggs on sticks. Sarah suggested other additions we could use such as expandable wire, a candle or a mesh rabbit to be placed in the centre of the ring. She also showed us the ring made into a wreath to hang. To this she had added a lovely yellow ribbon. Then Sarah handed over the task to the group. She provided most of the necessary materials in decorative bags with a choice of colour for the flowers and butterflies, one for every member, some further foliage to supplement what everyone had taken and we set about work. For an hour there was a happy, productive atmosphere and finally 22 variations of a spring decoration or a wreath were to be seen. Everyone agreed with Jane Copas, who gave the vote of thanks, expressing how well prepared Sarah had been and how she had introduced some variety into creating an unusual Easter arrangement which everyone was capable of producing and reminding us that Spring weather should soon arrive. There was an appreciative atmosphere as the raffle was drawn. Sarah had donated the door wreath she had prepared and a rabbit made of natural materials which supplemented the prizes of primroses and bulbs. It was agreed that the meal at Hatties which had been postponed in January because of bad weather, should be held on Monday, 22nd April. The next meeting will be at the same venue on Monday, 8 th April at 7.30.pm and the demonstrator will be Heather Shaw who will create “With a European Touch”. As usual new members and visitors will be welcomed. Celia Jones 01427 874042

Althorpe and Keadby Primary School Joins in the Fight to Highlight the Problem of World Hunger As part of our Global Week studies, we have been working on an Oxfam project which considers the problem of World Hunger. Did you know? 2 million people die each year from hunger, even though the world does produce enough food to feed everyone. And 2 million school children in the UK are overweight . We have made kites with ‘Stop Hunger’ messages on them and we plan to send photos of them to Oxfam. Oxfam will use our photos as part of their project, which will be shared at the G8 Summit later this year!

Aliens Crash Land at Eastoft! During alien week we have all had great fun! Some of the activities which the children have participated in have included a treasure hunt, building aliens, firing rockets and making obstacle courses. The children have been reporting on activities which have been taking place in different classrooms. We hope you enjoy reading the reports. The dull, windy weather of Monday 25th February certainly didn't stop Foundation and KS1 having fun! I witnessed them happily hunt for the aliens and their possessions. All of them had a great time. About 30 minutes later, KS1 worked together to build 2 very unique aliens with boxes and other items they found when searching. Mrs Harrison had a fabulous time too! “This is super! I'd definitely do this again soon, explained a Y2 pupil. Both foundation and Y1/2 agree that Monday's events were wonderful! On Monday morning I reported on Y5 & 6 activities. They were investigating the crash scene, looking at the clues to decide what had happened. They found an alien egg, a glove, a boot, blood, a head, a mask and footprints. The children made sketches of the evidence. Two local policemen came to help the children and then talked to them about the crash and how to write a report.
On Monday afternoon Y1 & 2 were finding out how the aliens got to Eastoft school. Mrs Hewson handed out packets of tiny aliens with a parachute. All the children were excited when told they can take them home and fly them to see how they land. They were in the tent on the field, 13 children and aliens eager to begin their parachute journey. Mrs Hewson and Mrs Beasley assisted and asked the children what the aliens would see and how they would feel. Most children said they would land with a bump and a swirl. On Wednesday morning we watched Y5 & 6, they were firing rockets. They had been set a challenge by Alien X to help him get back to his planet. The foam rockets were going really high in the sky. The children had lots of fun, Kai and Gracie said they loved it. Later the children made their own rockets using drink bottles, they decorated them using tissue paper, foam, pipe cleaners, and small pieces of fabric. They then tried to fly these rockets, they flew a little way. The rockets look very good. I enjoyed flying the rockets, and building my own. This was lots of fun because you got to jump on the pump, and when they went in the air you had to catch them. Riley Year 5. On Tuesday morning I reported on the year 4s who were baking. They were making big cakes to sell at the fair on Friday. During this activity they had to listen carefully to each other. They also needed to use teamwork, and careful measuring skills. They folded the mixture in the bowl to keep in the air. After they had finished making the cakes they helped Mrs Parkin wash up. They had a great time making the cakes. Robbie said he had fun.

On Tuesday afternoon the year 3 and 4 children were building an alien obstacle course. They were using space hoppers in their obstacle course it looked like lots of fun! For the obstacle course, you had to sit on a space hopper, then put the hoop over your head. Next you had to use the space hopper to bounce in the shape of an S. They were also throwing javelins, and then used the space hoppers to bounce in a Z shape. The space hoppers were hard for some people to use, but some people found it easy. The children said they were having lots of 532676 fun, and enjoying themselves. call 01302 or 07912 643010 19 Reported by Jack Palmer and Thomas Rayment.

Student Newspaper Over the past few weeks, 20 students from Years 7 & 8 have been busy preparing articles for our school newspaper called the ‘AX NEWS’. This culminated in the students interviewing students and staff on various items such as news, sport and entertainment and then on Monday 28th January, Lincoln University journalism lecturers came to The Axholme Academy and spent a full day helping our students in bringing all their articles together to produce the ‘AX NEWS’. Academy Principal, Joe Sellars, said ‘we have produced our newspaper working with Lincoln University for 4 years and each has been even better than the ones before and we expect the spring edition to keep up this high standard. Our students put in an awful lot of preparatory work before the full day with the university and this ensures that we produce a great read. An entirely new set of young reporters have worked on this paper and their enthusiasm and dedication has been exceptional.’ Copies of the newspaper have been distributed to students, parents & members of the community. It is also be available on our school website www.theaxholmeacademy.com
