We have moved on a further month and we can now see light at the end of the tunnel with regards to the restrictions we have been under, on and off for a year now! WOW, who would have thought we
would have had a 2nd Mothers’ Day under lock down? It is great news that the Prime Minister (and our is giving us hope for travel this Summer !
Lots of people are booking UK breaks away for their family but to others they still want to get away further afield to the Mediterranean sun and beyond. I would personally await booking this summer until we know where and when we can travel too and to some this may mean a vaccine or a COVID19 test pre travelling. We will not know the finer details until May and travel operators and agents are likely to be inundated with bookings at that point. I am not sure when we will see restrictions lifted for travel to the USA, New Zealand or Australia, this may still be some time until we can safely travel there. In the mean time, there is a huge shift in holiday types, many people opting for a more expensive holiday further afield, given their 2020 and 2021 spending for holidays has merged into a larger amount. Clients are also booking more adventure and touring style holidays, getting the best of both worlds with being immersed in the culture of Thailand, Cambodia, Borneo and South Africa being top sellers and enjoying a beach/relax break within this. Remember to book with an agent who is a member of ABTA and packages that are ATOL bonded. Do your research with FDCO in advance on the destination you have in mind and above all make sure you have adequate insurance in place. Please do head to my page on Facebook www.facebook.com/luanthornhillathaystravel and if you would like any ideas. I have plenty of holidays on my page or get in touch with me and I can put something together for you.

Welcome to the April issue of the Crowle and Ealand Arrow. As Spring arrives and the days get longer there are plenty of reasons to be happy! After being couped up indoors for months we are able to get outside more. The first phase of England’s roadmap out of lockdown got underway on 8th March, as pupils returned to the classroom and care homes began allowing visitors once more. Hopefully in April non-essential retail, hairdressers and barbers will reopen, as will gyms, zoos, theme parks, community centres and self contained holiday accommodation. I don’t know about you but I'm in desperate need of an appointment at my hairdressers. I have resisted temptation into the DIY dye job and the at-home hair transformation. The deadline for the May issue is Wednesday 14th April for delivery by Sunday 2nd May. Enjoy the read and keep safe!

Pathfinders .....
Walks on the footpaths & Byways on The Isle and Doncaster Since we started last August we’ve had more than 40 outings. Our walks, usually 4-6 miles, takes the group all over the Isle and sometimes further afield. The routes are varied, taking us through woodlands and forests, on canals and the peat moors and on farmland tracks (a few really muddy bits too) getting to places some of us didn’t know existed!
Now the lockdown is beginning to relax we can get out again ..... there are so many routes to explore and we try not to repeat a previous walk. During April & May our walks will take us to: Misterton, Garthorpe, Austerfield, Hatfield, Auckley, Crowle Moors, Epworth and Haxey and maybe to the other side of the Trent too . Come and join us ! Maybe discover parts of the Isle and Doncaster you didn’t know about. You don’t need to be super fit, just be able and properly dressed for a brisk countryside walk. isle.pathfinders@gmail.com and we’re on Facebook too.

Rescue Day 2021 – CANCELLED It is with regret that Rescue Day 2021, which was due to be held on Saturday 10th July at 7 Lakes Country Park, Crowle has been cancelled, despite the government’s four-step roadmap to ease restrictions across England and provide a route back to a more normal way of life. Stage four, which allows the return of larger events, is due to take place no earlier than the 21st June 2021. Several of our organisers are employed by our emergency and health services and along with our stakeholders, who support the planning and delivery of Rescue Day, remain under extreme pressure at this time, therefore regrettably a joint decision has been taken to cancel this year’s event. Chris Long, Chair of the Rescue Day Society, said “The team and I are hugely disappointed that we will not be able to bring Rescue Day to you again this year. Cancelling the event is one of the hardest decisions to make, however it has been a tough year for all of those involved with the event. We wish to thank our hosts 7 Lakes Country Park and all our organisers, officials, volunteers, exhibitors and their families for their continued support during these unprecedented times.” Rescue Day remains committed to promoting the great work of our emergency and voluntary services, raising money for charities and good causes, it has funded many lifesaving public defibrillators and equipment which have been placed in local communities. We know our visitors and exhibitors will be sad to hear that this year’s event has been cancelled once again, however we are pleased to let you know that Rescue Day will hopefully return next year on Saturday 9th July 2022 and we look forward to welcoming you all back very soon. Please keep an eye on our website rescueday999.com and social media accounts facebook.com/rescuedayuk/ and twitter.com/Rescue_Day for more information.

Crowle Peatland Railway - It's full steam ahead! Because of the COVID lockdown, Crowle Peatland Railway has, like many other organisations, had to stop much of the work that we were doing. Now with the government announcement of its roadmap to ease lockdown restrictions, we are now able to start to put in place our plans for reopening the Crowle Peatland Railway site and to plan the official opening. We will also be able to start work on the railway extension for which planning permission was granted last year. After an official opening, we will be holding public open days on Saturday 1st May and Sunday 2nd May with appropriate Covid secure precautions in place. This will be an opportunity not only to see how we are getting on but to visit our cafe which we hope will be open on a regular basis, not only for those visiting the railway but also visitors to the moors and those who need to get out of the house! The recently installed decking provides a great area to sit outside sipping coffee and taking in your surroundings. We are always looking for new members so it will also be an opportunity for you to see how you can volunteer! Note that if the dates around the government roadmap change then our dates will inevitably have to change too.

Crowle and Ealand Garden Club Grows New Shoots Crowle and Ealand Garden Club has been in existence for nearly twenty years and has over a hundred members. In common with many groups and organisations, its programme of activities came to an abrupt halt in March 2020 but gardening didn’t..... In fact, it flourished. We were blessed with magnificent weather in the spring of 2002 and many new gardeners blossomed into existence. Seed companies had to close down their on line checkouts because they were inundated with orders, plant nurseries sold out, garden centres found new outlets for selling their bedding plants as they weren’t allowed to be open, potting compost and plant pots couldn’t be got for love nor money. While the coronavirus was threatening us, our health and wellbeing was being improved by being out in the fresh ait, close to nature – all having an impact on our physical and mental health. Although infection rates start to drop, restrictions on what we do will still be in place for some time. Many of you will be tired of being restricted in your movements and will be looking for some distraction as spring approaches. To quote from Monty Don who speaks from personal experience: “..gardening helps heal many physical and mental ills. When you are sad, a garden comforts. When you are humiliated or defeated, a garden consoles. When you are consumed by anxiety, it will soothe you, and when the world is a dark and bleak place, it shines a light to guide you on.” Over the past few years, the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Science Team has been looking at the impact of plants, gardens and gardening on the environment and on human health. The health and wellbeing benefits of creating a calm, tranquil, outdoor space have been amply proven. The peace and greenery of a garden for relaxing and unwinding is especially important for those of us with mental health issues. Most importantly, as we emerge from the pandemic and start to face the next great threat of climate change, gardens can help to protect and shield us from air pollution and allergens and filtering or masking intrusive noise. The RHS have discovered a new vitamin – Vitamin G (Green) – one that you can’t overdose on! A study carried out as long ago as 1991 showed that exposure to Green brings many benefits – lowering stress and anxiety, improving mood and lowering blood pressure and heart rate. Other research shows that being in nature is mentally restorative and allows us to focus better. Here’s some ways you can boost your Vitamin G levels: plan your living areas so that you have a view of green space from workspaces such as the kitchen or your desk and from seating areas; plant up a window box or grow herbs in a sunny window sill to brighten up your view use houseplants to bring the outside in. Getting Out If you have a garden or balcony, put plants in containers and locate garden seating in sheltered spots to view plants all year round If you have space, use the garden or balcony as an outside seating area, or take a picnic to the park

stroll around your garden or do some gardening to combine a dose of Vitamin G with exercise if possible, walk through a park on the way home from school, work or the shops Go for a walk or bike ride in the countryside. We will be lucky to get as good a spring as last year but whatever, we want to encourage people to rekindle that enthusiasm for gardening that they got last year and come and join the Garden Club. Martin Ayres, our longstanding chair, has stood down and now enjoying a well earned retirement. He is replaced by Ann Hindley, and Cath Groome the treasurer is being replaced by David Wright. We can’t hold our normal programme of talks and slide shows, quizzes and garden visits but we welcome new members to visit members’ plant stalls in their driveways on Saturday 8th May, to take part in paper based quizzes (with prizes!) and to become involved in an open garden trail (for members only) and we hope a walking treasure hunt some time over the summer. Watch the local press, social media and for posters around Crowle to keep you up to date but we would urge you to join us. Membership costs £4 per household and £3 per individual which is very good value for money. We have potting compost available to members at £5 per hag, held at that price for this year, and there are opportunities to join with others who love gardening. Look out for the next edition and how to get growing in a small space! If you would like to join, pick up a membership from Claire’s newsagent in the Market Place or Ealand Post Office or contact Brenda on 710860 brenda.chester100@googlemail.com or Ann on 712337 or crowleandealandgardenclub78@gmail.com.
The Isle Choral Singers In line with other organisations The Isle Choral Singers have not been able to have rehearsals since Covid lockdown in March 2020 but as a registered charity the Trustees are required to maintain regular contact with members and file the annual Charity Commissioners return. So on 1st March 2021 a Zoom Annual General Meeting was held and, although participants were few, there were more than adequate for a quorum. The meeting was opened by Chairman, Tony Flinn, who welcomed everyone and apologies were duly noted by Minute Secretary, Rev. Angy Long. In his report treasurer, Dr. John Lambert, advised that the group were still managing to keep “our heads above the water” in spite of the restrictions over the past year but we will definitely need to hold some fund raising events once we can resume meeting again. Mention was made of the grant aid from Epworth Town Council for £250 towards music scores, which is ring fenced for the time being. Musical Director, Robert Fields, expressed his hope that we would be able to have a Christmas concert this year with some Christmas music and carols. The Vivaldi’s “Gloria” would be performed at Easter 2022, but no firm plans can be made meantime. The current committee and trustees were all willing to serve for the coming year and so with unanimous agreement were duly elected. Members are looking forward to when we will able to meet and all agreed that, once it is permitted for choirs to sing inside, an invitation will be circulated to members [along anyone else interested in joining us] to hold rehearsals over the summer period when we normally have a break. The annual members’ Summer Meal was felt to be something to look forward to. Obviously it is not possible to make any firm commitments on future concerts etc. at this time – so please…………….. Spring brings new beginnings
Known as the season of new life with blooms of fresh buds and re-emerging of beautiful colours, spring is an important time to take care of your lawn. We’re here to share our expert advice and help your lawn reach its full potential as the centrepiece of your garden. Preparing to spend more time in your garden requires little effort, but the results can be a gorgeous green space to be proud of. With over 30 years’ experience in Lawn Care, we can help you get the very best from your lawn over the spring months and prepare it for the transition into summer. Now winter has passed, the amount of mowing required will naturally increase. We recommend implementing a regular mowing programme, ensuring that mower blades are kept sharp or replaced when needed to avoid causing damage to the grass plant. If possible, it is best for a lawn to be cut at least once a week, to about 25mm (1"). A little maintenance in the form of consistent mowing will help train the grass to be stronger over time. Another useful way to help a lawn through spring is to rake up any dead leaves and twigs and to also cut back overhanging shrubs and plants; this is because grass needs as much direct sunlight and air as possible to stay healthy and green. As the ground starts to warm, it's a good time to repair bare patches that can appear over winter. To do so, carefully rake the patch to create a bed, sow the seeds with a little top-soil and don't let them dry out, they will germinate in a few days (temperature permitting). We can assist in this regard with our bespoke Diamond Green seed and an excellent 100% organic top-dressing. The blossoming of new plants and increased growth of turfgrasses often correlates with an increase of weeds. Not only are unwanted weeds unsightly, but grass will also have to compete with weeds for light, air, water, and nutrients. To combat this, we can apply herbicide from March which is targeted at active weeds present in your lawn. GreenThumb treatments are tailored with the greatest care for lawns in the U.K. We have the solution to transform any piece of grass, whatever the size or condition into a healthy, fresh, and beautiful lawn for you to be proud of all year long. Start your journey to a beautiful lawn. Contact us today by calling 01427 238442 or email us at doncastereast@greenthumb.co.uk.
