Members of Crowle Show Committee are already hard at work preparing for this year’s annual event which takes place at the Show Fields on Godnow Road, Crowle on Sunday 20th July. The historic country show, currently in its 117th year, attracts visitors both locally and nationally and each year the event grows in size as it becomes more popular. Show secretary John Shaw says: “The show is run entirely by volunteers and we endeavor to provide entertainment for as wide a variety of people as possible. This summer’s programme will be no exception.” New attractions range from monster trucks to such main ring events as the spectacular ‘Flying Ryan’ moto cross stunt man, plus a Polo team demonstration. There will also be the traditional Horse jumping, cattle and sheep shows, whilst the traditional Dog Show boasts more than 150 classes of dogs. Mr Shaw adds: “There will be various events throughout the day for all the family with a fairground, donkey rides, plus ‘tug of war’ and ‘brick-lifting’ competitions for the more energetic types. “So please make a note in your diary and come along. It’s vital we draw the crowds in to ensure the future of what is an important part of Crowle’s heritage” For further details visit the website: www.crowleshow.org.uk or call the show secretary on: 01724 710627.

St Norbert's Catholic Primary Voluntary Academy
'To live, love and learn in the footprints of Jesus'
The beginning of March was very hectic with numerous children travelling to and from the Scunthorpe Speech and Drama Festival during the week. We competed in both the individual and group sections and also the Choral Speaking section. Many children came back each day with certificates having been placed in the top three of each section. Our Infant Choral Speakers were placed third and our Junior Choral Speakers were placed first, and together with the first placed children in other categories, were invited to perform at the closing concert on the Saturday night. In addition, for the first time in many years, an Adult Choral Speaking Group made up of staff, governors and parents took part and they too were successful, coming joint first. We would like to thank everyone who helped with transport during the week as without your help, it would not be possible for us to attend on such a large scale. A new After School Activity Club has been introduced this half term. The children in Years 5 and 6 have been learning 'Parkour/Freerunning' - learning to move over and around obstacles using vaults and somersaults. This has proved very popular, with a waiting list for the next opportunity to attend. The whole school attended Mass on Ash Wednesday and the parents of the children in our Reception Class were invited into school to share Collective Worship with their children. The theme for their Worship was “Gathering”. All parents are invited into school once every term to join in a Collective Worship with their children. Our children, if they wish, will be supporting our Lent Fundraising and any donations received will be split between two worthy causes - the Scunthorpe Foodbank and CAFOD's work in Africa. We have also used 'E-Safety' Week to reinforce our teaching of internet safety and there is a link on our website to the CEOP site which contains valuable information for parents. The children also took part in Fairtrade Fortnight and Mrs Hindley kindly supported us again by visiting school with her Fairtrade Products and information. As usual, her stall was very well supported. Watch out for up and coming news of our next expedition to Malealea planned for February 2016 and the fun, fundraising events we will be holding to support our new friends overseas. In addition, if you feel we could help our community in any way, please let us know.

This handsome little chap is Ernie, a Jack Russell Terrier who has come into
Scunthorpe Lawnmowers Ltd
our Rescue after being abandoned outside a busy supermarket, and left for hours in the cold. We believe he is around 9 years old, but he could be a bit older. Don’t let his age put you off, as he is a very lively, friendly little dog, who loves fuss and playing, and is happy to go for long walks. We are looking for a fairly active home for Ernie, preferably with older children and where he is the only pet, as he is not great with some other dogs. Ernie is fully vaccinated and micro-chipped, and will be neutered prior to adoption. If you are interested in this lovely boy, please call us on 01427 728705.

Crowle Cadet Gets Silver A local Crowle Air Cadet has recently completed his Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award. The award is broken down into 4 different sections and requires a considerable amount of time and commitment from the participant. Corporal A Taylor, of 300 (Axhome) Squadron, had to undertake 2, separate, 3 day, self sufficient expeditions as part of his award. This required him to plan the expeditions, carry all equipment required and navigate up to 12 miles a day in remote countryside. Further to his he also devoted evenings to assisting in training newer cadets at the Squadron, improving his fitness and studying aeronautics. After many months of hard work and effort, he finally qualified for his award. Flying Officer V Docherty, the Squadron DofE Officer said “IT is great for Corporal Taylor to get his award. He has shown a lot of commitment and determination to achieve this.” She continued “He qualified for this Bronze award last year and continued with the hard work required to get his Silver. He is now looking to complete his Gold award” Participation in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award is one of the many opportunities 300 (Axholme) Squadron offers to its members, both cadets and staff. It is a youth organisation open to anyone aged 13-17 to join as a cadet. It is also open to those over 20 who wish to join as a staff and assist in the running of such activities and to participate and complete their own award.
BTEC Success for Sergeant Wheatley Sergeant D Wheatley, an Air Cadet with Crowle Squadron, has recently been awarded his BTEC Level 2 in Public Services, with distinction* from the Cadet Vocational Qualification Organisation. The BTEC Level 2 Distinction* Grade is equivalent to 4 GCSE at A* grade. Sgt Wheatley used his experiences and undertakings as an Air Cadets to assist in completing the award. This included participating in teamwork exercises on his Junior NonCommissioned Officer course, walking and working as part of a team for his Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award as well as completing a work book looking at working within the public services. Squadron Commander Flt Lt J Docherty said “It is great to see one of our cadets do so well. Sgt Wheatley put a lot of effort into his BTEC and the outcome shows.” He continued “It is great to see cadets achieve things like this, with very little additional effort beyond being an active cadet”.The BTEC is open to all Air Cadets ages 16 or over and if free of charge. The majority of the work is covered by being a cadet and undertaking cadet activities. The award is administered by the Cadet Vocational Qualifications Office and is one of many awards they offer to cadets. For more information please visit the Squadron website

School visit to Poland Written by Katie Chester An early start saw 20 bleary- eyed students board the bus at an agonisingly early 5.30 am. Arriving at Krakow at noon, everyone unpacked, had a short look round the hotel before leaving to look round the Jewish quarter of Krakow. This involved going to an old synagogue, seeing a monument erected in memory of the sufferers of the holocaust, seeing the remainders of graves which had been made into a wall, and the part which had been the Jewish Ghetto. Finishing the day on a happier note, everyone loved the pizzeria that we went to for tea. Once again another early start saw everyone leave from the hotel at 8 am to go to Auschwitz. To introduce us to what we were about to see we watched a short film named ‘The Liberation of Auschwitz’. Following the film a guide took us around the camp. Seeing battered prosthetic limbs to a room full of human hair it was truly enlightening for everyone involved. Next we had a tour of Birkenau, another more brutal concentration camp. Once again our guide took us round showing us the remains of gas chambers and another monument erected in remembrance of the holocaust. We all lit candles and placed them by the monument to show our respect. Finally to finish the long day we had tea in a Jewish restaurant with live music to accompany our meals. On our final day we started it off walking round Wawel Hill and then into the castle grounds. Luckily it was beautiful weather so a very picturesque tour. After lunch we then visited the Galicia Museum of Jewish Life. First we were shown all the pictures of different places and explained their significance in the Jewish history. Next we met a woman who had been given the title “righteous among the nations” after her family hid a Jewish girl during the war. She was an amazing, truly inspiring person. Finally we were given some free time in the main square of Krakow to get some last minute souvenirs before the journey home. Arriving at school at midnight most people were fast asleep on the bus home. It was a thought provoking and interesting trip that everyone had truly loved!
Class Act The Axholme Academy held their heat of Class Act on Thursday 6th March. There were 13 acts performing for the judges, setting a very high standard and giving the judges a difficult decision to make. The winners were chosen as Kyle Murphy (Age 15) and Greg Mell (age 16) who performed Bonfire Heart by James Blunt on guitar and keyboard and Maddy Chesman, Chloe Hunter and Neve Stokoe (all aged 13) who performed Jolene by Dolly Parton.
The winners go forward to represent our School at the semi-finals held at Redbourne Club in Scunthorpe in April. The sum raised was over £250.00 which will go to School funds and also towards a Song writing Music workshop for GCSE students.

Camera Club Competition Report The chairman of Axholme Camera Club found himself a very difficult job on the Wednesday night, let me explain why. The meeting on 5th March was taken up with a print competition and Geoff Trinder our chairman had the duty of Judging them. Now Judging is not an easy obligation at the best of times, but when you accept the responsibility of doing it at your own club that makes it a near impossible duty. However, Geoff has a great deal of experience in the field of Natural History, which just happened to be the subject for this competition. Not only is Geoff the chairman of the camera club he is also the chairman and a long time member of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust. So he is very well positioned to comment on this very wide subject. Plus, Geoff has been photographing insects, flowers and wildlife subjects for a great many years, even so he still had a very challenging evening picking out the top images. There was a wide variety of Natural History subjects including snakes, bees, birds, field mice, flowers, fungi and the list goes on, giving the members present a very entertaining evening. The quality of the images was high and Geoff's comments reflected this as he attempted to find the ones deserving the higher marks. Well done to all those who entered photographs and congratulations to those who received the top wards. George Fiddler
