Editors Letter… What a glorious July! The heat wave continued, for 2 weeks, lets hope the sun shines for a glorious August! I am sure all the Summer Fetes and different community events are well under way now….. Rescue Day on the 13th July was an astounding success, the weather couldn't have been more different!!
A note for your diary, the Festival of the Plough in Low Burnham. This is a must visit! If you haven't been before make a special effort, its local to you and a great day out for the family! See more details on pages 18 and 19. My daughter at this moment is on a residential break in Anglesey on an Adventure Holiday. The house is very quiet without her! I am sure for all those children who were lucky enough to go on a school trip this year found it very rewarding as we prepare our children for life after school!, I would like to wish everyone who is preparing to move up to a new school and those leaving school to join further education the best of luck!

Four students awarded the Diana Award
The Axholme Academy is delighted to announce that four Year 11 students Kirsten Carney, Charlotte Ellwood, Rachel Allen and Eleanor Fields have been publicly honoured with the Diana Award. The Diana Award was established in 1999 as a lasting legacy to Diana, Princess of Wales’ belief that young people have the power to change the world. The Award exists to celebrate young people who support others and strive to improve their communities. 38,000 inspirational young people have received the Diana Award for demonstrating the qualities associated with the late Princess – compassion and a selfless commitment to improving the lives of others. The students were part of a Peer Mentoring team who made outstanding contributions to The Axholme Academy and North Lincolnshire Anti-Bullying programme. Kirsten and Charlotte completed specialised training as SEN Peer Mentors, supporting identified students. While Rachel and Eleanor specialised as Cyber mentors, promoting E Safely in schools. The skills they developed allowed them to present their own presentations within the Local Authority’s Celebrations events. Showing themselves to be excellent role models. We at The Axholme Academy are extremely proud of the girls. The Diana Award will encourage them to continue their work and will hopefully inspire others to stand up for their beliefs. Tessy Ojo Executive Director of The Diana Award said: “The Diana Award is proud to recognise young campaigners, like Kirsten, Charlotte, Rachel and Eleanor who have had the confidence and courage to stand up for what they believe. Principal, Joe Sellars, said ‘the academy has established quite a tradition of students gaining this honour over the years since the Diana Award was introduced. These four girls are great students who have selflessly given many hours of their own time to support others and we are very proud of them’.

A budding young cyclist has reason to cheer, as he has been crowned the East Midlands U/10 Road Race Champion. Max Poole from Garthorpe won the championship, in a race at RAF Barkston Heath near Grantham, covering the East Midlands region, which includes Lincolnshire, Leicestershire, Derbyshire & Nottinghamshire amongst others. Max (10) who is a student at St. Norberts Catholic Academy in Crowle, has already won numerous races around the region, and is set to compete in the National Youth Championships, held this year at Blackpool. He is a member of the local Lincsquad club, and also the BikeBox Racing Team based at Rotherham, and is the reigning local track league champion in his age category. His mother Tracy, stated, "Max loves to race, and is proving to be a talented rider, who seems to possess all the different skills needed to succeed. We would like to thank all the coaches, at the Lincsquad Youth Academy, and Alan Hamshaw at Bikebox for their support in continuing to help Max to keep improving.

On Monday 24th June students made the journey to Lincoln University to produce the “AX NEWS” end of term student newspaper. This culminated in students researching and preparing articles on various items such as News, Entertainment & Sport. Over a period of four separate days the students interviewed staff & students regarding various topics such as school trips, teacher’s retiring, a famous poet visits the academy to name but a few. Copies of the newspaper will be distributed to students, parents and members of the community. It is also accessible on our school website www.theaxholmeacademy.com where you will find lots of information about the academy.

Fighting Chance By Aidan McDonald ‘Fighting Chance” started on the 9th January and is a programme run on a Wednesday afternoon in partnership with Humberside Police. The course is for students to learn about mixed martial arts and to develop their confidence. It will help people choose a healthy life style also it supports the fact that a healthy life style is a better life style. The club lets students meet positive role models. A fighting chance is an opportunity to learn new and interesting skills This club has been started because it is different and interesting to students. It allows students to learn a new skill and gain focus which they can use to improve their school studies. It helps with the healthy life style message and how to choose a healthy path to follow in life. It is to help encourage students make more positive choices in life. So far the students have got their yellow belts and are now working towards their orange belts. They have now started their second rotation session and it is a ten week programme. The programme is now coming to the end but will be starting up again in September – see Mrs Smith for more information! Jake Stockwell was given an award for ‘Outstanding Student’ by the coaches and received a trophy and sash in recognition of his efforts. Principal, Joe Sellars, said ‘Fighting Chance has proven to be a really good programme that has motivated our participating students to improve their physical skills but also to lead to real commitment to do their very best back in school. We are really proud of their achievements especially in achieving their yellow belts. We are really grateful for the work done by Humberside Police in supporting this programme.’
