Editors Letter.... Christmas is a time of great celebration, particularly for kids who, normally, are the main beneficiaries of so many presents that they don't know what to do with them! For adults it is often an occasion for taking holidays from work, and spending time with the family. Despite the fact that Winter has well and truly made its presence felt , it is also a 'feel good' time of year for many people. One of the great things about this time of year is that it gives us the excuse to exchange positive pleasantries with people we might barely know, and possibly to say really nice things to people we know very well. So remember the people in your area who are on their own this Christmas, make an effort to visit and say ‗Merry Christmas‘. Did you know that Boxing Day originated under Queen Victoria when trades people collected their Christmas Boxes or bonuses for their hard work throughout the year?

I am sure there are many Christmas events this year, there is a Christmas Market in the new Crowle market Square on Saturday 11 December. If you haven't seen the new square, be sure to make a visit. Don't forget to watch out for Father Christmas on his sleigh who will travel the Isle throughout December, a well worth charity by the Lions.

Neighbourhood Priority One = Crowle Town Centre – Anti-social Behaviour and Vehicle Nuisance. Humberside Police have now introduced a Dispersal Order in Crowle town centre to help tackle the on going concern over anti-social behaviour in the area. The granting of the Dispersal Order is a result of the Neighbourhood team working closely with North Lincolnshire PCSO PCSO 7576 PC1717 Council and the Crowle Town Council. The Wendy Frear Paul Fearon Graham Godley implementation of the dispersal order has reduced calls for service and the youths are now fully aware of its existence. Residents have commented on the reduction of anti-social behaviour in the area. One issue raised was that some of the youths are now congregating in the new car parking area in the town centre which was formally the car park for the George and Dragon Public House. The Neighbourhood Team have liaised with North Lincolnshire Council and Crowle Town Council and are to monitor the situation before deciding if to include the area in the dispersal zone. The Crowle Youth Club, Street Sports and other activities are provided by the local and town council. Crowle Town Council are currently looking into what facilities they may be able to provide in the future for the young people. Please contact Colin Shucksmith at the Youth Centre to find out what activities are available for youths aged between 10 and 19 years. Neighbourhood Priority Two = Trentside and Chapel Lane, Keadby – Suspicious incidents and damage. There have been a number of calls regarding the suspicious incidents occurring at the above locations with persons wandering around at all hours of the day and night. There have also been a number of small fires in derelict buildings on Trentside and damage has been caused to the flood walls. The Neighbourhood Policing Team is continuing to patrol the area. Two males have been convicted at Court regarding theft of property from farm premises on Trentside. Another male has been arrested for theft of metal and enquiries are continuing. Information supplied by members of the public regarding the illegal activities of some young people in Keadby is being collated and may assist in solving some of the recent offences of theft. Two males have been convicted at North Lincolnshire Magistrates Court regarding theft of property from farm premises at Keadby. A male from Keadby has been arrested for the theft of metals and is currently on police bail whilst enquiries are ongoing. Two males have been charged and bailed to Magistrates Court regarding burglary to farm buildings in Crowle. A male is currently on court bail regarding assault and criminal damage at Crowle. A male have been convicted at North Lincolnshire Magistrates Court regarding the unlawful possession of a shotgun in Crowle. The Court has made an order for the destruction of the gun. A female has been interviewed regarding the growing of a number of cannabis plants at Ealand. The plants have been seized for destruction. On Halloween Night, Sunday 31/10/10 MP Andrew Percy accompanied Temporary Inspector Garlick and PC Godley on patrol on the Isle of Axholme Wards in order to speak to local youths and residents about any issues or concerns they have in their respective areas. There were several groups of children in fancy dress out ‗trick or treating‘ but the evening was spoilt by unknown persons throwing eggs at an address in Crowle.

The Isle of Axholme

Where You Live

Your Local History

THE EARLY BAPTISTS IN THE ISLE OF AXHOLME In the 16th and 17th centuries, political and religious unrest and revolt were coupled together. The extreme Parliamentarians were the people with the most extreme views. One particular branch of these people was called Independents. In political terms they advocated local self-government with the King having little power. In religion they wanted to worship in a simple manner independent of the Church of England. The Independent‟s activities were centred around Gainsborough and Scrooby. Many are remembered as the Pilgrim Fathers. An offshoot of the Independents in Epworth was the Baptists. The earliest Baptists appear on the scene at the beginning of the 17th century. There is positive evidence that they existed in 1626. The Church‟s leader in Epworth, according to letters of 1630 found in Amsterdam, was a baker called Johnson. Very few Baptists records were kept of numbers or meetings because in those days there was little religious tolerance. People who rejected the Church of England for other non-Conformist religions did so on peril of a fine, prison, torture, deportment or death. Until 1612 they were liable to be burnt at the stake. The Baptists met in each other‟s houses or in woods or lofts in times of danger. Even in 1663 after the religious political motivated Civil War, the Conventicle Act forbade meetings of more than five people in private houses “for any exercise of religion in any other manner than is the practice of the Church of England”. Stiff penalties were imposed - £5.00 or three months jail for the first offence, £10.00 or six months jail for the second offence and deportation to America for the third offence. It was not 1689 with the Toleration Act that religious conscience was officially free. The Baptists‟ church register for 1673 gave a total membership for the Isle of 126 centred mainly on Epworth, Crowle and Butterwick. The Baptist belief of total immersion was appropriately suited to the “den of waters” in the Isle. The River Torne was famous for its dippings. There was also an old farmhouse called „Dippings House Farm” near which many of the dippings took place. The Baptist Church in the Isle having weathered many early difficulties has survived and is thriving today. Crowle & Ealand Heritage Society The recent development in Crowle Market place provided an opportunity to get an insight into the history of Crowle. Kevin Trott of Allen Archaeology was employed as site archaeologist during the works. Finds in the Market Place included Roman pottery, the remains of an old wooden boat and a well preserved child's Tudor shoe. Kevin spoke at the Crowle and Ealand Heritage Society on Thursday 11th November to say what was found and how is has changed our understanding of the history of Crowle.

Kevin Trott Crowle & Ealand Heritage Society Meetings are held in St Norbert's Church Hall which is located behind the Roman Catholic Church on Fieldside in Crowle. For more information please phone either Betsy Lutz on (01724 711556) or Angus Townley (01724 711191)

Althorpe and Keadby Newsletter Robinwood On Friday 16th September, Year 6 went to Robinwood activity centre in Lancashire. We all played Mario Kart on DSi on the bus journey. Me and Ronan Hughes went to the rafting activity and were equipped with a super raft made out of strong skipping ropes, inflatable rings and a wooden board. ―It was great fun!‖. We had to row to a rock in the middle of the lake and get back faster than the other pair. My favourite part of Robinwood was the giant swing because it was super fast! Apparently we weigh 4 times as much when you are on it. It makes you jump when you chop the banana to let you go! Bonfire Night Year 1 have been learning all about Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder plot. They used some old clothes and made a pretend Guy by stuffing the clothes with newspaper. Unfortunately we were not able to collect pennies from the grown ups, for our Guy, because children cannot buy fireworks anymore (which we think is a sensible rule). He will still go on top of a bonfire to be burned on bonfire night. We also composed our own music, did beautiful pictures and used good descriptive words about fireworks. We know how to have a good time on bonfire night, safely. Gunness & Burringham Fun Run Perfect running conditions, enabled our team of twelve runners to have an enjoyable and successful race on the morning of Sunday 10th October, 2010. All put in strong performances and can be very proud of their achievements. Well done, in particular to Millie Wright Mclury and Kane Staniforth for taking part in their first Sunday race. Keiran Sycamore came in 3rd which was an outstanding achievement and Hayden Murray and Cameron Hawksworth were home in 4th and 5th. Thanks guys! Thank you team (Hayden Murray, Kieran Sycamore, Cameron Hawksworth, Kane Staniforth, Millie Wright Mclury, Shandrel Hawksworth, Emily Broadbent, Talia and Cory Holland's) for your great team spirit and for wanting to run! Many thanks too, to all the parents who supported us on the morning. Miss. Fawcett and I, did the 10K after the Fun Run and made it in 1hr 8mins – we will break the hour!!

St Norbert’s Catholic Primary School Newsletter Welcome to our December Newsletter. By the time you read this article, our new extended school hall should have been open for a couple of weeks. The hall was opened to the community on 17 November at our Christmas Bingo evening and we were able to accommodate everyone in more comfortable and spacious surroundings.

The photographs show the hall and our new extended kitchen facility

If there are any groups who would like to hire the hall for a one off event or on a regular basis, please get in touch with us on 01724 710249. The hall has been fitted out with stage lighting for performances and projector equipment. We have two kitchens off the main hall – the original which can be used for serving drinks through the hatch into the hall and the new one offering a cooking/food preparation/serving area. Staging can also be provided on request. The children are busy practising for our Christmas performance which takes place on Tuesday 7 December. This year we are performing Dickens‘ ―Scrooge‖ with Ebenezer, the spirits, Jacob Marley, Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim and nephew Fred. All the children from Class 2 upwards have a part to play and they have been busy learning their lines and singing the songs around school and in Drama Club – making for a lovely, happy, infectious atmosphere around our school. If you would like to see our performance, please telephone the school to check if tickets are still available. There is no charge for tickets. Refreshments will also be available during the morning. We will also be welcoming our friends from Greenacres on this day and look forward to seeing them again. The children from Class 1 and the Nursery are having their own Christmas performance for their friends and family to enjoy later in the month and are also practising hard and learning their songs. On behalf of everyone at St Norbert‘s, we would like to wish you a very Happy Christmas and a Happy New Year and, in the immortal words of Tiny Tim and Ebenezer ―God Bless Us, Everyone‖.

Lights. Don‘t we just love lights at Christmas! l drive out of my way to see houses in our villages lit up brilliantly. Every year, this Vicar goes round all the Christmas shops looking for new, sparkling decorations and lights! The first thing I do when I get home or arrive in Church is to turn on the lights on the Christmas tree. In the story of Jesus‘ birth, there was one brightly shining star that guided the Wise men to find Jesus, and present him with expensive gifts. Then there was a blinding light – a panoply of angels praising God – who made the shepherds hurry to see what was happening in Bethlehem. Later on, Jesus became known as ‗The Light of the World‘. That‘s why many Churches sing ―Carols by Candlelight‖ – to rejoice in God‘s love for us. Throughout the Christmas season, we celebrate the light that never goes out. At Christmas, there are many Churches and chapels all holding their own Christmas Celebrations. I do hope that at sometime, somewhere, you will come and celebrate ―THE LIGHT‖ that never goes out. A foot note for those of you who live in Althorpe and Keadby. There will be a Celebration of ‗Midnight Mass‘ on Christmas Eve beginning at 11.30pm At St Oswald‘s Church Althorpe with Keadby. This is the first time we have been able to offer this in a number of years. I do hope many people will enjoy this very traditional time of worship this Christmas. North Axholme School News letter Students and staff wore their jeans to school on Friday 1st October in order to raise money for research in to genetic disorders. Assemblies and CS lessons during the week supported the event by giving facts behind the fun as students learned more about the range of genetic disorders which occur both on a worldwide scale as well as within our own school community. £377.72 was raised on the day!! All staff at North Axholme School wore something ‗Pink‘ and paid £2.00 for Breast Cancer. A raffle was held and a sale of cakes kindly donated by ‗Albion Bakery‘ in Epworth. The event raised £150.00. The event was held on the 22nd October and was organised by Jan Simm, Teaching Assistant at the school

30th Anniversary of the Crowle Christmas Lights Display and Switch-on event Many years ago a group of volunteers came together to display Christmas lights in Crowle. The tradition grew to include the dressing of a Christmas tree and the staging of a switch-on event. It seems very fitting that the first switch-on event since Crowle Market Place underwent a £3 million face lift is the 30 th anniversary. On Saturday December 4th Christmas is coming early to Crowle. Father Christmas is arriving in the Market Place at 5pm and will be in his grotto handing out small treats to all the children. There will be plenty of activities to entertain before the switch-on service starts at 6pm; music, dancing, stalls, late night shopping, funfair rides, prize raffle, etc. The market stalls are ran by other local community groups and the money they will make on the night will help fund their value community work. The lights display will be bigger and better this year with a large central Christmas tree, new lights shapes and additional wall-mounted trees. We hope you are able to join us for this fun filled family evening. We would like to thank the community of Crowle and Ealand who have supported our festive fundraising events throughout the year (Crowle Show, Father Christmas‘ early tour in June and Christmas bingo) and thank local businesses and organisations who have supported our activities, in particular Crowle Town Council, the Isle of Axholme Lions, the White Hart and Parkin Butchers. We are also running the Best Christmas Decorated House Competition again this year. So if you decorate your house and/or garden at Christmastime then you could be the winner. The competition will be independently judged during the week commencing 13th December and the winner awarded a shield that they can keep for the year. Simply decorate your house and/or garden and you could be receiving a knock on your door close to Christmastime! Ray Evans Chairman Crowle Lights Committee .
