Remembrance Activity at the academy As part of commemorating the 100th anniversary of the WW1 Armistice Day all students took part in a Poppy making activity that took place in tutor time. During this tutor time students learnt about why Poppies are used as a remembrance symbol. Students were inspired by the major art installation Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red at the Tower of London, which marked one hundred years since the first full day of Britain's involvement in the First World War. It was created by artists Paul Cummins and Tom Piper, 888,246 ceramic poppies were used in the installation and each poppy represented a British military fatality during the war. From this inspiration each student in school created a paper poppy which was then used to produce a cascade of poppies which were displayed in our front entrance, falling from castle walls with silhouettes of soldiers looking on. The activity was enjoyed by students as a different way to remember the soldiers past and present who have been lost in conflicts around the world, some students even writing thank you messages on the back of their poppies.

North Lindsey College Roadshow visits The Axholme Academy North Lindsey College brought their interactive Roadshow to the academy supported by ex-academy students. This is a great way to allow our current students the opportunity to question and chat to these past students, gaining an insight into different college courses on offer. Students in years 7 to 11 were able to visit and try a whole host of interactive activities representing the range of courses on offer at North Lindsey from health and social care, sport to animal management giving them a real taste of what is available at the college post 16. The Roadshow is always really successful because students are able to get hands on experience in the comfort of the academy supported by their teachers. This allows them to feel more confident in asking questions about their future. They are able to identify first-hand some of the skills they will need to prepare themselves for life at college.

Candlelight and Supper in the Kitchen Have you seen Susanna's kitchen on a daylight tour? Or maybe even not seen it at all? If either of these fit you, then you need to join us on one of our candlelit tours. Come and see the house as the Wesleys might have lived in it. Picture an early winter evening, light gone from the sky, no street lighting or anything similar as there's no electricity. Darkness is the order of the day. You've spent time working outside, or maybe travelling back from market in Bawtry and you open the door to enter. You step inside to the warm glow of the candles on the table and dresser, and the welcome heat and flare of the blazing fire in the entrance hall with the smell of wood smoke and maybe something savoury emanating from the kitchen. Home at last to comfort and supper. All this and more awaits you on the candlelit tour. You'll be welcomed by a costumed guide with whom you wait until all the expected parties arrive, then you will be led by lantern light to the front door where you knock for entrance. The door is opened by another costumed guide who welcomes you in, just as you would have been had it been in the early 18th century. From there, with only candles to light your way, you are taken around the whole house and introduced to the story of the Wesley family and some of the activities that happened in the house, activities that changed the world almost as much as it has been changed by wars and conflict. Of course those changes are much less violent than conflict, but no less important. You will end your tour in the kitchen, and sit around the table in front of another welcoming fire and have the opportunity to talk to each other and to your guides while you enjoy your repast. Hot fruit punch and home made pies and cakes to tempt your palate. Hot water crust pastry filled with pork flavoured with sage and onion and a layer of Bramley apple, mince pies, fruit cake with butter and cheese, maybe sausage rolls, or mushroom tarts. Who knows what culinary delights await you. The only way to find out is to join us, and we'd love to share our evening with you. Booking is essential, and places are limited, so call the Rectory and stake your place. We can take payment by card over the phone so don't let anything delay you. We look forward to seeing you all on either the 6th or the 7th of December. Cath Fordham

St Norbert's Catholic Primary Voluntary Academy

'To live, love and learn in the footprints of Jesus' Welcome to our December Newsletter!

Collective Worship led by Class 5 took place on Friday 9th November and this focused on Remembrance Day and the poppies which had grown on the battlefields of Western Europe; poppies were adopted as a symbol of remembrance and hope. Three children from Class 5 represented our school at the Remembrance Day Services at both Ealand Cenotaph and Crowle Cenotaph on Sunday 11th November. One of them wrote this moving poem: Heroes 1914 World War 1, lives were lost, battles were won. The ground shook and filled with smoke. Gun fire was heard, the peace was broke. Young men lay in a trench and wait, their future unknown, no end date. Once stood a man, so young so brave Now he is a hero, in a small shallow grave. On the land of war, the poppies grow, on the graves of those who fought for you 1918 too many people have died, so wear your poppy, and wear it with pride. We are currently celebrating Anti-bullying week and providing important e-safety workshops with pupils, parents and our community. It is very important that everyone knows how to keep safe online. As our thoughts now turn towards Christmas, the children in all classes are beginning to prepare for our Christmas Performances. Following our Rights Respecting ethos, our main school Christmas Performance is based around the children’s right to a home. You are invited to attend the free performance on Thursday morning, 13th December. Doors will open at 9.30 for a 10am start. Refreshments will be available before the performance and during the interval. Please book your tickets with the school office on 01724 710249 if you would like to attend as seats will be limited. Our friends from Greenacres will also be attending and we look forward to seeing them in school on Tuesday 11th December. The Nursery and Reception children will soon prepare their Christmas Performances for Wednesday 5th December. Children as young as 3 will be performing for their friends and family. Their performance is called ‘My First Nativity’ and is a traditional Christmas play with music and singing. Our school choir will also be taking part in the Crowle and Ealand Regen Group Christmas Concert alongside Hatfield Brass Band on Monday 10th December. We have a lovely new carol to sing as well as our old favourites. Tickets will be available from school nearer to the time. In addition, they will be visiting Greenacres to sing Christmas Carols with the residents. The school choir will be performing in a Christmas Carol Concert for Crowle Community at 6pm on Tuesday 18th December. The concert will take place in St Norbert’s Church at 6pm and refreshments will then be available in the school hall from 7pm. Tickets will be available from our school from the beginning of December. These will include festive food and drink. You are all most welcome! The Isle Community Choir who are based in our school will also be holding their Christmas Concert on Wednesday 19th December. Tickets, again, will be available from the school office or members of the choir. Refreshments will be available during the interval. On Thursday December 20th at 10am, you are warmly invited to attend St Norbert’s Church for an end of term Advent Mass with carols. If you would like to know more about our school, please visit and we will be pleased to show you around. Best wishes from all at St Norbert’s for a very happy and peaceful Christmas!
