Welcome to the December issue of the Crowle and Ealand Arrow! Christmas is just round the corner!, Whilst most of us are looking forward to festive activities during December, we must give a thought to the victims of the floods last month. The rain and the flooding of villages surrounding Doncaster saw yet again the nightmare of a repeat of 2007. Whilst river levels are rising with the continuous rain be vigilant for flooding in your areas. Flood Alert What it means Flooding is possible. Be prepared. When it's used Two hours to two days in advance of flooding. What to do Be prepared to act on your flood plan. Prepare a flood kit of essential items. Monitor local water levels and the flood forecast on our website. Flood Warning What it means Flooding is expected. Immediate action required. When it's used Half an hour to one day in advance of flooding. What to do Move family, pets and valuables to a safe place. Turn off gas, electricity and water supplies if safe to do so. Put flood protection equipment in place Severe Flood Warning What it means Severe flooding. Danger to life. When it's used When flooding poses a significant threat to life. What to do Stay in a safe place with a means of escape. Be ready should you need to evacuate from your home. Co-operate with the emergency services. Call 999 if you are in immediate danger. Enjoy the read, keep safe and please note the deadline for the January issue is earlier than usual, Friday 6th December for distribution by 2nd January. If you are interested in advertising or simply emailing me some community news, please be in touch before the date. Wishing everyone a Happy Christmas from the Arrow team!

House/shed/garage burglaries have featured over the last month as the dark nights have set in. Whilst we do not want to concern residents, we would like to remind everyone of some basic home security measures which can significantly reduce the likelihood of becoming a vic m of burglary. The most likely entry point for a burglar is via the rear so do not neglect security there. Fit an alarm or a dummy alarm box. Many people point out that when an alarm sounds nobody takes any no ce these days. The burglar will though. Install a security light which works on a movement sensor to light up areas which a burglar may use for cover. Use mer switches to turn lights on when you are not in. Ensure any gates at the rear are locked, not just with a bolt near the top which can be opened by reaching over. Thieves do not want to be seen and surveillance is o en provided by neighbours who live opposite or who overlook your property. Do not allow bushes and hedges to grow too high. Consider the security on your shed. Is it propor onate to the value of items you keep inside such as cycles and garden equipment? e.g. an expensive cycle stored in a wooden shed with only a £2.50 padlock for security. It is also worth no ng that a burglar will some mes use an item which is easily taken from a poorly secured shed to facilitate their entry into a house. Fit trellis along the top of fencing at the rear as this will break if a burglar tries to climb over your fence. Spiky / prickly bushes and climbers are also a deterrent. Report all suspicious circumstances. Door‐to‐door salesman appertaining to be selling energy or double‐glazing are o en checking out and planning future burglaries or even trying their luck there and then if they get no reply to knocking. In rural communi es, local residents know when someone or something looks out of place far more than in urban areas. Join your local Neighbourhood Watch Group or start one up yourself. The role of co‐ordinator does not have to be a burdensome role and your group can be as small or large as you wish. In effect the key role of a NHW co‐ordinator is to act as a conduit for police informa on which in today’s world is literally the touch of a bu on. The vital part is that police have that single point of contact in as many areas as possible. NHW is proven to reduce and prevent crime and it is an ini a ve well suited to rural communi es where tradi onal community spirit s ll exists. We would also ask for your assistance in keeping an eye on any proper es where you know the occupants are away or out for whatever length of me. Our intelligence suggests that the offenders are ‘doing their homework’ in iden fying proper es from which to steal. If you see any suspicious ac vity then please call 999 if you believe a crime is about to be commi ed or 101 if you noted suspicious ac vity which has now passed. If you are able to get descrip ons of persons or vehicle details without pu ng yourself in any danger, then that would be valuable informa on. Check out our dedicated neighbourhood policing pages for information using this link: www.humberside.police.uk/all-policing-teams

The Crowle Entertainers are currently rehearsing their 19th annual pantomime at the Crowle Community Hall and this year it will be Camelot the Panto – based on the legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, in an original script devised by the cast and directed by Gill Vickers with choreography by Kim Oakley of Streetbeat. Camelot is a magical world with the wizard Merlin and the evil Egregia battling it out to see who will win control over Camelot and the evil Mordred and Morgana trying to take over the throne. There are dragons, princesses, knights in shining armour, beautiful serving maids and a wouldbe magician whose tricks keep going wrong. There will be lots of audience participation, music, dance and laughter, as we follow the adventures of Arthur and his knights, so come along prepared to join in the fun! Performances will take place on Saturday 11th January at 2.30pm and 7.30pm and on Sunday 12th January at 2.30pm at the Crowle Community Hall. Tickets priced £5 and £4 for concessions are available from the Regen Shop, Crowle or by calling 01724 711212, or 01427 311802 or by texting 07419 319796. Please note that although tickets can be purchased on the door, advance purchase or booking is highly advisable to avoid disappointment.

It's Glow Time! Brigley House Christmas Lights and Friends are back with a whole new Christmas show, even more lights (can you believe it!) , new songs and of course some festive favorites too. After raising over ÂŁ4,400 last year for the Scunthorpe Hospital Maternity Bereavement Suite Appeal , this years show will be raising vital funds to support another fantastic local cause - Lindsey Lodge Hospice. It costs over ÂŁ3.5 million a year to run the hospice and over 80% of this cost comes from fundraising activities and charitable donations. Rob Brown from Brigley House says "We cannot wait to reveal this years show and are thrilled to be supporting Lindsey Lodge Hospice who in turn support many people in our local community and their families. ". Brigley House Christmas Lights can be found on Saffron Way in Crowle - the lights show runs from 4pm to 9.30pm every evening from December 1st through to January 1st.

Performathon 2019 8pm on Friday 11th October marked the start of the first 12 hour Performathon at The Axholme Academy. 70 students arrived with their sleeping bags, food, enthusiasm and magical talent to help raise funds for the Creative Arts department. As soloists and groups, the students took it in turns to perform a selection of dance, comedy and music on the brightly lit stage in the main hall throughout the whole night. The atmosphere was amazing and the event provided an excellent platform for students to try out their performing talents and build confidence. Performathon 2019 raised ÂŁ1400 which will be spent on resources to benefit all students working in the art and music areas at the Academy.
North Lindsey College Roadshow The annual NLC Roadshow took place in the main hall on Wednesday 6th November and was a success with all year groups benefiting from it. We had a great range of curriculum areas represented including, Sport, Animal Care and Engineering. It is a great opportunity for students to ask questions, explore subject areas and investigate career paths as early as Year 7. The college enjoy the chance to come and engage with our students and showcase what they have to offer. Staff and students here at the academy had the opportunity to have a go at a range of activities in different sectors.
Crowle Foodfest 2019 Musicians from The Axholme Academy were invited to perform at the Crowle Food Fest on Friday 1st November. Six students entertained the local community for a total of 90 minutes performing a selection of vocal and piano solos. The students involved were: Jake Pullan, Lexi Shearman, Poppy Murphy, Lilly Bunce, Evie Darley and Halle Stroud and they were truly fabulous. For some of the students, this was their debut public performance. Mrs Bishop, music teacher at the Academy, hopes that this will be the first of many opportunities for the academy to perform in the local and wider community.

Year 11 Duke of Edinburgh Qualifying Expedition My D of E Experience by Harry Griffiths My Duke of Edinburgh expedition experience was certainly surprising. Our expedition was on the weekend of the 28th and the 29th of September. My group of six had to deal with constantly inconsistent weather from the moment that the trip started. My group although due the unfortunate climate didn’t get lost for most of the trip. This was very good as during our practice expedition we went slightly off track and as such extended our journey quite dramatically. On our real expedition however we only became a bit confused when we travelled off the side of the map and it only delayed us by 10 minutes while we got our bearings and continued towards the campsite. Throughout our journey we had to create a photo diary of our trip according to our specific theme and so our group chose the theme of “Hiding”. This would give us chance to better explore the environment around us and have a chance to capture landscape while hiding within it; giving a better experience to the trip. Our photo diary was attached as a part of our PowerPoint presentation that we had to create towards our award. When we arrived at our campsite we set up our tents relatively quickly because of the impending rain and then proceeded to start our cooking. In the morning everyone felt awful because of the torrential rain overnight which had managed to wet most people’s possessions even within the tents. Our group set off relatively in time after having breakfast. The expedition of course though isn’t the only part of the award. We had to complete a skill, volunteering section and a physical activity for 3 to 6 months. Without these sections there is no point in doing the expedition as this is also what it is assessed on. Overall the Duke of Edinburgh award is an amazing opportunity and gives you both skills and experiences that are invaluable in today’s world and I believe that everyone should attempt the challenge.
