The name’s Sleek, Mr Sleek: Richard wins Crowle Slimming Worlds group weight-loss title Richard Turner has officially been named as Crowle Mr Sleek after losing 3st and 8 lbs with Slimming World. Richard Turner, age 34, has gone from weighing 19 stone 1 at his heaviest to 15 stone 7lbs since joining the Crowle group, which is held at St Norberts Parish Hall Fieldside Crowle And he says he was delighted to receive the award: “I was really flattered that the other members chose me as their Mr Sleek. As a man, joining a slimming group was a big decision and very nerve-wracking – I expected to be the only man there – but I can honestly say it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done and this is just the icing on the cake.” Richard’s big decision’ to join Slimming World came in June 2017 and, after watching his weight slowly creep up and years of being overweight , he says he knew he had to make a change. Richard says: “I’d heard about Slimming World before from friends so I knew it worked, yet I was still worried because I thought it would just be myself and a room full of women. Whilst that wasn’t far from the reality, I was pleasantly surprised to see some men there too, but it didn’t matter because everyone was so welcoming and it only took a few weeks before I felt right at home. I’m so glad I didn’t let my nerves stop me from losing weight and I’d recommend Slimming World to everyone – men and women.” Richard says: “I used to think that losing weight meant eating nothing but salad and having to eat small portions, which definitely didn’t appeal to me. I couldn’t believe it when my Consultant, Savina, told me I could eat unlimited amount of meat and fish, potatoes and rice, vegetables and fruit. In my first week I couldn’t believe how much I was eating and I still lost 8lbs. I haven’t looked back since. Since then Richard’s lost a total of 3st 8 lbs and dropped 8 inches from his waist. He’s become much more active too and regularly attends the gym, started swimming, enjoys walking and even gone back playing rugby!! Savina Pemberton, who runs the Crowle Slimming World group which Richard attends, hopes he will inspire other men in the Crowle Town who want to lose weight: “Blokes might think that coming to a slimming group is a bit ‘girly’. I hope Richard will show that lots of different people come along to our groups and each and every one gets a warm and friendly welcome. It doesn’t matter if you’re a man or a woman, young or old or anything like that because ultimately we’re all there for the same reason – to lose weight and to feel healthier and more confident and to be able to do more with our families and friends, and that’s what is most important. Our eating plan is so generous that you won’t have to miss out on any of your favorites and there’s lots going on in the Crowle group so it’ll be lots of fun too.

House burglaries have featured over the last few months as the dark nights have set in and in particular vacant properties have been targeted. This may be due to occupants being on holiday or homes where elderly residents have gone into respite care or permanently relocated to assisted living. Whilst we do not want to concern residents, we would like to remind everyone of some basic home security measures which can significantly reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim of burglary. The most likely entry point for a burglar is via the rear so do not neglect security there. Fit an alarm or a dummy alarm box. Many people point out that when an alarm sounds nobody takes any notice these days. The burglar will though. Install a security light which works on a movement sensor to light up areas which a burglar may use for cover. Use timer switches to turn lights on when you are not in. Ensure any gates at the rear are locked, not just with a bolt near the top which can be opened by reaching over. Thieves do not want to be seen and surveillance is often provided by neighbours who live opposite or who overlook your property. Do not allow bushes and hedges to grow too high. Consider the security on your shed. Is it proportionate to the value of items you keep inside such as cycles and garden equipment? e.g. an expensive cycle stored in a wooden shed with only a £2.50 padlock for security. It is also worth noting that a burglar will sometimes use an item which is easily taken from a poorly secured shed to facilitate their entry into a house. Fit trellis along the top of fencing at the rear as this will break if a burglar tries to climb over your fence. Spiky / prickly bushes and climbers are also a deterrent. Report all suspicious circumstances. Door-to-door salesman appertaining to be selling energy or double-glazing are often checking out and planning future burglaries or even trying their luck there and then if they get no reply to knocking. In rural communities, local residents know when someone or something looks out of place far more than in urban areas. Join your local Neighbourhood Watch Group or start one up yourself. The role of co-ordinator does not have to be a burdensome role and your group can be as small or large as you wish. In effect the key role of a NHW co-ordinator is to act as a conduit for police information which in today’s world is literally the touch of a button. The vital part is that police have that single point of contact in as many areas as possible. NHW is proven to reduce and prevent crime and it is an initiative well suited to rural communities where traditional community spirit still exists. We would also ask for your assistance in keeping an eye on any properties where you know the occupants are away or out for whatever length of time. Our intelligence suggests that the offenders are ‘doing their homework’ in identifying properties from which to steal. If you see any suspicious activity then please call 999 if you believe a crime is about to be committed or 101 if you noted suspicious activity which has now passed. If you are able to get descriptions of persons or vehicle details without putting yourself in any danger, then that would be valuable information. Axholme Neighbourhood Policing Team
