Fishlake Flooding News After the devastation of the floods on Friday 8 November 2019 which saw around 80% of properties in the village affected it has obviously been a very difficult time for all concerned. We have seen a visit from The Prime Minister, HRH The Prince of Wales and also received coverage from lots of local and national media. We are proud as a community of how we have pulled together and supported each other and we will continue to do so. We are hugely grateful for the support shown to us by neighbouring villages and we are overwhelmed by the number of message of support received from across the country. There is still a long way to go before we are anything like back to normal. We need to persist with information as to how and why this happened and to work to prevent this happening again. St Cuthbert's Church, The Old Butcher's CafĂŠ and the Hare and Hounds have all done a tremendous job supporting the community and the essential/emergency workers who visited the village. Thoughts are very much with those residents who are still unable to return to their homes. Truffle Lodge reopened for business on Monday 6 January 2020. Our Day Spa package is from 10 am until 4 pm ÂŁ85 pp and includes a 2 course lunch, glass of fizz, a 60 mins treatment and full use of leisure facilities. Available 7 days a week. Our Twilight Spa package is from 6pm to 9 pm, ÂŁ45 pp and includes a 30 mins treatment glass of fizz and nibbles and full use of leisure facilities available Monday to Friday. Epworth and District Flower Club Christmas Workshop 2019 On arrival 25 ladies were greeted with most of the materials necessary to produce a wonderful Christmas creation, but there was a little business to be completed first. The meeting was formally opened with a welcome from Anne Everatt who thanked everyone for their support of the November Open Evening. That meeting had been financially successful enabling the Club to donate to Diabetes UK but it had also been much enjoyed by all who supported it. The programme secretary, Carolyn Drury, was delighted to report that Nick Grounds the demonstrator had thoroughly enjoyed the evening too and had actually written to thank the Club for the help received and the efficient organisation of the evening. The introduction to the workshop began. Sarah produced a very long-stemmed amaryllis in quite tight bud. She showed her audience how to chop the stem to a suitable length, then she slotted it onto a stick which she had positioned in some oasis in a plastic-lined decorative container. Sarah worked to cover the mechanics with looped aspidistra leaves, tight, small conifer branches, prickly holly twigs and some skimmia. She opened a gold lacey wired flower which produced some gasps of amazement and placed it to make a focal point below the amaryllis. Next were carefully place six red carnations, frosted berries, glittery red baubles which Sarah attached onto sticks, more gold leaves and Sarah concluded her arrangement with Christmassy ribbon artistically looped over and around. Job Done!! Then it was up to members to produce something similar! Sarah was on hand to assist and produce suitable tools and give gentle tips and hints. There was the usual buzz of conversation as 24 more similar, but individual, arrangements were created. Sarah manages to enable both skilled and unskilled flower arrangers to achieve a satisfying result in her workshops which encourages everyone. She also provides everything necessary which means the evening runs very smoothly. The messy bits were then cleared away and 25 lovely Christmas table arrangements provided a backdrop for the seasonal refreshments which were enjoyed by all. The social aspect of the evening continued later than usual and members eventually went out into a frosty night bearing an arrangement fit to start the season. The January meeting is a meal at The Epworth Tap and the next meeting is the A.G.M. which will be held at 7.30 in the Stephen Jones Community Hall in Haxey on Monday, 10th February 2020. Do come and join us.

Christmas Fayre 2019 Thank you to everyone that attended our annual Christmas Fayre and donated prizes leading up to the event. ‘The Isle of Axholme Lions’ visited with Santa, there was Mr & Mrs Pickwicks pop-up pizza van serving delicious pizzas throughout the evening and we had various Christmas hampers to win as well as all the usual games and tombola stalls in the hall. We raised an amazing £1404.85 for school funds. The Salvation Army Toy Appeal The English Department has been overwhelmed by the support we have received for the Salvation Army Toy Appeal. Students and staff have embraced it wholeheartedly. Today the Salvation Army collected 5 huge boxes of presents and your kind donations raised £67.70, which will help to provide food for families in need over the Christmas period. Your pre-loved donations of toys have been given to the Salvation Army charity shop to help raise even more funds. Thank you for your generosity. Charles Dickens would be proud to see the influence that his novella, A Christmas Carol, still has on our hearts at Christmas.
