Crowle and Ealand Garden Club news
The garden club has seen a flurry of recent activity with the Christmas meal and quiz evening which was enjoyed by many of our members on December 17th at Crowle community hall. Plans had been made to host a stall at the Crowle Lights switch on but unfortunately the stalls were cancelled due to the stormy conditions on the day, however, the Lights committee still did an amazing job of illuminating the area and many of the potential stall holders booked spaces at the Peatlands railway Christmas event. Voluntary organisations are such an asset to the community and volunteering is so beneficial to the individual and the local area. The committee has planned several trips for members only to take place in 2022 and are hoping that Covid will not prevent them from taking place. We are hoping to have a visit to see the snowdrops at Burton Agnes Hall in February, going to RHS Bridgnorth on May 8th and on September 18th exploring the wonderful displays at the Harrogate Autumn flower show. Additionally there is a summer holiday planned from June 24th to the 27th where we will be visiting gardens in the North East of England whilst staying at the Holiday Inn , Seaton Burn. The above activities may be restricted by the pandemic so please check with Louise Wright who is managing the bookings, her email is lmwright1209@gmail.com New members are always welcome to join the club with a fee of £3 per year for individuals and £4 for families, so if you would like to join please email us crowleandealandgardenclub78@gmail.com or phone Ann on 01724 712337. The garden club is working with the health and wellbeing group at Crowle community hall by advising on suitable heritage fruit trees that will be planted behind the hall for the benefit of the community. At the April coffee morning we have organised a paint pot decorating workshop where a local artist will be demonstrating ways of producing colourful pots for the plant pot trail that we have planned as part of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations. We also hope to include a plant sale at the May coffee morning. The ethos of the gardening club is to encourage people of all ages and abilities to grow plants, spend time outdoors and nurture wildlife and nature. Gardening is proven to be beneficial to our physical, mental and emotional wellbeing so perhaps you might give it a try? To advertise please call 01302 532676 or 07912 643010

We all need to work together for the good of our planet so harvesting rainwater, planting trees and flowers to feed and provide shelter for wildlife can save the planet one garden at a time. If you are buying compost, please use peat free products, make a small compost heap in your garden and recycle your fruit, green and vegetable waste to reduce the need to buy as much compost. Last autumn we presented bulbs to the Crowle primary schools that the pupils enjoyed planting and we hope to photograph the results of their efforts in Spring. The diary for the garden club is quite full already for 2022 and includes various speakers, visits, plant sale, and demonstrations. January 19th we have Julian Davies from Stockbridge House Experimental station speaking about peat free gardening, February 16th we have a quiz night, March 16th we have Nicola Collins from Gastronomie who will show us how to use garden produce to make preserves, April 2nd is the plant shop workshop, April 3rd we are invited to see the daffodils at a members farm, May will be the plant sale, June will be the Plant pot trail and summer holiday and July 16th and 17th will be the members open gardens. Follow us on Facebook to see more about our club activities.

Epworth Bowls Club Battle Green Epworth Spring is nearly upon us and Epworth Bowls Club is preparing for the new bowling season. We are a small, friendly and active club, founded in the 1930's and our season starts from 1st May to 30th August. Annual membership is £30 and social membership is £20. Our activities vary from league matches, internal competitions, visiting other clubs for friendly days out, have our own Gala Day and enjoy some very good Fun Days with our members. We also meet up socially every month during the winter. Bowling is not just for the elderly and we would like to welcome and encourage new members to join us, male and female, all age groups (children from age 12 years). Our roll-ups, which are run twice a week, have been well supported and we hope to do the same again this year in compliance with any COVID 19 rules and regulations which have been set out by Bowls England. This is a good opportunity to learn a new sport, make new friends, to exercise according to your own ability and all at a very reasonable cost. Social membership is also available if you prefer. Why not come and have a go, you will be made very welcome with bowls and instructions initially provided. Contact Liz or Sue who will be pleased to give you any further information you require. Swimming facilities for the disabled in Crowle I am a retired, disabled pensioner living in Crowle. I was very interested in hearing about the Crowle Leisure Centre and swimming pool which has been built behind the Axholme Academy, but didn’t think I would be able to use it as I swim very little because of my multiple sclerosis and cannot easily enter or leave the pool. A few months ago I had a replacement hip operation. I had nine weeks in various homes for rehabilitation, but I had very little physiotherapy and returned home to none. After three months I arranged for some private physiotherapy and was advised to try hydrotherapy. This I did in a private pool and it has been very enjoyable and successful. It is also very expensive and I was advised to try to find what facilities were available at local pools. We rang the Leisure Centre at the Academy and they were most helpful. I decided to try it, not really expecting to be able to access the pool easily or be able to move around well. We went at 9am one Thursday morning and were greeted by helpful, accommodating, friendly efficient staff. The facilities were spotlessly clean and well equipped. I used the disabled facilities to change and there was a chair in the room to take me to the pool. There was a hoist to lift me into and out of the pool and when I am in the water I am able to practice all the exercises the physiotherapist had shown to me. I have used the pool once a week for the past few weeks and been really happy. I had one session with the private physiotherapist and she was pleased with my current progress. I shall continue to see her occasionally and practice in the Crowle pool with my husband. I now have an NHS physiotherapist and am finding that very helpful out of the water. Hopefully, before too long I shall start to see an improvement, but now we have found the facilities available locally we shall continue to use them. The changing rooms and pool provision are excellent and most welcoming is the quality, friendliness and efficiency of the staff. Member of the public living in Crowle
