Chair of Governors wins a Community Champion Award We are delighted to announce that our Chair of Governors, Dawn Da Costa has won an Inspiration Award for her Services to School Governance. The North Lincolnshire Community Champion Awards took place at the Baths Hall in Scunthorpe on Thursday 23rd November.
Dawn said “What a phenomenal event! I am absolutely thrilled to have won. We do the job for the children and you don’t come into this role expecting to receive awards. I have been chair of governors at The Axholme Academy for a number of years and also worked across North Lincolnshire. ” Dawn Da Costa became a Parent Governor in 2011 and then progressed to be Chair of the Governing Board in 2013. She has been recognised as supporting strong and effective governance by Ofsted by creating a strong 'holding the school to account' culture and sharing the same aspiration for governance and the school to be outstanding.
Dawn has been recognised across the Local Authority as forward thinking and effective, with a commitment to her own continuing professional development. Most recently, in November she was invited by the National Governance Association to take part in a round table discussion to critically review and refresh a strategic planning document. The guidance is being co-produced by the Welcome Trust who hosted the meeting in their London office. Dawn commented ‘It was a great opportunity to influence governance on a national basis and I was thrilled to attend’.
Locally she was invited to join a Governor Conference Planning Group for the Sept 2017 conference, has taken part in 2 Governance Peer Review exercises at local schools and has presented good practice outcomes of the use of the '20 Questions' framework for Governor self-review She helped to set-up the Axholme North Governor Network and supports other Chairs in their development. Dawn had studied governance academically too and Graduated in July 2017 with a distinction in Masters in Management and Leadership from Loughborough University. Her Masters dissertation presented research outcomes on 'What Governors to Volunteer'. To advertise please motivates call 01302 532676 or 07912 643010 10
Axholme Abroad! 21 students from The Axholme Academy didn’t wait for the snow to fall in North Lincolnshire but went looking for it in Bavaria. The group, on a four day visit to Nuremberg and Munich packed a week’s worth of experience as they toured venues connected with the rise of the Nazi Party. Staying the first night in part of Nuremberg’s castle, the group visited the sites of the Nazi rallies and the 1945 War Crimes Trials before visiting the Christmas markets. The group moved to Munich and spent Saturday following the route of Hitler’s unsuccessful 1923 Putsch before doing some comparative shopping at the Munich Christmas Markets and eating in the famous Hofbrauahus. The final day was spent at the Dachau Concentration Camp. Richard Thorpe, Head of Humanities, said ‘You can’t beat seeing where History happened to get a grasp of how it all fit together. We also wanted our students to experience modern Germany – the snow was a bonus.
