Editors Letter.... "Happy New Year! "That greeting will be said and heard for at least the first couple of weeks as a new year gets under way. Traditions of the season include the making of New Year’s resolutions. Maybe you will be making one, like myself! The battle of the bulge yet again, to lose those extra pounds ready for the holiday season ahead of us. I would like to start the New Year by thanking Mr Tony Catherall. Tony has produced the history articles for The Epworth and Belton Arrow for nine months, with many more to follow. Tony has put many hours in for me to produce these articles and all this effort is much appreciated by myself and hopefully my readers.

Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust Pueblos, petroglyphs and other things. The January meeting of the Isle of Axholme group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust will take place on Thursday January 7th when we will be having an illustrated talk on Pueblos, petroglyphs and other things by Allan Rowsell. Allan spent several weeks travelling around various states in the south west of America and has taken some wonderful photographs of the area showing its past and present. Allan is chairman of the local camera club and is a very good photographer so these images, along with many stories of the people and places he encountered on the way mean that we are in for a great evening.
Members Photographic Evening The February meeting of the Isle of Axholme group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust will take place on Thursday February 5th when we will be having our annual members slide, digital or print photographic evening. This has always proved to be a very popular evening in the past because we have a wide variety of subjects, not just natural history. Members bring along photographs of anything they think may be of interest to the group. The photographs can be in any form as we have both slide and digital projectors. It is helpful if we know in advance who is bringing some photographs so that we can arrange them in order and set up the appropriate equipment, just give Geoff a ring. Do come along and join us, if it‘s like past years you will have a great evening. Our meetings are open to anyone; you don‘t have to be a Trust member. We meet on the first Thursday of the month from October to May at the new hall at the rear of Haxey Methodist Chapel on Low Street starting at 7.30pm. There is a small admission charge of £1 and there is a raffle and refreshments. Bird food is always on sale at the meetings as well as at Geoff‘s house in Belton. For further information about the local Trust group and their meetings please contact Geoff or Chris Trinder on 01427 872051. We look forward to welcoming all regular members and new visitors.

HAPPY NEW YEAR from St Oswald‘s Church Crowle We are looking forward to the New Year because we have a great plans for reordering our Church. Why are we bothering about modernising our Church? Well there are three reasons. We are doing it for ourselves – we really need to bring our building into the 21 st century. We are doing it for you – so we have a fine building to invite you to for baptisms, weddings, funerals and for community use. But we are doing it mainly for the glory of God. Back in the Old Testament, Solomon built a temple in which to worship God and it was the best money could buy. The glory of the Lord settled on the temple when it was consecrated. Worship has been taking place in St Oswald‘s Church for centuries and the whole fabric of the building is saturated with the prayers of faithful followers of Jesus Christ. We need our building not just for worship but all sorts of activities and that means we need new heating, a toilet, kitchen facilities and disabled access – all done discreetly, not taking away the ambience of the place.
Furniture Repairs Loose or Broken joints to tables & chairs
All types of repairs to tables, sideboards, wall units All wooden furniture repaired, re-polishing, replacement of broken springs to settee and chairs IF IT’S BROKEN OR DAMAGED, IT CAN BE REPAIRED
Please come and see us as we travel this path together – every Sunday at 9.30am – and at social events as we gather funds to make the project possible in its entirety. Oh yes, it‘s going to be a fantastic New Year!

There has been a spate of burglaries to mobile homes on the leisure park at Crowle. All owners have been contacted and at present enquiries are still continuing to identify the offender(s). The Neighbourhood team are still receiving information regarding drugs being used in the area and as a result a female has been dealt with for possession of cannabis at Crowle. Please if you have any information regarding illegal drug use do not hesitate to contact your local officers. A member of the press joined Pc Godley and his staff on patrol during the evening of Bonefire Night. This was to get an in-sight into calls for service and what officers had to deal with during the evening. Also at this time of year just a reminder to motorists to drive carefully as the frosty weather is now with us. It is the festive season but be aware extra police patrols are out and about in the area to deal with motorists who decide to have one drink too many. Please do not put yourself and your passengers at risk by drinking and driving. You can contact Humberside Police on 0845 60 60 222 for non-emergency calls. If you would like to give information anonymously, then please contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or on line via their website and you may be eligible for a cash reward. Working with Pc Graham Godley are your Police Community Support Officers Paul Fearon and Wendy Frear who regularly patrols the North Ward area of the Isle and will be happy to discuss any community issues with you. Please feel free to stop and speak with them or alternatively contact either of us via 0845 60 60 222 or by e-mail graham.godley, paul.fearon or wendy.frear @humberside.pnn.police.uk. The police station at Epworth provides a front counter service on Mondays and Thursdays, between 9am and 3pm. There is also a Police Surgery held on the first Monday of each month at the Crowle Hub High Street Crowle between 2.00pm and 3.00pm. The next two surgeries are on Monday 4th January and Monday 1st February 2010. The date and location for the next Neighbourhood Action Team Meeting will be set at the midDecember meeting
Thank you Graham

With obesity on the rise, there has never been a more important time to take a look at our lifestyles and that of our children‘s. It is a fact that children copy what they see their parents do. With this in mind, shouldn‘t we aim to set a good example of a healthy lifestyle to our children? There are so many good reasons why we should take regular exercise and eat a sensible and balanced diet. Exercise can be fun. It need not mean endless hours on a treadmill in a busy gym environment, nor does it mean pounding the streets every night trying to lose weight. The key is to find activities and exercises that you enjoy and that you can fit into your life on a regular basis. Anyone can exercise no matter what they weigh, how they look or their lifestyle. All it takes is a little planning, some motivation, some direction and off you go! Here are just a few very important reasons why you should take regular exercise... 1 Regular exercise releases ‗feel good‘ endorphins that make you feel great! 2 Regular exercise helps lower high blood pressure 3 Regular exercise helps lower cholesterol 4 Regular exercise will significantly lower your chances of suffering from obesity, diabetes, hypertension, some cancers and depression. 5 Regular exercise increases your body‘s ability to burn fat. 6 Regular exercise increases lung capacity and efficiency helping to make day to day activities much easier to cope with. 7 Regular exercise helps to build lean muscle and increase bone density reducing the chances of suffering from osteoporosis. 8Regular exercise helps to shape and tone your body giving you a good posture and a healthy shape. 9 Exercise is used in the fight against depression because of its mood enhancing properties. 10 Regular exercise helps with weight control – people who exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet are much more likely to lose weight AND maintain a healthy weight and body shape. So, the question should be “ Is there a reason NOT to exercise?” I think we all know that answer to that one. For many people, the problem is they do not know where to start. That is where Lifestyle Matters can help. Lifestyle Matters Personal Training offers friendly, professional, local personal training that fits into your life and delivers long term results. I will work with you on a one to one basis providing the expertise and motivation you need to get started and keep going! No matter what your level of fitness or time available, you can have the satisfaction of achieving your personal goals in the most efficient way and really see the difference. I also teach Boxercise classes on the Isle. Boxercise is an excellent all over body workout that improves strength, speed, agility, burns calories AND shapes and tones the body. It is fun and challenging. Classes are on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, but booking is essential so give me a call!

Lawn care in Autumn/Winter Moss Moss loves a cold and wet environment and therefore winter is its favourite time of year. This is the time when moss will spore and spread to form a thick spongy blanket in your lawn which can choke the grass. Now is the time to be taking action against it but when moss is in your lawn it can require more than just the application of a moss treatment to remove it. A moss treatment will stop the condition from deteriorating but dead moss will stay in your lawn and become a foundation for further moss in the future. You need to take action against the causes of moss, one of which is thatch that has developed in your lawn. Thatch is a blanket of dead grass and other decaying matter, of which dead moss becomes a part, that prevent essential air, water and nutrients from reaching the grass plant. You need to get that rake out again, but a hand or electric rake may not be robust enough to shift it. Of course nothing clears thatch as effectively as a professional scarifier which uses blades to remove the thatch and does a significantly more rigorous and thorough job. Compaction and Sub Surface Thatch Over time, and quite quickly where there is regular foot traffic, a lawn will become compacted. A compacted lawn struggles to dissipate water from its surface which encourages moss to grow, especially in the autumn/winter. This, along with sub surface thatch, again forms a barrier to air, water and nutrients affecting the growth and health of the grass. Hollow Tine aeration can correct this by removing thousands of cores which relieves compaction, and thins thatch.

Burringham and Snaith Fun Run We have enjoyed two Sunday morning Cross Country races, one in October at Burringham and one last Sunday at Snaith School. 11 pupils competed, some for the first time and all did very well. Thomas Duke won the fun run in Burringham with Hayden Murrary, Harry Sothern and Kieran Sycamore finishing well up the field. A cold, windy morning in Snaith did not hamper our elite runners in the 1.25 mile race. The team were up against athletes from Beverley, Goole and Hull. Once again they all performed well and put in some personal best performances. Olivia Whittingham was our first girl home in an impressive 4th place and Eve Richards 6th. Thomas Duke finished in 2nd place, Hayden Murray pushed hard and came in a brilliant 6th place, with Kieran Sycamore in 7th. Richard Fox and Connor Rogers ran hard and well in their first Sunday race—thanks guys, I‘ve got your names down for the next one!!. Cross Country practice every Friday 3.30-4.30, Yr2-6, please collect a letter from Mrs Haynes in the office.

The Isle of Axholme
Where You Live
Your Local History
Adapted by Anthony Catherall
PRE HISTORIC MAN IN THE ISLE OF AXHOLME There is no evidence to suggest that the Isle of Axholme was settled by Neolithic man (the first farmer) despite a number of archaeological finds at Scunthorpe. The first suggestion of early settlement of the area is provided by the number of Bronze Age man finds. These early inhabitants started ‘invading’ England about 1800 B.C. A particular branch of these people is called the ‘Beaker’ people so named after their pottery. They came in boats across the North Sea pushing into Eastern England up the rivers. In our particular case the Humber and the Trent. They were a great trading people as well as being rather belligerent. These people were the first to use worked metal. They also used flint and stone tools. The standard evidence of the Bronze Age people is around the barrow (burial chamber). None have been found in the Isle of Axholme. Despite this it is probable that some settlement existed in the Isle of Axholme during the Bronze Age because of the amount of archaeological finds of bronze and other implements from this age are: Find Bronze Spearhead “ “ “ “ Bronze Rapier Palstave (type of axe) “ “ Gold Torc Flint Axes Stone Axes “ “ Axe Hammer “ “
Where found Haxey (Now British Museum) Crowle Gunthorpe Crowle Moors Butterwick Crowle Santoft Low Burnham (now British Museum) Belton (now Scunthorpe Museum) Haxey 6. (now Lincoln Museum) Wroot 1 (now Lincoln Museum) Epworth Haxey The appearance of Bronze, gold, stone and flint in the Isle of Axholme obviously suggests trade as none of these materials are found naturally in the Isle. It is thought that the gold may have come from the Wicklow Mountains in Ireland via Wesse (Dorset Areas). About 300 B.C. Britain was invaded by various iron using peoples, thus the Iron Age man. There are no finds in the Isle relating to the Iron Age, but obviously Iron tools must have spread to the Isle at sometime. The period up until the Roman invasion is rather confused and rather lacking in evidence. By Roman time the River Trent was the rough dividing line between the vaguely established British tribes of the Coritani and Brigantes. The isolation of the Isle of Axholme and relative backwardness seems about this time to be taking shape. BACK TO THE PAST FOR EPWORTH OLD RECTORY Imaginative plans to restore one of North Lincolnshire‘s most highly popular tourist attractions - to how it looked when first built 300 years ago - have been announced. They are for the Old Rectory in Epworth, which was built in 1709, and as a museum now attracts visitors from around the world - as it was the birthplace of John and Charles Wesley, the founders of the Methodist Church. Epworth‘s Old Rectory has submitted an application for listed building consent and planning permission to North Lincolnshire Council to carry out the work, which is intended to open up the entire house to how it would have looked in 1716. The outcome of the planning application will be known in mid-January 2010. ―This is a very exciting time for The Old Rectory,‖ said curator Claire Potter. ―If everything we have planned is approved we‘ll have a visitors‘ attraction second to none,‖ she added. The plans call for current visitor facilities will be moved out of the Old Rectory into a brand new purpose built visitors‘ centre, containing the museum shop, a new café, and other facilities. Then the Old Rectory will be restored to how it might have been around the year 1716. Part of the plans are to improve access with ramps to the entrances and a lift to enable everyone to see all three floors of the elegant Queen Anne house which contains such a rich history. Many rooms will be returned to how they would have been when the Wesley family lived at the Rectory with period furniture, furnishings and artefacts, which will tell the stories of their lives. The recent discovery of early 18th century wallpaper has generated much excitement and it is planned to recreate the wallpaper in the room where it was found. There will also be new spaces for changing exhibitions so that visitors will be able to see more of the items in the museum collection. The new visitor centre will also open into a proposed new orchard, containing tree species, which were known in the early 18th century, and the car park will be redesigned and extended. The Trustees of Epworth‘s Old Rectory have consulted widely prior to the submission of the planning application and are hopeful of a positive result. Anyone who would like to become involved with the Old Rectory, or if they would like more information, please can visit its website at www.epwortholdrectory.org.uk or telephone 01427 872268.

The Ealand Academy of Performing Arts The Ealand Academy has gone from strength to strength with this year being its strongest yet. In September the school were 1of 2 in the country to be asked to take part in the filming of the new film STREET DANCE THE MOVIE to be shot in 3d. The children travelled to London along with me and some of their parents where they filmed at Shepperton studios in London along with Flawless, Diversity and George Samson from Britain‘s Got talent. This was a fantastic opportunity for the children who were over the moon to be working with their idols doing something they love, giving them a huge burst of inspiration. The film will be released in Summer 2010 trailers are now being shown for it. In Competition this year the school has done phenomenally. Having Isabelle Nicholl- Marshall aged 5(at the time) winning the British Championship in Blackpool. Jake Fields Aged 13 recently won all his solos at the last competition winning his street solo, modern solo, tap solo, choreography solo, and gaining the trophy for best boy, highest mark of the competition, highest mark tap and street solos, modern championship winner, and a trophy for best choreographed routine., with many of the other children also having huge success. Including an Intermediate cabaret championship winner and runner up, A junior Championship runner up and 3 rd position and a juvenile cabaret championship 3rd position. We had a cabaret championship winner and runner up in Retford dance festival and 6 of the students gained a place in the bursary (the adjudicator picks their favourite 10 routines of the festival to re-dance) 7 of the students qualified for the All England Championships in Manchester which is a huge achievement . Ashleigh Ward Age 13 got to the final 20 out of 90 at the All England Championships held in Manchester. The school gained a 1st and 2nd place in their junior groups, a 2nd, 3rd and 4th in their Inter Groups and a 2nd and 3rd place in their Juvenile Groups including a best choreography award and a best performance award. The school had 100% pass rate in their exams they took in July and are currently working towards their biggest show yet, and a trip to perform at Disneyland Paris in May. To say I am proud of the students is a huge understatement. The kids are a fantastic bunch of children and are a huge credit to the school and their parents. They work hard and get the rewards. They are finally putting Crowle and Scunthorpe on the map in huge dancing events around the country, and the village should be very proud of their young people. We hold Classes in Crowle at the Pavillion on Godnow Road. We teach Ballet, Tap, Modern, Jazz, Acrobatics, Singing, Drama, Street Jazz, Disco and Break Dancing. We hold classes for 2 year olds to adult and also have boys classes. For more information please contact Crystal 07969290262 or email danzcrystal@hotmail.co.uk

REMEMBERING PAST LIVES Deborah M. Fish, M. Sc.
There was an air of excited curiosity as the group settled down comfortably, and started to drift into a more relaxed state. I was facilitating that particular workshop in South Africa. Over the next 20 minutes the group of men and women, of varied ages, connected with the energy and memories of a place in which each of them had lived before. Afterwards, with a peaceful sense of wonder at the experience they had just had, the participants described the sensations and information that had come spontaneously into their awareness. ―I was so agile and fit‖, one woman reiterated, ―and it was like I could smell the damp vegetation, as we tracked the caribou. We were preparing for the Alaskan winter…‖ she continued, incredulous at the connection between that region of the world and some of her values today. Seated beside her, a cheerful young woman was amused by the strong sense she had had of being a young boy on a palm-lined beach in Kenya. She had never had understood why coconut had evoked such strong reactions in this current lifetime, which now made sense to her as she remembered earlier events. A couple who had come to the workshop together, had each reconnected with different aspects of life in an ancient civilisation in which they had known each other. As that earlier relationship was a parent-child one, it helped explain some of their relationship dynamic this time, with one partner‘s tendency to be over-protective. And so the group sharing continued, as we moved around the room. Eastern religions typically include beliefs about reincarnation and karma. For many others, reincarnation forms part of their philosophy of life. Countless cases of reincarnation have been researched and verified. Dr Ian Stevenson‘s findings have been remarkable, especially with children in India. The lifetimes that come into conscious awareness at a workshop are usually appropriate for the relaxed and safe group setting, rather than being as intense as some individual past life sessions can be, when for healing purposes. Uncovering past life memories can add new dimensions in better understanding who you really are, your values, patterns of behaviour and underlying beliefs. That knowledge can also open up more empowering choices for the here and now. So how about dipping your toes into the waters of the past, and seeing what surfaces? Please see www.deborahfish.com under Events and Workshops for workshop details.

South Axholme Community School PTA co-hosted a fashion show with Posh Frocks of Epworth recently. The evening was opened by Street Beat of Belton. All the models were from the current Year 11 and included Prom, Evening and Cocktail dresses. Suits for the boys were on loan from Dapper Suits, and hair was styled by Salon 10, Epworth and body art was applied by Face2facekidz.co.uk. Hair demonstrations were given by Kat Heart. The pupils had chosen their outfits and had been rehearsing for a couple of weeks, all were very nervous but excited and took part with great enthusiasm. Comparing the evening was Alex Temperton and Adam Bramhald supervised the sound system. A raffle and refreshments were organised by the PTA.

Important Message for Axholme Camera Club members and visitors. The Audio Visual presentation meeting will now be on Tuesday January 5th to avoid Haxey Hood Day. Everyone is welcome to come to this evening of AVs, which is a celebration of members' work rather than a competition this year. David Neve, visiting judge from Brigg, found the entries for the 'Still Life' competition difficult to judge and awarded 6 prints the top mark of 20. Andy Kershaw, taking over as Competition Secretary, had two winning monochromes along with Judy Newton, and the colour section was won by Jan Neale, Judy Shirley and Harry Snow, proving there is no age limit to good quality photographic work, as Harry is an Honorary Life Member in his eighties. From West Yorkshire, Rodney and Helen Smith gave 'An Evening with a Difference' as Helen showed how she uses her photography to produce beautiful embroideries, boxes and zigzag books to display her pictures in different ways, while Rodney, as well as bringing some of his collection of cameras dating from the early 1900s, also brought some photographs from that period too. It was an interesting evening.

The January competition, subject 'People' is on the 20th, while on February 3rd Erica Oram returns to judge the 'Photographer of the Year' competition sponsored by TomDennis Imaging of Scunthorpe. Not to be missed is Geoff Trinder's presentation, 'Highlands and Islands' on Tuesday January 26th. Everyone is welcome to attend. As always, a small door charge £1.50 to include refreshments, 7.30pm at Haxey Church Hall.
Anyone interested in joining this friendly club, can just turn up at a meeting or speak to the Chairman, Allan Rowsell on 01427 752400.
