Axholme Academy hosted its annual Christmas Fayre once again on Wednesday 3rd December. There were lots of stalls including tombola's, cake stall, craft stalls and the ever popular golf. It was lovely to see such a great turn out of parents, teachers and students at the event. Mr Wayte (RE teacher) and Harry Sotheran, Year 11, raised £85.07 to get both of their beards shaved off. There was a Christmas cracker challenge where Luke Slaney took the biscuit when he ate the most in a minute winning £5 as a result! We managed to raise a fantastic £910.55 for school funds so thank you to those of you who supported the event.

Y7 Settling In Evening at Axholme Academy When your child leaves primary school and move onto secondary school, it can be a worrying time for both you and them. At The Axholme Academy we do everything that we can to make this transition as smooth as possible for children and our Y7 Settling In Evening allows us to reassure parents and carers that their child has settled in well or to address any issues at an early stage in their secondary education. Year 7 Settling In Evening is an informal opportunity for parents/carers to meet their child's teachers, look at the work that they have been doing and find out more about the Academy's expectations and policies. Parents/carers are encouraged to attend the evening with their child. In the hall we display work for all subjects which has been completed by year 7 students in their first half term at the academy. Parents/carers and their children can enjoy a refreshment whilst looking at the work and chatting to teachers about their child's performance in lessons. During the course of the evening presentations are run in the diner by the Vice Principal and Assistant Principal to ensure that parents are aware of the key policies and routines at the academy. Here is a selection of the comments which were made by parents at this year's Y7 Settling In Evening: "Very well presented and thought out." "It has been very informative and not too formal" "Name has settled in really well and is thoroughly enjoying being a student at The Axholme Academy"

Learning to Lead By: Flt Lt Docherty - 300 (Axholme) Squadron
Cadet Corporals Daniel Brady (14) and Bradley Cram (14), along with Cadet Owen Wheatley (15), all from Crowle Air Cadets, have recently completed their Junior Non-Commissioned Officer training course at South and West Yorkshire Wing Headquarters. The course aims to teach Junior and potential NCOs leadership, team working and communication skills.
The course focuses on developing the candidates’ abilities to lead a group and get things done, as well as team working skills, problem solving and communications. It is continually assessed and candidates leave the course with report, highlighting their strengths and also areas for them to develop in the future. It brings together cadets from all across South and West Yorkshire Wing (An area that also covers parts of East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire) and helps them develop their skills, as well as teaching them new skills and allowing them to meet other cadets from around the Wing and share experiences and ideas.
“All three Cadets did really well, the reports the Squadron received were very good” said Flying Officer V Docherty, 2nd in Command at Crowle Squadron. “All three showed a lot of potential and hopefully have learnt something from the course”. Training courses, such as this one, are just a few of the many opportunities Crowle Squadron offers to its members, both cadets and staff. Air Cadets is a youth organisation open to anyone aged 12-17. It is also open to those over 20 who wish to join as a staff and assist in the running of such events. If you are interested in finding out more about Air Cadets in Crowle visit us as www.crowleaircadets.co.uk

Crowle Methodist Church was packed on Sunday 16th November with more than 110 people turning up to celebrate the chapel’s 110th anniversary. The big day was marked by a special ‘Songs of Praise’ service led by Minister, Rev Duncan MacBean featuring favourite hymns chosen by the congregation. Entertainment was provided by singer Gemma Baxter from Hibaldstow accompanied by organist Michael Bradbury from Epworth. A massive iced birthday cake large enough to feed at least 110 people was enjoyed by the visitors as part of the complimentary refreshments following the service. Visitors were also treated to a power-point presentation showing old pictures of the chapel and Crowle. Spokesperson Mabel Clift said: “We are delighted with the support shown by the local community and would like to thank everyone who came along to join in our special day.”

London Art Visit Recently a group of our art and music students went on a cultural trip to London. It was a very inspiring trip, and gave us an insight on real artwork. On the first day we arrived at midday, and enjoyed all you can eat pizza before going on a street art tour around Shoreditch. Seeing the artwork in person made us appreciate it more and realise how much effort was put into it. We learnt about different types of street art (from some being on decorated chewing gum on the pavement, to large pieces on the side of buildings) and the difference between graffiti and street art. After dropping our bags of at the hostel (which reminded us of Harry Potter!) we went to the National Portrait Gallery. We admired artwork from over the years, and one piece that caught our eye was ‘David’ by Sam Taylor-Wood as it was video footage of David Beckham sleeping which showed a more intimate side to him. Then we went to look at the poppies at the Tower of London - each poppy symbolised the loss of a soldier during WWI. This was a peaceful moment, which made us think about what the soldiers sacrificed for us and how thankful we are for them. The next day, we went to Frankie and Benny’s and enjoyed a full English breakfast. Then we went to the Tate Britain, which is another art gallery. This one featured more sculptures, and in our opinion more bizarre pieces; such as a video of a man jumping around in gorilla suit. Even though they were bizarre, it opened our eyes to a variety of different artwork. Afterwards we went to Camden and went to an all you can eat Chinese restaurant, which was a memorable experience…! Then we were allowed free time to explore Camden market. It was incredibly intense because of the amount of people, however the atmosphere was buzzing. The buildings weren’t ordinary, they were interesting- there was even a Dr Marten on the side of a shop! The trip then came to an end as we returned to Kings Cross station to get the train home. The trip was one we definitely won’t forget; it was full of culture and vibrancy.
