Happy New Year and welcome to the January issue of the Arrow! Great news from Gary the Secretary of the Crowle lights committee. “The Christmas lights switch on was fantastic and we raised over £1000 through donations, sponsorship and fund raising events on the night. The generosity of those attending and local businesses ensures we can continue to run this event and are able to invest in its future.”

News in from Brigley house lights; total raised so far as of 9th December stands at over £1,170!

A big thanks to everyone for smashing £1,000 after 10 days! If you didn't visit you can still donate at Justgiving.com/Brigleyhouse2018. You can also track fundraising and see updates on the just giving page too. Enjoy the read and please note the deadline for the February issue is Friday 11th January for distribution by the 3rd February. If you are interested in advertising or simply emailing me some community news, please be in touch before the date.

Folk Dancing in the Isle of Axholme – Isle Dance for Health Spring 2019

On Thursday January 3rd we start off the New Year with our annual Member's Photographic Evening. This is always a popular meeting, with members bringing a small number of images on any topic to share with the group. The photographs don't have to be about wildlife, they can be on anything of interest so we generally have a wide range of things to see. You don't have to be a brilliant photographer either so don't be shy, bring along your images on a memory stick and share your stories with us all. Everyone is welcome, you don't have to be a member of the Wildlife Trust. Entrance fee is £1 and there is a raffle and refreshments.

The folk dances run by local folk dance band Lys St Georges continue this spring as follows:

For further information about the local Trust group and their meetings please contact Tony Lee on 01427 753831 or Chris Trinder on 01427 872051. Details about the group are also on the Lincolnshire Trust web site under area groups.

Epworth and District Flower Club Open Meeting November 2018 Approximately 120 ladies sat expectantly in the hall of South Axholme Academy to see Andrew Grisewood present his demonstration “Unwrap the Season”. The audience was welcomed by Anne Everatt and an invitation to join the club or attend as a visitor was extended to all. Thanks were expressed to everyone who had helped with preparation and especially the member of staff of South Axholme Academy who had helped with technical logistics. Anne also reminded the audience that the proceeds would be going to the Alzheimer’s Society this year. Then, with a musical fanfare, Andrew Grisewood in his glittery shirt and accompanying bling was welcomed onto the bare stage. Olly his assistant was welcomed too. Andrew began with a frame holding two baskets with glittery branches and he added trailing ivy, cascading variegated holly, polystichum fern and Paddy’s pride foliage before inserting green chrysanthemums, red hypericum berries, champagne carnations and a deeper shade of cream carnations with a pink tinge. Andrew’s commentary included information about the song of the Twelve Days of Christmas and to complete his arrangement Andrew added some vintage appearance pears to suggest the partridge in a pear tree. As the musical accompaniment played Olly brought in a further similar arrangement making a stunning, opening, three tier display with a partridge apparently sitting on a nest on the top tier. Next Andrew used a basic looking plant pot with an erect substantial tree branch on which hung a large decorative red bell. To create a different tree shape Andrew showed the audience, with the help of Olly, how to attach small branches of ilex berries with brown cable ties. He proceeded to add a red velvet bow which he made so rapidly, imitation poinsettias, and robins. He theme was retro and he placed the arrangement beside an old fashioned street lamp and a model Santa. He even introduced the old fashioned Fairy liquid bottle on which many Santas have been produced, Blue Peter style. Much applause and more music….delightful. For the third arrangement Andrew had a large rectangular upright frame onto which were already attached three large branches of spruce sprayed to appear like snowflakes. There was also a roughly horizontal piece of driftwood. Around these mechanics Andrew positioned western hemlock branches, noble fern, senecio and white sprayed ivy leaves. Once positioned beneath another similar arrangement tiny lights were lit creating a very cool effect surmounted by a crescent of moon. Next was a large snow scene dome. Another reminder of the past. Andrew proceeded to use a length of rubus, some leather leaf fern and asparagus all of which were sprayed in tones of gold or white. For his finale Andrew produced a metal crown frame to represent the first of the three kings. He used beautiful Chinese pheasant feathers to produce a plume effect and continued to insert pale orange orchids and similar shaded anthurium flowers.

In January the Flower Club will have a seasonal meal at the Epworth Tap and the meeting on 11th February 2019 will be in the usual meeting place of the Stephen Jones Community Hall at 7.30pm and will be the A.G.M. when scrapbooks will be on display. We hope you feel encouraged to join us.

The Axholme Lurchers The Axholme Lurchers are a group of year 9 and 10 students who have raised funds to set up their own racing team. The company who provide the kit are called Greenpower and they run a 'Formula 24' racing series for 11-16 year olds to race electric cars at organised events across the country. The group have secured funding of ÂŁ2500 through the local council and SSE windfarm fund to buy the kit and have assembled the chassis and installed the electrics in an after school club. They are currently in the process of designing, testing and building the body work with the intention of entering a street race in Hull in April. As well as a range of STEM skills and learning, the project has helped them build on business and team working skills and they have organised and collaborated with local councillor, Julie Reed. The group will also be running an academy scheme for year 7s to get involved with the project. Andrew Percy MP visited the school on Friday to talk to the group about their progress and see the car in operation.

New Kings Order visit the academy Tuesday 4th December saw intrigue around The Axholme Academy. A boyband, called New Kings Order, who were on the X Factor in 2015 performed for our Key Stage 4 students. The band sang some songs initially and then went on to talk to our students about their experiences of mental health and online bullying issues. They were keen to express that we shouldn't bottle up any worries or concerns we have as they shouldn't become so big that we don't know who to or where to turn to. The band was extremely candid in their talk and were keen to get students to discuss with staff, adults, family and friends about any worries that they may have, however big or small. At the end of the talk they performed their new song called Basement Party. At the end of the session, students were given an opportunity to meet the lads and have their photographs taken with this rising band. The session was arranged to promote better mental health and well-being in the academy.
