Epworth Music Day 2020 Update This year’s Epworth Music Day falls on Saturday 20 June and we are starting to put the plan together to make it as much as success as it was last year. Once again we will be putting together a daytime programme across 10 outdoor stages – with indoor alternatives if it is wet – and 3 indoor venues. We’ll be organising an evening concert in St Andrew’s Church, as well as an evening ceilidh in the Imperial Hall. The Queen’s Head, The Old School Inn, and Jinksey’s Bar in the Red Lion will also be organising their own evening concerts. Performers Last June we attracted over 50 different groups of performers across a wide range of musical genres, and we hope to be able to provide a platform for a similar array of musical talent in 2020. We already have had expressions of interest from over 40 groups who want to play. If you would like to perform at Epworth Music Day 2020, we would like to hear from you as soon as possible. Road closures Next year we will be shutting some of the roads in the centre of Epworth to help make the area safer to stroll about in. The closures will be similar to the ones for the Christmas Lights. Stewards We would welcome anyone who would like to help to steward the event on the day, including some at the barriers at the road closures. Next step? So, put the date in your diary and spread the word! If you can help or want to join in please email peter.barnard@me.com or call Peter Barnard on 01427 873937.

The event will begin with an American contra-dance workshop when Janet Porter, event organiser, will teach some basic contra moves and easy contra dances. After a break for tea and biscuits there will be social and country dancing with an American twist to the rhythmic music of The Polka Dots Barn Dance Band. Janet said: “If you enjoy country dancing, barn dancing or ceilidhs, you’ll love American Contra Dancing. They all involve friendly social dancing, usually in set formation, and are lively, not too difficult and great fun. “ The dance event is aimed at adults or young people aged 10yrs or over who may have some experience of country dancing or just be very keen to learn and have fun. It starts at 2.30pm (doors 2.15) and finishes 5.30. Entry is £3 including tea and biscuits. Phone or text Janet on 07939 032224 for more info or to reserve a place, or just pay at the event.

It’s official, the region’s Best Countryside Wedding Venue 2020 as voted for and judged at The Wedding Industry Awards (TWIA) is Hirst Priory! The elegant Georgian manor house is tucked away in 18 acres of private grounds near Crowle on the Isle of Axholme. It was one of the region’s hidden and fading gems until managing director Hazel Wheatley began the five year journey to restore its regal charm and turn it in to a multi-award winning wedding venue. TWIA is the only regional and national client voted awards in the wedding industry. It was set up to recognise excellent wedding suppliers and to help anyone organising a wedding find the best suppliers. The latest Hirst Priory success was in the East Midlands region where they beat twelve high quality finalists coming from across Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Warwickshire. Hazel Wheatley said, “It is a stunning achievement to win this award against such strong competition. We owe a big thank you to our wonderful couples who were married with us during 2018/19 who voted for us and provided glowing testimonies to the judges of how we looked after them and how much they love Hirst Priory!” If you are looking for the very best venue for your big day spaces for 2020 weddings are limited but still available, as are 2021/22 dates. Your 2020 success starts with Slimming World If you would love to slim down and feel better about yourself this January, groups in and around Scunthorpe are inviting you to join them and start your success in 2020. Having celebrated 50 years in 2019, Slimming World want to start the next 50 years with a bang. This means everyone gets to feel the same feeling members experience every week in a slimming world group. One lady who is planning on making 2020 her year is Miss Slinky Ashby 2019, Janet. Janet is a sprightly 69 year old who joined Slimming World on 31st December 2017 after her medical team told her that she had a serious condition and needed an operation. Unfortunately the consultant wasn't happy to operate on Janet at her current weight. Her consultant wanted to monitor her condition, but knowing it was life threatening, Janet took the decision to walk into her local Slimming World group. Janet joined Yaddlethorpe on New Years Eve 2017 and lost 7lbs in her first two weeks. Not knowing what to expect Janet quickly learned that although she didn’t like cooking, Slimming World could still work for her. Her meals are often found in the freezers at Iceland which exclusively stocks the Slimming World range. All syn free and delicious. Janet's favourite meals include the Slimming World Chicken Risotto and Char Sui Pork. Alongside that she can indulge herself as a self confessed fruitaholic. Janet told her Slimming World consultant that she needed to lose weight because not only was this a very serious condition but a side effect of this was that her lungs essentially shut down, making it impossible for her to continue with her passion for singing. Janet said ‘Slimming World proved to be the answer. Now, I wasnt afraid to die. My son, my only child, had died a few years previously’ however ‘I wanted to sing again - something that’s impossible with collapsed lungs!’ With the support of her consultant and her group, (as well as a box of Slimming Worlds own fruit and nut hi fi bars every group night) Janet went on to lose 3 stone 8 lbs and in 2019 was able to have her life saving operation to correct Intrathoracic stomach caused by a giant hernia. Would her lungs recover after so long a collapse? They did! Now Janet is singing in the church choir and making her son proud of her. If anyone in Scunthorpe and its surrounding areas are thinking of embarking on a weight-loss journey this January, Slimming World is definitely the place to be – not only do they have five decades of experience helping millions of people to lose weight, but are set to make 2020 their best year yet. Janet's Slimming World Consultant and local manager, Tina says: “Whilst everyone has their sights set on Christmas festivities, at Slimming World we always joke that we look forward to January, because watching existing and new members achieving fabulous weight losses without feeling hungry or deprived never fails to make us feel privileged to be in our role. We know there is no such thing as a quick fix, but with our amazing Food Optimising plan and the fun and empathy found in our groups, we give our members the very best chance to lose weight and become healthy, change their lives and grow in confidence – without ever needing to feel hungry.” To find your nearest group check out slimmingworld.co.uk for details.
