Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust News Nightjar walk on Crowle Moor

On Friday July 4th Lincolnshire wildlife Trust are organising a joint evening walk with Market Rasen group looking for “Nightjars” on Crowle Moor. This will be led by Matthew Blissett (North West Lincolnshire Warden). Meet 7pm at the North Lincs. Council car park. Members and non-members welcome. Crowle Show has received a welcome boost for its forthcoming annual event in the form of a substantial grant from the ‘SSE Keadby Wind Farm Community Fund’. Show secretary John Shaw says: “The Show Committee are extremely grateful for SSE’s generosity. “This grant will allow us to purchase additional storage facilities and extra equipment for use in the show which will reduce our hiring costs and help sustain the show for future years.” This year’s event marking 117 years of Crowle Shows will be held on Sunday 20th July at the Show Field, Godnow Road, Crowle and promises to be a great day out for all. One of the Main Ring attractions will be ‘Flyin Ryan’ labelled as Britain’s No. 1 Motorcycle Stunt Team. “You may have seen stunt riders before but if you haven’t seen the Flying Ryan display prepare to be amazed. Their spectacular stunts are sure to thrill the crowds,” says John Shaw. More details are available on their website: www.flyinryan.co.uk The action-packed programme also includes a Polo demonstration whilst several bouts of ‘All-In Wrestling’ promise to add to the excitement. John Shaw reveals: “In addition we have a Tug-ofWar competition plus Brick Lifting contest so if you feel energetic why not enter? “There’s the popular comprehensive Horse Showing and Horse Jumping events, Cattle and Sheep showing, Classic and Vintage vehicles and a large Dog Show with more than 150 varieties of dogs on display. “A Funfair and Donkey Rides for the kids all add up to making it a great day out for all the family with something for everyone.” Main Ring events start at 9.30am with Flyin Ryan’s first show at 12noon. A free mini bus service will take visitors to and from the Show ground. The bus will pick up outside Nicholson’s Garage on Eastoft Road, the Marketplace, top of Godnow Road and the New Trent pub at Ealand. “So make it a date in your diary to support your local Crowle Show, Sunday 20th July,” adds Mr Shaw.

PGL Over the May Bank Holiday weekend The Axholme Academy descended on PGL at Caythorpe Court for our annual camping trip. 32 students and 4 staff spent three days abseiling off of towers, firing arrows at targets, and climbing a variety of obstacles. The High Ropes course proved once again to be one of the favourite L-R Sophie Russell, Miss Harrison & activities with several Aaron Smith students running around in the tree tops on numerous occasions. The weather, as is now traditional, was once again Elliot Raven- Smith slightly wet, but the students were not deterred as they worked together to climb the All Aboard tower in what can only be described as a monsoon! The weather brightened up towards the end of weekend as we enjoyed whizzing around on the quad bikes and leaping off the platform onto the trapeze. Once again a very successful and enjoyable weekend was had by all, looking forward to next years trip already! Y9 Girls become Rounders Champions Our Y9 girls rounders team recently became North Lincolnshire schools rounders champions! The tournament was held at Baysgarth school on Tuesday 3rd June. The girls made an excellent start beating St Bedes 8 – 2.5. A close encounter with South Axholme followed resulting in a 3-3.5 loss before they beat Fredrick Gough 6-2 to finish as group winners. The girls then played Brumby in the semi final where the girls found their batting form scoring 8 rounders from 21 balls to reach the final. Vale were the opponents in the final and it was they who batted first setting the Axholme Academy girls a target of 6 for victory which they achieved with 2 balls to spare. The team will now go on to represent North Lincolnshire in the Humber School Y9 Rounders Team Games at Hymers College on 11th July.

(Another) Gold for Crowle Cadet Following on from her success at the Inter Squadron athletics event, a Crowle Air Cadet has continued her winning form, claiming a further Gold and 2 Silver medals at the Inter Wing event and being asked to represent North Region at the Inter Region event. Cadet Mason, 14, was asked to represent South and West Yorkshire Wing in their up coming Inter Wing Athletics event, after winning her 100m, 200m races and doing well in the Long jump event. The Inter Wing event sees the best cadets from each of the Wings within North Region, which covers the entire North of England, compete in various athletic disciplines. Having won the 100m race and coming second in the 200m race and long jump event, Cadet Mason has now been asked to represent North Region in their up coming Inter Region event, which sees the best Air Cadets from the whole of the Country compete. Flying Officer Docherty, 2nd in command at the Squadron said “Cadet Mason did really well. To represent the Wing is a real achievement, to be asked to represent the Region is even better.” She continued “We all wish her the best of luck and hope she continues her winning form.” Athletics and sport are just a few of the many opportunities Crowle Squadron offers to its members, both cadets and staff. Air Cadets is a youth organisation open to anyone aged 13-17. CROWLE SHOT SWAN UPDATE Following the horrific incident last month whereby a swan was shot with an air rifle near Crowle on the Stainforth & Keadby Canal. Local Councillor, Paul McCartan, arranged a visit to the Yorkshire Swan Rescue Hospital that is caring for it to check how its doing and pass on the best wishes from the people of Crowle & Ealand and beyond that were outraged at such a barbaric act.. Paul said, "I am delighted to see that the swan is making a full recovering and to be able to thank the volunteers and rescue founder Dan Sidley for all the work they have done and do" Dan Sidley said, "Following surgery and stitches the swan is making a good recovery and we are due to be release it back home to its mate in a few weeks, we would ask that members of the public remain vigilant when out walking along the canal" Ward Cllr Trevor Barker said "It is good news that the rescuers have managed to save this swan, I hope we can give it a great welcome back and those that carried out this act can be brought to justice." Yorkshire Swan Rescue is completely voluntary and Paul continued "if anyone would like to thank the volunteers please make a donation, via their website (www.ysrh.co.uk) or get in touch and i will be happy to help.
