For their summer production this year, the Crowle Entertainers are working on a classical piece with their very own version of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales The performance will take place at the Crowle Community Hall on Saturday 2nd July at 7.30pm. Tickets are priced £5 and are available from Crowle Regen Shop, Crowle Tesco, Fancyland Fancy Dress shop in Epworth or on the door. Telephone 01724 711212 or 01427 873947 for enquiries. The play follows the adventures of a group of people who are flung together when their minibus bound for France breaks down, leaving them stranded in the back storeroom of a village hall somewhere near Canterbury. The characters are modern day equivalents of Chaucer’s pilgrims. There is a vicar, a young go-getter straight out of “The Apprentice”, a headmistress, a dodgy businessman, an aristocratic lady travelling with her son and her minder, a drunken football supporter, a local politician, a wealthy widow, two Oxford students and a nun. To while away the time they start reading aloud some of Chaucer’s stories… and then one bright spark has the idea of acting them out, with chaotic and hilarious consequences. Chaucer’s tales are presented in a brand new version written by Gillian Vickers, who has also directed the piece. The cast have devised their own characters and script. Chairman of the group, Angus Townley, says “Just like Chaucer’s original tales, our version is funny, bawdy, and outrageous. Don’t miss this performance… we can guarantee you will never have seen Chaucer performed quite like this!!” Parental advisory note: Please note that due to the saucy nature of Chaucer’s tales the group suggests an age limit of 13 and over.

Art Visit to The Deep On Tuesday 24th May 2016 (Mrs Childs Birthday) the Year 10 art classes visited the world renowned, Hull attraction, The Deep. The Deep is a large aquarium in the centre of Hull. The Deep consists of many different tanks, the largest tank being able to hold up to around 2, 5000,000 litres of water. The Deep has over 3500 fish which includes over 300 tropical fish. The Deep also houses areas for bugs and frogs as well as a big area for Penguins. The purpose of the visit was to look at shading and contours on different types of sea creatures, bugs and also shells and drawing from primary source. We started the day with a drawing workshop, where we studied different drawing techniques and tried to draw different types of shells, we had about an hour to complete these tasks and then we moved onto the aquarium itself. We spent most of the day walking around the aquarium studying different types of sea creatures. Amongst all the looking around and photography sessions we all relaxed in the cafÊ and had a bite to eat. We finished our day with as final look around the aquarium and then we all headed off to the gift shop. The gift shop was full of different things such as a toy and clothing area. Some students bought items from the gift shop and then were taken outside to where the mini-bus was. Even though it was Mrs Childs’ birthday she still bought all the students who went along a little gift from the gift-shop. It was a very good, educational, fun trip, which all the students enjoyed taking part in. Written by Katie Hollingsworth
Axholme Abroad Y7-9 of the Axholme Academy have just returned from four days in France and Belgium. Dodging the rain [it only rained when they were inside or on the coach] the students and staff packed a lot in to a short time. Among the sites visited were German and Commonwealth War graves and the Menin Gate; The walled old town of Boulogne; Boulogne University - for a French lesson; the market; several sweet factories and a hyper market. The students had plenty of opportunity to try their French - which mainly seemed to involve buying chocolate! Mr Thorpe

FREE Shakespearian night at Epworth A free and open-air production of William Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ will be taking place at Epworth’s Thurlow Memorial Playing Field in July. It will be performed by Illyria, a professional touring company who bring top quality and open-air theatre to the most prestigious and stunning locations throughout the UK and beyond. The performance will be taking place at the Memorial Playing Field on Sunday, July 10, and starts at 6.00pm. Those attending are advised to arrive early and to bring their own drinks and nibbles – plus clothing suitable for an ‘English summer’. In Illyria’s 25th anniversary season it is reprising the show it first performed in its very first year. Perennially popular, universally loved, the play follows four couples – three human and one fairy – whose passions are sorely tested when a troupe of amateur theatricals rehearse a play about a doomed love affair. Add in to the mix a heady brew of confusion, magic and mischief and you have the perfect comedy for a summer evening. Since the company’s first production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream in 1992 it has won no less than four international theatre awards, and still performs the entire play, uncut, with just five quick-changing, fastrunning actors who share all the roles between them. The company follows many Elizabethan performance practices but Illyria is proud to have left the policy of all-male casting back in the 16th century (where it belongs); instead and adopts a more up-todate policy of casting both male and female actors.

A lovely day in the Rectory gardens Despite some misgivings about the weather, the plant and craft fair at Epworth Old Rectory on Saturday June 4th, went ahead under clearing skies, and warm sunshine. Traders started arriving by 8 -20am and set up their stalls ready for the gates to be opened to the public at 10am. After a slow start the numbers picked up, along with the weather. A good day was had by all with the stall holders being served their tea and coffee by Robyn, one of our youngest volunteers, who then went on to join the musicians from Ep'th folk who serenaded us all day with a wide range of music. Even Shaun, one of the stall holders, deserted his pottery stall and joined in with the music on his mandolin, and a borrowed guitar. Colin, Pippa, Goff, Andrew and John were the other musicians all of whose services were given free of charge, and were greatly appreciated by everyone involved. The day couldn't have gone as well as it did without the services of all the volunteers who gave up their afternoon or morning, and for some, their whole day, to help out with all the jobs needing to be done. To all of them, and you all know who you are, a big thank you from Gillian Crawley, the Curator of the Old Rectory. The volunteers who do various jobs, from guiding visitors, serving in the gift shop, catering, working with the collection, gardening, and just being pairs of hands whenever and wherever needed, are the backbone of the workforce without whom the Old Rectory would not be able to function. Being a volunteer at the rectory also introduces anyone joining into a social group which extends beyond the rectory walls too. If you have a few hours a week to spare, come and see us, or call Gillian The Vikings are coming … on 01427 872268 to find out more about becoming one of us. You would be made Marauders or Settlers? welcome.

Official Opening of Methodist Women in Britain Exhibition at Epworth Old Rectory On Thursday May 19th 86 invited guests attended the official opening of the exhibition about the importance and work of women in Methodism. The guests came from all over the UK and some from overseas as well. On arrival at the Old Rectory they were invited to partake of fruit punch and biscuits, and were met by De Mowbray's Musicke playing a selection of medieval instruments and songs. Dr Jill Barber, vice president of conference cut the ribbon to officially open the exhibition which will run for the remainder of the season until the end of October. The collection is to remain housed at the Old Rectory after the exhibition is ended, which is a great addition to the already extensive collection of Wesley artefacts. The Old Rectory is open for the rest of the season to the end of October, on it's normal summer opening hours, and the exhibition will be available to view by all visitors who come to the house

Designer clothing on runway for hospice An array of designer labels will be showcased at a fashion show extravaganza in aid of Lindsey Lodge Hospice. A “Blast of Fashion” is a musical catwalk featuring designer labels such as Ted Baker, Karen Millen, Oasis, Planet and French Connection suitable for occasions such as a day at the races, going on cruises and holidays. In the spotlight will also be new bridal wear, teen clothing and vintage wear all at very reasonable prices. Organiser, Kaye Metcalf from All Dressed Up Lindsey Lodge Hospice charity shop, said: “We are super excited about this energetic, glittery event aimed at ladies looking for the perfect outfit this summer whether that might be for a night out or a holiday. “It won’t just be a fashion show but it will be a production where people will be able to enjoy a well-staged event with lots of exciting surprises to come!” Kaye hopes to raise over £2,000 from the fashion show which will be held on Friday, 22nd July at The Wortley House Hotel. All proceeds will go towards the hospice on Burringham Road in Scunthorpe which cares for local people with life-limiting illnesses and their families.
“The start of the show will literally be a “blast” of energy,” added Kay. “The local dance group Jopsox will be bursting on stage with a dazzling opening performance as well as modelling clothing too.” On the night people will be able to peruse around fashion-orientated stalls as well purchase a selection of hand-picked designer clothing. Kaye said that it’s “thanks to all the generous donations from the public” which has enabled the show to take place. She explained: “We are extremely grateful for all the donations we receive and it’s unbelievable some of the designer goods we get donated such as Gucci handbags and Karen Millen dresses which are worth a lot of money. “Our designer items are all available at All Dressed Up Lindsey Lodge Hospice charity shop in The Parishes at Scunthorpe.” A Blast of Fashion takes place on Friday, 22nd July at The Wortley House Hotel from 7pm to 10pm. Tickets are only £5 and all proceeds go towards the hospice. Tickets are available at All Dressed Up shop at The Parishes in Scunthorpe, by calling 0724 854824 or online at www.lindseylodgehospice.co.uk under the events section. Frothy fun for all the family Over 300 people have already signed up for a bubbbletatsic, frothy event called Dubble Bubble which is coming to North Lincolnshire for the first time! Tickets are proving popular for the 5km bubble course suitable for all the family in aid of Lindsey Lodge Hospice on Sunday, 24th July. The course will see cannons splurging a crazy 30 cubic metres of suds every minute which will create a carpet of one-meter-deep bubbles! Lindsey Lodge Hospice organiser, Andrew Hirst, said: “This is a completely unique event for the area and we are really excited about it. We are ecstatic with the amount of people signing up- so book your place early to avoid disappointment! “Dubble Bubble is all about having fun… so get your silly outfits ready such as tutus, wigs and over-sized sunglasses; you name it, we want you wearing it!” But that’s not all for this unique event… there will be zorb balls, a barbeque, bouncy castles, magic balloon modelling and even a DJ. Andrew said: “There will be plenty going on for every one of all ages. We think the zorb balls will be a hit and plus we are planning some extra surprises on the day! “We want everyone to have a fantastic time with all the family and help raise funds for the hospice on Burringham Road in Scunthorpe which cares for local people with life-limiting illnesses. “We are so thankful for the support we receive from the public because it costs over £400 a day for an in -patient to receive specialised care, £1,200 a month for life-saving oxygen and £5 for a patient’s hot, nutritional meal.” It takes place on Sunday, 24th July from 2pm-6pm at North Lindsey College in Scunthorpe. Tickets are priced £20 for adults 16 and upwards, £5 for children 5-15 years and under 5s are free. A family of four ticket is a discounted price of £35. This stunning boy is Nero, a 9 year old Malamute Cross Husky who is looking for a new home. Nero is a soft, gentle affectionate boy who has been fine with children, and is so well-behaved. Although ok with other dogs when he meets them, he needs to be the only dog in the home. No cats or small furries. Typical of his breed, he does like to spend a lot of time outdoors, so a garden or an outdoor run are essential.
Introducing... the tree bumblebee Bombus Hypnorum - this little chap with a white furry bottom is particularly active now, and a small number of them are probably doing figures of eight by your garage roof, or outside a nesting box on your apple trees....(My bee-keeper chums who are on the council’s list for honey bee swarm collection have been inundated with calls)... if you have them, don't worry. They are not interested in you, these are the drones on the lookout for a queen... they are relatively benign and if you try and move them you will kill them. Come the end of July the whole colony except the queens die off. The queens hibernate until March. Honey bees are the only bees to go through the winter as a colony. Have a look at British beekeepers website to help identify bees. http://www.bbka.org.uk/help/do_you_have_a_swarm.php If you ring the council with a problem about bees they will give you the phone number of one of the members of Doncaster Beekeepers association. They get a lot of calls, and if it is a genuine swarm of honey bees will be happy to help as long as they aren’t somewhere inaccessible like a chimney or at the top of an enormous tree. The council ( because of the cuts) have no one to deal with bees now. So please take some time and properly identify your bees before making that phone call. Bumble bees are a protected species. They will not sting you unless they feel you are about to threaten their colony. You can follow them around and even let them walk on your hands. Enjoy them!
