At the meeting held in May members began with a welcome and the singing of Jerusalem. A presentation of the Resolution to be put forward at the NFWI Annual Meeting to be held in the Royal Albert Hall was discussed, followed by updates from the secretary and the treasurer. There was also an update on the proposed outings and some other related information. The branch has quite an active social calendar which is organised by two or three members. It was noted that a letter of thanks had been received from the food bank as members have been donating items each month this year.

In July Martin Lamb will be welcomed as he presents an evening on Yorkshire Edible Flowers. That meeting will be held on Wednesday, 17th at The Reindeer Inn, Sandtoft beginning at 6.45pm as usual.

The evening continued with a “Getting to know you” session. Members talked to someone they didn’t know, seated close by, and then imparted knowledge gained to the group. Each of the four tables had a speaker and members enjoyed learning about each other. Further social activity was then provided by a Beetle Drive. Much hilarity and puzzlement ensued. How could someone have completed a beetle while others hadn’t started?

Two winners were presented with prizes for the highest scores and a wooden spoon awarded to the member with the lowest score. The light, entertaining, social evening was concluded with the raffle prize being won and refreshments.

We are open to visitors and new members. We meet at the time stated above on the third Wednesday of each month. Further information may be gained from the website www.highlevelswi.co.uk

New initiative to pursue offenders on motorbikes

On Wednesday 22 May, we launched our new force-wide proactive initiative, Operation Yokohama, with the aim to target offenders who use motorbikes to commit crimes across our region.

Officers from our Roads Policing team have undertaken further training in advanced off-road tactics which will allow them to pursue offenders who use motorbikes to deliberately escape officers and avoid arrest.

They will focus on criminal hotspot locations across our force area and will utilise equipment, like stingers, with the new specialist motorbikes for the operation as part of our commitment to tackling criminals using our roads as part of their offending.

With support from the wider Roads Policing team, the specially trained officers will have the skills to pursue offenders in an effort to reduce criminal use of motorbikes across Humberside.

The new motorbikes which the team will be operating on can be ridden on public roads or off-road, which will allow the team to continue with a pursuit into off-road areas.

Inspector John Rickells from our Roads Policing Unit said: “I am really pleased to see the launch of Op Yokohama, as it will help to keep our communities safe, and especially our roads from criminals who use motorbikes to facilitate their offending.

“Using motorbikes to evade officers often leads to dangerous situations for other road users, and that’s why it is important for us to be proactive in taking these offenders off our roads.

“As part of the operation, officers have received further training which will allow them to pursue offenders on motorbikes and do all that they can to ensure prompt arrest and prevent further crime being committed.

“Officers from the team will be working closely with officers involved with Operation Yellowfin to share information across teams, to ensure resources are targeted effectively, as well as taking part in days of action to tackle high harm offenders.

“They will also be providing reassurance to the public by being visible in locations which we receive the most reports about.

“By working with other departments across the force, the team will be able to disrupt crime across our force area whilst also taking part in preventative work, like community engagement.

“There is no place for crime in Humberside, and we will do everything we can to make sure that those who engage in such behaviour are put before the courts.

“We would always ask that anyone who may have concerns, or information about crime related to motorbikes to please contact us on our non-emergency number 101, or by calling 999 in an emergency. If you would like to report information anonymously, you can call independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

125th Crowle Show on Sunday July 21st 2024

This years show is at the new site on the opposite side of Godnow Road in a larger field so we are trying to provide more activities to fill the space.

As a committee we aim to provide something for all ages to enjoy. The attractions will include the Mighty Smith show where he will be pulling a tractor and organising the Tug of War challenge so we are hoping that pubs and clubs from across the Isle will enter a team. The Birds of prey will be attending and if the weather conditions are good we hope to see some aerial action from these sleek predators.

In the marquees there will be craft stalls, art exhibits from the local schools and a Produce show with a variety of classes. Perhaps you have something that you could enter?

There will be a variety of Trade stands selling a wide range of articles for pets and humans alike

The Food court offers a variety of tasty choices, and you can enjoy your food and drink while listening to the wide range of music that we have on offer from local bands and singers.

We have Vintage cars, trucks and tractors for visitors to see, as well as Fairground rides and children’s activities including a puppet show.

No show would be complete without a good selection of animals so we have Horses and ponies of all types striding out and hoping to win a rosette.

The Cattle and Sheep classes are open for entries now and the schedule is on the website

The Dog Show which is run by Helping Dog Paws charity is hoping for a record number of entries on the day so please bring your dogs along, there are classes for all from toy to giant breeds with lots of rosettes and goodies to be won.

Epworth and District Flower Club News

On a summer’s evening members met in St Andrew’s Church Epworth for an entertaining evening. Perhaps there were rather fewer members than sometimes but those who attended certainly enjoyed the evening. The original speaker had been involved in an accident so the programme was rearranged and a Supermarket Challenge was the theme. Four members had been provided with a sum of money to buy flowers of their choice and three volunteers had agreed to demonstrate.

One of the more mature and experienced members began. She astounded some of us as she created such a beautiful display with such confidence. Inserting fatsia leaves, photinia (otherwise known as red robin), cyanosis and pittosporum she then added the flowers with which she was provided. They included irises, peonies and a variety of chrysanthemums of different colours. She knew exactly where to place each flower and each piece of foliage. In no time at all she had created a wonderful, large arrangement.

A second member had a small box and quite a lot of foliage. She too created a very pretty arrangement, inserting foliage and flowers somehow into the small box container. This member brought along lily of the valley from her garden and a variety of foliage to create different textures. She added pink alstroemeria and deeper pink carnations and white roses. The result was quite delightful.

The third member, relatively new but talented, set about creating her first display, then she worked on a second. She used a basket for her first arrangement and a cylindrical container for her second.

Like the earlier

demonstrators she had roses and alstroemeria, peonies and a variety of chrysanthemums. After that there were still flowers left so two hand tied bunches were created. The evening was received with great admiration for the talents of the members who had volunteered and the beautiful raffle prizes they had created.

The evening continued with refreshments and an opportunity for a social chat.

Members were given a list of requirements for the June meeting which is to be a workshop delivered by Jo Smith, a professional demonstrator who has entertained the group in the past.

We meet in Saint Andrew’s Church Epworth on the second Monday of each month. The meetings begin at 7.30pm. We consider ourselves to be a friendly bunch and the only prerequisite is that you enjoy flowers. It is by no means expected that everyone has the skills demonstrated at the Supermarket Challenge.
