A special ‘Memorial Evening’ held at Crowle in recognition of a local ex-soldier attracted massive support raising a grand total of £755. Part of the proceeds paid for a suitably inscribed headstone in tribute to Mick Clarke who died from cancer earlier this year whilst the balance of £455 went to the Forces charity, SSAFA. The fund-raising musical evening complete with hog roast supper was held at Crowle’s Lock Stock & Barrel hotel and our picture shows pub landlady Helen Manning who presented the donation to SSAFA representative, Robin Oliver (also pictured). Former Royal Marine, Mick, with no family or funds, faced the possibility of a ‘pauper’s funeral’ until friends rallied around with the help of Scunthorpe independent funeral director Sue Maclean and SSAFA, to give him a military send-off. Now, following his death, a new fund has been set up by North Lincolnshire Council to support exveterans who die without an estate or family, whilst Mick’s friends are also petitioning the Government for a change in the law to ensure no other former soldiers face a pauper’s funeral. SSAFA’S North Lincolnshire branch holds an annual fundraising golf day at Holme Lane Golf Club and has decided to name the winning cup, the ‘Michael Clarke Memorial Trophy’. Spokesman Robin Oliver says: “The donation raised on Michael’s memorial evening is very much appreciated and can make all the difference to our servicemen and women and their families.” One of the event organisers, Sandra Briggs says: “We wish to thank Helen Manning for hosting the evening free of charge; the two musical groups, Jack Hammer and Son of a Milkman, for freely giving their time; Karl Britcliffe who provided the Hog Roast; and all who donated prizes and supported the event.”

The winners of last months competition for Doncaster Races and Status Quo are Karen Moore of Epworth and Steve Naylor of Sprotbrough. Thank you to everyone who entered.

Magna Kitchen Sink Show The Magna Science Adventure Centre came to The Axholme Academy to thrill our Year 7 students and also pupils in Year 5 & 6 from our partner primary schools. A presenter came to the academy on Thursday 24th April and took the children on a journey around the kitchen –using materials and objects of everyday life. The presenter demonstrated experiments such as Skewering balloons, burning money, Vinegar & Bicarbonate rocket, Fire Tornado, Pop rockets and many more. The Kitchen Sink Show provides loads of fun and lots of engaging science and the children help the presenter do the show ... there are also plenty of experiments which can be repeated at home, or at school. The show aims to motivate children to have a go, puzzle over problems and think through answers. The science department selected this event for our primary and secondary students as it uses inexpensive, household and waste equipment which would probably otherwise end up in the bin. As well as taking the children on a journey around the kitchen it opens up a world of science fun, some of which can be tried at home to actively engage our young people in the wonders of science early on in their education. It is with this in mind that we endeavour to inspire our young people to embrace science and look forward to a stimulating and creative curriculum from years 7 through to 11. In addition to our students, the event also demonstrates practical experiments that can be used across the curriculum by teachers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) lessons to ensure all students are actively engaged, participating and learning how science links to other subjects and shapes our everyday life. Principal, Joe Sellars, said 'It was great for our partner primary and our students to work together and experience just how exciting science can be. The children were thrilled and inspired by what they saw'.

French Spelling Bee In the autumn term, most of year 7 started learning to say and spell 50 French words for a French spelling bee. At the end of term, classes held competitions and the eight highest scoring students went through to the next round - with another 50 words to learn! In spring the eight students played for four places in the regional final and the winning team were Jamie Crane, Caitlin Young, Megan Hornsby and Lewis Vipurs. They then received a further 50 words to learn! On a sunny Thursday in March they went on the school minibus to Hull university, where the regional finals were to take place. The students had worked hard to get there, meeting at lunch time to practise their 150 words. In front of a crowded room they had to stand up and say and spell, in French, as many words as possible in a minute. The tension in the room was immense! All four students scored their personal best in the competition and were impressed by the amazing speed and accuracy of the winning students.

London visit On the 14th and 15th of February we visited central London with the Art department. We stayed at the Generator hostel and visited a number of galleries including the Saatchi, National Portrait Gallery and Tate Modern. We looked at contemporary works at the Saatchi, traditional works at the National Portrait Gallery and The Big Blue Cockerel, a temporary installation in Trafalgar square. We enjoyed several meals including an all you can eat buffet at Pizza Hut rounded off with a birthday cake for Niamh Worley and a wonderful meal at the hostel. We travelled everywhere on the London underground which was very exciting. It was an excellent trip and we have used our experience to inform our coursework. Written by Christy Harte

LEADER Programme 2015-2020 How can the LEADER Funding Programme help your rural community in 2015? The Northern Lincolnshire LEADER programme has come to an end after five positive years (2008 to 2013) of helping local rural communities, groups and organisations deliver regeneration projects and address local issues by providing £2.5m funding. Nearly 90 projects have been supported through the programme and there may be a new opportunity for rural communities to apply for LEADER funding in January 2015. The Northern Lincolnshire Local Action Group, the body who oversees the delivery of the funding, is currently putting together a strategy which will help us bring this money to the area; we would like the local rural community of Northern Lincolnshire to tell us how you think this funding should be invested. LEADER funding is made available through the Rural Development Programme for England and from 2015-2020 it will focus on supporting the creation of jobs and growth in rural economies. However, LEADER funding can also support community projects which play a part in supporting the local rural economy. If you would like to take part in this consultation and play your part in determining how this funding might be invested, please complete the online survey at www.northernlincolnshirelag.org. You can tell us your thoughts about the type of community projects you’d like to see in your local area in section 7 but please fill in any part of the survey that is of interest to you. The survey is open until Friday 13th June. For more information, or for help in completing the questionnaire, please contact the LEADER team on Philippa Kenyon, LEADER Coordinator at philippa.kenyon@northlincs.gov.uk Tel. 01724 297781 or Shalon Perkins, LEADER Support Officer at shalon.perkins@northlincs.gov.uk Tel. 01724 297768. LEADER funding is being made available through the Rural Development Programme for England, which is jointly funded by Defra and the European Union.

After the glorious blossom on the apple trees in the spring and the absence of late frosts once again, many trees have set a lot of fruitlets. These will grow on to become the fruit you harvest in the autumn. It always seems harsh to cut out your apples which could grow on to become fruit you could eat, but if you leave all the apples which are set to grow on it is unlikely that the tree will be able to sustain them all to grow into a decent size. Moreover, producing a large crop of apples saps the energy level of the tree and often leads to a smaller crop the next year. This is how some trees become biennial in their fruiting habit. So, it is generally not a good idea to allow the tree to have free rein and you need to give it a helping hand once more. You may have noticed that the tree sheds some of the small fruitlets anyway. It will do this in June – and is therefore called the ‘June drop’ – and early July. My experience is that this is often not enough and you need to take out the scissors or secateurs to do some light thinning. The time to do this is once the tree has naturally shed the excess fruit. Some trees can produce as many as five or six fruits per cluster at this stage in the year. Which ones should you take out? You should aim for two or at most three fruits in any cluster - for cooking apples, perhaps only one. Look first for any damaged or diseased fruit and remove them. You will notice that in any cluster one of the fruitlets is growing to be bigger than the others. This is the ‘king’ fruit. You will need to leave this – unless it is diseased or otherwise damaged – and take out some of the others. Other work to do this month is to have a look around your trees and check that there are no broken branches – perhaps from the wind or from birds. Broken branches which are left unmanaged will harbour disease and should be cleaned up. Take a sharp pair of secateurs or a saw and make a clean cut above the damage. Next month I will be returning to the subject of apple tree diseases which I started on last month. The Apple of Your Isle is a local organisation which encourages the growth and use of apples and pears. If you would like more information about our activities or would like to talk about your trees and fruit, please contact Peter Barnard on 01427 873937.

Athletic Success for 300 Squadron Crowle Air Cadets recently competed in the South and West Yorkshire Inter Squadron Athletics competition, held in Leeds. The event sees Air Cadets from all 33 South and West Yorkshire Wing Squadrons compete in various athletic disciplines, in 5 different age categories. The Crowle team won 2 Gold and 2 Silver medals, and were placed 6th in the Junior Boys and 5th in the Junior Girls categories, the 2 categories they entered. Cadet Mason won the Junior Girls 100m and 200m races, claiming Gold in both races. Cadet Jewison came second in the Boys Shot Put and Discus, claiming 2 Sliver medals. The other members of the team often finished in the top 6 for their events, scoring further points for the team, placing them high up the table. Cadet Mason will be asked to represent South and West Yorkshire Wing in the upcoming Inter Wing competition, which sees the 5 North of England Wings compete. Cadet Jewison may also be asked to represent the Wing, if the 1st place competitor can not attend. There is also a chance other cadets may also be asked to attend, due to their high placing within the competitions. Flying Officer Docherty, 2nd in command at the Squadron said “It has a fantastic effort by all those who attended. We were short on numbers due to injury and other events, but everyone gave it a go and surprised themselves at how well they all did” she continued “To have a cadet asked to represent the Wing for one event is fantastic, to be asked to represent the Wing for 2 is even better. And there is a chance others may also be asked” If you are interested in finding out more about Air Cadets in Crowle visit us as www.crowleaircadets.co.uk or come down to the Cadet Hut, Axholme Academy site on a Monday or Wednesday evening between 7pm and 9pm.

300 at Cosford March Two Crowle Air Cadets have recently completed a gruelling 50 mile challenge. Cadet Sergeant Daniel Wheatley (18), and Cadet Corporal Adam Taylor (17), both members of 300 (Axholme) Squadron, completed the Cosford Road March. Spanning two days, the event covers 50 miles and sees teams from all over the UK, Europe and the World take part. The teams complete 25 miles each day. The Air Cadets teams who take part do so in full military kit, just as the regular military do. The 2 Crowle Air Cadets were part of the South and West Yorkshire Wing team, made up of cadets from across the Wing and support staff. They both hope to be selected to be part of the Wing team travelling to the Netherlands later in the year to take part in the 100 mile, 4 day Nijmegen Road Marches. After the event Corporal Taylor said “We did it. I may have a few blisters now, but they were worth it”. Sergeant Whealtey continued “It was a great weekend and a great event. To complete it feels fantastic”.

Silver Success for Sergeant Wheatley A local Crowle Air Cadet has recently been awarded his Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award. The award is broken down into 4 different sections and requires a considerable amount of time and commitment from the participant to complete. Sergeant Daniel Wheatley, of 300 (Axholme) Squadron, had to undertake 2, separate, 3 day, self sufficient expeditions as part of his award. This required him to plan the expeditions, carry all equipment required and navigate up to 12 miles a day in remote countryside. His first expedition saw him negotiate the Yorkshire Wolds, while his send was completed in the Ripon area, between the Yorkshire Moors and Dales. The other sections of the award have seen him log his Triathlon and running training, assist the other cadets at the Squadron with Drill and developing their own skills and studying aeronautics to pass his classification exams. Flying Officer V Docherty, the Squadron DofE Officer said “It is great for Sergeant Wheatley to get his award. He has shown a lot of commitment and determination to achieve his award and it is good to see him get it.” She continued “He qualified for this Bronze award last year and continued with the hard work required to get his Silver. He has continued and is now looking to complete his Gold award, but this will not be until next year.” Participation in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award is one of the many opportunities 300 (Axholme) Squadron offers to its members, both cadets and staff. It is a youth organisation open to anyone aged 13-17 to join as a cadet. It is also open to those over 20 who wish to join as a staff and assist in the running of such activities and to participate and complete their own award.

Lindsey Lodge Hospice, will benefit from fund raising, with an exciting BIG new event being planned, for the Isle In June Inspired by three farmers, Geoff Fillingham, Stuart Lindley and Richard Thompson, they and their friends will take to their tractors from far and wide for the Isle's inaugural, Vintage Tractor Road Run. Quite common in North Notts., Lincolnshire and Holderness, 2014 has already seen eight events taken place to date with other charities being supported. Vintage Tractor Runs are gaining in popularity and are a fun day out for all says Geoff. Geoff continues, "we thank all the landowners for allowing us over their land" quoting to me "to fully appreciate a tractor run you'll need to be there to see it, but most of all to hear it".

This unique Isle event commences at the Mowbray Arms Epworth, (courtesy of Shaun Scally) on Sunday 22 June 2014. Bring the family along from 8.30 am to see these terrific machines warming up. After their bacon sandwiches and coffee, enthusiastic drivers will set off at 10am, taking in both roads and countryside through Isle Central.

Pictured above the organisers tractors lined up for a previous run.

Currently Stuart Lindley is working with our local police and other farmers for permission of use. The projected route being about 30 miles in length includes, Rectory Street, Blow Row, Burnham Road, Fieldside, Tunnel Pits, Haxey Carr, Turbary Road, The Nooking, High Burnham and on to lunch at the White Hart Owston Ferry, where landlord Pete Smith will serve welcome drinks and lunch around mid-day. The run continues along North Street, Trentside Road onto West Butterwick, Beltoft Road, Newlands Lane and Rectory Street back to the Mowbray Arms by about 3pm where a raffle supported by local businesses will take place, along with some well deserved refreshments The organisers are sure that the public will get behind them by supporting the event. Collection buckets will be available for donations, your kindness will be most appreciated. Come along everyone to see these wonderful machines in action.
