New York 2019 31 students and 5 staff from The Axholme Academy travelled to New York City during the Easter holidays for five days. The itinerary was jam packed with students visiting Grand Central Station, The Highline, Central Park Zoo, Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island, Ground Zero, Pizza & Bowling, Empire State Building and the Broadway Show ‘Book of Mormon’. The students enjoyed spending their dollars shopping in Times Square & Century 21 which was just a short walk from our hotel. The students also ate at Bubba Gump, Hard Rock Café and an ‘all you can eat breakfast’ in a deli near the hotel. The visit was an exciting cultural experience for the students taking in the hustle & bustle of city life, walking miles across different blocks around the city, seeing the famous yellow taxis and travelling on the subway to Battery Park. Everyone had a fantastic time and will have memories that will last a lifetime. Disneyland Paris Sports Tour 2019 On the 10th April 2019, 20 students along with 2 members of staff from The Axholme Academy travelled to Paris in order to take part in an International Netball and Football Festival. The trip has previously just been for Netball but we wanted to give our students the opportunity to represent the school in different sports this time. Students eagerly anticipated the trip, the netball, football and Disneyland aspects! Three jam-packed days were spent playing netball and football against other schools and clubs from across the country, taking part in coaching master classes and spending time in the Disneyland Paris parks. Day 1 and 5 were spent travelling along with another school, who we quickly made friends with, and owing to our well-timed arrival at Disney’s Davy Crockett Ranch, we even managed a quick visit to the swimming pool and arcade area on the first evening, something the girls really enjoyed! From day 2, the netball and football matches began and the effort put in by the girls, especially when facing challenging opponents, was extremely praiseworthy. The netball team played in the morning whilst the football team had free time in the Disney parks and in the afternoon the roles were reversed! The morning of Day 3 was spent by both teams in the parks where an immense amount of shopping was undertaken. In the afternoon the netball team were immersed in a coaching session where the students learnt different tactics for attacking, defending and shooting, alongside taking on certain challenges such as how far they could leap and how long they could hold a plank for. These tactics were invaluable for match play the following day. The football team had some more opponents to face in their next round of matches and put in some noteworthy performances. On Day 4 our netball team were put into a competition dependent on their playing record on Day 2, therefore they were playing against similarly matched teams and the games were much more exciting and well fought. The team worked extremely hard and what was evident was that the girls’ netballing ability and their skills as team players improved considerably throughout the course of the trip. One incredibly intense and exciting match even got taken into extra time! In the afternoon and evening the students were given some more time in the parks with both of the teams getting together for lunch at a traditional American Diner. That evening we were invited to a presentation evening, King Ludwig’s for the netball team and Planet Hollywood for the football team, where each of our teams managed to claim a trophy. This was an extremely successful trip and Mrs Winder and Miss Harrison would like to thank our students for their superb behaviour and participation throughout.
