Editors Letter.... Spring is in the air, or is it! At the time of me writing this editorial the weather forecast was still bitter cold and more threat of snow on the way. Did you know that Winter ends with March, and the arrival of Spring begins on the 20th March. March can feel either wintry or springy, with as many blustery days as mild sunny days; lets hope for the latter this Spring. Mothers Day, Sunday March 14th. Plenty of gifts to think about, a gift voucher from Posh Frocks, Scissor Sisters or Essentials of Beauty, flowers from Jackies Floral Designs based in the High Street Crowle, or a special meal at one of the local pubs advertised in this months issue of the Arrow. There is even a cream tea at Jonathon David's of Epworth. The choice is yours! Remember to shop local and support your local businesses.

News, News, News, News, News, News, News... North Isle of Axholme Photographic Competition 2010 An open photographic competition is being launched to promote tourism in the North Isle of Axholme. The area to the north of the M180 encompasses the towns and villages of Crowle & Ealand, Luddington, Eastoft, Keadby, Althorpe, Amcotts & Garthorpe. It is an area often overlooked by tourists but contains a wealth of heritage and natural interest to the visitor and local alike, including; · Crowle Moors – which as part of the Humberhead Peatlands NNR is the largest area of raised bog wilderness in lowland Britain and where one might see Nightjars, Marsh Harriers and numerous rare insects and plants. · Crowle Church and Stone – the church one of the oldest in the Isle of Axholme contains the Crowle Stone, a rare Saxon Cross shaft with a runic inscription possibly dating to the 8th or 9th century. The theme of the photographic competition is to illustrate what element of the North Isle of Axholme that has inspired you or might inspire visitors to explore this interesting area of North Lincolnshire, be it animal, vegetable or mineral. The competition will be divided into age classes and is open to all. The closing date for the competition is 31st May 2010. Full information including details of how to enter may be found at www.crowle.org/photocomp. The winners will be announced at the 113th Crowle Show in June.

The Isle of Axholme Family History Society was treated to a different sort of talk at their last meeting. Sue Grafton called her talk „Stitching up the Family‟. She brought with her three magnificent embroidered hangings. Each consisted of a 4 inch squares on a burgundy background denoting an aspect of her family history. For instance, a pair of fighting cocks commemorated a less respectable ancestor, while a magnificent ram‟s head indicated a farming branch. Similarly a group of people standing by a boat, ancestors who emigrated. The quality of the work was remarkable, and it had taken her ten years to complete the three hanging panels. It was difficult to believe she was not a professional embroiderer. Many questions were asked of her after her talk and members took advantage of the chance to inspect the hangings at close quarters. The next meeting is on March 25th when the speaker will be Angus Townley on‟ The Hind Family of Crowle. Meetings are held on the 4 th Thursday of the month except for August and December at the Methodist Schoolroom, High St. Epworth, at 7-30.
The Belton Autumn Club has enjoyed another successful year maintaining the membership and even gaining one or two new ones. The Club continues to meet in the Belton Playing Pavilion each Thursday afternoon from 2 pm until 4 pm. The membership fee is only £5 a year and anyone over 55 is welcome to come along. Members always a enjoy a variety of card games: some go for their scrabble whilst others like UNO. There is always a Raffle and a game of Bingo ends each session. A very enjoyable feature has been the monthly visits to the Mallard Inn for a three course lunch at only £5.25. Attempts to get an outing off the ground was not successful but there may well be other attempts in the future. The Club enjoyed their Christmas Lunch back in December but the bad weather meant that two meetings had to be cancelled.

Spring is now upon us and the grass is beginning to grow more quickly. Here Chris from GreenThumb offers some tips as we begin to think about that first cut of the year. Have your mower serviced Now is an ideal time to get your mower serviced and ready for the task ahead. Most importantly, the blade must be sharp and adjusted correctly. In general a blade should be changed or sharpened at least once per season. When cut with a sharp blade grass heals very quickly keeping it healthy and maintaining its lush green colour. A blunt or wrongly adjusted blade will bruise the grass making it susceptible to disease and will turn the tips brown leaving a discoloured lawn. Some mowing tips For the first cut raise the mower blades to just „top‟ the grass. Cutting too low will stress the grass and set it back just when you want to encourage it. Try not to cut more than one third of the total height of the grass plant in one go. Never cut your lawn less than 25mm (1 inch). Cutting the lawn very short does not prevent grass from growing quickly and it can encourage lawn diseases, moss and weed growth. Always try to remove grass clippings from the lawn – clippings encourage lawn thatch on which moss will thrive.

Current priorities that the Neighbourhood Team are concentrating on in the North Ward area are:Church Street Crowle – the team are continuing to work with the Youth Service, the Neighbourhood Watch Group and local residents to reduce the problems of youths causing a nuisance. Potts Lane, Crowle – with regards to the concerns about vehicle nuisance and antisocial behaviour of young drivers gathering PC1717 PCSO PCSO 7576 Paul at various locations in Crowle, the main Graham Godley Wendy Frear Fearon location was initially identified as Windsor Park car park off Godnow Road. This problem area has now been stopped by security chains being placed across the entrances to the playing field and patrols are now concentrating on Potts Lane car park. Station Road Keadby Street– The Parish Council requested that the parking at this location be monitored. The parking issues revolve around the school dropping off and collection times and concerns about child safety. This parking by parents dropping of and collecting their children is a problem at most of the schools on the Isle of Axholme and we ask that plenty of time is allowed for the school „run‟ and consideration be given to other road users and pedestrians so as to make these areas safe for the children. The Neighbourhood Team will patrol and monitor the above hotspot areas and any offences will be dealt with positively. The Friends of Manor Park have been successful in their application for funding towards a widespread survey of local needs to decide the future development of the Playing Fields off Johnson Lane. The fields have been left unattended for some time now and a fund/trust has been established in order to create a community wide facility for use by all ages of young people in the Crowle and Ealand area. The involvement of these young people and the wider community is paramount to the success of the project and the Fund hopes to include as many as possible in the development and planning stages. Working with Pc Graham Godley are your Police Community Support Officers Paul Fearon and Wendy Frear who regularly patrols the North Ward area of the Isle and will be happy to discuss any community issues with you. Please feel free to stop and speak with them or alternatively contact either of us via 0845 60 60 222 or by e-mail graham.godley, paul.fearon or wendy.frear @humberside.pnn.police.uk. The police station at Epworth provides a front counter service on Mondays and Thursdays, between 9am and 3pm. There is also a Police Surgery held on the first Monday of each month at the Crowle Hub High Street Crowle between 2.00pm and 3.00pm. The next surgeries are on Monday 1st March 2010 and Monday 5th April 2010.
The date and location for the next Neighbourhood Action Team Meeting will be held at Keadby School on Tuesday 16th March 2010.

DUST OFF THE DUSTERS WITH MOLLY MAID It‟s strange how this time of year triggers an urge to embark upon that most rigorous of activities - spring-cleaning! These days, this need not take up all your reserves of energy - unless of course you crave the satisfaction that comes from moving furniture and discovering for yourself how much dust and grime accumulates in those forgotten corners and crevices. Leisure time has replaced money as the symbol of success, and many householders are seeking a bit of help around the home so that they are free to get some well earned rest and spend time with their family doing the things they enjoy. Andy & Lynne Crewe owns‟ the local MOLLY MAID that cleans homes across the Doncaster area and explains the benefits in hiring a professional cleaning service. “MOLLY MAID does not only guarantee the satisfactory cleaning of your home, but is also a reliable and trustworthy organization. When you are handing over the key to your home, and perhaps the code of your burglar alarm, you want a company that is fully insured and has a safe secure system when dealing with multiple house keys.” Andy & Lynne have been operating in Doncaster for the last 2 years and MOLLY MAID UK celebrated their 25 th anniversary in 2009. As a result of their experience, and the thorough training that all of the maids are given, all of the teams are ready for a Spring Clean rush at this time of year. This means that a team of maids can work through the house surprisingly quickly and efficiently causing the minimum of disruption in the home. Of course if you want to give it a go yourself here are some tips from the domestic cleaning experts at MOLLY MAID: Limit your cleaning products to a quality window/glass cleaner, all-purpose cleaner, tile/grout cleaner and a toilet bowl cleaner. Apply the MOLLY MAID system on cleaning. Clean from the top of the house to the bottom and clean from top to bottom and from left to right in whatever room you are cleaning. This is the quickest and most efficient way to clean. Dust first vacuum second. That way any bits of dust or dirt will fall to the floor and be collected by the vacuum cleaner. Use a toothbrush for hard to reach areas in the bathroom and kitchen for example around the soap holder, taps and drain. Streaks on windows are unsightly and tricky to eliminate. When cleaning windows, wipe one side of the glass horizontally and the other side vertically. This way, when polishing out streaks, it will be easy to determine which side they are on.
For more hints and tips on cleaning your home or why you should choose MOLLY MAID visit www.mollymaid.co.uk Alternatively for a no obligation estimate please or contact Andy or Lynne on 01427 875566.

Johnson’s Lane Field Revamped! The turn of a new decade could well see a brighter future for the run down park site just off Johnson‟s Lane, Crowle. A group of willing volunteers are turning their efforts towards taking the area, now known as Manor Park, back to its former glory and are determined to make it a place the whole community can use. “The Park will be a space where all generations of Crowle can interact and enjoy the facilities,” said Oliver Saxon, “its important to us that there is something for everyone here and that is what makes this park different to the norm.” Indeed, the focus on the park being used all year round and by every sector of the community is key to the group‟s plans. The group are currently engaging in a consultation period with local community groups and plan to cap the consultation with a “Space Shaper” event in the Park on Saturday 20th March 2010. “The discussions we‟ve already had have lead to some exciting ideas and the Space Shaper will be an excellent chance for the people of Crowle to tell us what they want to see in their space,” Saxon continued, “as well as the survey and in keeping with the ethos of the park there will be other fun things do, so watch this space!” More of the old equipment has now been taken away from the park leaving a blank canvas for residents to put their ideas on to. Residents are encouraged to begin going down to the park now and having a think about what they would like to see there. As always, the Group actively encourage anybody willing to give some free time or their ideas to the movement to come along to their meetings.

The Isle of Axholme
Where You Live
Your Local History
Adapted by Anthony Catherall
THE SAXONS AND SCANDINAVIANS IN THE ISLE OF AXHOLME By the end of the 4th century the Roman Empire was under attack in Eastern Europe. Troops were withdrawn from exposed limbs of the Empire to defend the centre of the Empire. Roman soldiers finally left Britain in 410 A.D. thus leaving Britain unprotected against any invaders. Angles, Saxons, Jutes and Frisians from North Germany, Denmark and Holland had been raiding the east coast during the Roman occupation. Now the Romans had gone, the way was open for invasion and settlement by them. They used the waterways of eastern England for an easy passage into inner England. Many appear to have settled in the Isle of Axholme. The best evidence of this is prosettlement with the place name ending ”ton” meaning farmstead and “ham” meaning a homestead or village such as Burnham, Belton, Luddington and Owston Ferry. The name Axholme is derived from two Anglo-Saxon words Axel meaning town and holme meaning island. The name Epworth comes from the Saxon name Heapeurde with Heape meaning a small hill and urde meaning a farm. As the Anglo-Saxon settlement intensified so small kingdoms were set up. The Isle of Axholme was a frontier area between the Kingdoms of Northumbria to the north and Mercia to the south and the area has been described as “a common theatre of contention and bloodshed”. In 653 Penda, King of Mercia passed through the Isle on his way to invade Northumbria then ruled by Edwin. A great battle was fought at Hatfield where Edwin was routed and killed. Nine years later Penda again attacked Northumbria. This time King Oswald of Northumbria was killed. It seems possible that he actually died at Burnham. For connected with him is the story of the Holy Well. Afterwards the well was reputed to have healing properties and at annual feast times children and others were brought to be healed. The Churches at Crowle and Althorpe are dedicated to Oswald.

I love my Mum and Easter Eggs! My Mum and Dad live many miles away, but for many years I have sent my mother a special card on Mothers Day. Mothering Sunday, to give it the correct title, falls on 14th March. It used to be the day when those in service were free to go home to their mothers and their mother Church. Nowadays it has changed. We are changing too. We plan to hold family friendly worship at 10am in our changed building. Mum can have a bit of a lie in before the family brings her to Church to worship and receive some flowers. How has St Oswald‟s Church changed? We have had a kitchenette and toilet installed. Three weeks later, it‟s Easter Day. Worship at 4pm with tea! For many people, Easter is just a holiday of chocolate and a time to relax. That‟s great! We need time to rest. So why come to Church? There is a spiritual dimension to all of us and our spirits need refreshing just as much as our bodies. That is exactly what Jesus can do for us. He reaches the parts that other people cannot reach. He is a specialist in revival. He is present whenever we gather to worship. I invite you to come and discover just how much God loves you on Mothers Day and/or Easter Day. No pressure, no hassle. Just come along, enjoy the celebrations and be totally refreshed by our living God! The Psalmist wrote, “Taste and see that the Lord is good”. Rev Timothy Buckley Rector of St Oswald’s Church, Althorpe with Keadby Priest in Charge of the Crowle Group of Parishes

27 March 8.30pm? Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million homes and businesses turned their lights off for one hour to make their stand against climate change. Only a year later and Earth Hour had become a global sustainability movement with more than 50 million people across 35 countries participating. Global landmarks such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge, The CN Tower in Toronto, The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, and Rome’s Colosseum, all stood in darkness, as symbols of hope for a cause that grows more urgent by the hour. In March 2009, hundreds of millions of people took part in the third Earth Hour. Over 4000 cities in 88 countries officially switched off to pledge their support for the planet, making Earth Hour 2009 the world‟s largest global climate change initiative. Earth Hour 2010 takes place on Saturday 27 March at 8.30pm (local time) and is a global call to action to every individual, every business and every community throughout the world. It is a call to stand up, to take responsibility, to get involved and lead the way towards a sustainable future. Iconic buildings and landmarks from Europe to Asia to the Americas will stand in darkness. People across the world from all walks of life will turn off their lights and join together in celebration and contemplation of the one thing we all have in common – our planet. Let’s make 2010 the biggest Earth Hour yet !. It’s Showtime! Show the world what can be done. JUST SWITCH YOUR LIGHTS OFF FOR ONE HOUR AND LIGHT THE CANDLES ! The Narrowboat Experience and I can honestly say it was a special experience! Wanting something different for a birthday present, I decided to contact Pat and Jim for a gift for my husband, Eliot‟s birthday. Quite excited on the morning, but I must say a bit apprehensive, looking outside at the climate and thinking about the terrible weather forecast ahead. We packed our car with all the usual waterproofs and drove to Walkeringham. We were welcomed by Pat and Jim, who I must say felt like I‟d known for years, in a nice way of course! Moored at the bottom of their garden was „Beautiful Baby‟, their 60ft narrowboat; surrounded by stunning countryside, a haven for wildlife, at a glimpse we immediately saw woodpeckers, coots and a wide range of other fascinating wildlife. At this point the weather was kind, no sign of rain and a peep of blue sky ahead. On board, Pat took charge of the bacon butties, fantastic by the way, bacon cooked to perfection, along with a hot drink of coffee. We started on the journey ahead, towards Drakeholes for Sunday lunch. The trip would take approximately 2.5 hours. Eliot soon took charge of the boat, apparently he was a natural; typical! As the day progressed, Jim explained in full detail everything you should know about canal boating, what to do when approaching the locks, how to work the locks and of course covered all health and safety aspects. After all Jim is a qualified Helmsman Instructor, so you are in safe hands! I must say the morning spent cruising down the canal was superb; it was like being in your own world, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. On mooring at Drakeholes, we enjoyed Sunday Lunch at the White Swan, which was very good quality. After lunch, we made the return journey back to Walkeringham. On the last leg, I took charge of the boat; having had bad experiences previously on boating trips I was a bit nervous; I don‟t seem to have any sense of Narrowboat direction! But Jim was always there explaining and Experience Day guiding me through. on The Chesterfield In the end the weather was kind to us, only a couple of showers; that‟s the good old British Canal Take the tiller & weather for you! But I think whatever the learn the basics of weather, the company of Pat and Jim and the narrowboating & whole experience is second to none. working the locks or just relax & enjoy this If you want to surprise that special person in your life or just treat yourself give Pat a ring on 07771 795397 or email pat@jpbusinessservices.co.uk or visit their website www.narrowboatexperiencedays.co.uk

The South Yorkshire Charity Ploughing Match is being held on Sat 27th and Sun 28th March 2010. It is a charity event raising funds for the British National Ploughing Match being held in Lincoln next October. The event will be held at Lindholme (the old airfield behind Lindholme Prison) by kind permission of HM Prison Service Lindholme & Ken & David Chappell and over 100 ploughmen, including previous National, European and World Champions, are expected each day, with horses, vintage tractors and modern equipment. David Chappell is celebrating 50 years of competing in ploughing competitions by organising a weekend of events. He won his first contest in October1960 and has had 1st places every year since and has represented England at the World Contest on 3 occasions. At the contest, ploughmen must plough 1/2 acre in 4 hours, the judges will look for straight, level furrows with all the stubble buried to achieve a clean level seedbed for the next crop and all the trash buried and sealed firmly in to prevent the carry over of weeds and diseases. A well ploughed field needs less fertiliser, less chemicals and uses less fuel to achieve a better crop, than a poorly ploughed field. The plough was invented 4000 years ago and has been gradually improved and ploughmen at this event will demonstrate the ancient art of using a plough to create the perfect seedbed. For more information or to obtain an entry form please contact David Chappell on 01302 840098/07703500412 or email alchappell@hotmail.co.uk
