Editors Letter… The Winter Olympics dominated my life in the run up to sending the magazines to print this month! First medal on snow, Jenny Jones, congratulations! And of course congratulations to every Brit who competed. Particularly interest to me was Katie Summerhayes and Woodsy; both from Sheffield and both started their amazing careers at the Sheffield Sharks Ski Club; the slope where my kids learnt to ski. The slope was sadly destroyed by fire in 2012. Staying on the sporting theme, Sport Relief is back from Friday 21st March to Sunday 23rd March. The event brings the entire nation together to get active, have fun and raise lifechanging cash. This time you can help by participating in the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Games, featuring the Mile, plus new Swimathon and Cycle events. It’s never been easier to join in, do your bit and make a difference! There are lots of ideas for fundraising on www.sportrelief.com. Any one holding events please send your photos and a short piece on monies raised to carolyn@arrowpublications.co.uk and show your local community what you have achieved.
The deadline for the April issue is Wednesday 12th March. Enjoy the read

Rain, winds and storms couldn't stop this annual spectacle. Mr Brown, of Saffron Way, Crowle who decorated his house with thousands of lights which danced to music said, "A big "Thank You" . Well the lights at Brigleyhouse.co.uk are down for another year. Its been a bit of a roller-coaster with the stormy weather and some lights have been up and down several times this year" Visitors from Crowle and much further came and tuned their car radios in to listen to the spectacle. These visitors kindly made donations and Crowle & Ealand Mayor, Cllr Paul McCartan said,
"Its great to see the spirit of people, first Rob putting such an amazing effort into putting the lights up but also the public who visited and generously donated £230.02. This money will kindly go to my Mayors Charity this year, Crowle LIVES first responders and I am delighted to collect it on their behalf"

A petition circulating throughout the Isle of Axholme has already attracted hundreds of signatures for Government funding to ensure no former servicemen should face the prospect of a pauper’s funeral. The nation-wide campaign was sparked by the recent death of brave ex soldier Mick Clarke from Crowle who lost his personal battle for survival after having both legs amputated and then being diagnosed with lung cancer. Mick, 66, who served with the Royal Marines for 10 years during the 1960’s/70’s lived alone in Manor Gardens, Crowle, and died last November. But for the intervention of his close friend Barry Armstrong who helped to organise the funeral arrangements, he would almost certainly have ended up with a pauper’s funeral. Although he had no family well over 100 friends and former soldiers turned up for the funeral at Scunthorpe Crematorium where Mick was given a military send-off . Now, with the help of Scunthorpe funeral director Sue Maclean, a campaign has been launched pressing for the Government to recognise the plight of other veterans who die in similar circumstances without sufficient means to pay for a funeral. An E-petition has also been set up on the Government’s website in the hope of reaching 100,000 signatures which means the issue would be discussed in Parliament. The campaign has already met with success locally as North Lincolnshire Council is to provide funding of up to £10,000 a year towards the cost of a funeral for ex-servicemen and women. The petition states: “We, the undersigned, are concerned citizens who urge our leaders to act now to change the law so no ex-service personnel ever have to make their final journey as a pauper.” Referring to Mick Clarke’s recent case, the petition adds: “He contributed to payments into the Department for Works and Pensions all his life. However when we requested for a contribution towards his funeral expenses this was dismissed.” Petition forms can be signed at: Chafor’s Hardware shop, Crowle; Liberal Club, Crowle; Lock Stock & Barrell pub, Crowle; and Scunthorpe Tackle Centre, Lanehem Street, Scunthorpe. Alternatively go on-line to www.epetitions.direct.gov.uk and search for ‘No paupers funeral’.

This beautiful girl is Sasha, a 7 year old Rottweiler Doberman Cross. Sasha is such a lovely friendly girl, loves company and lots of fuss, and has lived with older children. She has limited sight in one eye, but this doesn’t affect her at all, and she walks beautifully on the lead. She is not very good with other dogs or cats. We are looking for a permanent or foster home for this lovely girl, as she is not coping very well with life in kennels. Sasha is neutered, vaccinated and micro-chipped. If you could offer this gorgeous girl a home, please call us on 01427 728705.

Grant Pot Don’t forget the town council sets a small sum of money aside for community groups and we usually consider them at the Feb meeting but as we have not had many applicants we will also consider at the March meeting. For more information go to www.crowletowncouncil under policy and guidance section , grant application form. This may be of help to a group needing an element of match funding for the Keadby Grange Wind farm pot or for funding a small project directly.

St Norbert’s Catholic Primary Voluntary Academy Welcome to our Newsletter! January and February have again been very busy in school with visits to the Axholme Academy, to Hull Wilberforce and Streetlife Museums, swimming at the Epworth Pool and with preparations for our Speech and Drama Club performances. Visits are also being planned to the Hull Museums, the Crucial Crew visit to Rotherham Lifewise Centre and the Schools Challenge at Lincolnshire Show. Our After School Activity Clubs have again been well supported this term and the children are enjoying the opportunity to try Streetdance, Football, Photography, Table Tennis and the lunchtime Eco Club. The children have been visited by the 'Things with Wings' assembly and, as part of our Vocations Week, our friends from St Norbert's Catholic Church, St Oswald's, the Crowle Methodist Church, Epworth Baptist Church and St Lawrence's Academy have been in school talking to the children. In addition, representatives from the Health Service, Police Force and students have also been to visit. We will also be welcoming our Jewish friends into school again during March. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support. Our Easter Bingo takes place on Tuesday 1st April. Doors open at 6.30pm with 'eyes down' at 7.30pm. Refreshments available from 6.30pm. Raffle, Whisky Board and Turkey Board too. Everyone very welcome.

Wind farm project By Neve Stokoe, Thomas Arrand, Bradley Cram and Lauren Hall 9A On the 4th February 2014, we took part in an activity in small groups which developed our knowledge on STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects which consisted of designing and building our own model wind farms. Each small group represented a different European country. We, as a team, represented the UK. The first challenge was to test pre-made blades. The blade which was deemed the most successful was different to the rest as it had a trapezium shaped blade-which featured a horizontal edge. It cut through the air better than the other shapes and at first we reached a score of 67mj, putting us around 2nd place. The aim was to produce the cheapest electricity but have the largest number of mj. Next, we had to create a tower to support the wind turbine using k-nex and try to keep the tower as light as possible- as it meant the heavier the tower the higher the cost for our company. We, as a team, gained an advantage as we were one of the lightest towers and we managed to support the turbine successfully. Penultimately, we had to design our own blades then decide whether to use them or the pre-cut blades we already had trialled. Our own blades were made from thick black card and were double-sided however the original blades were a blue corrugated plastic-like material and were only one-sided. We took the measurements from the most successful pre-made blade then slightly expanded the shape and made it more streamlined, ensuring that there were no gaps which would potentially slow the turbine. Finally, we had to go into competition with the other teams in the big finale. Just as we expected team UK stormed the competition due to our teamwork and trial methods. Because we won, we are taking part in the Big Bang event at Doncaster Racecourse in the summer of this year, representing our school.
Student Newspaper Over the past few weeks, 20 students from Years 7 & 8 have been busy preparing articles for our school newspaper called the ‘AX NEWS’. This culminated in the students interviewing students and staff on various items such as news, sport and entertainment and then on Tuesday 28th January, Lincoln University journalism lecturers came to The Axholme Academy and spent a full day helping our students in bringing all their articles together to produce the ‘AX NEWS’. Academy Principal, Joe Sellars, said ‘we have produced our newspaper working with Lincoln University for 5 years and each has been even better than the ones before and we expect the spring edition to keep up this high standard. Our students put in an awful lot of preparatory work before the full day with the university and this ensures that we produce a great read. An entirely new set of young reporters have worked on this paper and their enthusiasm and dedication has been exceptional.’ Copies of the newspaper will be distributed to students, parents & members of the community. It will also be available on our school website www.theaxholmeacademy.com

Perhaps it is a statement of the obvious, but it is worth having a caring eye on your trees throughout the year. This will mean that you will be able to spot any unusual patterns of tree behaviour such as sudden loss of leaves or strangely stunted shoots or fruit, and then taking any remedial action. At this time of year it is worth making sure that the area around the trunk of your trees is kept fairly clear – probably to a radius of about 2 feet. This means keeping any weeds or other plants away from the trunk. With a clear space around the tree you can then apply manure which will help to add nutrient and retain moisture around the tree. If you don't have a source of fresh manure you can use garden compost or leaf mould. In the first 2 or 3 months of the year it is worth adding additional nutrients to the soil around the tree to support the new growth and production of fruit. This can be in the form of Sulphate of Potash in January and Sulphate of Ammonia or Nitrochalk in February. These are readily available from garden centres. You don't need very much for each tree. Although you will probably have completed your winter pruning for freestanding trees by now it is still worth taking a look at the tree while it is bare to check that you literally have caught all of the necessary pruning. That apart, this time of year is one for eagerly anticipating the new shoots, blossom and fruit of the new season. In the next article I will be looking at apple blossom and the results of your winter pruning regime. The Apple of Your Isle is a local organisation which encourages the growth and use of apples and pears. If you would like more information about our activities or would like to talk about your trees and fruit, please contact Peter Barnard on 01427 873937.
