This very handsome fellow is Jack, a three year old Lurcher Cross. Jack is a really friendly boy who loves company and is very well behaved in the house. Key Stage Two Orienteering Competition On Thursday 27th February, Crowle Primary School and Althorpe and Keadby Primary School arrived at The Axholme Academy for a friendly orienteering competition. The idea is to enable the students to familiarise themselves with the school before they move to secondary school and also allow them to take part in a different sporting competition. Outdoor Education is a part of The Axholme Academy’s PE curriculum therefore it allows students to experience this first hand too. The students were asked to work in either pairs or groups of three and each group was given a map of the school that they had to orientate around. The aim of the competition was to go to 10 different points on the map and get a clue from each point. The clues were all mathematical shapes; therefore they had to put all of these on their answer sheet in order and race back to the finish line. The first team back with the correct answers were declared the winners. The winning team were 3 boys from Crowle Primary who devised a very clever way of getting the clues as quickly as possible. They all decided to split up and each got a number of clues before meeting back and heading to the finish line. North Lincolnshire also run a county wide competition every year and this competition enabled a warm up before the big event. Well done to all those who took part, there was a fantastic amount of effort put in on the Macauley Maxfield, Brandon McClurey & Jacob Brotzel from Crowle Primary day.

A number of Axholme Academy students found themselves behind bars for the day when they visited HMP Everthorpe, near Hull as part of their GCSE law course. The students were treated to a range of workshops and experiences including a guided tour around the prison and a look at prison food. Just like any other prison visitor, the students began their visit by being searched and having their personal possessions removed, the day started with talks from a prison officer and prisoners, a guided tour of all of the prison wings and facilities, information on the life of a prisoner from starting his sentence to being released, then workshops with prisoners themselves and finally a workshop on the day in the life of a prisoner. HMP Everthorpe is the only prison in the country to open its doors for a full day to students, either to support education and learning or to deter young people from following the wrong path and ending up with a prison sentence. Mrs Gwyther said: “It was a really fascinating day and very thought-provoking. It has really enhanced our students’ learning.” Students Ewan Downing and Chloe Kitching said: “It was great; we really learned loads about being inside a prison. It has made me determined never to end up inside. It has made me see being in prison is not the easy life you read about. It’s horrible” Sport Relief

On Friday 21 March 2014, The Axholme Academy played host to the fourth ‘It’s a Knockout’ competition to raise money for Sport Relief. All of Key Stage 3 were involved, with students competing in their forms against other forms in their year group. They took part in fun races, which included sack races, egg and spoon races, hockey dribble races and skipping races, and each form were asked to wear their House colour. The races were very hotly contested with form tutors cheering their form groups on and urging them to try their hardest, with Miss Whiting dressing up especially for the occasion. Each race had 10 students from each form competing in it and the form tutor ensured that everyone took part in at least one race. The races were measured out so that in each race, the form as a group covered a mile, to contribute towards the ‘Sport Relief mile’. All students were asked to gain sponsorship for the event and we had a non-uniform event on the day. All of the students and staff had a fun afternoon and were extremely pleased with the amount they raised on the day which is £530.00 so far. Talia Jollands taking part in the obstacle course

Readers Trades Recommendation Not sure whether to go for a new conservatory! Looking at my conservatory of 15 years, it still looked ok but my concern was the roof. It was noisy when it rained because of the polycarb, cold in the winter months and far too hot in the summer! After contacting a few conservatory companies and obtaining quotes, I decided to have a new conservatory installed by Westwood Installations. From start to finish Jon and Mike were professional, showing me examples of the products, so I knew exactly what I was buying and more to the point they did the job themselves. They contacted me on a regular basis keeping me informed, they arrived on time and completed the job efficiently. And more impressively they cleaned away and made sure it was has they found my property. I would gladly recommend Jon and Mike. In fact they are now quoting me on new windows and doors to the rest of the house. Mrs Elliott. Wroot

Year 9 Careers Day On 11th March, year 9 students did not follow their usual timetable. Instead they had a full day devoted to thinking about their future careers and what skills and qualifications they may need. The students started the day in the hall, where they did various activities, including discussing what success means to them, what they hope for in their future lives and what they enjoy and are good at. They also watched short video clips of ex-students and other young people, mostly from the local area, talking about how they reached their current career. Then came the highlight of the day: 15 visitors from the world of work came in to be interviewed several times by Nurse, Mrs Roddis talking to Morgan Taylor & Zee Day small groups of students. They included quantity surveyors, construction industry training managers, a solicitor, an accountant, a nurse, fire and police officers, and a trademark attorney who works for Rolls Royce! Year 9 had prepared their questions and listened attentively, often taking lots of notes, as the visitors described their jobs. The visitors were extremely PC Dean Southam talking to Emily Broadbent impressed by the maturity and polite manner of the year 9 students. In the afternoon, students chose from six different workshops related to careers and were provided with a wide range of experience and information from outside agencies, including the Careers Service, John Leggott College, North Lindsey College, Yorkshire and Humber Young Enterprise and Shand Group engineering. Throughout the day, the students took part with enthusiasm and made a very positive impression on the visitors who so kindly gave of their time to participate in the day.

Charlie Higson Visit North Lincolnshire Library offered local schools the opportunity to hear author, Charlie Higson, speak at The Baths Hall. It was an opportunity that could not be missed. So 58 students from KS3, accompanied by 4 members of staff, had an early lunch and took the bus to The Baths Hall. Few of the students had read any books written by the author, but the room fell silent when a clip was shown to promote his new book ‘The Fallen’. It was a bit frightening, but roused a deafening round of applause to welcome Charlie on to the stage. He explained that his book was basically about ‘kids trying to avoid being eaten by their parents.’ He quickly got the audience involved, and sparked more impromptu bouts of applause with his witty style. He warned the girls that they were ‘not supposed to snog a vampire’, and added that zombies were ‘basically teenage boys’. Students from The Axholme Academy ere sat right at the back of the auditorium, but luckily we had a pair of binoculars – we really did – so some students got a closer look. During question time a microphone was passed back to involve students that were right at the back as well. Charlie had a knack of making the everyday seem so unique. He talked about the power of communication, and through the use of impressions, including bird noises and baby cries he was able to demonstrate the power of speech. He believes that written words are even more powerful, since they can last for centuries. Inspired himself by so many things, including: his three sons, books like Lord of The Rings, and iconic movies like Night of the Living Dead, he told his audience that it was a childhood fantasy of ‘a world without adults’ that inspired his latest series of books for teenagers. As an adult he realised that fantasy would – in reality – quickly become a nightmare. Many students purchased copies of the book, signed there and then, by the author. Caitlin Young liked ‘the funny jokes and impressions’, and William Allen said he also liked ‘his humour’. One key message that stuck with me was that there are so many books out there to be enjoyed, so if you don’t like a book, then ‘find another book.’ I’m sure we will see lots of students discovering the new world of zombie like creatures that Higson has created. Mrs Emma Brameld

In this article I look at how you can control some of the summer pests and diseases on your trees. If you have carried out your pruning to allow good air circulation and light penetration into the tree, the free air movement will help to keep diseases to a low level. Similarly, the removal and burning of dead and diseased material is important in reducing pest and disease levels. This should be done as frequently as possible. You might set up a habitat in your garden which attracts and provides a refuge for beneficial insects and birds that feed on pests. Using insecticides or fungicides should probably only be used to control insects or diseases which get out of hand. Using them annually does not encourage the tree to develop and maintain its own immune system. Codling moth- This can be a significant pest and I suffer from codling moth on a number of my apples. The adult moths lay their eggs on developing frigates and on foliage. The lava borrows down to the core of the fruit, leaving a red – ringed entry hole in the side of the fruit or near the eye. On cutting open an affected fruit, the small pinkish larva may be seen. After about 4 weeks, fully grown larvae vacate the fruit which may or may not drop to the ground. Try to reduce the number of suitable overwintering sites of the larvae by removing any loose bark and other damage to the tree or nearby. In the middle of May you can put up pheromone traps in the trees. You can buy these at garden centres. I use one about every 12 feet. The sticky surface traps moths. You remove the traps at the end of the season. I have found them useful but not the complete answer. Powdery mildew- You can see shoots infected with mildew since they carry very small and narrow leaves covered with grey white matter. Flowers may be small and fail to open. New affected shoots appear pale grey in colour. Any fruit that grows may not be badly affected. You should prune out any infected growth before the trees come into leaf and either burn or remove them is from site. In the next article I will look at some more pests and diseases.
The Apple of Your Isle is a local organisation which encourages the growth and use of apples and pears. If you would like more information about our activities or would like to talk about your trees and fruit, please contact Peter Barnard on 01427 873937.
