Welcome to the May issue of the Arrow!
Epworth Old Rectory are hosting a country fayre on Sunday 7th May. Looks to be a great event for the whole family. Feeding lambs, face painting as well as a children's art competition. A date for the diary is Lex Feast Family Fun Day on Sunday 18th June at Epworth show ground. It’s a knock out competition was a great success last year and guess what? Yes its Fathers Day. Bring your dad along for a great day of fun and laughter! I would love to be including more local community content within this magazine. It costs nothing for local groups and societies. If you know of an organisation please ask them to get in touch. We are currently looking for a delivery person to deliver the Arrow to Althorpe and Derrythorpe. This is a small round of 180 magazines. The person must live in one of the villages, be fit, honest and reliable. Suit 14+ or retired person. If you are interested please email me your details. The deadline for the June issue is Wednesday 10th May for distribution by the 1st June. If you are interested in advertising please be in touch before the date.

On Thursday May 4 Imogen Wilde will be entertaining us with an illustrated talk on spiders. These are creatures you either love or hate but despite this they are fascinating and varied and play an important role in nature. Do come along and find out more. We will also be having two outdoor activities during May to which anyone is welcome to join in. We will be visiting Rush Furlong, a small wild flower meadow on the edge of Haxey, where the rare green-winged orchids grow as well as many other interesting plants. The date is not yet fixed as it depends on when the flowers are at their best but it will be one evening at the beginning of the month. The date will be announced at the May meeting on Spiders or you can contact Tony Lee or Chris Trinder for details.(see below) We are also planning on getting together for the dawn chorus, again details of time and place will be announced at the May meeting, or you can contact us directly.

New Season news at Epworth Old Rectory Spring is definitely here after a long busy winter of events, cleaning and preparing the exhibitions for reopening at the beginning of March. The Snowdrops made their early appearance closely followed by the Daffodils, Tulips and Primroses. We have new bird boxes designed to attract Tree Sparrows, a declining species so hopefully we may have nests and breeding pairs: we'll just have to wait and see. Plans are in progress to have new toilets and move the gift shop to a new space but it takes time to get work such as that done, so it won't affect our ability to open as normal this season. We have a full programme of events planned for the year so keep an eye out for posters, and on out website and facebook page. The first of those events in to be the Country Fayre on May 7th. This is going to be a real family day out with lots of attractions, Birds of Prey, Reptiles, Weird and wonderful creatures, lots of local community groups, Thorne photography club and the lambs have made a timely appearance on the croft to be included. There will also be donkeys, craft stalls and plant stalls, Streebeat and Heartsease dance groups, as well as, hopefully some vintage vehicles. There is to be a painting competition for the children (see the posters and facebook page for details). Any child bringing a painting for the art competition will get free entry to the event. We have been lucky enough to get a well known and respected artist based in Doncaster, Mr Terry Chipp to judge the competition. Terry's work has been widely exhibited and his Out of the Box series of paintings has been exhibited at the Cast in Doncaster, and will be exhibited at his studio workshop in May. We also have another big event coming up in July, as this year is the 275th anniversary Of Susanna Wesley's death, so watch out for more information at a later date. Part of the fun of being a volunteer at the rectory is meeting all the new people who visit us. In the last 2 weeks we've had visitors whose ancestors have close links to John Wesley, one of whom came to Epworth and visited the family at the Rectory in 1734. The Ghanaian ministers were a joy to look after, their excitement at being in the home of the Wesley's was catching for every one involved. And we have the Radio Humberside outside broadcast visiting us on May 3rd to do a programme from the grounds. If you would like to join our happy band of volunteers, even one half day each week would be welcome, please call Gillian on 8782268 to find out how to help us keep this part of the Isle history alive and well.
Children’s Art Competition Do you love animals? Do you have a favourite pet? Do you love drawing or painting? Are you aged between 3 – 11? If you tick these boxes, we’d love you to enter our Art Competition. Categories: 3-6 years & 7 – 11 years Prizes to be awarded by our guest judge Terry Chipp, an award winning professional artist and teacher from Doncaster. We would like you to paint us a picture or make a model of an animal of your choice. If you bring it along to our Country Fayre on Sunday 7 May, the picture’s painter will get free admission to the event. Alternatively, pictures can be delivered to the Rectory on Friday and Saturday. Please put your name, title of your picture, age and contact details on the back of the picture as we would hate someone to win & we’re not able to tell you. We are happy for a grown-up to help you with this. Thank you

NLEC Consortium Newspaper 2017 The Consortium newspaper was written and produced by students from The Axholme Academy, North Lindsey College, St Bede’s Catholic Voluntary Academy and Winterton Community Academy. Lucy Chessman, Alyssa Donskoy, Josh Fowles, Lara Hinchcliffe, Emmy Hookway and Barbara-Ann Mclaughlin all in Year 9 prepared articles in advance such as the Supporter to Reporter project, WW1 Project at Normanby Hall and many more exciting activities that take place at the academy. This culminated in travelling to the University Of Lincoln School Of Journalism to bring their pages together where the students worked with staff to design their pages with the other schools involved in the newspaper. Please visit our website to download the NLEC Consortium Newspaper 2017
The Axholme Alliance Over the past few weeks Mrs Cox has been visiting pupils at our partner primary schools to help them prepare articles for their fifth edition of the school newspaper. This culminated in the pupils interviewing pupils and staff on various items such as news, sport and entertainment. The schools include Luddington & Garthorpe Primary School, Althorpe & Keadby Primary School, St Norbert’s Catholic Primary Voluntary Academy, Crowle Primary Academy and Gunness & Burringham C of E Primary School, Reedness Primary School and Swinefleet Primary School. On Monday 27th February pupils made the journey to Lincoln University to spend a full day with university lecturers, students and volunteer journalists helping them bring all their articles together to produce The Axholme Alliance newspaper as well as trying a short TV exercise with second year TV students from the university. After speaking to the children about the day and more importantly the students that helped out designing the pages and the TV taster sessions. The feedback from the pupils was as follows: Really helpful, Kind, If you were nervous with TV taster session the students encouraged you, Helped with the pages when you were stuck, Encouraging, Really enjoyed the TV exercise, Interesting and enjoyed working with the students, Helped to explain about the programs when designing the pages, Nothing too much trouble, Enthusiastic, Even if it was a simple question, the student would take time to answer and explain it really well, Really helpful and really nice, Really fun and played games at the end, Wanted to help at all times, Lovely, Good ideas for pages, Worked well and not distracted, Polite. As you can see from the comments; everyone had a brilliant day and the students deserve a big pat on the back for being so professional in their work.
The Axholme Academy raised a fantastic £377.76 for Red Nose Day. The money was raised by selling red noses in form time, Non-uniform day for staff & students, A ‘Sweet Treet’ stall with sweets, popcorn, cookies and cakes donated by students and staff. A big thank you to Miss Patrick for organising the day’s event and to everyone else who donated cakes etc. or contributed to the event.
