Welcome to the May issue of the Arrow! I would like to say ‘Spring has Sprung, but has it really?’ Middle of April and its still cold, but on a more positive note the nights are getting lighter and hopefully May will bring a heat wave!
Great to see more community news this month! We would like to wish local talent, Leah all the best for her acting career. Lets hope she follows in the footsteps of another local girl Sheridan Smith. Dreams can come true if we work hard enough and have the right focus.
Good to see local events from Garthorpe coming in; coffee morning and plant sale and a vintage vehicle gathering. This month we have a change from the usual police report. We have news of ‘My Community Alert’. More details are on page 6, with dates for surgeries too. Also make a date in your diary for Rescue Day 2018. This year they are celebrating their 10th anniversary. I actually cant believe it was 10 years ago when I made my first visit! A great day out for all the family.
Please note the deadline for the June issue is Friday 11th May for distribution by the 1st June. If you are interested in advertising or simply emailing me some community news, please be in touch before the date.

Crowle Lights Many thanks to all those who braved a cold and snowy night on Saturday 17th March to attend the Easter themed bingo night at Ealand Victory Hall. The evening was extremely well attended and it was great to see young and old enjoying themselves together. Many people left with super Easter prizes and the evening raised an impressive £250 which will go towards the cost of ensuring Crowle and Ealand has impressive Christmas lights once again this year. There are two more Bingo nights planned for Saturday 30 th June and Saturday 15th December and we would be delighted if even more could attend to help support the Christmas Lights. The lights committee meet on the first Monday of each month, 7pm at Crowle fire station. If you are interested in joining us please feel free to turn up or contact us through our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/crowlelights/). Alternatively, you could help support us by joining the North Lincolnshire lottery and becoming a ‘Friend of Crowle lights’, 60 pence in every £1 goes directly to the lights fund. World Down’s Syndrome Day World Down's Syndrome Day is celebrated on March 21st each year and staff and students at The Axholme Academy supported the event this year by wearing odd socks for the day. We posted pictures of our socks on social media with the #InclusionMatters Down's syndrome is a genetic disorder in which there is a third copy of chromosome 21 in each cell. People with Down’s Syndrome usually have a learning disability – this doesn’t mean they can’t learn – they’re just slower than others at learning. The theme for World Down's Syndrome Day 2018 was "What I bring to my community." Staff and students at the Axholme Academy believe that all people with disabilities, not just those with Down's Syndrome, must have opportunities to contribute to the community, live valued lives and be included in all aspects of society. We wore our odd socks on March 21st to raise awareness about Down's Syndrome, but more importantly, to celebrate diversity and to remind us to treat everyone equally, irrespective of their abilities or disabilities.
Class Act '18 acts performed for the judges in Class Act which was held on Thursday 22nd March. There was a variety of acts including singing, dancing, piano, drums and flute. The judges had a tough decision to make as they could only choose two acts to go through to the final. The winners were chosen as Caitlin Hawksworth who sang 'The Hunter' by Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Katie Stringwell who sang 'Shape of you' by Ed Sheeran. Well done to everyone who took part.' SPORT RELIEF MILES FROM LANDS END TO JOHN O'GROATS Students and staff from The Axholme Academy attempted to walk/jog from Lands End to John O'Groats during Sport Relief Day at the school on Friday 23rd March. This was a total distance of 1068 miles and presented an ambitious but achievable challenge for everyone! Contributions varied in distance but every student completed at least one mile at some point during the day. Khai Wilmot in Year 7 did remarkably well and completed 10 miles towards the total. Miss Harrison was plotting where we were on a map after each lesson and it all came down to Year 11 period 5 who needed to get us through the top of Scotland and to John O'Groats. The 1068th mile was completed by Jade Garland at about 2.40pm to complete a fantastic achievement on the day. The mile course was on the field and involved the students snaking back and forth in order to make the distance on one lap exactly one mile. Miss Harrison organised the day and ensured that all students were given the opportunity to take part. It was a fantastic day and one that gave everyone the opportunity to do something for a good cause. We now await to see how much has been raised in sponsorship money when that is due in following the Easter break.

Planning is well underway for Rescue Day 2018 After the huge success of Rescue Day 2017, helped along by wall to wall sunshine, planning is in full swing for this year’s event.
The members of the committee and organising team are already hard at work preparing what promises to be yet another fantastic day for all the family to enjoy, in what is the 10 th year anniversary of the event. Rescue Day 2018 will be held on Saturday 7th July at 7 Lakes Country Park in Crowle, North Lincolnshire. The event, which first started in 2008, showcases the excellent work that our 999 and rescue services do and allows for the general public to engage with the staff and volunteers who serve and protect us around the clock. It is the biggest of its kind in the country and attracts crowds in the thousands. Last July’s sun baked day, which is hosted annually in the idyllic water and woodland setting of 7 Lakes Country Park, was a huge hit with record crowds attending and visitors flocking from across the country. The day is organised by a team comprising of frontline Fire, Ambulance and Police staff from across the North Lincolnshire area and beyond who volunteer their time to run the event. Chris Long, Joint Event Director said: “Rescue Day 2017 was another huge success and we’d like to thank all the organising team, the organisations that take part, sponsor and support the event, our hosts 7 Lakes Country Park, and of course all the members of the public who come along and enjoy the day.” Chris went onto say: “Last year saw a magnificent amount of support for our emergency services on the day which was really great to see. We were delighted with the great feedback we have received across social media and it underlines to us that Rescue Day is a true family event.” The purpose of Rescue Day is to bring together as many rescue services as possible in one place to demonstrate what they do and how they do it. Raising public awareness on safety issues such as the dangers of open waters, road safety, fire prevention, drink and drug driving plus general community safety issues combined with an interesting yet fun day out is the continuing aim of Rescue Day. Visitors always have the opportunity to publicly engage with their Police, Fire, Ambulance, Air Ambulance, Search and Rescue, Coastguard, Water Rescue and other service staff and volunteers.
7 Lakes will become a hive of activity on 7th July with a huge range of emergency related vehicles on display, with many of the favourite attractions including live action demonstrations that include extremely life like incidents including road, train, water and aviation incidents to name but a few, as well as the headline grabbing Red Devils Parachute Display Team. Organisations including Humberside Fire & Rescue Service, East Midlands Ambulance Service, Humberside Police, Highways Agency, St John Ambulance, Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance, 7 Lakes Country Park, Network Rail, VolkerRail, Gallowswood Recovery and many more come together on Rescue Day to support this enjoyable and informative annual event. Chris said: “As always they’ll be lots to see and do, and it really is a day that all the family can enjoy, children and adults alike. We hope those that have been to Rescue Day before will come along again this year to celebrate our 10th year anniversary, and those that haven’t been before will come and experience this unique and exciting event.” More details can be found at www.rescueday999.com or on social media Twitter: @Rescue_Day and www.facebook.com/rescudedayuk.
