The two priorities for the North Axholme Ward are :Crowle Town Centre- Anti-social behaviour and vehicle nuisance. Humberside Police have now introduced a Dispersal Order in Crowle town centre to help tackle the on going concern over anti-social behaviour in the area. The Order gives Police officers and Police Community Support Officers the power to disperse people who are congregating PCSO PCSO 7576 PC1717 together in such a way that likely to result in members of Wendy Frear Paul Fearon Graham Godley the public being intimidated, harassed, alarmed or distressed. The dispersal area covers Potts Lane, the Market Place, Johnsons Lane and the grounds of St Oswalds Church Church Street Crowle. The implementation of the dispersal order has reduced calls for service and the youths are now fully aware of its existence. Residents have commented on the reduction of anti-social behaviour in the area. The Neighbourhood team are looking for the support of parents to address these community concerns with their children, and for parents to take responsibility for knowing where they are on an evening and not allowing them to drink alcohol. The Crowle Youth Club, Street Sports and other activities are provided by the local and town council. Crowle Town Council are currently looking into what facilities they may be able to provide in the future for the young people. Trentside and Chapel Lane Keadby – Suspicious incidents/fires/damage. There have been a number of calls regarding the suspicious incidents occurring at the above locations with persons wandering around at all hours of the day and night. There have also been a number of small fires in derelict buildings on Trentside and damage has been caused to the flood walls. The Neighbourhood Policing Team are continuing to patrol the area. Two males have been charged and bailed to Court regarding theft of property from farm premises on Trentside, one of the same men has been issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice for wasting Police time after making a false report of theft of a motor vehicle, another male has been given a caution for theft of scrap metal from industrial premises on Station Road and through Police liaison with the Humberside Fire and Rescue, one company has arranged security on site whilst barns are demolition from their unoccupied premises on Trentside to prevent further offences of criminal damage and theft. We are committed to providing a wide variety of opportunities to engage with you on a frequent basis and ensure consultation and agreement upon local priorities. This provides an opportunity to update you and discuss progress. It is intended that at least one published meeting will be held in the neighbourhood team each month. This will ensure you know where you can attend to engage and work with your local team. Meetings will include traditional public meetings at school and village halls, council meetings and community centres. To ensure that we consult as widely as possible we are always seeking new and innovative ways of communicating with the community and welcome any views or suggestions you may have. On Tuesday 28th September the Police Events Bus visited the villages of Ealand, Luddington, Amcotts and Keadby in order for members of the community to visit and discuss any local issues or concerns. The number of residents visiting to speak to the Neighbourhood Team was disappointing and consideration will have to be given about continuing with this form of community engagement. A Police walk about surgery is held the first Monday of every month. The next two walkabout surgeries are on Monday 1st October 2010 and Monday 6th December 2010 and will be around Crowle Town centre. This will increase the amount of contact the community has with the local policing team and give residents the opportunity to tell us of their concerns and relate any information they may have about local issues. The Neighbourhood Action Team was held on Tuesday 31st August 2010 at Althorpe and Keadby School. The date of the next meeting is Tuesday 30th November 2010 at the same location. Although not a ‗ public ‗ meeting, residents were encouraged to raise concerns or issues with their community representatives ( Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator, Parish Councillor or member of the policing team ) so they could be discussed and so community priorities identified and appropriate action considered. The Neighbourhood Team and the Roads Policing Department have continued to deal with anti-social use of motor vehicles in Crowle especially around the Potts lane car park area. One driver has had his vehicle seized following a second incident of careless and inconsiderate driving. Two males have been charged and bailed to Magistrates Court regarding burglary to farm buildings in Crowle. A male has been charged and bailed to Magistrates Court for the unlawful possession of a shotgun. A male has been charged and bailed to Magistrates Court for assault and criminal damage. A male have been cautioned for disorderly behaviour. A male driver has been given a Section 59 verbal waning regarding an incident of careless and inconsiderate driving. A second offence will result in the seizure of the vehicle. If anyone has any issues or concerns in their community or has any information regarding who is responsible for crime in our area, please can they contact PC Godley or any of the Neighbourhood Team and any information provided will be dealt with in the strictest confidence. Working with Pc Graham Godley are your Police Community Support Officers Paul Fearon and Wendy Frear who regularly patrols the North Ward area of the Isle and will be happy to discuss any community issues with you. Please feel free to stop and speak with them or alternatively contact either of us via 0845 60 60 222 or by e-mail graham.godley, paul.fearon or wendy.frear @humberside.pnn.police.uk. The Isle of Axholme

Where You Live

Your Local History

Adapted by Anthony Catherall

The Drainage of the Isle continued.. The drainage of the Cornish tin mines greatly influenced the drainage of the Isle of Axholme. The introduction of pumping engines brought about a new era in the history of the drainage of the Isle. The first pumping engine was installed at Misterton Soss after the flood of 1828. In 1837 Sir Robert Sheffield installed an engine draining Butterwick South Moor. In 1858 Bull Hassocks pumping station was opened and Dirtness in 1867. At Dirtness the engine was renewed in 1928 and the present electrically driven pumps were installed in 1952. Other pumping stations include Snow Sewer, Candy Farm, Goodcop, Tunnel Pits (one of the newest, built in 1962) and of course Keadby, the key pumping station where most of the Isle’s water is pumped into the Trent. The present six Keadby pumps date from1940 and can lift 102 million gallons a day, through thirteen and a half feet each. The area drained by Keadby pumping station is 93,430 acres. Engineers of the Trent River Board are constantly making improvements to the drainage. In 1972 the Skyers drain west of Epworth Turbary was dug to feed a small pumping station into the South Level Engine Drain’ Some of Vermuyden’s original drains are still in operation with the modification such as: the New River Torne the New Idle Drain from Idle Stop to Dirtness Dutch River to Goole some dry channels from Pilfrey Bridge to Althorpe. Other items that can be seen in connection with the history of drainage include, the old course of the River Idle west of Tunnel Pits the old course of the Don in Eastoft village, and as marked on a two and half one inch to I mile map showing its course along parish boundaries. Vermuyden’s headquarters at Santoft – on the left well set back from the road near the crossroads. Bibliography: Various literature from Trent River Board, Reads History of the Isle of Axholme – T.C. Get ready for Christmas! Great Vouchers inside your local magazine Publishers of magazines for your local community in the Doncaster and Isle of Axholme regions Terms and conditions may apply. If you wish to be included in the next voucher scheme to be issued in 2011 please contact Carolyn on 01302 532676 or 0791 2643010 for rates and further details

www.arrowpublications.co.uk The November issue of the Arrow has linked with local businesses to make the run up to Christmas a cheaper and more pleasurable experience. Whether you want to start (or in some cases finish) your Christmas shopping; complete DIY jobs, pamper or treat yourself to a meal out, the Arrow has everything to save you money! What could be more convenient than the shops that are there on our doorstop? Don‘t pass them by as if they are somehow second rate. They are not. In fact convenience is only a part of the story as to why they deserve our support. Here is a little food for thought...Jumping into the car and heading for that outof-town super store or shopping mall may seem a good idea. But it can end up a time-wasting, costly and a frustrating experience. Time, they say, is precious. But how many hours are wasted in traffic jams, just getting to your destination – and then driving round to find a place to park In the meantime, the pennies you think you will save turn into pounds of extra expense. If it‘s a friendly, personal service you are after, then there‘s nothing finer than a shop or business in the Isle! Or maybe having someone come to you; there are plenty of mobile services out there for you to enjoy! Such attention is a tradition that has its roots embedded in the history of each village and hamlet in the area. The recent economic downturn has also had an impact on the local economy, which is why it is more important than ever to shop locally and support our local businesses. The growth of our villages in recent years has seen an increase in facilities and business services. But they can only survive if the people they are designed to serve support them. Let’s face it, we’d all miss them if they were not there!

There are 3 pages full of special offers and discounts to help you along the way. Support your local businesses, cut out the vouchers and shop, shop, shop..

St Norbert’s Catholic Primary School Newsletter Welcome to our November Newsletter. Since our last Newsletter back in July, we have achieved two new awards, a Global Awareness Award and an Extended Schools Award. The first for Global Awareness is extra-special as a Gold grading has been awarded. There are only 5 other schools in the country who have achieved this standard. The second award for Extended Schools celebrates our achievements in providing clubs, activities and opportunities for children above and beyond the normal school day. We are very pleased with both these achievements which were a fitting end to a very busy summer term. The children have had a busy start to the new term. The upper school have visited Eden Camp, Malton and the lower school, Eureka! in Halifax. In addition, the children will be having their annual visit to the pantomime in December. All children in school will also watch a performance by a travelling theatre company during November. You may have noticed if you have passed our school recently that the extension to the school hall is well under way. Once completed, this will provide better facilities for both the school and the local community. In addition to the hall extension, we are also having new kitchen facilities which will be used both as a teaching kitchen for the children and also provide improved facilities for anyone wishing to hire the hall. If there are any community groups who are looking for a ―new home‖ or on a ―one-off‖ basis, please get in touch with us once the hall re-opens in November and we will be happy to discuss your requirements with you. We would like to acknowledge the help and financial assistance that North Lincolnshire Council have given us to enable the kitchen project to progress and also to everyone who has helped with fundraising for the hall project. Subject to the hall re-opening, our Christmas Bingo is planned for Wednesday 17 November. Doors open 6.30pm with ―eyes down‖ at 7.30pm. Refreshments will be available from 6.30pm onwards. Everyone welcome. In addition, we hope to have our toddler group, Shining Stars, up and running again as soon as the hall reopens. Please telephone the school during November for further information. We don‘t want to mention the ―Christmas‖ word just yet but it will be here before we realise. The children will soon start practising for their Christmas performances and if there are any members of the community who would like to watch this, we would be very pleased to welcome you to our school on Tuesday 7th December at 10am. Tickets will be limited so please telephone towards the end of November to reserve your tickets – 01724 710249. We are always very happy to welcome everyone into school and have in the past organised some successful intergenerational projects/clubs. If anyone has any ideas/projects they would like us to consider or can help us with, we would be very happy to discuss these with you. Thank you.

Local business man Geoff Moore from Eastoft has taken on a new business venture; not only is Geoff the local taxi driver, but now hires out an executive Chrysler 300C! Geoff moved to the Isle in 2006, at the time was working for Audi. Geoff had worked in motor Industry for over 25 years. When his job came to an end late 2006, Geoff looked at the number of villages around the Isle especially from Crowle to Goole; with limited bus times and thought there was a gap in the market to launch a Private Hire business where he could provide a service for the villages. XI Private Hire was born in July 2008. Geoff says ―Starting in the middle of a recession, friends thought I was mad. With the first 2 years under my belt with tax driving, I needed something to compliment my business. In the past few months I have received a number of enquiries for wedding cars, and obviously when I said I had a Citroen C8, though a very nice people carrier, it wasn't what they were looking for.‖ The next point was, what car should I purchase? I thought a Jaguar, Mercedes, BMW 7 series, Audi A8 Long wheel base, but when I looked at all these models the same thought came back to me on every occasion. The aperture of the rear door was quite narrow. Now for me when you are collecting the bride on the most important day of her life, you need sufficient ease of access. When I saw the Chrysler 300C, with the Bentley Grille, the space, the luxury, the layout and the engineering, I thought this is the car! I can proudly say I am now the owner of the very Chrysler 300C. It is a dream come true. Geoff also offers different packages, such as Executive Work, Proms Night, Day at the Races. Picnic Hamper and Champagne. Ann, my wife has just received her license, so anyone out there who would prefer the lady drive, give Axi Private Hire a call. We are also improving our web site over the coming weeks to include the new business venture so generating new business. Most importantly we see the business as an opportunity to bring additional interest to the Isle, and hopefully to other businesses. Whether you are getting married, going on that special day/ night or would just like to treat someone give Geoff a ring on 01724 798877 or 07866 859963 and make their day special! Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust Walk around Epworth Turbary A guided walk around Epworth Turbary, the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust‘s nature reserve, will take place on Sunday October 31st at 10am. There has been a lot of management work carried out on the Turbary over the past year to open up and enhance the reserve. Geoff Trinder, the reserve manager, and Matthew Blissett, a staff member, will take visitors round the reserve and explain what has been happening. Everyone is welcome so do come along and have an enjoyable walk round the reserve. Stout footwear or Wellingtons are advisable. Life under Water The November meeting of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust‘s Isle of Axholme group takes place on Thursday November 4th when Brian Jubb and John Naylor will be showing us some wonderful photographs of life under water. They have been to many places round the world taking photographs of the fascinating life found in the waters there, as well as life in the sea around Britain. There is an amazing variety of plants and animals to be seen and they have captured much of this on film. Both are excellent photographers so this will be a very enjoyable evening. Do come along and join us, everyone is welcome, meetings are always open to anyone, you don‘t have to be a member. Advance notice Make a note of our next meeting, Thursday December 2nd, when we have our annual members slide and digital night. This is always a popular meeting so put it in your diary. We meet on the first Thursday of the month from October to May at the new hall at the rear of Haxey Methodist Chapel on Low Street starting at 7.30pm. There is a small admission charge of £1 and there is a raffle and refreshments. Bird food is always on sale at the meetings as well as at Geoff‘s house in Belton. For further information about the local Trust group and their meetings please contact Geoff or Chris Trinder on 01427 872051. We look forward to welcoming all regular members and new visitors.

2nd Crowle Scout Group 16 Cubs and Scouts have been on an adventure weekend in September. Activities included raft building, climbing, giant swing, fencing, Jacobs ladder and aeroball. Everyone involved had a great time and the Group are looking to book another trip next year. The Beaver Colony have been on a sleepover to the Viking Centre at Claxby, the theme being dinosaurs. Once again all had a great time. The Scouts are currently working on their creative challenge badge part of which is clay modelling. Thanks to Karen Raithby of Pentangle Pottery for providing the expertise and clay. Badges to be completed in October are the fitness badge for Beavers, challenge badges for Cubs and communications for Scouts.

The new season at Axholme Camera Club got off to a good start with several new members joining. Club Secretary Joyce Hooley has been busy all summer booking some very interesting speakers for the coming months, and with workshops, members' evenings and competitions the programme is varied, full of interest and activity. The first speaker was Club member Geoff Trinder ARPS, a wildlife photographer who shared his knowledge and showed his work in an inspiring and fascinating talk, Photographing Birds in Flight. He was followed by John Jones, equally knowledgeable in his field, Life in the Darkness. John, along with his 80 year old assistant, has been studying the living things in a disused drift mine in Derbyshire, recording his findings over the last 10 years. Spiders, Moths, Bats, Fungi and other things found in the dark, damp conditions underground may not be everyone's favourite things, but John had such enthusiasm for his subject, and a wealth of information, with a dash of humour that the members were thoroughly educated and entertained. Gary Brown, a local man, brought along his equipment and talked about his work as an Events photographer. Many people think of turning their hobby into a business, and Gary has done this, with help from his daughter Katy. It was a very interesting evening, but dispelled any idea that this might be an easy option for fellow photographers. So far, there has been one competition, an Open Subject,, as usual, was very well attended. The judge, Alan Robson FRPS APAGB travelled from Selby to view and comment on the prints. George Fiddler did well with a win and a 2nd place, also Jean Goodburne, Albert Phillipson, Harry Snow and Judy Newton. On November 9th, everyone is invited to attend a presentation by Peter Baker LRPS, DPAGB. His projected images ( audio visual ) entitled 'Walk on the Wild Side ( Through the Eyes of a Fox) promises to be a very entertaining evening. All welcome at 7.30pm, Haxey Church Hall, admission ÂŁ1.50 to include refreshments. Come along and bring a friend.
