Editors Letter‌ You may have already started thinking about Christmas! On writing this editorial we have 70 days left until the big day! I know it all comes round so fast!
Before Christmas we have our festivities in November, Bonfire night; this is one of my favourite times of the year! Millions of people throughout many centuries have enjoyed fireworks. Accidents can happen with anything though - anytime, anywhere. Don't let it happen to you, because the consequences of carelessness with fire can be devastating. Handsome Nina is looking for his new home! This lovely lady is Nina, a stunning 2 year old Rottweiler Husky Cross. She is a really friendly girl who loves fuss and treats, and walks well on the lead. She has lived with children, so a home with older children would be fine. She has also lived with cats, but is not always good with other dogs, so would need to be the only dog in the house. Nina is spayed, vaccinated and micro-chipped. If you are interested in adopting Nina, please give Isle Rescue a call on 01427 728705.

European Day of Languages
This is celebrated on September 26th and, as last year, The Axholme Academy invited three local primaries to take part in an afternoon of activities. Pupils from Crowle Primary, Eastoft and Saint Norbert’s arrived after lunch and the afternoon began with everyone, teachers included, dancing to the Spanish song, Juan Pequeña Baila. Then the primaries performed two beautiful songs in French which were much appreciated. After that, it was over to Year 9 students to run activities with groups of pupils, including French bingo, a map game, boules and a language bookmark competition. Once again, the biggest language lesson in Crowle!
Year 7 Enrichment Day On Wednesday 2nd October, year 7 students at The Axholme Academy could forget the timetable and experience a different kind of day. They started with a quiz about Spain and had four workshops during the day: sampling Spanish food; flamenco dancing; a Spanish language lesson where they gave a weather report in Spanish; and producing a collage of the famous Picasso painting, Guernica. They also had the opportunity to ‘Ask Alberto’ in a session where they interviewed our Spanish IT technician, Alberto, about his homeland. The students responded enthusiastically and it was a really enjoyable day that really extended their knowledge of another culture.
The Axholme Academy was once again honoured to take part in the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support for the second year running. The Academy was supported by friends, relatives and members of the local community along with all students and staff who thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to help support Macmillan fund raising event. Event organiser Kathy O’Callaghan said ‘A massive thank you goes to the students staff, friends and families who provided the cakes for the sale and to the companies that donated the tea, coffee, hot chocolate milk and sugar and for the donated raffle prizes and not forgetting those who took part in ’guess how many coffee beans in a jar’ Due to the enormous support of everyone, once again we managed to raise the substantial amount of £510.95. Principal, Joe Sellars, said ‘Once again our staff, students, parents and local community have worked brilliantly together to raise a lot of money for this important cause’

THE APPLE OF YOUR ISLE NEWS In the last article I looked at picking and storing your fruit. In this article I am looking at some things you can do with your fruit and start to look at some health care for your trees over the winter. As well as eating your apples and pears and turning them into jams, chutneys and a variety of tasty disjes, you can also turn them into fresh apple and pear juice and into cider and perry. The process for making juice (and the further step to make it into cider and perry) is not difficult. Different varieties of apples and pears produce different amounts of juice when pressed. An early apple which produces much sweet juice is Katy. This is a favourite of some commercial producers of apple juice as well as being one of my favourites. Using apples which are ripe and have been allowed to mature on the tree rather than being picked early ensures that many of the natural fruit sugars can be available in your juice. The process for making juice follows these stages: collecting suitable fruit and discarding any that it is mouldy or very badly damaged; washing it (apple juice flavoured with dirt is not my favourite); breaking down the metabolism of the fruit either by smashing it (the traditional way was to smash the fruit in a bucket with a large piece of wood, but nowadays we use a large mincer – called a scratter – but you could use an electric drill with a mixing attachment) or by freezing the fruit; and then pressing the pulp into juice. The commercial producers of produce pasteurise the juice to prevent it from going off or becoming alcoholic. I found that bottled produce starts to ferment (using the natural yeasts in the air) after about three days. If you can't drink all your juice in this time – and unless you want to make it into cider – you can freeze it. This process is relatively straightforward once you have the right equipment, and you might be interested to know that The Apple of Your Isle hire out pressing equipment. From October onwards trees start to lose their leaves. The process of tidying up around your fruit trees is an important one at this time of year. Collecting up falling leaves will give you a wonderful leaf compost for your garden next year if the leaves are bagged or otherwise collected to rot down. If the leaves remain on the ground they will get blown about and some will be used by worms. If you don’t tidy them away you risk harbouring any diseases transferred from the tree to the leaves. The same applies to rotten fruit – of any size – and these should be collected and binned. As the leaves fall from a tree, it is worth starting to look at the growth that the tree has made this year and also spot any damage to branches. This might be because of a great weight of fruit, but there might also be signs of disease – canker perhaps - in the wood. This will prepare you for the task later in the year of pruning the tree. The Apple of Your Isle is a local organisation which encourages the growth and use of apples and pears. We have equipment you can hire so that you can press your own fruit at home. If you would like more information about our activities or would like to talk about your trees and fruit, please contact Peter Barnard on 01427 873937.
