Welcome to the November issue of the Arrow.

10 weeks til Christmas, oh no I hear you all say! Yes, we are now on count down but before the festive season my favourite time of year; Halloween and Bonfire night. Remember to keep safe and if you can, attend an organised firework display do so. A well organised bonfire and fireworks is held every year at the Epworth showground. This year bonfire night falls on a Saturday! Gates open at 4:30pm, bonfire is lit at 6pm and fireworks at 6.45pm. Adults are £5 and children are £2. Under 5’s are free. From the November issue the Arrow will no longer be delivered to Althorpe and Derrythorpe. This is short term until a reliable delivery person can be found. If anyone knows anyone who lives in one of the villages and interested in a small delivery round once a month ask them to be in touch. The deadline for the December issue is Friday 11th November for distribution by the 1st December. If you are interested in advertising please be in touch before the date.

The Axholme Academy features on The Lorraine Kelly Show this morning, Thursday 6th October 2016 This morning Jake Quickenden burst into an assembly at The Axholme Academy to surprise English teacher Carl Thompson and present him with a Kelly’s Hero’s award live on ITV at the start of Lorraine Kelly’s Morning Show. The surprise had been kept a secret for weeks as the school worked with the show to make the event happen. Carl was chosen by Lorraine to receive the award because in July he was on a coach full of children from The Axholme Academy who were travelling to Alton Towers for an end of term visit. The driver became unconscious at the wheel and Carl aided by the teaching assistants Steph Parkinson & Di Nunns managed to get into the driver’s seat and steer it off the motorway around a roundabout and onto a dual carriageway before managing to stop it. The coach had veered across all three lanes of the motorway and struck the central reservation during the incident. All staff and students on the coach survived the accident without injury thanks to his amazing quick thinking. The coach driver later recovered from his ill health. Principal, Joe Sellars, said ‘Carl and our students had a fantastic morning appearing on live TV and receiving a really well deserved award for being a hero. Jake was a real star as he burst into an assembly we had planned about hero’s and took everyone by complete surprise. This was all broadcast live at 8.45am and was followed up on the show with extra footage and interviews. It has been a nightmare keeping the secret nd planning the event but it was very worthwhile!’ Jake Quickenden was swamped by children at the school and spent most of the morning talking to students and staff, taking selfies and even performing two songs in the music department before departing with an invitation to come back soon.

Macmillan Coffee Morning The Axholme Academy took part in the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support for the 5th year running. The Academy was supported by friends, relatives and members of the local community along with all students and staff who thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to help support Macmillan fund raising event which took part after the sponsored walk. Event organiser Kathy O’Callaghan said “Congratulations to everyone involved at The Axholme Academy Macmillan Coffee Morning for their donations, and a massive thank you to everyone that came along and helped us raise £521.75 thank you all”.

Living History – Year 7 Murton Park visit A record number of Year 7 of the Axholme Academy didn't just study history but lived it this week when they spent the day being Vikings in Dark Ages York. A record number of students, who are currently studying the History of York in the Dark Ages travelled in space to Murton Park, just outside of York and in time, to the 11th century. During the day the students helped run a Dark Ages house, worked with clay to make oil lamps, farmed the land and learnt how to defend it from raiders. Richard Thorpe, History teacher at The Axholme Academy added 'This really brings the past alive. Living in a Viking long house teaches you, if nothing else, you can't storm out to your bedroom after an argument - there is only one room for eating, sleeping and 14 working’!
