The remaining members of Crowle and Ealand Methodist Churches are making a heartfelt plea to the local community to help preserve our Heritage before it is too late. Both chapels are struggling to keep going with dwindling congregations and one, or both, could face closure in the next 12 months unless more support is forthcoming. November 16th marks the 117th anniversary of Crowle’s Fieldside Church but this year there won’t be much of a celebration. We’re not appealing for money (although donations are always welcome) but for support, either as worshipping Christians and/or as volunteers to assist with fund raising, a vital ingredient towards on-going maintenance costs. Refreshments are part of fund raising events but now our ‘Tea team’ of 4 has dropped to one illustrating how serious this crisis is. Without fundraising we cannot carry on and without more helpers we cannot fund-raise. Crowle Chapel is not simply for Sunday services but serves the local community in many other ways (when not restricted by Covid) such as: Monthly Coffee Mornings (average attendance 50 to 60); Weekly Craft Group sessions; Weekly ‘Call In’ Mornings; Pastoral work visiting elderly and non-Churchgoers; Supporting Scunthorpe’s Food Bank. Another project has been monthly sponsorship of a boy from Liberia, Africa,(amounting to almost £1,800). We started when he was 4 and today the teenager still keeps in touch to thank us. For years Crowle Chapel staged popular Summer Concerts until lack of manpower ended them . It’s a similar scenario at Ealand Chapel, first opened in 1882 and now the village’s only place of worship. Mary Brown, 86; continues to fulfil her stewarding duties despite serious health problems and admits it’s a real struggle to keep going but without new blood she’s reluctant to give up her post. She says: “I’m heartbroken and sad to be facing possible closure. I’ve fond memories of all the good times we’ve enjoyed here. “I first attended Sunday School in a wooden building close to the Chapel and at 15 I was presented with a Hymn Book for being a Sunday School helper which I still treasure today.” Ealand Chapel also staged Concert Parties; Salvation Army Concerts; Garden Parties; Flower Festivals plus Coffee Mornings. Mary underwent Open Heart surgery in 2013 and struggles to walk now but her strong Faith keeps her going. So the question is: Are there any local residents willing to give up an hour of their time on Sundays to swell our numbers; Plus anyone who can spare a few hours to assist at fund-raising functions. You can be assured of a warm, friendly welcome and if you feel slightly apprehensive about coming we can make sure someone sits with you for reassurance and guidance. Also we’re happy to provide lifts if transport is a problem. So if you care about your community’s heritage, please please take the first step and make contact with us at any of the following numbers: Crowle Chapel – Pat Briggs 710193; Denise Edwards 711314; Roy Briggs 07836 229366. Ealand Chapel – Colin McCrea 07772860773; Mary Brown 710812.

Humberside Police would like to offer the following crime prevention advice to people for Halloween & Bonfire Night. By following this simple advice you could prevent yourself from becoming a victim of crime. If you do not wish to be disturbed on Halloween then please display a poster in your window and/or on your door that states you don’t want any callers. This will let those people who are out and about taking part in the festivities know that you do not wish to be disturbed. Parents- Are you taking your child/children out trick or treating or to a bonfire display? If so please don’t make your home a target for a burglar. An opportunist thief will know that people will be out and about leaving their homes empty. Make it look like you have somebody at home and NEVER leave valuables on display. Parents and carers are asked to keep children safe and to know where they are and what they are doing. Make this Bonfire Night pass without harm, injury or incident. If you are driving to a Halloween or Bonfire Night event, then make sure that you don't leave anything on display when you leave your vehicle. Thieves work under the cover of darkness and will damage your vehicle to get to anything you might leave on the seats or footwell. Officers from neighbourhood policing teams will be going out and about, encouraging youngsters to enjoy the festivities without becoming a nuisance in their neighbourhood. Retailers are reminded of their responsibility not to sell flour and eggs to youngsters on the run up to Halloween and Mischief Night. Please be aware that during Halloween & Bonfire Night calls to police, especially in relation to Anti Social Behaviour, can be significantly higher than normal. This may increase the call answering times so please be aware of this. THINK do you really need to call the police? Calls for service are generally higher around this time of year so please consider if it is the police you really need and just how important is it?

3 peaks for MIND!

Due to the amazing fundraising efforts by everyone so far, we have raised the fundraising target to £2,000! Let's keep the donations coming in, thank you so much from all of us to all of you. Rising at 05:00am, we made our way to the base of Nevis and were rewarded for our perseverance with a forecast that allowed us to crack on at 07:45am with surprisingly clear skies. During our ascent we had a conversation with a fellow hiker about what we were doing and why. It turned out her family had been profoundly affected by mental health issues, reaffirming the work of the charity and the fundraiser. We hit the summit of Ben and completed the mountain in 5h 40 minutes just behind schedule. We arrived at Scafell keeping a close eye on the weather as there had been plenty of rainfall earlier in the day. A guide from another group informed us that a river we’d have to cross on our normal route was not passable, being treacherous due to the earlier conditions, so we proceeded via a different route, setting off at 22:30. One of the team was injured halfway up so I turned back with him whilst the other 5 pressed on to get the Peak, completing it in 5 hours. All in all an excellently handled night hike by the team! With Scafell Pike under our belt we headed to Wales. However, due to the transport logistics in place and the mandated rest for our driver we had to head to Conwy and allow the driver his break which meant we couldn’t use him until the Monday morning when we were scheduled to leave. We arrived in Conwy for around 10:00am, where the group grabbed 2 hours of sleep. We then arranged for a taxi to drop us off at (and later retrieve us from) the Pen-y-Pass car park. Resolving our transport issue and allowing us to compete our challenge. With our injured man resting, the rest of the group began our ascent of Snowdon at 14:30 via the Miners’ Track with good weather ahead, and the previously forecasted thunderstorms absent from the new forecast. As we got closer to the summit some mist rolled in but visibility remained good, allowing us to hit the summit of our third and final Peak. We finished Snowdon at 19:30, returning via the Pyg Track, which proved difficult with tired legs and an encroaching shower of rain. Snowdon was ultimately completed in 5 hours! With Snowdon done we returned to Conwy, where we had a takeaway and a few beers between us. Spending the evening recounting our journey, with its incredible highs and it’s lows. Spending that last evening amongst great friends recounting memories to last a lifetime.

07428 114718 The Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust are starting their monthly meetings after a long break due to covid. We are meeting in a new, more spacious venue, Belton All Saints Centre (Church Hall). This is next to the Church on Stocks Hill which is off the High Street. We are starting our programme with the member’s slide, photo, video night which has always proved popular in the past. Anyone can bring along a selection of images on any topic to share with the rest of the group. We have a laptop and projector so all you need is a memory stick/ CD with your images on. If you would like to do this it would be helpful if you could contact Tony Lee so that the programme can be organised prior to the night. The committee will do everything they can to make sure we have an enjoyable and safe meeting. Everyone is welcome, you don't have to be a member of the Wildlife Trust so please come along and join us. Entrance fee is £1. For further information about the local Trust group and their meetings please contact Tony Lee on 01427 753831 or Chris Trinder on 01427 872051. Details about the group are also on the Lincolnshire Trust web site under area groups.
