The two priorities for the North Axholme Ward are :Crowle Town Centre- Anti-social behaviour and vehicle nuisance. Humberside Police have now introduced a Dispersal Order in Crowle town centre to help tackle the on going concern over anti-social behaviour in the area. The granting of the Dispersal Order is a result of the NeighbourPCSO PCSO 7576 hood team working closely with North Lincolnshire PC1717 Wendy Frear Paul Fearon Council and the Crowle Town Council. The Order gives Graham Godley Police officers and Police Community Support Officers the power to direct people who are congregating together in such a way that likely to result in members of the public being intimidated, harassed, alarmed or distressed. The persons removed will not be allowed to return for 24 hours and anyone under the age of 16 years can be removed to their home address. The dispersal area covers Potts Lane, the Market Place, Johnsons Lane and the grounds of St Oswalds Church Church Street Crowle. The implementation of the dispersal order has reduced calls for service and the youths are now fully aware of its existence. Residents have commented on the reduction of anti-social behaviour in the area. The Neighbourhood team are looking for the support of parents to address these community concerns with their children, and for parents to take responsibility for knowing where they are on an evening and not allowing them to drink alcohol. The Crowle Youth Club, Street Sports and other activities are provided by the local and town council. Crowle Town Council are currently looking into what facilities they may be able to provide in the future for the young people. Trentside and Chapel Lane Keadby – Suspicious incidents/fires/damage. There have been a number of calls regarding the suspicious incidents occurring at the above locations with persons wandering around at all hours of the day and night. There have also been a number of small fires in derelict buildings on Trentside and damage has been caused to the flood walls. The Neighbour team are increasing patrols in the area and visiting those who have been seen wandering around to obtain an account for their actions. If you have any information regarding who is committing these offences please can you contact the Neighbourhood Team. The Rescue Day 2010 which took place on Saturday 10th July at Seven Lakes Leisure Park Ealand was without doubt an outstanding success. The attendance figures surpassed all expectation and although there are no exact figures we believe they exceeded twenty thousand. The amount raised was £14,990 which has been presented to the Help The Heroes Fund. The organisers praised the community spirit around the event and thanked all those attending for supporting the worthwhile cause in raising such a large amount as well as delivering important messages about safety on the roads as well as near water. A date for the Rescue Day 2011 has been set for 9th July We are committed to providing a wide variety of opportunities to engage with you on a frequent basis and ensure consultation and agreement upon local priorities. This provides an opportunity to update you and discuss progress. It is intended that at least one published meeting will be held in the neighbourhood team each month. This will ensure you know where you can attend to engage and work with your local team. Meetings will include traditional public meetings at school and village halls, council meetings and community centres. To ensure that we consult as widely as possible we are always seeking new and innovative ways of communicating with the community and welcome any views or suggestions you may have. On Tuesday 17th August the Police Events Bus visited the villages of Eastoft, Luddington, Garthorpe and Fockerby in order for members of the community to visit and discuss any local issues or concerns. The turn out of residents visiting the bus to speak to the Neighbourhood Team was disappointing but those who did attend raised important issues relating to the community. . A Police surgery is held the first Monday of every month. The Neighbourhood team have decided to change the format of the surgery and for it to be a walkabout one in Crowle town centre to encourage community engagement. The next two walkabout surgeries are on Monday 4th October 2010 and Monday 1st November 2010. This change will hopefully increase the amount of contact the community has with the local policing team and give residents the opportunity to tell us of their concerns and relate any information they may have about local issues. The Neighbourhood Action Team was held on Tuesday 31st August 2010 at Althorpe and Keadby School. The date of the next meeting is Tuesday 30th November 2010 at the same location. Although not a ‘ public ‘ meeting, residents were encouraged to raise concerns or issues with their community representatives ( Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator, Parish Councillor or member of the policing team ) so they could be discussed and so community priorities identified and appropriate action considered. The Neighbourhood Team and the Roads Policing Department have continued to deal with anti-social use of motor vehicles in Crowle especially around the Potts lane car park area. Two drivers have been dealt with for offences including speeding and construction and use offences where their vehicles have not complied with the law. One of the drivers was dealt with for drugs offences after being found in possession of cannabis. Two other males have also been arrested for drugs related offences in Crowle. One has been given a formal drugs warning, the other is on Police bail for assault police and the drugs offence. A male has been charged for drink driving after being stopped and checked in Keadby. The car was been seized due to the driver having no driving licence. Two males have been cautioned for minor assaults. Three males appeared at North Lincolnshire Magistrates Court after being arrested on the site of the Keadby Sub Station site close to where copper earthing strip had been stolen. They were found guilty of being on enclosed premises for an unlawful purpose and are on court bail awaiting sentence. If anyone has any issues or concerns in their community or has any information regarding who is responsible for crime in our area, please can they contact PC Godley or any of the Neighbourhood Team and any information provided will be dealt with in the strictest confidence. Working with Pc Graham Godley are your Police Community Support Officers Paul Fearon and Wendy Frear who regularly patrols the North Ward area of the Isle and will be happy to discuss any community issues with you. Please feel free to stop and speak with them or alternatively contact either of us via 0845 60 60 222 or by e-mail graham.godley, paul.fearon or wendy.frear @humberside.pnn.police.uk. The police station at Epworth provides a front counter service on Mondays and Thursdays between 9am and 3pm.

The Isle of Axholme

Where You Live

Your Local History

Adapted by Anthony Catherall The Drainage of the Isle (continued) The past 250 years have seen continual improvement and extension of the drainage of the Isle of Axholme. In 1763 there was a record flood when the Idle and Torne broke their banks and laid waste thousands of acres. It was the culmination of years of damaged crops. It needed the disaster to make people realise that new drainage works were needed. In 1764 John Smeaton, a famous Civil Engineer, was consulted and he suggested the deepening of the drains and for some more relief drains, but finance for the scheme was not available. In 1795 an Act of Parliament provide for the enclosure of Commons including £20,000 for new drains. Acting upon Smeaton’s suggestions Foster cut a new drain in 1795. From Bull Hassocks it took the Old River Idle’s bed and then ran parallel to Vermuyden’s New River Torne to Pilfrey’s Bridge where it took the channel of the New River Torne to Althorpe. The New River Torne took the channel of the New River Idle and a new channel called the North River was cut to Keadby. The new drain from Bullock Hassocks is now called the South level Engine Drain. About the same time the ‘Folly’ drain was dug. Unofficially it was called ‘Foster’s Folly’. It ran from Bull Hassocks pumping station alongside Foster’s other drain for part of the way to Pilfrey Bridge and from there to the River Trent at Derrythorpe. A second cut to Keadby was made from Pilfrey Bridge to enable both Althorpe sluices to take the New Torne water. The New idle River was passed under the Torne at Pilfrey and thence to Keadby. About 1813 another new drain called ‘Cataline’ was dug to help the drainage of the Santoft area. It runs parallel to the Hatfield Waste Drain and is southern of the Double Rivers. Just before Pilfrey Bridge it goes under its partner and is the northern of the Three Rivers to Keadby. The drainage was so well improved by these new works that there were even complaints that the new land was to dry! However in 1828 the summer was so wet that for weeks on end, the Trent was too high to accept water from Axholme. A committee set up to look at the problem concluded that the drains ought to drain straight to Adlingfleet which is what, 200 years earlier, Vermuyden ought to have done. George Leather in July 1829 surveyed the water levels of the Trent and recommended a direct drain to the Humber. His plans envisaged a huge waterway 150 feet wide at the bottom, thus with sloping and banking would be about 300 feet wide. It would be excavated from Idle Stop to the Humber. He anticipated it as a tidal river with ships using it and Bykersdike as a route to Gainsborough. The cost estimated was around £354,000. Sixteen trial borings were actually made to plan the route. Doubtless, it would have been built, for an Act of Parliament authorised the work; but for the development and introduction of pumping stations.

Flowers for Someone Special

Do you know someone special? Someone who has gone the extra mile for others or someone who just deserves something nice. I would love to nominate Mrs Sheila Davies from Crowle for this surprise. Sheila has had a tough time, health wise, during the last few months, but this has not stopped her caring for others. For many years Sheila has cared and visited neighbours and also in the wider community of Crowle and Ealand. Her bike is her trademark! This caring extends into Crowle Methodist Church where she is a member. Nothing is too much trouble for Sheila, a lady with a heart of gold, this is why she deserves the title, "someone special". Best Wishes Sheena J Chisnell

The Arrow and Jackie’s Floral Designs would love to send someone special a bouquet. Listen to Trax FM in the morning to hear the nominations. Let us know who they are and why they deserve a bouquet. Contact

On Saturday 4th September we were thrilled to welcome the Bishop of Grimsby (Rt Rev David Rossdale) and Councillor John Briggs (representing Andrew Percy MP) to open our new kitchen, toilet and café area in the Church. Bishop David cut the ribbon and Councillor Briggs unveiled a plaque. Rev Timothy Buckley, Rector of the Parish is on the right of the picture. The project was financed by money from Leader, WREN, Voluntary Action North Lincolnshire, Garfield Westfield Foundation and The Parish Council. Part of the roof of the Church is to be renewed with money from National Church Housing and our own Funds.

Mrs Barbara Gibbons, widow of Rev John Gibbons, a previous Rector of the Parish was also in attendance as a distinguished guest. Many villagers and other friends of the Church enjoyed a concert by The Axholme Connexion, the official opening ceremony followed by a delicious tea. The new facilities in the Church make the building a much more user friendly place and we hope that many of those who supported the opening event will come back again for other landmark occasions in the Christian Calendar. The next such occasion is Harvest Festival on Sunday 3rd October at 3pm. Rev Timothy Buckley Rector of The Belton Group of Parishes

Secret Garden Help the Heroes. Every year at Secret Garden Private Childcare, we pick a charity and organise a fundraising event for it. This year we decided upon Help 4 Heroes as we had been approached by John Armson to put up a poster promoting the Rescue Day at The Seven Lakes which was to raise money for the Help 4 Heroes Charity, the decision to support this charity was also influenced by the children who attend our Nursery as the previous month they had been interested in learning about fire fighters and the police, so it all fitted together nicely. It was decided we would do a sponsored walk around Ealand with everyone dressed up as people who help us, we had children dressed up as Police people, Fire Fighters, Nurses, Soldiers and Doctors. We had a lot of children come and join us for the walk and a lot of parents who came to support us and help us walk safely around Ealand. The children had a wonderful time and we stopped off at Ealand Park for refreshments and a play which they thoroughly enjoyed. All the children were tired when they got back but I am proud to say we raised a grand total of ÂŁ624.70. When we emailed John to say how much we had raised, he greatly appreciated it and as a thank you for all the hard work of the staff and children he invited us over to The Seven Lakes to present our cheque to the Charities representative that was going to be there, he also arranged for a couple of Fire Engines and a Police Traffic Car to be there and for the Police Helicopter to land. It was safe to say the children were amazed and after we had handed over the cheque and the children had stood still for ages having their photographs taken they thoroughly enjoyed sitting in the fire engines and police car and listening to the fire fighters and police men and women and the helicopter pilot learning about all the different things they do and the different equipment they use to do their very important job. We have had a brilliant experience raising money for the Help 4 Heroes charity, linking in with a community event and the children have learnt so much, I would just like to say a big thank you everyone who came and joined us on our sponsored walk and to everyone who sponsored us it means a great deal to us all and finally a big thank you to John Armson for organising a brilliant hand over for the cheques, the children enjoyed every minute, thank you for letting us be a part of that.
