Welcome to the October issue of the Crowle and Ealand Arrow! We are truly now in to the Autumn months! I hope you enjoyed all the local events of the Summer in the Isle, there was so many to chose from. The Epworth Show and Rescue day just two of the successful days to remember of 2019. October brings Halloween, if you would like to attend an organised event, I can suggest you will have a great time at Maize Maze. I have many a happier memories there with my children. Full details are on page 7. If you are trick or treating, remember to keep safe and be courteous when out and about. Its usually the rule if a neighbours house is decorated or has a pumpkin at the front door, they will welcome callers. What every you choose to do make it a safe fun night. Enjoy the read and please note the deadline for the November issue is Thursday 10th October for distribution by Sunday 27th October. If you are interested in advertising or simply emailing me some community news, please be in touch before the date.

Isle Choral Singers

After a very busy year so far in 2019 we have had a welcome summer break and rehearsals resumed again in the Imperial Hall, Epworth on Monday, 2nd September at 7.00 pm when it was good to see members refreshed after the summer break. Anyone wishing to find out more about the choir just come along to a rehearsal, with the first term free of charge - you can be sure of a warm welcome. Details can be found on our website, the listings in “The Arrow” or contact Concert Secretary, Helen Warnes, on 01427 871485. Our next concert will be at 7.00 pm on Sunday, 13th October in the Epworth Wesley Methodist Church. This will end the year’s celebration of 350 years since the birth of Susanna Wesley in January 1699. All proceeds from the event will be used to redecorate the nursery in Epworth Old Rectory, with replica of the wallpaper discovered when research work was undertaken by archivists [see picture] so our committee consider this as a very worthwhile community event. The aim of the Isle Choral Singers is “to bring the arts through music to a rural area”. Epworth and District Flower Club News

One beautiful lunchtime in July 159 ladies and one man attended a Lunch and Flower Arranging Demonstration. It was organised by the Epworth and District Flower Club and the local NSPCC branch and at the September meeting members of the Flower Club were informed that a magnificent sum in excess of three thousand pounds was raised. It is to be divided between the NSPCC, Diabetes UK and a charity chosen by the demonstrator, Caine of Harrogate. Having delivered the excellent news Anne Everatt, the Flower Club Chairman introduced the demonstrator for the evening. Lynn Wherret had travelled from the Leicester area and began her demonstration entitled “Ladies that have inspired me”. After the vote of thanks for a very entertaining evening about flowers and inspirational women there were more than a dozen raffle prizes for lucky members of the audience. This was followed by refreshments. Members were reminded of the next meeting, an Autumn Workshop to be held in the Stephen Jones Community Hall at 7.30pm on Monday, 14th October. In addition members took tickets to sell for the Open Meeting on 11th November when Nick Grounds will demonstrate. Nick is a National Demonstrator and has entitled his evening “The Apple Tree”. Entry on this occasion is ticket only and will be at South Axholme School. As usual the evening promises to be an entertaining evening and the Flower Club aims to raise more money for their chosen charity this year, Diabetes UK. Make sure you buy your ticket. Please contact Celia for further information 01427 874042.

Hirst Priory has a well-kept secret that is now ready to share. Hidden beneath the oldest part of the house is the most amazing atmospheric vaulted brick basement – “The Vaults”. Now expertly and sensitively refurbished, the subterranean rooms are open to visitors and offer a very special place for intimate and bespoke weddings and events. The Vaults ceremony room is perfect for smaller weddings and can accommodate up to 40 guests. In addition to wedding hire the venue is introducing a private members club, and offering exclusive prebooked dining and wine bar experiences. A relaxed platter and small plates style menu has been developed working with “Taste Lincolnshire” to ensure the use of locally sourced ingredients where possible. Hazel Wheatley, Managing Director of Hirst Priory and The Vaults commented “We know we have something very special indeed at The Vaults – and I love seeing the reactions of our guests when they first discover these hidden spaces. I’m really looking forward to being able to share the experience with new visitors – cosy winter weddings, delicious sharing platters and personally selected gin and wine menus.” To find out more about The Vaults, take a look at

Hare coursing is reducing year on year in our area because of action taken by the police and the close working relationship with our rural communities. Force Wildlife & Rural Crime officer PC Brandon Ward said, “We have done really well together to reduce hare coursing and I don’t want that to stop. “As the harvest is now almost completed we want to remind our communities to report anyone who they suspect is hare coursing in our countryside. We have been out across the Force area in recent weeks carrying out patrols to prevent and deter criminals from coming into our area. “Hare coursers often use old 4x4s and carry lurcher-type dogs in their vehicles. If you see any vehicle being driven in a suspicious way in our countryside please call us and report your concerns. “We have also seen a number of recent reports of illegal lamping in the area and this too is a wildlife crime we want to bring an end to. “Poaching is a national wildlife crime priority and illegal ‘lampers’ are often involved in other criminality such as burglary and vehicle crime. “We want you to report any suspicious activity to us, particularly in the early hours of the morning if you suspect lamping is in progress. By letting us know as it is happening we can catch offenders in the act. “Prevention measures should be considered by landowners such as preventing easy access by vehicles to land by using obstacles, gates and other barriers. This is one of the most effective measures that can be taken to frustrate and deter these criminals.” Please call 101 to report any suspicious activity – if you call us we will act. Top of the Form - Again South Axholme Academy have done it again with another year of phenomenal results. The atmosphere was buzzing as students and parents arrived to collect their envelopes containing the all-important grades that everyone had worked so hard for. Associate Principal, Scott Barlow, said “There are so many success stories and so many subject areas that have performed fantastically, it’s hard to find just a few headlines to share!” Maria Rock, Strategic Lead for the 6th Form at South Axholme added “We have a record number of applicants this year, all wanting to stay with us and build upon the amazing grades they have achieved at Key Stage 4” With students making on average half a grade better progress than targets, and over 80% gaining a pass in English and Mathematics it’s easy to see why everyone is smiling ecstatically, and the results place South Axholme Academy firmly at the top of the league tables in North Lincolnshire and surrounding areas. Sarah Sprack, Principal said “We know we are an outstanding academy and days like today with results like we have secured just go to prove it! We are also proud of the diverse range of subjects in which students have gained brilliant results. In Business, Dance, Music, PE and Drama 100% of students gained a 9 to 4 grade, whilst Chemistry, Physics, Biology, RE, Engineering and IT all had over 85% of students who passed (grades 9 to 4)”

We're delighted at The Axholme Academy with how our Year 11 students performed in the GCSE Summer Exams 2019. The hard work and commitment of staff and students alike resulted in a 20% improvement in the proportion of students passing GCSE English and Maths compared to 2018. To help students succeed, teachers delivered excellent quality first teaching and ran an extensive amount of extra support during evenings, weekends and holidays. It's incredibly rewarding to see that everyone's hard work has paid off and that so many students have been able to progress onto their chosen college courses and apprenticeships. We wish all of our students every success for the future.
