Welcome to the October issue of the Arrow.

There are only 100 days left until Christmas! (on writing this article). That’s why Crowle lights Committee are in full flow organising their 2015 switch on! They plan to open the lights earlier this year on Saturday 28th November. If anyone has any spare time and would like to help please get in touch, call Chris on 07954 089618. With the scary thought of Christmas creeping up on us again, that leads me to Halloween; my favourite time of year…...I would love to see how many of you are growing pumpkins. If there are any extraordinary specimens out there please email your photo and the weight of the pumpkin and see them published in the next issue of the Arrow. No where to go on Halloween and want a safe enjoyable experience for all the family?? Why not try Shriek Week at Maize Maize. It’s a great night for everyone. See page 12 for more details on how to book tickets. What ever you choose to do, keep safe!

Community Choir Isle Community Choir formed in Feb 2012 when we were kindly given some funding to start the group from the Scunthorpe Arts Council. From there we worked on advertising to bring enough people together to build a choir!

We are a community group and therefore want to stress that we do not audition beforehand or single out any singers during the rehearsals, we just want to have fun and come together to make music enjoyable for everyone! If you can sing, if you want to sing or even if you feel like you can't sing then we are the choir for you! We rehearse every Wednesday evening (not including school holidays) at St Norbert's Primary Voluntary Academy, Crowle from 7.309.30pm. Our Musical Director, Hannah Doherty, is a Music Graduate from York and passes on her love and passion of singing to everyone else. If you or anyone you know is interested in joining the Isle Community Choir, we return back for Autumn term on the 9th Sept. Please don't hesitate to contact us with any queries; Gill Vickers on gill.vickers@northlincs.gov.uk or Hannah Doherty on hannah.doherty1989@gmail.com We look forward to recruiting some new members!

Arrow offers half price Entry fee to Epworth Old Rectory Your Arrow has teamed up with The Epworth Old Rectory to offer its readers an exclusive deal - for a limited period - to visit the historic museum at half the normal entrance fee And, as an added bonus, from now until the end of October, when the arrangement will cease, there is the added attraction of a display of some of the world's best Christian art – on loan from the Department of Methodist Studies at Oxford Brooks University. “The Methodist art collection was first established more than 40 years ago and is probably they best in the country,” said Gill Crawley, Development Manager at The Old Rectory.

Parking Issues around the area of St Norbert’s School, Crowle = Due to the summer holidays and the premises being closed this issue has been quiet with very few incidents of incorrect parking. However with school starting again in September this situation will be monitored. Please ensure that when you are dropping your children off at the above location you are parked responsibly and think of other road users. Incorrect parking or parking causing an obstruction will be dealt with in a positive manner by the local Team.

Normally the entrance fee for a guided tour is £5.50 per head but by presenting a copy of The Arrow at the ticket desk a couple can gain admission for just £2.75 each.

Information

“The Old Rectory Trustees are enormously pleased, privileged and proud to have these artworks on display here,” added Mrs Crawley.

“ This gorgeous boy is George, an older boy who is looking for his new home. George has come in as a stray and we believe he is around 13-15 years old. He is a very affectionate, cuddly cat who purrs all the time, and we are looking for a nice retirement home for him where he can spend his last few years on a comfy lap! George would be ideal for an older person wanting a companion. He does like to wander around the garden, but doesn’t go very far. If you are interested in meeting George, please call Isle Rescue on 01427 728705.”

Holidays began two weeks late for some staff at The Axholme Academy in Crowle, as they invited 20 new Year 7 students to spend time having fun and getting used to their new school during their annual Summer School Activities Weeks. Over the course of a fortnight, students created a visual and written diary to document their journey as they took part in workshops across a diverse range of subject areas such as: maths, english, art, drama, history, PE and technology. The summer school, funded by the Government and run by teachers and support staff, provided a great way to ease the students in their transition into secondary education by getting to know the Academy and its staff, make new friends, learn new skills and develop confidence. Activities included: team building games, maths brain teasers, art skills such as proportion and ratio, clay work, circus skills, treasure hunts, cookery, sculpture, creative writing, and sports events. There were also a few special treats over the course of the two weeks, including days out to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Normanby Park, Lincoln Castle and the Yorkshire Wildlife Park. “My child has loved the experience” said the parent of one student; “I was concerned over how he would cope in this new environment. I believe it has been a really positive experience. He has gained confidence and a positive attitude to his new school”

Yet again, results are really positive this year. Performance in a range of measures continue to show year on year improvement. Over 70% of our students achieve A*C grades in both English and Maths, which is an essential achievement for those planning to study A-Levels at college. Also, over 70% of students achieved 5 or more A*-C grades, a 4% improvement on the previous year. These results show that performance in our core and option subjects are great, enabling our students to progress onto their chosen post-16 courses and apprenticeships. One of our key improvement priorities for the year was to increase the proportion of students achieving the very highest grades. We were therefore delighted to see that the proportion of students achieving 3 or more A* or A grades has trebled since 2014, with over 1/3 of students managing this magnificent achievement. Our top performing student, Peter Castledine, achieved a clean sweep of top grades with 5 A*s and 6 A grades. Peter was not alone as a high achiever however, hot on his heels were 19 other students whom all secured 5 or more A* or A grades this year. Although we are justifiably very proud of the achievement of our Year 11 students this year, we have even higher aspirations for our new set of Year 11s and look forward to reporting an even better set of results in 2016. ENJOY THE ISLE COUNTRYSIDE WHILST SUPPORTING A LOCAL COMMUNITY GROUP www.axholmebridleways.moonfruit.com A local community group, Axholme Bridleways Association, welcomes guests to their meetings, which are approximately every six weeks. The Axholme Greenway project is one area the group is involved in, which will provide more safe, off-road routes for multiusers locally and will benefit future generations too. With this in mind, Axholme Bridleways Association wishes to involve cyclists, runners, walkers, dog walkers and riders in all its activities, some of which raise a few funds for local charities whilst helping our local community and visitors enjoy the wonderful countryside we are blessed with on the Isle. The group welcomes members who can give a small amount of time to jointly achieve great things. Local speakers are invited to meetings and this year the group have enjoyed talks from Lyn Dobson of L4Learners Dog Training, Jodi Shanahan of Equo equestrian event online booking system, Hayley or Wellbeings Therapies, and local Paralympic Dressage hopeful Natasha Adkinson, who at just 21 years old has many wonderful achievements as a member of the GB Squad on the World Class Equestrian Programme. Please come along and find out what is happening locally within the group and hear talks from interesting local people and organisations. The last meeting of the year will be Monday 2 November 2015 at The Old School Inn, Epworth at 7.30pm.
