Welcome to the September issue of the Arrow
The Summer has come and gone and we hope all your Summer events got off to a great start and avoided the thundery showers we experienced in August! The 34th Festival of the Plough on Sunday 21st September is the big event in September. It’s a great experience and a great event for all the family. Make sure you don’t miss it! This month we have another competition courtesy of Doncaster Races, to win a pair of tickets for the Racing Post Trophy held in October. Competition entry details are available on page 19. The deadline for the October issue is Friday 12th September. Please note the magazines are very busy if you leave it until the last minute we cannot guarantee your articles. We work on a first come first serve basis.
Best Wishes Carolyn (editor)

“This lovely boy is Blaze, a Jack Russell Cross Staffy, who is around 2-3 years old. Blaze is a lively, friendly dog, who loves a belly rub and adores his walks. He is also very playful, and loves playing ball. He could live with older kids, and has lived with another dog, so could do so again. He is not cat-friendly. Blaze is vaccinated and micro-chipped, and will be neutered shortly. If you are interested in meeting Blaze, please give us a call on 01427 728705.

Community News Crowle's answer to the Tour De France proved a great success with no less than 3 dozen cyclists taking part in the 4mile organised cycle tour around the area. The 'Grand tour de Crowle' was organised by Crowle Methodist Chapel as a community project to encourage more people to take to their bikes. The series of three separate rides on Saturday 12th July were led by Sky rider, Alan Rayment whose two sons Thomas (8) and Harry (5) also took part in the event. Harry (pictured here), the youngest cyclist, completed 8 miles on a bike he has ridden for just 2 weeks! Chapel members were at full stretch laying on refreshments at church plus manning a market stall promoting the event and greeting cyclists as they turned up for the start at Crowle Community Hall. Chapel spokesperson Mabel Clift says: "The weather was kind and despite the fact that our event clashed with The Lakes Rescue Day we are delighted with the support and response from the community. We also raised £210 for chapel funds."
Despite the rain which fell for part of the day, Crowle’s 117th Annual Show proved a real hit for those families who braved the weather. One of the highlights of this year’s event was the debut appearance of ‘Flyin Ryan’, labelled as Britain’s No. 1 Motorcycle Stunt Team.
The riders including a female member laid on two heart-stopping performances in the Main Ring throughout the day featuring a daredevil act of driving through a wall of fire. Show secretary John Shaw says: “We had a good crowd in the morning but unfortunately with the weather turning against us it did make a difference to the afternoon’s attendance. “However, at this stage it looks as though we have held our own financially which is good. We are not out to make a lot of money from the show – our main aim is to give the people of Crowle a day out. But we do need to raise sufficient funding to ensure that next year’s goes on."
Isle Rescue celebrated their 1st birthday on the 15th August. We have now re-homed 65 dogs, and 42 cats, and we thank everyone for all their support, and for all the donations of money, food, toys and bedding for our dogs and cats- everything really does help! And of course, a huge thank you to all of those lovely people who have adopted one of our lovely cats or dogs. We couldn’t continue without all of you. Mandy 01427 728705

News Page Student Newspaper Students at The Axholme Academy have once again been busy researching and preparing articles for the summer edition of the ‘AX NEWS’. On Tuesday 24th June students made the journey to Lincoln University to produce the “AX NEWS” end of term student newspaper where they design their pages. Over a period of three separate days the students interviewed staff & students regarding various topics such as school trips, teacher’s retiring, new mini-bus for the academy and the school winning the Lincolnshire Show Schools Challenge to name but a few. Copies of the newspaper will be distributed shortly to students, parents and members of the community. It will also be accessible on our school website www.theaxholmeacademy.com where you will find lots of information about the academy. Principal, Joe Sellars, said ‘this is another high quality edition of AX NEWS that really demonstrates our students’ journalistic skills and showcases the fantastic range of opportunities and activities that they can undertake. I am delighted that we were just in time to feature our success in winning the Lincolnshire Show Challenge! We know how much our parents and community members enjoy reading the publication and ensure that it is distributed widely’.

The Supergrid Regional Final Challenge at The Big Bang Fair Written by: Neve Stokoe, Bradley Cram, Lauren Hall and Thomas Arrand. At approximately 9 am we arrived at Doncaster Racecourse in order to participate in an engineering challenge at the Big Bang Fair, due to us winning the initial turbine challenge at school. For the first couple of hours we were allowed to roam the premises and observe/take part in several stalls and activities located inside the racecourse. We learnt a lot about engineering and asked lots of questions about our future career interests-ranging from music to the RAF. Then proceeding onto our main activitywhat we had arrived there for- we took part in the final of the wind farm challenge representing the UK again we excelled and succeeded as a team. We kept the design the same as our original attempt at school and it worked in our favour. We will be presented with a plaque to reward our achievement. Also, to conclude we were given freddos (which made it all worthwhile.) After the task, we stayed for a short while and had a satisfying lunch in the Lazarus stand overlooking the lush, green racecourse. Job well done.
The Axholme Academy in London for the Booktrust Best Book Awards with Amazon Kindle Students and teachers of The Axholme Academy donned their most glamorous outfits this week when they attended the star studded Booktrust Best Book Awards with Amazon Kindle in London. The awards saw the finest of the literary world gather at the famous Lancaster Hotel where winners, including best selling authors Lucy Cousins and illustrator Ed Bryan claimed their prizes. 12,000 schoolchildren nationwide voted for the winning titles to produce a host of superb winners crossing six categories including fan favourite The Fault in our Stars by John Green. The kids brushed shoulders with some of the UK's top celebrities including Great British Bake Off presenter Mel Giedroyc, who also hosted the awards and gave the students a special shout out in her introduction, former Blue Peter presenter Helen Skelton and Apprentice winner Tom Pellereau. Students were kept busy before the show by playing various party games and watching children's entertainers including a stilt walker. Teacher Mrs Brameld said the students thought it was one of the best days out they've ever had, 'The kids love reading and books so to be at an event where they could meet some of To advertise please call 01302 532676 or 07912 643010 their literary heroes was a dream come true.
