Issue 95
Husband loses wife bit by bit Savina Pemberton's Husband has seen his wife slim down from 15st 3lbs to 11st in a year since March2015 to March 2016 . She has built a whole new career sharing her experiences and helping people change their lives for the better. Savina first walked into her local Slimming World group in Crowle in march 2015, she felt uncomfortable, frumpy and completely devoid of confidence. She originally joined to support her daughter but never expected to have any real success herself. Now, after loosing nearly 4 and a half stone she has trained as a Consultant for Slimming World, the UK’s leading slimming club. She took over as Consultant for the Crowle group on Thursday 28th April 2016 and after building that group up has just opened up a morning Group from Thursday the 5th January 2017. She says: "Obesity is becoming such a huge issue across the UK. When I first joined Slimming World as a member, I never dreamed that I would end up helping other people to lose weight but now I love my job. It’s a privilege for me to be able to pass on the experience, insight and understanding that helped me, so that I can give my members the support they need to get to target. "Like a lot of slimmer's, I had tried to lose weight so many times before by following numerous diets but they were never sustainable because I’d always get tired of restricting what I ate. I thought I was destined to struggle with my weight for the rest of my life, but when I came to Slimming World it was different. I never felt like I was on a diet. The eating plan encourages you to eat lots of filling foods like pasta, rice, potatoes and lean meat and fish, you are never hungry and no foods are banned so there’s no deprivation. I couldn’t believe I’d found a way to lose weight without starving myself. "Slimming World isn’t just about changing what you eat. It’s all about getting the support to choose a healthier lifestyle like finding ways to become more active even if you’re not very mobile or don’t like exercise. "My weight loss has completely changed my life. I still make all my favourite foods such as curries, chillies, chips and making them all so much more healthier now, and I still get to enjoy my favourite Cosmopolitan Cocktail too" "On top of that, I’ve got a new career. It’s well-paid and the hours fit around my family, but best of all I’m doing something that I’m passionate about. As a slimmer myself I know how hard it can be and I couldn’t have lost over 4 stone without the members in group, Its become such a big part of my life, it’s a real supportive and everyone is always there to encourage each other. Sharing recipes and other ideas, and overcoming disappointments as well as celebrating success was all part of the journey, so there’ll be lots of support, encouragement and fun at my Slimming World group." Savina’s Slimming World group will be held at St Norbet's Parish Hall,Crowle every Thursday at 9.30am and 7pm. Well all is quiet on the Pride of the Isle front, or at least that what it will feel like to our followers. With few events going on during the summer months we have little to report on, and little seemingly going on. However as always with any committee, there is lots in the planning stages. The Charity for any new readers and followers, was founded in memory of Isle’s youngster Alexander Strong who died at the age of seven after battling a rare form a Children’s cancer. We support adults and children with cancer and disabilities, and our annual awards night recognise people who have committed acts of bravery and kindness. We are a non-salaried charity committed to supporting terminally ill adults and children, creating memories or providing aids and/or treatment to improve their lives. We are currently planning and preparing for our 2018 Pride of the Isle Awards Night, to take place Saturday 27th January 2018 – venue of which is yet to be confirmed. Tickets are now on sale and can be bought through our website www.prideoftheisle.co.uk on a first come first served basis – so be quick we expect it to be a sell out. You can find more information out about this event, how to donate or if you would like to become an official sponsor by visiting our website or by contacting our Chair of the Committee Leesa Sharpe - leesa@prideoftheisle.com. The annual Awards Night of this year, 2017, was a steaming success. Held at the Vulcan Hangar in Finningley we saw in excess of 700 people attending including ACTRESS Sheridan Smith OBE, a Patron of the awards; "I am so proud to be the Patron of the Pride of the Isle Award and to be here at this year's awards. It is a tremendous privilege. This is an absolutely wonderful charity and it's so humbling to be a small part of an organisation that does so much for so many people suffering from life-limiting illnesses. I am so grateful to Leesa, Maxine and the Committee for inviting me to be here at the Annual Awards, and to be able to pay my tribute to the wonderful people of the Isle. We should all be proud of this fantastic charity and all the good work it has done and will do in the future." Facebook comments flooded in following the annual event, “Fantastic, I thoroughly enjoyed the night as did my 15 year old, couldn't keep him away from the cars!!!! Also a very humbling experience” “Truly amazing night, so well organised in a fantastic venue, and all for a good cause. Thanks to everyone involved and how brilliant were those little award winners” We raised £23,000.00 and pledged to put this back into helping local people. It truly was an emotional, humbling yet glitzy and enjoyable evening with plenty of food, drink, and entertainment. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house! So we ask, what did we achieve at our awards night 2017… a really high bar for which next year we can only hope to smash so we can continue to help those within our local community. We couldn’t do this without you, our wonderful followers, so we once again send massive big thanks and well wishes to you all.

Sold Out Sports Presentation Evening Bigger and Better Than Ever! On Thursday 13th July 200 students and parents packed into the main hall for our annual Sports Presentation Evening. This was the first time the event has been a sell out and we could have sold even more tickets! Special guest for the evening was professional jockey George Chaloner who at 25 years old has over 1500 senior rides, including a Royal Ascot winner in 2014 that George referred to as like winning a gold medal at the Olympics. Unfortunately George had a terrible fall at Newcastle in February, travelling at 46mph on fibre sand. The result of this was a broken back and George is now full of metal, unsure whether he will ride again. After watching some footage of George winning at Royal Ascot, Mr Beesley interviewed him on stage and he was able to share some experiences and give advice to our students who are budding athletes. Lots of sporting talent was celebrated on the evening including both team and individual successes. Trophies were presented to the Boy and Girl Player of the Year in each year group as-well as Boy and Girl Most Improved Player in each year group. The night then finished with the presentation of the Outstanding Contribution to Sport Award which was this year given to departing Year 11 student Harry Poole. A full list of prize winners is below;
