We are a community group and therefore want to stress that we do not audition beforehand or single out any singers during the rehearsals, we just want to have fun and come together to make music enjoyable for everyone! If you can sing, if you want to sing or even if you feel like you can't sing then we are the choir for you! We rehearse every Wednesday evening (not including school holidays) at St Norbert's Primary Voluntary Academy, Crowle from 7.309.30pm. Our Musical Director, Hannah Doherty, is a Music Graduate from York and passes on her love and passion of singing to everyone else. If you or anyone you know is interested in joining the Isle Community Choir, we return back for Autumn term on the 9th Sept. Please don't hesitate to contact us with any queries; Gill Vickers on gill.vickers@northlincs.gov.uk or Hannah Doherty on hannah.doherty1989@gmail.com We look forward to recruiting some new members!

Free Citizens Advice Debt Service Available North East Doncaster Citizens Advice have seen a huge increase in the number of people seeking help with debt issues. During the first 3 months of the year we handled almost £1.7 million of debt with almost 500 people turning to us for help with debts during that period. The rising cost of energy, food and housing is putting extra pressure on people's finances, with no end to the problem in sight. Karen Bothamley, Chief Officer, North East Doncaster CAB, said: “Some budgets are at breaking point - people who have never experienced money worries before are finding their finances increasingly tight as rises in day to day spending like keeping their home warm, getting to work and putting food on the table is sending them over the edge. “Payday loans, credit cards and overdrafts are being used to top up people's income as wages are static. There are things people can do to get on top of their finances, including making sure they're getting all of the help available, aren't paying over the odds for things like gas and electricity and prioritising their spending to make sure there is money for essentials like rent, energy bills and water. It is important people don't wait for debts to mount before they seek help. A few early actions could stave off a future financial meltdown. “If we can help, please contact us on 01302 846745 or 01405 741457. We won’t judge, and our service is free and completely confidential.” North East Doncaster CAB is a registered charity number 1096497 providing free, confidential, independent and impartial advice on any subject to all, without discrimination for any reason. Authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority no. 617681

This lovely boy is Haro, a five year old Labrador Cross. Haro is a really friendly, happy boy, who is always pleased to see everyone, and his tail is always wagging! He is wellbehaved on the lead and a very smart dog – he loves to learn new tricks. He would love a nice garden to run in, and really enjoys his walks. Haro is not great with other dogs or cats, so would need to be an only pet. He would be best in a home with older children. Haro is neutered and fully vaccinated. If you would like to meet this lovely boy, please call Isle Rescue on 01427 728705

Student Newspaper 2015 Over the past few weeks, 20 students from Years 7, 8 & 9 have been busy preparing articles for the Summer edition of the ‘AX NEWS’. This culminated in the students interviewing students and staff on various items such as news, sport and entertainment and then on Friday 19th June travelled to Lincoln University to work with journalism lecturers who spent a full day helping our students in bringing all their articles together to produce the ‘AX NEWS’ Academy Principal, Joe Sellars, said ‘we have produced our newspaper working with Lincoln University for 6 years and each has been even better than the ones before and we expect the summer edition to keep up this high standard. Our students put in an awful lot of preparatory work before the full day with the university and this ensures that we produce a great read. An entirely new set of young reporters have worked on this paper and their enthusiasm and dedication has been exceptional.’ Copies of the newspaper will be distributed to students, parents & members of the community. It will also be available on our school website www.theaxholmeacademy.com

Literacy Gala and Spelling Bee – JLC 25/6/15 The North Lincolnshire Education Consortium Literacy Coordinators organised a Literacy Gala and Spelling Bee which was held at John Leggott College on Thursday 25th June. The college had closed to students the previous day so the schools attending had the use of the whole college to take part in exciting literacy activities such as drama, creating characters, anagram antics and many others. The aim of the day was to challenge students to have fun with literacy! Along with the Axholme Academy, schools represented at the gala were Winterton, St Bedes, Frederick Gough, Huntcliffe and John Leggott College. Each school had to organise and run a literacy based activity throughout the day. The Axholme Academy’s activities were ‘Number Plate Sentences’ where groups of students had to write down as many number plates as they could in 5 minutes (which included their journey to and from the nearest car park) then return to the classroom and make a sensible sentence using the letters on the number plate in the same order. Our second activity was ‘Interviews’ in which students had to take on the persona of an interviewer and/ or character from a book or film and prepare and present an interview. To demonstrate, Mrs Brameld and Josh Fowles ably interviewed each other as Goldilocks and Baby Bear, respectively. Our third activity was ‘Palindromes and Reversibles’ where students worked in relay teams to find the most palindromes and reversibles from their chosen book. It’s surprising how many words we read fit these categories. Mrs Brameld and students in Years 7 & 8 ran all three activities and students who visited each activity had to complete a feedback form.

The spelling bee took place in the afternoon. Students involved had to type their answers onto a hand held device and their spellings were projected onto a large screen behind them. Teams consisted of 4 students per year group Year 7 - Connor Podmore, Barbara-Ann McLoughlin, Scarlett Smit, Lucy Chessman Year 8 - Daisy Butler, Lewis Vipurs, Caitlin Edwards, Mia Cheeseman Year 9 - Sophie Walker, Oliver Shipman, Genevieve Hanks, Eleanor Roddis Year 10 - Marcus Zincke, Neve Stokoe, David Camfield, Alice Mason The Academy’s teams did fantastically well with all three year groups finishing in the top three. Year 10s won top team and top spellers (Marcus and David) and Year 7s also won top team and with the combined effort of all spellers the Axholme Academy won top school. All schools were caught out with the spelling of one particular word. Can you spot the correct spelling?’ privelage, privilege, priveledge, privalidge, privelage, privilidge’. An impromptu round at the end of the spelling bee saw Mrs Kaye and Sophie Walker team up against staff and students from the other schools. They were eventually knocked out with an incorrect spelling of ‘pharaoh’ or ‘pharoah’. You decide!

THE 2015 ISLE OF AXHOLME TRACTOR RUN When, ‘Three Men in a Pub’ conceived the idea of the ‘Isle of Axholme Tractor Run’ their dedicated chosen charity The Lindsey Lodge Hospice at Scunthorpe, was delighted with the news that yet another event was to be put into operation to assist with their never ending need for fund raising. Geoff Fillingham, Richard Thompson and Stuart Lindley all experienced farmers have an enduring pastime that grips them like a magnet. Most summer weekends they gather together with like minded friends for one of a number of tractor runs, in eastern England. What is it about tractor runs that seem to grasp the public’s imagination? Perhaps the most striking feature and very apparent if you are in the vicinity is the different vibrant sounds from the exhausts of the huge range of vintage tractors of all shapes and sizes as they pass on by. Dedicated owners spending hours servicing, painting and polishing their machines that have great visual appeal to the avid onlooker and tractor fan? Perhaps the long convoy chugging through sleepy country villages with the various contented looks of the drivers enjoying their 7 mph drive fascinate people. Whatever it is, they are fast becoming an enjoyable pursuit and now a regular feature of the countryside, in Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Yorkshire. These runs start around April each year, some of the more established runs can attract up to one-hundred and fifty machines. At 10am on Sunday 21 June 2015, The Mowbray Arms Epworth was the starting point for this year’s run. A new thirty mile route around parts of the Isle of Axholme encompassed five villages with eighty-four (84) tractors attending, some travelling over 100 miles from as far away as Norwich in Norfolk and Hutton in Lancashire, double that of 2014. All this couldn’t happen of course without the tremendous help and enthusiasm of the many, helpers, raffle ticket sellers, stewards, collectors, drivers all of them that helped to make the event so successful, they must be thanked indeed for a superb effort The organisers were inundated with comments of praise on the route, the organisation and of course the dry warm weather was a real plus. The date for next year’s run is currently being discussed, but it will be around the same period in June. Come and join us in 2016. On the 2nd July 2015 there was a presentation held at the Hospice where Fundraising Admin Manager Vivian Vincent gratefully accepted a bucketful of cash totalling £3,601,07. Watch out for the date of 2016!

Volunteers and Epworth showing community spirit!
