Editors Letter.... April is full of traditions, a few that spring to mind are 1st April, of course April Fools Day, Good Friday, Easter Day and St. George's Day. Again it is my favourite time of year, I think with the terrible winter we have all endeared, there is a glimmer of hope, blue skies and the feeling of warmer days ahead! Apparently I have heard because of the cold Winter, we will have a fantastic Summer ahead. I will believe it when I see it! News, News, News, News, News, News, News... The May meeting of the Isle of Axholme group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust will take place on Thursday May 6th when Natasha Estrada will be giving us a talk about small mammals found in Britain. Although we know what many of these animals look like from pictures or television programmes, most of us rarely, if ever, see these creatures in the wild because they are so secretive. Natasha worked for the Trust for a time monitoring small mammals, particularly water voles and bats, and she now conducts ecological surveys for various people. We have been trying to get a speaker on this subject for a few years so we are looking forward to this meeting. Do come along and join us, our meetings are open to anyone; you don‘t have to be a Trust member. We meet on the first Thursday of the month from October to May at the new hall at the rear of Haxey Methodist Chapel on Low Street starting at 7.30pm. There is a small admission charge of £1 and there is a raffle and refreshments. Bird food is always on sale at the meetings as well as at Geoff‘s house in Belton. The current priorities for the Axholme Central area are:Burglaries within the area of Westgate Road to Sandtoft Road, Belton. Anti-social behaviour/neighbourhood disputes within the Stool Close Road area. The Neighbourhood Central team are commencing their first 'walkabout' surgery on 25 March 2010 and will be on patrol in and around the Epworth Town Centre between 1500 and 1600 hours, we are conducting these as we feel that this may be more Police Community productive than the surgeries we held at Haxey Library every Support Officer month, which I have to say were not used and would allow us to 7577 Stewart engage with the community and allow the public to report their Pearson concerns to us. The neighbourhood team are also exploring the possibility of using the Police events bus to visit the villages to increase community engagement and give more residents the chance to report their concerns to the local officers.

PC Starbuck will be attending South Axholme School to present certificates to those who took part in the Lifestyle 2009. Lifestyle is a Humberside Police initiative for 10 to 16 year olds to encourage young people to help their communities during the school summer holidays. PC STARBUCK and PCSO PEARSON were invited to give a talk about policing to the Epworth Women's Network on Wednesday 10 March 2010. We would like to thank all the ladies for allowing us to visit and hope that they enjoyed the afternoon as much as we did. Officers on motorcycles have been out on the Isle to deal with quad bikes and motorcyclists who have been creating on-going nuisance to residents and we would encourage anyone who has these to cease any activity which again will be looked at positively by the police. Please may I ask that all motorists who use their mobile phones whilst driving that they are liable to both a fine and points on their licences, so please stop using mobile phones, nothing is that urgent that you need to answer or make a call on your mobile phone driving. Now that we are hopefully entering the lighter nights and better weather! can I ask that we are all aware of leaving property insecure and especially doors into our property as it only takes a very short while for people to come in and steal your property including your car keys and cars and give you what you believe a plausible reason. If you spot anyone and they are not always alone and you have any reservations, suspicions please ring the police immediately, do not take time over thinking whether you should or should not I would rather you rang in at the time. You can contact Humberside Police on 0845 60 60 222 for non-emergency calls. If you feel uncomfortable in calling the police with information about crime, then please consider contacting Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Crimestoppers is an independent charity working to fight crime. They can also be joined on Twitter, Facebook and Bebo or if you go onto the Crimestoppers website you can also fill our an on-line form. When contacting Crimestoppers you do not have to give your name and you may be eligible for a cash reward. Working with Pc Tina Starbuck is your Police Community Support Officer Stewart PEARSON, who regularly patrols the Central area of the Isle and will be happy to discuss any community issues with you. The police station at Epworth also provides a front counter service for two days a week, Mondays and Thursdays, between 9am and 3pm. The date and location for the next Neighbourhood Action Team meeting has yet to be decided and you will be informed as soon as we know.

Double unveiling at Epworth‟s Old Rectory Museum There was a double unveiling at one of North Lincolnshire‘s popular tourist attractions on Saturday (February 20) - and one was a surprise for the 90-year-old woman taking part. Local MP Ian Cawsey was at Epworth‘s Old Rectory to officially unveil a certificate given to it to mark the fact the building had been officially designated as a museum by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council ((MLA). And then Jean Watson from York was asked to cut a tape to officially open a exhibition room at the Old Rectory – famous throughout the world as the birthplace of John and Charles Wesley, who founded the Methodist movement. Mrs Watson had been asked to open the exhibition room as she had donated two prints to the museum and was there to represent all the people who had made donations. However, it was not until she arrived that she was asked to perform the tape cutting ceremony and said: ―I‘ll be thrilled and delighted to do so.‖ Earlier, before unveiling the MLA certificate, Ian Cawsey said: ―This represents a huge amount of hard work by a lot of people to get the Old Rectory accredited as a museum. ―I congratulate all involved and look forward to the Old Rectory going on to even bigger and better things in the future,‖ he added.

For decades, we've been warned about the dangers of sun exposure. Most of us diligently apply sunscreen before heading outdoors, confident that we are protecting ourselves from malignant melanoma, one of the deadliest forms of skin cancer. The experts have gotten their point across, maybe too well! As it turns out, in our effort to avoid overexposure to the sun, we have left ourselves vulnerable to arthritis, osteoporosis, diabetes, hypertension, and certain cancers, as well as other diseases. Exposure to the sun is our easiest and most common source of vitamin D, and although it is important to avoid sunburn, a little exposure to the sun each day can go a long way in protecting our health. Without sufficient vitamin D, experts fear that we may even see a resurgence of rickets in children, a disease that had become fairly rare in both Europe and the U.S. In today's world, we not only slather on the sunscreen before spending time outside, but many of us spend very little time outdoors to begin with. further limiting our exposure to the sun's rays. Depending on the climate in your area, opportunity for sun exposure sufficient to help protect against both breast and prostate cancer may be hard to come by. In the UK, the suns rays are too weak for a good half of the year to allow absorption adequate enough to aid in the body's production of vitamin D. Even in the hot, sunny climates of the Middle East and Africa, people often choose long sleeved garments to protect themselves from sunburn. While they are decreasing the incidence of malignant melanoma, they are depriving themselves of a vital nutrient. So what is the answer? We can get some vitamin D through food sources, such as milk, eggs, and fatty fish, but dietary sources alone typically fall far short of the mark. Supplements are widely available, but even with supplementation, the blood levels of vitamin D can remain depleted. We certainly do not want to return to the days of unprotected sunbathing -- we have concrete proof that allowing our skin to burn puts us at risk, yet it is clear that the vitamin D offered by sun exposure does provide some healthful benefits. As with most things, moderation is your best bet; seeking a little bit of daily sunlight seems to be the optimal solution. While it is important to avoid unprotected exposure during the hours of 11 a.m. through 3 p.m. when the sun's rays are the most direct and therefore the most dangerous, it is prudent to spend 10-15 minutes each day soaking up the sun's rays. So rejoice! Take your breakfast tray outside and start your day by enjoying a bit of the morning sunshine.

THE SAXONS AND SCANDINAVIANS IN THE ISLE OF AXHOLME Continued For the next three hundred years or so the Saxon Kingdoms of Mercia and Northumbria conducted a smouldering conflict. The Isle on the frontier was often the centre of contention and bloodshed. It is said that three east/west hillocks called the Giants Graves near High Melwood were the graves of soldiers killed in these conflicts. Now, apparently they are no longer discernible. In the late 8th century the Danes started to make raids on the east coast. The Humber and Trent provided excellent transport inland. In 797 A.D. the country around the Humber and Trent were devastated by Danish raiders. This occurred again in 838 A.D. In 870 A.D. the Danish raiders plundered North Lindsey for three years actually settling at Torksey before heading for home. In 933 A.D. the Danes swept the whole country from Durham to Lindsey. In 1013 the King of Denmark, Sweyn, devastated North Lindsey and landed at Gainsborough where he assumed the title of King. In 1014 he died and was succeeded by Canute, his son. However, Ethelred, the Saxon king returned with an army and tried to drive out the Danes. After a number of battles, Canute became King of England as well as Denmark. Danish settlement and integration was taking place throughout this period. The Danish Kings ruled England until 1042 when a Saxon was elected. After the Norman Conquest, in 1068, the King of Denmark brought a fleet and army across to form an alliance with the Saxons to try to drive out the Normans. The Danish fleet anchored at the confluence of the Ouse and Trent off Adlingfleet. Its name derived from Edgar Atheling, Saxon heir to the throne. The camp was in a superb defensive position with the Ouse to the North. Trent to the East and the Don meandering to the South. The Danish fleet had control of the waterways. However, William the Conqueror offered the Danes a vast bribe and they left without fighting. The Isle of Axholme provides a number of Scandinavian and Danish place names. For example, a name ending in – ‘by’ Keadby (- by meaning village). Other examples are; - ‘thorpe’ - Garthorpe, Althorpe, Derrythorpe and Gunthorpe (thorpe meaning hamlet). Gunthorpe also means (hamlet of reeds). Lastly – ‘toft’ - Santoft, Beltoft, and Eastoft (-toft meaning homestead). Dining Out Locally at The Mowbray Arms „Since Lou and Diane Dennis have arrived at The Mowbray Arms in Epworth, they have created a nice homely welcoming feel for the visitor to their beamed restaurant area. The furnishings are pleasant with comfortable seating for 40 plus Having eaten there twice recently, their Sunday lunch is delightful, I report complete satisfaction. The visitor is provided with a choice of two main courses with desserts to follow. The service is very friendly combined with generous portions of meat and four vegetables for the main course. I and my guests savoured the most tender beef, with Yorkshire pudding of course! To follow I sampled Diane's delicious apple pie with custard. The restaurant is open both during daytimes and evenings, except Monday and Tuesday lunchtimes. In the sizeable bar area, the beer Lou serves is good and reasonable, moderately priced in a most convivial atmosphere. Outside there is a sunny seating area facing west coupled with an adjoining large car park. An ideal venue for you and your friends to dine informally at a very reasonable cost, we will be going back!

The Mowbray Arms named after the Mowbray family in the Isle, above March 1995 with the extension to the bars underway. The exterior has changed in 2009 following a complete freshen-up. New tenants Lou and Diane Dennis took over in late summer. . The Mowbray Arms was always popular with the top end of Epworth, some other tenants were Alf & Gertie Newton in the 1930‘s, Ethel Davies in the 1960‘s and for about 30 years Bill Burton and his family stretching into the middle nineties. Below, the Mowbray as it is today, with an added lamppost. Now gaining customers once more as a local house. I can recommend the Sunday lunches. They are superb, served in a friendly welcoming atmosphere, in an appealing separate beamed restaurant tastefully decorated. Go and sample Diane‘s signature home cooked main courses and delicious sweets.

Lindsey Lodge Hospice News Letter Lindsey Lodge Hospice cares for people whose lives are affected by life-limiting conditions such as cancer, multiple sclerosis, motor neurone disease, heart or renal failure. Lindsey Lodge Hospice is an independent registered charity, number 702871, situated on Burringham Road, Scunthorpe and serves the community of the North Lincolnshire area. Drivers needed to provide occasional lifts to the Hospice. Every second Saturday in the month, between 10.30 – 1.30pm we run bereavement groups for the loved ones of all patients cared for during their final days. Some people are unable to get to these groups, perhaps because they live in an outlying village with an infrequent bus service or have no transport of their own. Though I have no involvement whatsoever with it, I am told that Horseracing is in crisis. A crisis because of a series of reasons, with the public having found other ways of betting, because horseracing is seen as a 'toffs' sport, a decline in television coverage, and because many of the races apparently are run at unusual unpopular times of the day and have no story or profile to recommend them. The strategy being considered by the horseracing industry is known as /PREMIERISATION/. By this they mean to popularise and give first rate publicity to their main stories. Premierisation in the same way that football has created a super league of excellence-well at least that is the theory. For many the church is seen to be in crisis to--for some it has lost its story, for some the churches and chapels are far from the best examples they would look to see for many and varied reasons, and for some it is an activity for others, if not a 'toffs' occupation, at least not for them. Others comment upon inappropriate service times! The 8,30 race at Wincanton being as unpopular as the 8.00 service at Owston Ferry! Easter is the opportunity to underline the PREMIERISATION of what we believe, for this is God's story, and subsequently our story, Jesus betrayed, tortured and dying on a cross, but to rise again. This not for a few but for all people in all places and all times, and though our worship often falls short of what we might hope it would be, it should always be the very best we can offer. PREMIERISATION is not altogether a pleasing word, a contemporary word creation to define an idea. But in our understanding of faith Christians locally and across the world will be seeking to make Good Friday and Easter the first, the best and the most told story of their faith.

HAXEY PRE-SCHOOL CONTINUES TO GO FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH Although the weather continues to chill us, it hasn't certainly hasn‘t hindered Haxey Pre-school‘s drive to improve their facilities! They have recently been successful in obtaining £7000 worth of resources through the "Early Excellence in Outdoor Play Scheme" and are also celebrating the gaining of lottery funding of £6554 which is being used to enhance and develop their Seaside multi function room and the Reflection/Story corner. The inside equipment has been replaced and many new toys and books have been purchased. The outdoor area is now almost complete thanks to another grant from North Lincolnshire Council. ― I can‘t believe how much the setting has improved‖ said Tina Berry, Mother to Andrew aged 3 ―I know the staff are all outstanding, as is the Ofsted grade but I have great difficulty in getting Andrew to come home now, he wants to stay and play with all the new toys!‖ The fundraising continues with their annual Easter Eggstravaganza on Wednesday 31st March. The children will sing a few songs to celebrate springtime followed by lots of fun activities for all! You are welcome to visit Joy Norouzi and her dedicated team at anytime. Epworth Primary School News World Book Day All the school recently took part in World Book day on Thursday 4th February by dressing up as a favourite book character. We had characters from many well loved children‘s books, Pirates and Princesses, Dragons and Werewolves and Cheerleaders and Soldiers. Many classic characters made an appearance including Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland and Cinderella as well as more modern favourites such as the Hungry Caterpillar and Harry Potter. Even the teachers joined in the fun dressing up as a range of Mr. Men characters to entertain the children. The children also took part in different activities during the day to promote a love of books and reading. They wrote character descriptions and drew posters. In the afternoon the teachers swopped classes to read the children stories and we finished with an Assembly to show everyone‘s costumes. A very enjoyable day was had by all. Best wishes

Two senior members of Axholme Camera Club have been awarded Honorary Life Membership, much to their surprise. Cliff Espin -Bradley and John Roberts have both been members for over thirty years, and have served the club as Chairmen and committee members at various times. " We have been friends throughout, " said John, " and remember when the club was down to a handful of members. It is lovely to have seen it grow again, into the successful club we have today." Both John and Cliff are still active members of the club, attending meetings regularly and entering competitions.|This continuing enthusiasm for photography is a wonderful achievment, especially as Cliff recently celebrated his eightieth birthday . Both have embraced the digital age and use the new technology to great effect, often producing award winning images. The annual Photographer of the Year Competition, sponsored by Tom Dennis Imaging of Scunthorpe, was well supported with over sixty entries. Judge Erica Oram from Sheffield, had a difficult task. She studied all the photographs in the competition, and commented on each one, giving helpful advice where she felt it would be of use, before short-listing ten, which turned out to be fourteen, so high was the overall standard of work. From these she eventually selected her top three, with the winner being Jean Goodburn's beautiful study of a long tailed tit. Jean was presented with the Tom Dennis Imaging Trophy and one of three prizes donated by member Alan Townsend. Alan then went on to win second and third prizes! Previoiusly, Alan Townsend had given a talk to members, 'Film to Digital', in which he shared some of his earliest images, taken on film and processed in the darkroom, alongside his more recent digital work, comparing the different techniques and results. It was a very interesting and informative talk as well as an opportunity to see more of Alan's terrific work. The format was far better than some of visiting speakers who give similar talks, and it is good to know we have such talent in the club. Best Wishes

Dear Readers, Motorways are our safest roads, mainly because everyone is driving in the same direction and there, are no traffic lights, roundabouts, or pedestrians. But motorway driving can be monotonous and if you let your mind to wander, the risks can escalate sharply. Follow these simple guidelines and your motorway driving should be safe and less tiring. When joining a motorway, assess the traffic by glancing over your shoulder to check the blind spots and consider a right turn signal before you move onto the motorway. Traffic already on the motorway has priority. Use the slip road to accelerate to a speed that matches the flow in the left-hand lane. Remember the two essential rules of motorway driving: maintain a safe following distance (two seconds between you and the vehicle in front is the minimum safety gap) and exercise good lane discipline. Traffic on motorways usually travels faster than on other roads, so you have less time to react. Look much further ahead than usual and use your mirrors early and regularly. Take extra care when overtaking large goods vehicles in heavy rain or high crosswinds. Always signal in good time before you change lanes and remember, a signal is an indication of an intention, it doesn‘t give the right to carry out the manoeuvre unless it's safe. Remember, it's Mirror, Signal, Manoeuvre. Only overtake only on the right, unless traffic is moving more slowly in queues on your right. In these circumstances you can overtake on the left to keep up with the traffic in your lane. Tiredness or stress affects your ability to concentrate. Take a twenty-minute break from driving every two hours, even if you don‘t feel tired. Some exercise and light refreshments during the break can help too. If you break down, stop on the hard shoulder and use the nearest emergency telephone to contact the Police Motorway Control. Don't stop on the hard shoulder unless it's an emergency.

It‟s been a great winter at Coneygarth Farm with all the children loving the snow. Now that spring is on its way the children have lots of things to look forward to, we are having a new play area built and a living willow den which the children will help make. The veg garden is being prepared and we will be buying some more chickens. The lambs are arriving and we will be out on the farm watching them being born. As you can see it‘s a great place for the children to learn and play. Farming in the isle at Harvester farm, Epworth Be prepared and the lull before the storm! These are the 2 sayings that have been going around our house for the last 2 weeks; this is due to the build up to lambing at the end of the month. Getting prepared involves finding the hot water bottles with the fur-fabric covers, gathering up some good card-broad boxes, making sure that all the feeding bottles and teats are functional, that we plenty of dried lambs milk, building the orphan pens and that just the list for the unborn lambs! The ewes need nearly as much special attention perhaps not as intensive but lots of checking over these last weeks ensuring that they have good grass and water, that they don‘t get stuck on their backs and that generally they are stress free. Over the next week we will be putting some round straw bales into the field so that they have a little more protection against the elements when lambing and also it gives the ewes somewhere to put their lambs once they are born. This is a very busy time for us with lots of high and lows – never knowing what nature will throw at us – this will be our 2nd lambing so we are still novices and are gaining experience all the time. The cattle are looking forward to going out and there is definitely a feeling of spring fever especially amongst the younger members of the herd. We have had another 4 calves born this month – all heifers, that have developed a passion for Wellington boots!- this makes walking through their pen an absolute nightmare if you don‘t want to fall flat on your face!

Meanwhile, Alistair Spenlow, interior decorator for the Markhams & a man whose preferences are easy to mis-read, is doing his level best to seduce Sylvie, the Markham‘s gorgeous Swiss au pair. Philip & Joanna‘s marriage seems to have lost some sparkle & they too are drawn perilously close to straying from the straight and narrow. Enter the prim & proper Olive Harriet Smythe, highly successful, ultra-respectable children‘s authoress. This could be the big opportunity which Lodge & Markham needs to break in to big-time publishing, but it is essential that Miss Smythe believes she will be dealing with a firm of the utmost integrity & propriety. Thus the scene is set for lots of high speed action, complicated deceptions, & hilarious shenanigans. All the ingredients are here to ensure you will have a riotous evening. Belton Primary Newsletter World Book Day On Thursday 4th March we celebrated ‗World Book Day‘. Children throughout the school took part in different activities. Some children brought in their favourite books, made book marks, wrote character profiles and book reviews. All the staff chose their favourite children‘s book and pupils had to guess which teacher it belonged to! We extended our celebrations into Friday, when the older children moved classrooms to share books with younger children in Key Stage one and nursery. They all had an enjoyable afternoon!
Sports Festivals Every term different year groups take part in sports festivals with other schools in the Isle of Axholme. Wake and Shake In March two teams of children took part in a Wake and Shake festival held at Westwoodside Primary School. We took a key stage one team and a key stage two team and competed against other schools in the Isle. Our Key stage one team were awarded a certificate for the most ‗creative‘ performance, and Key Stage two for the most ‗energetic‘ performance! It was a fantastic morning, all the children had a great time. Football We have a football festival approaching at South Axholme School for our newly formed football team.
