Welcome to the April issue of the Epworth and Belton Arrow. As Spring arrives and the days get longer there are plenty of reasons to be happy! After being couped up indoors for months we are able to get outside more. The first phase of England’s roadmap out of lockdown got underway on 8th March, as pupils returned to the classroom and care homes began allowing visitors once more. Hopefully in April non-essential retail, hairdressers and barbers will reopen, as will gyms, zoos, theme parks, community centres and self contained holiday accommodation. I don’t know about you but I'm in desperate need of an appointment at my hairdressers. I have resisted temptation into the DIY dye job and the at-home hair transformation. Its lovely to see more information coming through from clubs and societies, a sign we may be seeing our lives getting back to some sort of normality. Keep these articles coming in! The deadline for the May issue is Wednesday 14th April for delivery by Sunday 2nd May. Enjoy the read and keep safe!

Community News DONCASTER WHEATSHEAF SINGERS REUNION UPDATE It is with sadness and regret that the Doncaster Wheatsheaf Singers have to announce that the plans to hold their delayed 70th Anniversary Reunion on 12th June 2021 have once again had to been cancelled due to the latest Covid-19 Government restrictions. As this reunion of past and present members and associates was originally due to take place during the anniversary year in 2020 it was felt that a further postponement, rather than cancellation, was no longer an option. Who knows, maybe we could host a 75th Anniversary Reunion in 2025! The choir are, however, hoping that some concerts, including the Charity Christmas Concert at the Minster, may begin in the Autumn/ Winter of this year if all restrictions are lifted as planned. The choir are looking forward to face to face rehearsals commencing in May or June when guidance allows under the baton of their new Musical Director Ray Gallagher. Ray brings with him a wealth of musical expertise and experience and is no stranger to the choir as he has previously deputised as their accompanist. If anyone is interested in joining the DWS when rehearsals begin please feel free to contact their Chairperson Dorothy Miller on 07703358889 or email sec@wheatsheafsingers.co.uk for further information. Visit our website on www.wheatsheafsingers.co.uk or our Facebook page on Facebook.com@DWSingers Like us, I am sure there are a number of people who cannot wait to get out and start singing or attending concerts. In the meantime please stay safe and well until we can all meet up again.

The Isle Choral Singers In line with other organisations The Isle Choral Singers have not been able to have rehearsals since Covid lockdown in March 2020 but as a registered charity the Trustees are required to maintain regular contact with members and file the annual Charity Commissioners return. So on 1st March 2021 a Zoom Annual General Meeting was held and, although participants were few, there were more than adequate for a quorum. The meeting was opened by Chairman, Tony Flinn, who welcomed everyone and apologies were duly noted by Minute Secretary, Rev. Angy Long. In his report treasurer, Dr. John Lambert, advised that the group were still managing to keep “our heads above the water” in spite of the restrictions over the past year but we will definitely need to hold some fund raising events once we can resume meeting again. Mention was made of the grant aid from Epworth Town Council for £250 towards music scores, which is ring fenced for the time being. Musical Director, Robert Fields, expressed his hope that we would be able to have a Christmas concert this year with some Christmas music and carols. The Vivaldi’s “Gloria” would be performed at Easter 2022, but no firm plans can be made meantime. The current committee and trustees were all willing to serve for the coming year and so with unanimous agreement were duly elected. Members are looking forward to when we will able to meet and all agreed that, once it is permitted for choirs to sing inside, an invitation will be circulated to members [along anyone else interested in joining us] to hold rehearsals over the summer period when we normally have a break. The annual members’ Summer Meal was felt to be something to look forward to. Obviously it is not possible to make any firm commitments on future concerts etc. at this time – so please…………..WATCH THIS SPACE!!

Some Easter Thoughts A few years ago, in a wet and windy January, I went off on retreat with a colleague to Scargill retreat centre in North Yorkshire. It was an amazing 2 days with some space to think and pray. We were very fortunate on the Friday morning to have a break in the weather to take a walk up the hill at the back of the centre where we saw (from a distance) a family of 5 deer, who bounded off as soon as we got too close, making a mockery of our slipping attempts to negotiate the slopes. Having time as we walked, not being conscious of the next meeting in the diary or the work still sitting on the study desk, meant we were able to properly look around us as we wandered and there were some real revelations to be seen: In amongst the mossy stones of a dry-stone wall was one which was wonderfully heart shaped. A piece of wood next to the charcoal burner which was only partially burnt, with streaks of orange and gold glowing through the fine layer of charcoal on the top, looking as if there was still fire in its heart. Nearby a tiny fern leaf which looked for all the world as if someone had spray-painted it gold. These 3 things come to mind as I turn my thoughts towards the Easter season. The heart shaped stone symbolic of the love of God which is at the heart of the events of Easter. Love which was rejected by those in authority because it attempted to turn the established order of things on their head and make the world a better place for everyone. Love which refused to give up, achieving the ultimate victory of overcoming death with life in all its fullness. The piece of charcoal symbolises the fire of Spirit which enabled Jesus to persevere in the tasks to which he was called, and which can be found in each one of us too as we persevere in difficult circumstances. And the gold fern leaf for me symbolises the transformation offered to each one of us, small and ordinary as we often think of ourselves, yet in each of us God sees something beautiful and precious. 3 things which, in their own ways are both ordinary and extra-ordinary, a stone, some partly burnt wood, and a leaf, things which surround us all the time, yet also beautiful and unexpected. All speaking of God and the possibility that things can and will be better.

Wishing you a blessed Easter, Rev Angy On behalf of Epworth Christians Together.

RSPCA – Fostering love

Theresa was found living in awful condi ons with old injuries le to heal without treatment. It was clear that she would need substan al help and fast. Theresa was unable to walk on her front leg due to an old injury that had caused her bones to fuse together incorrectly. Not only was this painful for Theresa but it was also having a detrimental effect on her ability to walk. Theresa was taken to RSPCA South Yorkshire Animal Centre mid and in pain. It was determined by Peak Vets that Theresa would have a be er chance at a happy life if the fused leg was amputated. Theresa recovered from the opera on with RSPCA foster carers and her sweet and affec onate nature shone through. In fact they soon realised she was part of the family – permanently. Although she has a way to go, Theresa is making leaps and bounds in her mobility and is now able to enjoy her walks again; all with her new forever family. The local RSPCA Centre is looking forward to re-opening charity shops and offering centre services such as dog training as soon as allowed under the Government road map. The team con nue to rehabilitate and re-home local animals in need as they have done throughout the pandemic. There are many ways to help the RSPCA mission including volunteering, leaving a legacy, dona ng cash or goods, sponsoring through the Safe Haven programme and a ending events. There are charity shops at Bawtry, Maltby, Rossington and Thorne as well as an eBay shop. There is a pet supplies store at the Animal Centre and online. There is also a pet crema on service and a memorial garden for your beloved pets. To donate £5, text ‘RSPCADRB’ to 70085.

Rescue Day 2021 – CANCELLED It is with regret that Rescue Day 2021, which was due to be held on Saturday 10th July at 7 Lakes Country Park, Crowle has been cancelled, despite the government’s four-step roadmap to ease restrictions across England and provide a route back to a more normal way of life. Stage four, which allows the return of larger events, is due to take place no earlier than the 21st June 2021. Several of our organisers are employed by our emergency and health services and along with our stakeholders, who support the planning and delivery of Rescue Day, remain under extreme pressure at this time, therefore regrettably a joint decision has been taken to cancel this year’s event. Chris Long, Chair of the Rescue Day Society, said “The team and I are hugely disappointed that we will not be able to bring Rescue Day to you again this year. Cancelling the event is one of the hardest decisions to make, however it has been a tough year for all of those involved with the event. We wish to thank our hosts 7 Lakes Country Park and all our organisers, officials, volunteers, exhibitors and their families for their continued support during these unprecedented times.” Rescue Day remains committed to promoting the great work of our emergency and voluntary services, raising money for charities and good causes, it has funded many lifesaving public defibrillators and equipment which have been placed in local communities. We know our visitors and exhibitors will be sad to hear that this year’s event has been cancelled once again, however we are pleased to let you know that Rescue Day will hopefully return next year on Saturday 9th July 2022 and we look forward to welcoming you all back very soon. Please keep an eye on our website rescueday999.com and social media accounts facebook.com/rescuedayuk/ and twitter.com/Rescue_Day for more information.

Crowle Peatland Railway - It's full steam ahead! Because of the COVID lockdown, Crowle Peatland Railway has, like many other organisations, had to stop much of the work that we were doing. Now with the government announcement of its roadmap to ease lockdown restrictions, we are now able to start to put in place our plans for reopening the Crowle Peatland Railway site and to plan the official opening. We will also be able to start work on the railway extension for which planning permission was granted last year. After an official opening, we will be holding public open days on Saturday 1st May and Sunday 2nd May with appropriate Covid secure precautions in place. This will be an opportunity not only to see how we are getting on but to visit our cafe which we hope will be open on a regular basis, not only for those visiting the railway but also visitors to the moors and those who need to get out of the house! The recently installed decking provides a great area to sit outside sipping coffee and taking in your surroundings. We are always looking for new members so it will also be an opportunity for you to see how you can volunteer! Note that if the dates around the government roadmap change then our dates will inevitably have to change too.

We have moved on a further month and we can now see light at the end of the tunnel with regards to the restrictions we have been under, on and off for a year now! WOW, who would have thought we

would have had a 2nd Mothers’ Day under lock down? It is great news that the Prime Minister (and our is giving us hope for travel this Summer !

Lots of people are booking UK breaks away for their family but to others they still want to get away further afield to the Mediterranean sun and beyond. I would personally await booking this summer until we know where and when we can travel too and to some this may mean a vaccine or a COVID19 test pre travelling. We will not know the finer details until May and travel operators and agents are likely to be inundated with bookings at that point. I am not sure when we will see restrictions lifted for travel to the USA, New Zealand or Australia, this may still be some time until we can safely travel there. In the mean time, there is a huge shift in holiday types, many people opting for a more expensive holiday further afield, given their 2020 and 2021 spending for holidays has merged into a larger amount. Clients are also booking more adventure and touring style holidays, getting the best of both worlds with being immersed in the culture of Thailand, Cambodia, Borneo and South Africa being top sellers and enjoying a beach/relax break within this. Remember to book with an agent who is a member of ABTA and packages that are ATOL bonded. Do your research with FDCO in advance on the destination you have in mind and above all make sure you have adequate insurance in place. Please do head to my page on Facebook www.facebook.com/luanthornhillathaystravel and if you would like any ideas. I have plenty of holidays on my page or get in touch with me and I can put something together for you.

We are a small, friendly and active club, founded in the 1930's and our season starts from 1st May to 30th August. Our activities vary from league matches, internal competitions, visiting other clubs for friendly days out, have our own Gala Day and enjoy some very good Fun Days with our members. Bowling is not just for the elderly and we would like to welcome and encourage new members to join us, male and female, all age groups (children from age 12 years). Our roll-ups, which are run twice a week, have been well supported and we hope to do the same again this year in compliance with any COVID 19 rules and regulations which have been set out by Bowls England. This is a good opportunity to learn a new sport, make new friends, to exercise according to your own ability and all at a very reasonable cost. Social membership is also available if you prefer. Why not come and have a go, you will be made very welcome with bowls and instructions initially provided. Contact Liz or Sue who will be pleased to give you any further information you require.
