A NEW PHYSIOTHERAPY SERVICE FOR THE ISLE! Are you, or is someone you know suffering from back pain, a sports injury, whiplash or arthritis? If so, Steven Speers can help. Steven is an experienced musculoskeletal Physiotherapist who also works for a local Primary Care Trust. He has successfully implemented a physiotherapy service at two outlying GP practices as part of his NHS role. Living on the Isle, Steven understands the need for such a service in the rural setting and is delighted to be bringing his private physiotherapy practice to Epworth Leisure Centre.
“It‟s a fantastic opportunity for me to work within my own locality” Steven says. “Epworth is at the heart of the community and already provides many key services. I understand the difficulties facing patients in rural areas such as the Isle of Axholme who have to travel some distance for physiotherapy treatment. It‟s especially difficult for the elderly and people without transport. Patients are often faced with long waiting lists which is as frustrating for Physiotherapists as it is for patients. It‟s proven to be vastly effective treating patients soon after injury or diagnosis as delaying can add further complications and often prolong recovery. For this reason, I think Epworth is the ideal location for a private physiotherapy clinic and I look forward to serving my local community”. Steven trained at the University of Bradford where he met his wife, a Radiographer. After graduating, they moved to Steven‘s native Isle of Man where they worked for 3 years at the island‘s Nobles Hospital. It was here Steven completed his junior rotation, sampling the different disciplines of physiotherapy including orthopaedic (bones and joints), paediatric (children) and stroke rehabilitation. The Isle of Man, being most famous for the TT races gave both Steven and his wife a great deal of experience in motorcycle related trauma. In 2005, the couple returned briefly to marry at Haxey. Steven‘s wife, originally from Westwoodside, convinced him to swap one ‗isle‘ for another and in 2007 they both moved back to England and settled in Owston Ferry where they now live with their daughter. Steven has gained plenty of experience since moving to Lincolnshire. He has undertaken a postgraduate course in the use of acupunture and is a member of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (AACP). He plans to offer this service to his private patients. Steven decided to specialise in musculoskeletal physiotherapy and is now holds a senior position overseeing junior members of staff. ―Junior Physiotherapists and students certainly keep me on my toes‖ laughs Steven. ―Professionally it‘s good for me as an individual as teaching others keeps the theory in the forefront of my mind. It‘s constant revision for me‖. Steven is required to make presentations to colleagues and students as part of his ongoing learning. As with all healthcare professionals, Steven is required to produce a Continuous Professional Development (CPD) portfolio to prove his commitment to the profession and demonstrate ways he has improved his practice. He is a member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists (CSP) and Health Professions Council (HPC) so patients can be assured he is qualified and a true professional. Patient confidentiality is guaranteed. Details can be found at www.csp.org.uk and www.hpc-uk.org

Volunteer Pam Taylor played the role of Betsy -a servant to the Wesleys- met each school group and prepared them to step back in time to meet Mrs Wesley, who was played by the Rev Claire Potter, curator at the Old Rectory Museum. She invited them to get dressed up at 18th century children, issued them with their slates and chalk and taught them a little Greek – as schoolchildren at the time would have been. About 120 youngsters enjoyed the experience throughout the day. Earlier, on the first day of the show, many teachers and other interested people were given schools‘ pack and leaflets. ―We were also given a short time on the agenda of the teachers‘ training programme to talk about the Old Rectory and the schools‘ work,‖ said Rev Potter. ―We were extremely grateful to the Lincolnshire Show Schools‘ Challenge and Education Business Partnership for inviting us to take part,‖ she added.
YOUNGSTERS were given an opportunity to step back into the past and sample schooling as it was taught in the 18th century at last week’s Lincolnshire Show. For staff and volunteers from the Epworth Old Rectory museum had been given space within the Discovery Zone at the Schools‘ Challenge area and screened off one of the two tents allocated to them to recreate a 300-year-old schoolroom. For Susanna Wesley, mother to the founders of the Methodist movement John and Charles, used to run classes from her kitchen table in the Old Rectory and it was into this world that the youngsters were transported.

The Alzheimer's Society is the UK's leading care and research charity for people with dementia and those who care for them. There are 750,000 people with dementia in the UK with numbers set to rise to one million by 2025. In the East Midlands there are over 54,000 people with dementia and it is predicted that this figure will rise to 71,000 by 2017. The Society's fight for a better world for people with all types of dementia takes a wide range of forms. Through our network of local services, we touch the lives of over 30,000 people every week, providing practical services and support for people with dementia and their carers. Every year, more than a million people make use of the information we provide. Through campaigning and lobbying we strive to influence government policies and raise awareness of the challenges faced by people with dementia and the people who care for them. And through our research programme we work to improve the knowledge we have about dementia and its treatment - and pursuing the ultimate goal of finding a cure. Our vision is of a radically improved world for people with dementia. A world where they have their rights recognised, where they can fully contribute to family and community life and where they can live with dignity, free from discrimination. A world where they, and those who care for them, have their needs fully met. A world, ultimately, where dementia can be defeated. STATISTICS: There are currently 750,000 people with dementia in the UK. There are over 16,000 younger people with dementia in the UK. There are over 11,500 people with dementia from black and minority ethnic groups in the UK. There will be over a million people with dementia by 2025. Two thirds of people with dementia are women. The proportion of people with dementia doubles for every 5 year age group. One third of people over 95 have dementia. 60,000 deaths a year are directly attributable to dementia. Delaying the onset of dementia by 5 years would reduce deaths directly attributable to dementia by 30,000 a year. The financial cost of dementia to the UK is over £20 billion a year. Family carers of people with dementia save the UK over £6 billion a year. 64% of people living in care homes have a form of dementia. Two thirds of people with dementia live in the community while one third live in a care home.

Have you visited Crowle lately? Crowle Market Place opened on Saturday 3rd July at 12.30pm. It was wonderful to see so many locals at the event to support the new market square!
Councillor John Briggs said at the event : "I was delighted to attend the opening of the Crowle Market Place Development, which was as a result of tremendous work by the Delivery Group, North Lincolnshire Council officers, Clugston Construction and architects. Without doubt the financial input from Yorkshire Forward made it all happen and their support should be fully recognised by all. I believe this stage of the ultimate project will prove to be a real turning point for the future for Crowle. I hope to see the area fully utilised by all sections of the community and I hope to see it used by traders, groups and other parties. How wonderful it would be to see events take place there on a regular basis, such that the community and tourists make it a place to visit over and over again. I want to see it bustling again The vast majority I have spoken to think the new Market Place is wonderful and whilst I respect those that have alternative views, nevertheless I do consider that it will make a real difference to North of the Isle for our future and that of our children"

These are the current Neighbourhood Action Team priorities for the Central Ward of the Isle of Axholme. Sandtoft Road/Westgate Road, Belton– this is a particularly well used road within Belton to both residential and business locations. There are reports of vehicles who travel along this road when they are not permitted to do so because of the weight restriction in place and those that break the speed limit. Together with out partners we are addressing the issue and an increase in roads policing officers in the area has been requested. A neighbourhood watch group has been set up in the area to tackle the problem which saw police attend its inaugural meeting.

Where You Live
Your Local History
Adapted by Anthony Catherall THE DRAINAGE OF THE ISLE OF AXHOLME (continued)
The most successful drain was from Tudworth to Althorpe because it carried no water from a river. Vermuyden however made some fundamental mistakes. He took two drains and the New River Torne to Althorpe instead of following the lie of the land to Adlingfleet four feet lower. In the case of the New River Torne he merely made raised banks on the surface of the land to contain the river instead of excavating the hard rock and gypsum. The lands of Vermuyden around Hatfield and Thorne seemed to have been fairly effectively drained, but surrounding areas were still flooded which were not previously. The high embankment on the Dun‘s right bank protected lands to the east, but lands to the west around Snaith, Stainforth, Pollington, Sykehouse and Fishlake were flooded whereas previously they had experienced no flooding. In 1630 Richard Bridges wrote to the Lord President of the Council of the North describing the scene around Sykehouse: ― I rode with great difficulty and danger of water; where I was, and yet am, a woeful spectator of the lamentable destruction of my native soil and country. All sorts of people in pitiful distress; some to save their lives; some their goods and cattle; some to get food for their hungry bodies‖. He also wrote how mothers were trudging middle deep in water, how the floods had carried corn and hay both cut and standing away. The waters of the New River Torne proved too much for the embankments and much of the land west of Epworth was heavily flooded. The outfall at Althorpe was too small; this also helped to cause flooding. Opposition to the drainage by the local people seems to have been very extensive. The Islonians claimed that their common lands were being taken away despite the Deed of John de Mowbray granting them free use of the commons. The Islonians would also loose their fishing and wild fowling activities. Compensation of £400.00 was granted to cover this. The Islonians were allocated the lowest and therefore the wettest land in the share up. The Court of Sewers dealt with grievances about the drainage and sometimes they compelled the Participants to make improvements. The work seemed to go ahead despite their protests. Violence soon broke out. Dutch workmen were assaulted and their carts and barrows burnt. Vermuyden didn‘t help matters by saying that anyone who petitioned the Privy Council in London, against him would be hanged. An embankment near Haxey was broken down fifty times says Sir Philibert Vernatti, one of the participants. Workmen were thrown into the drains and held under with long poles. Mock gallows were set up to terrify the workmen. This damage along with unforeseen difficulties and improvements left the Participants gaining little financial reward from their adventure. Continued month 20 next Please mention

Albert Morris tells us the story of Bill Chapman who used to go poaching locally and one day whilst walking in a ditch he accidentally blew his right leg off below the knee with his shotgun, from then on he was called ‗Pegleg Chapman‘. His cart we see here outside the Wheatsheaf while he pops in for a pint, it was used to transport coal to the locals. Pegleg, used to suffer from severe asthma and after taking several deep breaths whilst carrying a hundred-weight of coal on his shoulder even with his disability, he wasn‘t averse to telling the householder as he passed the door, ―this week it‘s gone up tuppence a bag lady.‖ Peglegs‘ cart has gone in the lower picture of the Wheatsheaf in March 2010. Albert has replaced Pegleg as a local and enjoys his pint in the Inn, where I‘m sure he relates the same story to those who gather round.

The Marshall family, from Belton, Doncaster, receives award from HRH The Countess of Wessex at St James’s Palace for their fundraising efforts for a small charity helping disabled children sit, stand and walk. The Marshall family, from Belton, Doncaster have been presented with an award by HRH The Countess of Wessex at a reception held on 13th July 2010, at St James‘s Palace. The reception, to celebrate 10 years of the disability charity, MOVE Europe, acknowledged the difference the charity‘s work has made to the lives of thousands of disabled children, their families and care teams throughout the UK and Europe. The event was attended by the charity‘s patron, HRH The Countess of Wessex, who presented awards to groups for their outstanding contribution in supporting the charity. HRH The Countess of Wessex presented five awards to various branches of the MOVE network who have gone the extra mile to support the development of MOVE over the years, whether it be supporting us out in the field or raising funds to ensure our work can continue. This includes the award to the remarkable Marshall family who have shared much with MOVE Europe. Jack Marshall is 12 years old and has Moebius Syndrome, a rare condition that affects his life in many ways. He is also blind in one eye, has dual hearing aids in both ears, and has a lack of cerebellum which drastically affects his balance and co-ordination. The combination of Jack‘s disabilities meant that whilst growing up he was unable to move independently and relied on a wheelchair. Through the MOVE Programme and with much hard work and support Jack has learnt how to walk, to climb stairs, to run, kick a ball, jump and balance, just like any other child his age, something that would have never been thought possible. Last year Jack used his new found skills to good effect by completing the Great North Junior Run to raise funds for MOVE and this year he is taking part in the Great Sunderland Junior Run, again to raise money for MOVE. Jack and his sister, Jaimie (16), are ambassadors for MOVE; together they work hard to raise the profile of the charity and fundraise to enable MOVE to help provide other children with the same mobility opportunities that Jack has already had. Jaimie has recently received the ‗Diana Award‘ for her charity & community work. Jack and Jaimie‘s parents support their children in all of their endeavours and Mum Linda is very involved with MOVE and is currently helping to organise MOVE Europe‘s first fundraising Ball to be held later this year. This event provided an opportunity for the charity to thank many of the people who have dedicated their time and effort to help further its aim to provide the MOVE Programme to all of those able to benefit. MOVE Europe is a small UK based charity that promotes the MOVE Programme, which is designed to provide severely disabled children with the opportunity of independent mobility by working towards personalised goals. These goals can be anything from lifting their head independently for 30 seconds to walking a short distance with only their hand-held for support so they can join their friends to play. The process integrates the combined knowledge of the family, education and therapy to help children who have complex disabilities learn to sit, stand, walk and transfer as independently as possible. Evidence shows that within the first year of accessing the MOVE Programme, 72% of children increased their mobility through the programme. Transforming a child‘s life in this way can cost as little as £250 a year per child. Other awards went to the Derbyshire Team for their development of the MOVE Programme throughout the county for everyone aged 0-65; the Palestine Development Team who were responsible for allowing the development of 6 rehabilitation centres with the MOVE Programme for children in Palestine; the Macedonia Development Team who have helped to raise the charity‘s profile in the country and also the Friends of MOVE Hampshire group, who have tirelessly organised fundraising activities providing over £40,000 in three years to enable the charity to develop the programme in Hampshire. MOVE Europe‘s CEO Peter Holland comments, “We were thrilled to hold this event at St James’s Palace. The MOVE Programme aims to get children moving around in different ways, thereby reducing health problems, including a potential decrease in the need for surgery It enhances the quality of a child’s life and improves communication and social skills as the children gain the ability to interact with the world around them. The children and adults we work with would not be able to experience these benefits if it wasn’t for supporters like the Marshal family; we were delighted to be able 22 Please mention “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements to show our appreciation with the help of our patron.”

OUR ATLAS During holidays I find a road atlas is an essential companion (preferably with someone who is able to read it and give clear directions). Even though Satellite Navigation instruments have made an atlas redundant for some, they still sell. One of my everyday helps is a street map of all Lincolnshire. Because it is so detailed a good pair of glasses is necessary to get the most out of i!. We will all have had that experience of finding the place we want to go to is in the fold of the centre of the atlas, (frustrating) or even worse just off the page, seemingly having fallen off the map. David the psalmist wrote that wherever we go, whatever we do, we are always on God‘s atlas, and always have been. He wrote You have traced my journeying and my resting places, and are familiar with all my paths‖ (Psalm 139). In the same psalm he writes that whether we go to the frontiers of the morning or dwell at the limit of the western sea, even there God meets us-it all remains his map. The posh religious word describes this God as omnipresent, but it simply means he is everywhere You may travel in strange and exotic lands this summer, or stay in Haxey/Westwoodside, wherever, it is all safely on God‘s atlas. Rev David Leese Wesley Manse, Epworth.

Rescue Day 2010 which took place on Saturday the 10th of July was without doubt and outstanding success. Attendance figures surpassed all expectation, we do not have exact figures, however, we believe they exceeded 15,000. Feed back we have received to date from all concerned has been extremely positive, both exhibitors and members of the public have stated that they had a most informative and enjoyable day. The main objectives for the day was to raise safety awareness to members of the public by providing displays such as Water Rescue demonstrations and Road Traffic Collision exercises, along with raising funds for Help for Heroes and other charities such Lindsey Lodge, LIVES, and the British Heart Foundation. Our objectives were met in full throughout the day with both arenas providing informative and demonstrative displays, additionally Lincolnshire, South Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Services along with Humberside Police, East Midlands Ambulance Service, Sheffield Hallam University and other organisations such as the British Heart Foundation, LIVES, Coast Guard, Doncaster Sub Aqua Club all provided displays, information and talks to the public which all contributed immensely to the days success. Donations are still being counted with more money yet to be accrued (Auction Items) which will be auctioned on the evening of the Raft race (24th July 2010) and the Pink Ball (7th August 2010) as such an exact figure will be promulgated shortly after August the 7th 2010. The extreme challenge (Cross Country run) which took place on the morning of Rescue Day which provided 128 entrants with mud, water, bog obstacles and more mud proved very challenging, however, indications are that the event was very different though really enjoyable and delivered a real sense of achievement by all who took part . The invaluable assistance from Dave Tune (Metres to Miles) cannot be understated and all who helped, which was very much appreciated. The Aerial displays provided by 202 Squadron, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (Spitfire) along with the Police and Lincolnshire Air Ambulance Helicopters were absolutely superb and once again feed back has been excellent on all counts. The Red Devils conducted an outstanding Parachute display culminating into a water drop and rescue by Humber Rescue, Doncaster and Thorne Sub Aqua clubs ably assisted by the 7 Lakes rescue team on Jet Skis. The Red Devils then met with the public signing autographs and providing photo opportunities All organisations and personnel taking part should be extremely proud of their contribution and on behalf of the Rescue Day Committee and for the record I would like to express my thanks to them. It would be remiss of me not to mention all those volunteer and youth organisations who also contributed significantly to the events overall success such as FODSA, the Army and Navy cadets, Lost and Lonely Scooters along with the Staff at 7 Lakes Country Park all of which I am very grateful to, as such I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation and thanks. It is recognised that the hard work applied by the Rescue Day committee to the planning and delivery of the event was by and large outside their Day Job and again I am very grateful to all for their dedication in their application to Rescue Day along with their contribution in making it a resounding success. Whilst I would not want to single out anyone in particular several members of the committee most certainly went beyond the call of duty and some, they know who they are and for that and to them I am internally grateful. Finally I would like to take the opportunity to pass on sincere thanks to local residents and all those attending from the public for coming to Rescue Day for their understanding regarding additional traffic build up and your cooperation and in making the event a fantastic and enjoyable day.

Year 6 Whitby Residential Our Residential visits for all the Juniors were concluded with our traditional Year 6 visit to the Seacliffe Hotel in Whitby for 4 days. The children visited a range of museums and local attractions including an evening tour on an open deck bus. They still had time to relax on the beach and paddle in the sea to cool off during a very hot week. I am sure the children will look upon this as a highlight of their Primary School career at Epworth. It is an event Year 6 children always look forward to. Our best wishes go with the Year 6 children as they leave us to go to the next stage in their education at South Axholme school. With best wishes for a restful Summer holiday.

Women’s Institute (WI) Report July meeting On the 29th of June, sixteen members of Epworth Women‘s Institute were given the rare treat of a guided tour of The Old Rectory Museum. We had been invited to go for the purpose of assisting with customer research. The Rectory management team need to know what the public thinks of the museum, what they are doing right, and if they are doing anything wrong. We were given a guided tour of the house, our guide being ―Betsy‖ the Wesley‘s housekeeper. The tour was very enjoyable, being both informative and interesting. We learned a great deal about the history of the house, and lots of the history and gossip about the Wesley family. Some also had a look around the gardens which are almost as interesting as the house. We were also allowed to see the plans for the development of the Rectory as it is being restored to its former glory. We were ―paid‖ for our opinions in tea and cake before a good half hour discussion of the museum, and what we felt it needed to continue with, or indeed add to, its appeal. The meeting of July 13th took the form of a treasure hunt, with a goodly number of teams taking part. For this event members were allowed to bring along friends and family to assist in the hunting, and they were needed. The clues were cryptic, some might even say warped, and took the teams through a number of villages in the Isle. It was necessary to know something of local history, a little bit of botany and be brave in the face of creepy crawlies. It was a successful hunt and enjoyed by all, especially as we finished with refreshments in the Mowbray Arms Hotel. The winning team was Jill and Steve Garbutt, who finished in the remarkable time of 1 hour with their dandelion clock superbly intact! There will be no official meeting in August due to holidays. Next meeting is Tuesday, September 14th at the Red Lion at 7-45pm.

As the summer recess approached members at Axholme Camera Club held their Annual General Meeting. Andrew Kershaw, Competition Secretary, was pleased to announce the winner of the Emlyn Perrot Annual Trophy for the highest scoring member overall. This year the winner was Andrew Kershaw of Low Burnham. Individual winners of the Tom Dennis Imaging of Scunthorpe Vouchers were, in Monochrome, Andrew Kershaw and in the Colour section Andrew Kershaw! A clean sweep for Andy, who has now resigned as Competition Secretary due to pressure of work starting a new business, Career Development Services. David Ulyett, retiring Vice Chairman, presented the Picstop.com Prize to a valuable member who has consistently supported the Club and the Members over the last year in many different ways. Kenneth Thompson of Epworth was both surprised and pleased to receive this recognition. The last club competition of the year was held earlier, the subject a projected digital image poster or promotion. The winners of this unusual competition were Jean Goodburne of Hatfield with 20 in both colour and monochrome sections, with Peter Webster, Judy Newton and Andrew Kershaw runners up. There were a number of changes to the Committee at the AGM this year, although Allan Rowsell remains the Chairman for another year, with Peter Webster as Treasurer. George Fiddler takes on the role of Vice Chairman for a second time, with Geoff Trinder as Co- Vice Chairman, while husband and wife team, David and Jan Neale become Competition Secretaries handling both internal and external competitions. Charmian Roberts, Ken Thompson and Helen Turton form the rest of the Committee. Work on the programme for next year and 2011/12 had already been started, and a good mix of speakers, workshops and competitions is planned. The first meeting of the new session will be on Wednesday September 1st 2010 at 7.30 pm in Haxey Church Hall. Members old and new will be welcomed by this friendly club. Ring the Chairman, on 0142 752400, or just come along. Everyone is welcome to attend what promises to be Vice Chairman David Ulyett presenting the an very interesting evening on Tuesday 21st Picstop.com Prize to Kenneth Thompson. Taking your Test Dear Readers continued, Mr Bean was the first person to pass the driving test in 1935… fact! But it‘s not that Mr Bean, it was Mr J Beene who paid a grand total of 37p (7d / 6p in old money) to take the test. there were no test centres in 1935 so you had to arrange to meet the examiner somewhere like a post office, train station or town hall. the test was suspended for the duration of World War Two and didn‘t resume until 1 November 1946. In 1975, candidates no longer had to demonstrate hand signals The theory test was introduced in 1996, replacing questions about the Highway Code, during the practical test candidates could book their theory test online for the first time in December 2001 the pass rate in 1935 was 63 per cent compared to 46 per cent in 2009. 1969 saw the first driving test set for an automatic vehicle since 1935 more than 46 million tests have been taken In 1935, when Leslie Hore-Belisha, became the new Transport Minister, he introduced the driving test – first in March as a voluntary test and then it became compulsory in June. During the 1930s safety glass was made compulsory for windscreens after terrible injuries had been caused by accidents in cars with ordinary glass. Seat belts did not appear until the 1950s but were not made compulsory in front seats until 1983. in September 2003. Arm signals out of the window were withdrawn from the test in 1975 and more modern additions to the test have included a theory test in 1996, the hazard perception section of the theory test in 2002 and questions about vehicle safety and maintenance Changes to the test and other safety initiatives, such as improvements to vehicles, have resulted in a reduction in road deaths in Great Britain, which now has some of the best road safety records in the world. In 2008 there were 34 million cars on the road and 2,538 people were killed in road accidents When announcing the introduction of the driving test, Leslie Hore-Belisha said, ―Driving is an art in which those who are engaged should, in the interest of their own and of the public‘s safety; take the greatest pains to make themselves proficient.‖ If you are interested in further information regarding the courses that we offer, you‘ll be able to find this information on the Institute of Advanced Motorists website at www.iam.org.uk or Tel: 020 8996 9600 Safe Driving.
